Joel Good, "the third son of John and Magdalena (Baumann) Good, was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, near Bowmansville, December 29th, 1815. When a few months past two years of age he came to this country with his parents. He received a fair education and devoted the early part of his life to the study of surveying and at present he is ranked with the first of our provincial land surveyors. On November 5th, 1839, he was married to Catherine, daughter of Abraham and Catherine (Biehn) Stauffer. She was born September 5th, 1820, and died May 20th, 1854. After their marriage they moved on the farm he still occupies. After the decease of his first wife he married Agnes, daughter of John and Jane (Calder) Hosea. She was born in Parish Ruthenglen, Lanark County, Scotland, July 23rd, 1834. In 1842 she came to America with her mother and grandparents. The second marriage took place December 18th, 1855. His family consists of fifteen children, six of whom were born unto his first wife and nine unto second wife"

    THE OLD SCHOOLHOUSE

An interesting meeting took place the Saturday before last in the old log cabin in Waterloo Park.

This house was, of course, the first schoolhouse in this area and stood originally on the school-house square at the corner of King and Church Streets in Waterloo. It was built in 1820 and served its purpose until 1842, when it was torn down and a 1-storey stone house was constructed on the site. The dismantled log house was erected again in Greenbush and served as a residence for a long time for the coloured man, Mr. Carroll and his family. In the course of this year, the Waterloo Park Commissioners purchased the house, moved it to their park and furnished it again as it was when it was a school-house.

At this gathering, in addition to many other ladies and gentlemen, the following (male and female) former pupils attended, took their places on the benches, and were called to order by the 82-year-old teacher, Benjamin Burkholder, who held the scepter, or rather, the switch, from 1831 to 1842 in the old log-house: Joel Guth, 80 years old; Abraham Scherk, Blair, 79; Jakob Bricker, Waterloo, 77; Sarah Burkholder, nee Erb, Bridgeport, 75; Amos Weber, Berlin, 73; John C, Bricker, Hawksville, 71; Maria Erb, nee Quickfall, Norwich 69; David B. Eby, Waterloo, 69; Wendel Baumann, Woolwich, 68; Henry Stauffer, Erbsville, 67; Simon Beatty, Elmira, 67; Jakob Ratz, New Hamburg, 67; Israel Baumann, Berlin, 65; George Elbert, Moorefield, 63; George H. Baumann, Elmira, 63; John Devitt, Waterloo, 62; Richard Quickfall, Bridgeport, 62; Isaak Hoffmann, Waterloo, 61; Robert Barkwell, Peel, 60; Diana McMahon, nee Dekay, Berlin, 60; Thomas Quickfall, Floradale, 60; Benjamin Devitt, Waterloo, 60; Isaak Devitt, Floradale, 58; John Longmann, Peel, 57. In addition, to these, the teacher read the names of 25 pupils from the roll; they were, however, absent.

Mr. Burkholder gave an interesting talk about the history of the old school-house, and after him, Rev. J.A. MacLachlan, Rev. J. McNair, Mr. J.E. Baumann, M.P., and Mr. Jakob Ratz spoke about the old days which brought many things out of the past to mind again. School was, as a rule, only in session in winter and the costs were borne by the parents of the children. There were few subjects taught, namely: Reading, Writing and Sums. The children heard little about language, and geography; no child had more than 2 or 3 books. The predominant language was German. The pupils learned to read and write English, but didn't understand a word of it. Among the teachers in the old school-house from 1820-1842, with the exception of Mr. Burkholder, were the following whose names are still recognized: Jephtha DeKay, Joseph Guth, John Herringer, Peter Otto, John Dobbin, Elias Eby, Robert Barber, & Joseph Eby.

After those present, on hearing the various speeches felt themselves transported back to the past, the school was closed at four o'clock and the pupils were gathered together in front of the school and photographed as a group. On their return into the school, they found it had been transformed into a dining room with heavily-laden tables, which the old-timers thoroughly enjoyed. After everyone had chatted cordially for a while longer, the gathering broke up. The company will not meet again in complete numbers, nor in such a way.

    Notes:

Tony Matlock of Kitchener phoned to say he helped to launch Washerama in downtown Kitchener in 1958 with partners Ralph Meyer and Howard Davis. It sold washing machines and home appliances. The name, he said, was a spin on the General Motors "Motorama" held at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto.

One of the firm's early challenges, Matlock said, was that it didn't have the rights to sell Electrohome products. It found a solution in the early 1960s by buying Good Appliances (owner Newton Good) at 74 King St. S., Waterloo, which did hold an Electrohome franchise.

    WEBER, Gladys E. June 10, 1915 - July 17, 2010

Gladys Weber (née Perschbacher) passed away peacefully on July 17, 2010 after a brief stay in the Vernon Jubilee Hospital, Vernon, B.C. She was 95 years old. Gladys was predeceased by Norman Weber, her dear husband of 47 years, who died in 1990; and by her sisters: Evelyn Sturm, Ruth Caldwell, Ethel Case and Lillian Hallman. She will be sadly missed by her two daughters, Joan Burton of Newmarket, Ontario, and Kathryn and her husband Robert Hettler of Armstrong, BC. She leaves six grandchildren: Scott and Jamie (Heidi) Burton; and Jeremy, Paul (Ruth), Karina, and Steven (Loralie) Hettler; as well as five great-grandchildren: Kyra, Emmitt, Halia, Dalia and Micah.

Gladys was born and spent her early years in Waterloo, Ontario. As a young woman, she left school after Grade 11 to contribute financially to her widowed mother and four sisters by working as Secretary to the Medical Director at Dominion Life in Waterloo. She was also the church organist at Emmanuel Evangelical Church in Waterloo for 5 years. After marrying Norman Weber in 1943, she devoted herself to being a full-time wife and mother. In 1950, she and Norman moved to Calgary, Alberta, where they spent the rest of their lives together until his death. She was involved in the United Church as secretary, choir member and more, and was recognized for her leadership there in 1966. During those years she was also a backup organist for two churches, and an active participant in the Rotary Anns of Calgary, PEO, and two bridge clubs. She loved travelling; in addition to frequent trips to Ontario to see relatives, she and Norman travelled to Hawaii, Europe and China. In 1999, she moved to Vernon, B.C. to be closer to her daughter, Kathryn, and joined Trinity United Church there. Throughout her life, Gladys was consistently generous with her time, her energy, her financial resources, and her love. Her family always knew they were loved without question. She lived a good life, and she will be missed. A memorial service to celebrate Gladys' life will be held at Trinity United Church Chapel in Vernon at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, August 4, 2010. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Trinity United Church, PO Box 93, Vernon, B.C. V1T 6M1 and designate it for Camp Hurlburt, either Child Sponsorship or Rebuilding Campaign.

    Pioneering spirit

    Alene Jewitt

Born: Dec. 17, 1919 in Waterloo
    Died: Aug.17, 2009 of stroke

October 09, 2009 By Valerie Hill Record Staff

Alene Jewitt was born of a pioneering Mennonite spirit so when she packed up the last suitcase at her family homestead in 1986, the sturdy little grey haired woman was saying goodbye to 180 years of Erb family history.

"The farm was owned by her great grandfather since 1832," said son, Don Jewitt. "Her grandfather built the house."

The Waterloo farm was one of the last of the original working farms in the German Company Tract, an area now filled with subdivisions though the original farmhouse received a last minute reprieve from the wrecking ball. Alene must have been delighted the old place would not be lost, a place that had been home to generations of Erbs.

An only child, Alene's father died when she was only four years old forcing her mother to take charge of the prosperous 167 acre farm and as she matured, Alene would assist.

Don explained "they were really unique, they weren't typical Mennonite women. They were very strong willed."
The women contracted local hired men to do the heavy work and it wasn't until the war years that a more permanent solution arrived on the scene.

Don said his mother often reminisced about the day she peaked out the window and spotted Howard Jewitt strolling toward the barn. There was something about the young man that caught her eye and her heart and she knew immediately, he would never leave the farm.

Howard had been assigned to the farm as a conscientious objector, one of many young men who refused war duty because of their faith and were instead put to work often on farms.

The couple married Aug. 30, 1947, raising four kids on the farm even as urbanization crept closer every year. Howard ran the farm while Alene engaged in countless volunteer activities, including historical research and membership in the Waterloo Historical Society.
Armed with little more than a Grade 8 education - her grandmother's decision based on Mennonite tradition - Alene was always an avid learner and exhibited a real gift for writing. Over the years she crafted stories, created puppet shows, penned long letters and even wrote a play for the Pennsylvania German Historical Society.

"She read a tremendous amount, she loved to read," said Don. As a child, Alene would squirrel away in her closet with a good book, hiding her light long after bedtime. "Her education became what she'd read," Don explained.

Don and his sister Mary Weber, describe their mother as immensely talented, a woman who could do anything, from making puppets to sewing her own clothes and she taught home economics courses at the Women's Institute.
"She did everything well," said Mary.

Though she was not above criticizing a minister's sermon, Alene's church was important to her. "She had a very prominent voice in the church," said Don, noting his mother was the person everyone turned to for leadership. If she saw a problem, Alene would roll up her sleeves and fix it, even if it meant yet one more volunteer job.

As a mother she was practical, always busy, kept a clean house and food on the table and according to Don "she was not your typical homemaker."
Mary said "She didn't show her feelings, there was not a lot of hugging." Don added "she cared about what we did and was always involved." Alene also had an open door policy for neighourhood kids and was a patient, albeit critical listener.

"If you had an opinion opposite of Mom's you had to have it well researched," said Don. If she couldn't support her side of the argument, Alene would ponder it a few days then offer a rebuttal.

In 1967, during Canada's centennial year Alene put all her well honed debating skills to good use. In that year heritage farms across the country were being honoured with a centennial plaque but only if the farm was in the same family name. Alene was furious, challenging what she saw was a sexist attitude. She fought back and won, celebrating by hosting a farm fair at the old homestead. Less than 20 years later, life changed again.

New subdivisions were gobbling up neighouring lands and it was finally time to sell, leaving behind a lifetime of memories.
In a 1985 Record article, Alene explained how her sense of family and history sprang from the hours spent curled beside her bedridden grandmother listening to stories of the early days, when Aboriginal families lived in the nearby bush and the Grand Truck Railway first steamed through the county.

If she was sad to leave this homestead, Alene kept those emotions to herself. She told the reporter she was "a country woman at heart" not comfortable with the city life springing up around her. "I'm ready to go," she said.

Alene and Howard purchased a country property near Arthur. Howard died in 2001 and Alene lived on her own until February, when failing health forced her to move into a nursing home where she died, ending a unique era in Waterloo history.
