    Notes:

We do not know when or where he died. He is rumored to have fought in the Civil War and went to the States to collect a pension. Although he did cross the border in 1916, he indicated that he was in the States 1862-1864 living at "various places" without a mention of military service. I think I found him in the 1920 census for Waycross, Ware, Georgia; however, in this census he lists that his parents were born in Canada and not Scotland where they were born. The original family tree states that his last known residence was Wayside, Georgia. When he crossed, he listed his destination as Crystal Springs, Florida.

Dear Brother and Sister and Family:

I write you these few lines to let you know that we are all well at present hoping this will find you all well. I have no news to rite it has been very cold here we have had no thaw since the first of January. Bell says she is well and she hopes you are well and doing well and you must send her word how Andrew and Sammies(?) is but I guess she knows how Jenkins is. James Nichols will cut them all out if they don't mind. They had a great fire in Caledonia last Friday night the end of the bridge and all William Brown's block is burned up till Ropers. 14 houses burned some say 16 they say that it started from an ash pile someone put out with fire in them.

Clover seed is cheap this year $6,25 cts red is 470 cts and it turned out very thick(?) And there was so much white clover seed that it spoiled the sale of it. They say 100 and 80 dollar s for some old store over there beside Caddles school house. He won't give that for a house over their he thinks he had better rent a house first to see how they get along. Have not had one word from Andrew this while we heard he was to have his sale 5th of this month have not heard anything since. We expect a calf one of these nights or day. Butter is 16 cts only eggs 20, wheat 80, potatoes 25, apples 20 a bushel, dried apples a dollar per bushe l. Now I will stop tonight they are all in bed but me and Jane. I hear Sarah has got another son I ought to write t o them to but their turn will be next. There has been 5 letters wrote he e today and this is the only one I wrote I hope you won't take so long to answer this as I have done. Both had attained a good age, the wife being in her 76th year and Mr. Rutherford in his 84th. Theirs had been the simple, unostentatious life, and the attachment which existed between them was evidence of years of tender companionship. Mrs. Rutherford was Williamson, her birth place being Oneida Township. The husband was born at Cheviot Hills, Scotland, and came to Canada at the age of 8. He had been about 30 years on the farm on which he died. He was the last close of kin on his side of the house. Both were members of Knox United Church, Ayr, and in politics were Conservative. The family comprises four daughters and two sons, viz.: Mrs. A. Dryden, Galt; Mrs. G. Wallace, and Mrs. W. Little, North Dumfries; Elizabeth at home; Robert and James at home. Mrs. Rutherford leaves three brothers and three sisters. They are: James Williamson, Wayside, Georgia; David Williamson, Manitoulin Island; Andrew Williamson, North Dumfries; Mrs. And. Nichol, North Dumfries; Mrs. G. Hodgson, and Mrs. G. McDonald, Manitoulin Island. Interment was made in the Ayr cemetery on Jan 6 and Jan. 12 respectively. The pallbearers were: Messrs. Wesley Snyder, Thos. Sheard, John Hodgson, And. Nichol, Jas. King and W. Gemmell. The same gentlemen acted in both cases, with the exception that yesterday M. And. Williamson was substituted for Mr. Hodgson, and Mr. Alex. Edgar for Mr. Sheard. Rev. Mr. Brown conducted both services.

    Notes:

David Williamson with his wife Sarah Lynch, came to Manitou lin Island (Ontario, Canada) in 1880, from the Ayr district in North Dumfries Township of Southern Ontario. With them was their family of three boys, James,William and David - a babe in arms. David Sr. was a son of James Williamson and his wife Anne Calder who came to Canada from Scotland an d may have originally settled in Caledonia.

When David and Sarah embarked from Owen Sound, they landed at Manitowaning and were driven by cart to Van Zant's Landing. From there they went by boat across Lake Manitou, to Lehman's Landing - where Sid Cox presently lives. By then Sarah would have liked a cup of tea but none was forth coming. They then walked - probably the forest trail about 3 miles to John Caddel's house on Lake Mindemoya. Mrs. Caddel was David's sister. Sarah carried the baby, David, in her arms all the way.

It is known that they lived in a log cabin on what is now Jack Seabrook's farm and Andrew was born there in 1883, also probably Walter, Mary and Harry.

In 1892 they purchased from Frank and Elizabeth Wagg, the Colin Wagg farm and the Williamson family still owns this farm. Harold and Peter run the farm now.

This settlement was known then as Hopetown and was the site of the first fall fair in 1883 in Mindemoya. For many years the Department of Agriculture used part of the farm as an Experimental Station under the care of Peter and Walter Williamson. David was a councillor for Canarvan Township and Peter served as Councillor and then Reeve from 1949-1959 with another year as Councillor 1965-1966.

His son Harry was in from Alberta and the family had planned to attend a fair. To celebrate the occasion, David went into his cellar to get some of his homemade wine. He opened one of the bottles and sipped to see if it was ready for consumption. The bottle that he chose in that dark cellar was formaldehyde that resulted in his death.

I bought C Wagg farm I don't know if I will ever be able to pay for it or not if I do I will have the best farm in part I. Paid 2300 for it and he took mine for 800 and I move on a year from this spring you ought to let me put some rails on this f arm or you will never rent it to anyone else and I don' t think you will ever get more than $100 dollars for it again. Notes:

Struck by Car, William Williamson Dies of Injuries

The community was shocked on Saturday morning by the death of one of its well-known rural residents as the result of being struck by a car. William Williamson, 75, who has farmed for many years about two miles north of Ayr on the Ayr - Black Horse road, died in K-W Hospital at 12.30 p.m., about three hours after the accident. According to Ontario Provincial Police Constable Hibbard of Kitchener, Mr. Williamson was crossing toward the west side of the road, almost in front of his home, about 9.30 a.m., when he was struck by a car driven north by Charles M. Haines, 75, of Mount Pleasant. Constable Hibbard said Mr. Williamson was apparently going to check on some brush which he was burning across the road. Dr. John Holland of Ayr was summoned and the injured man was removed to hospital. His death was attributed to shock, multiple fractures and other injuries. An inquest will be held. It was the second death within a week from the same cause to sadden this community. The previous Tuesday, Herald Plumstead of Brantford, formerly of Ayr, died after being struck by a car on a Brantford street. Mr. Williamson was born at Greenfield, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Williamson. Early in life he learned the barbering trade in Galt and later worked in Saskatoon and Montreal for some 17 years. He returned to farm at the present location for the rest of his days. Mr. Williamson was a member of Ayr Masonic Lodge and an adherent of Knox United Church here. He is survived by his wife, the former Charlotte Kerr; a son, Russell of Kitchener; a daughter, Mrs. Donald Rabb (Ruth) of Tillsonburg; a brother, Albert of Sheffield, and a sister, Mrs. Casey Herriot of Galt. Five grandchildren also survive.
