    Blacksmith Until 75

Mr. Good Sr. was a blacksmith in St. Jacobs from the time he was 18 until he retired at 75. He died in 1957 at the age of 83. The business was a family affair started by Mrs. Woodall's great-grandfather Benjamin Good, who was succeeded by her grandfather, George Good. Mr. Sylvester Good then took over and his successor was his son, Mrs. Woodall's brother, Norman. Norman in turn sold the business to John B. Martin, the present proprietor.

    35¢ For New Shoe

The exact year the business was started is not on record, but it is thought to have been more than 100 years ago - before Canada was formed. Mrs. Woodall can recall working around the shop as a child during school holidays, and working the hand-operated bellows. The prices charged in those days, as shown in some of the old ledgers which Mrs. Woodall has retained, were 10 cents for re-setting a shoe and 25 to 35 cents for a new shoe. "As children, we couldn't always understand why father couldn't give us everything we wanted, when we wanted it," commented Mrs. Woodall on these prices. "When we grew older, we understood better." Mr. Sylvester Good was only away from St. Jacobs once in his 83 years and that was when he went on a harvest excursion. Mrs. Woodall has preserved a number of papers concerning this historic family, some of which she has placed in the custody of the museum at Doon.

This week my correspondence begins with the sad news that the angel of death entered the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Good and took away their little daughter, Norma Winnifred, on the 27th of last month. The burial took place on Wednesday of last week. Rev. A. R. Schulz, Elmira, officiated and preached a very impressive sermon to a large audience. Flash from the Past: Service station was at the hub of tiny Centreville

Much has changed in the Centreville area of Kitchener in recent decades.

When our mystery photo of July 3 was snapped - probably sometime about 1940 - the Shell service station that Walter Good operated at 2934 King St. E. was situated not in Kitchener but in Waterloo Township. The multi-lane Highway 8 we know today didn't exist. Nor did Fairway Road. And the Grand River Railway still carried passengers back and forth between Kitchener and Preston - passing just a hundred metres or so behind Good's garage.

That's Walter standing on the right in the photo. And the man on the left is his brother-in-law, Howard Heimpel.....

Well, today the site is a small retail plaza at the northwest corner of King Street East and Morgan Avenue. On the northeast corner is the Radisson Hotel Kitchener Waterloo. And across King Street is the Guest Inn Motel at King Street East and Kingsbury Drive....
