Death of Mrs. D. D. Wilson, of Seaforth
We take the following from the Seaforth Expositor of last week: - We last week noticed the illness of Mrs. D. D. Wilson of this town. We then little anticipated that it would this week be our painful duty to chronicle her death. Such, however, is the case. On Saturday the sad intelligence was announced that she had passed away about eight o'clock that morning. Mrs. Wilson was the eldest daughter of Thos. Richardson, Esq., of North Dumfries, Waterloo county, and was a native Canadian. She was 49 years of age. Mr. Wilson has now been a resident and leading business man of this town for about twenty years, and hence the deceased was among the pioneer settlers, and here we may say, she had spent the best years of her life, and they were not spent in vain. Few, if any, enjoyed more fully and love and esteem of every person, and of all classes, by whom she was known. In her quiet, kind, unostentatious way she was always a leader in every charitable and Christian movement, and there are very many, especially among the poor of the town, who will sadly miss not only her cheerful smile and encouraging word, but more substantial aid which was always liberally bestowed where it was most needed and deserved. But while she will be missed, and sadly missed in this way, her loss will be most keenly felt in the church with which she has been connected almost since its formation, and in the home circle. In the former she was a leader and wise counsellor, while in the latter she was the beloved and living mother, and affectionate, thoughtful wife. In fact, in every relation of life, she acted the part of a true Christian woman, and she well merited the high esteem and affection in which she was cherished by all. The funeral took place on Monday afternoon, and was one of the largest ever seen in these parts. Indeed the attendance on this occasion abundantly manifested not only the esteem in which the deceased was held, but also the sincere sympathy felt for the bereaved husband and family on account of their irreparable loss.

Death of Mrs. John E. Webb - The death occurred in Galt on Wednesday afternoon of Mary Richardson, wife of John E. Welsh. Deceased was born in Waterloo Township and for many years resided with her husband just north of Roseville. Until her removal to Galt, some 10 years ago, she was a member of Knox church, Ayr, and her host of friends and acquaintances in this district will learn with regret of the passing of one whose many fine qualities won her the esteem and love of all. Mrs. Welsh's father was at one time magistrate of Waterloo Township and her grandmother on her father's side was the well-known Tibbie Shiel of St. Mary's loch, Scotland. Surviving are her husband, three sons and three daughters, viz.: William of Galt, James of Ayr, Edward of Expanse, Sask., Mrs. John Abra, Waterloo Township, Mrs., B. Hallman, Expanse, Sask., and Mrs. John McKellar, Galt. The funeral, which took place to the Ayr cemetery on Saturday afternoon, was largely attended.

Tibbie Shiels & St Mary's Loch
Tibbie Shiel's Inn is named after a widow, Tibbie Shiel who lived in what was then known as St Mary's Cottage in the late eighteenth and nineteen centuries. Tibbie was initially the servant of James Hogg's parent.
When she was widowed she had to support 6 children and she achieved this by providing board and lodgings in the cottage. Through her personality and determination the Inn became a frequently used stopping point for the literati and famous of that time.

_____________________
The historic Tibbie Shiels Inn takes its name from Isabella (Tibbie) Shiel, who, after the death of her mole-catcher husband in 1824, began to take lodgers at her small estate cottage to support her family of six. There were 13 beds in what is now the bar and in an attic. Tibbie's kitchen had two double box beds along with a grandfather clock, spinning wheel and a huge open grate with white-washed 'jaws'. Described as a small active woman with a great sense of humour, Tibbie played hostess to many famous men until her death in 1878, in her 96th year. Publisher Robert Chambers, recommended her inn in 'The Picture of Scotland' in 1827. The Ettrick Shepherd, James Hogg, was a regular visitor: she knew the writer all her life, having worked as a girl in his mother's household. Hogg's friend Sir Walter Scott was a regular and it's likely poet William Wordsworth also visited. Meetings with James Hogg at Tibbie's are said to have inspired Christopher North's famous 'Noctes Ambrosianae', in the best known of which he compares Tibbie's with a wren's nest. Legend has it that the morning after one of these nights of feasting, recitations and philosophising, accompanied likely by a few drams, Hogg was heard to call: "Tibbie, bring in the Loch!" Other names appearing in the visitors' books, still existing in the care of Tibbie's descendants, are Robert Louis Stevenson, historian Thomas Carlyle, the angler and poet Thomas Stoddart and future prime minister, William Gladstone.
