    INDUSTRIALIST PASSES AWAY
    J. M. Schneider Saw Future of Kitchener; Led a Busy Life

John Metz Schneider, founder of J. M. Schneider Limited, one of Kitchener's pioneer industrialist, died at his home, 379 Queen Street South, early last night. Mr. Schneider had been in failing health for more than a year.

He celebrated his 83rd birthday anniversary last Tuesday and was the recipient of congratulations and felicitations from his scores of friends in the city and throughout Ontario. He was able to be downstairs for the celebration.

    BORN ON COLLEGE STREET

The life of J. M. Schneider goes back to the pioneer days of Kitchener industry. He was born on College Street, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Schneider, on February 17, 1859. The packing business he founded and headed for many years was started over 50 years ago and developed by him to its present outstanding place in the meat packing world.

He was one of the town builders who half a century ago saw a future ahead of the community and through membership with the Board of Trade and other community enterprises contributed to the growth and development of the city.

He worked In the button factory as a young man being an employee of the Jacob Y. Shantz Company. It was while he was recovering from a cut on the hand and was unable to return to his work that the late John R. Eden suggested to him that he start making sausages. Mr. Schneider acted on the suggestion. He bought a hog at the market and started making Schneider's sausages and selling them from house to house. That was the start of the big industry that is now known in many parts of the world.

    INTERESTED IN WORKERS

In all his business relations, and particularly with his employees, he was not only a kindly man but one who took a deep interest in the affairs of the worker. He knew the men in his factory as "my boys," and very recently he made his daily trip through the plant chatting with the men and taking particular pleasure from his talks with those who were associated with him in the early days when J. M. Schneider, Limited was but a small concern.

His employees' problems were his problems and he went outside of plant many times to be of assistance to those who needed help. In the depression days, when jobless men trekked through the city daily looking for work, they found a meal ticket at Mr. Schneider's home. In addition there were many families tided over the depression by his kindliness. His benefactions were accomplished quietly so that only those who received them knew.

He started In the sausage business about 52 years ago, the plant being in his own house where he prepared the meat for delivery to his customers. Gradually the name of Schneider's sausage became well known in the town and the demand forced him to expand and he had watched the continued expansion of the business up to the time of his death.

    CIVIC CAREER

For 44 years he continued an active membership in the Board of Trade and also an active interest in municipal affairs. He was an alderman in 1905, 1906 and 1907.

In church affairs he was the senior member of the Church of the Good Shepherd. He was married November 8, 1884 to Helena Ahrens by Reverend F. W. Tuerk, pastor of the New Jerusalem Church of that day. He was keenly interested in church work and in his active years promoted many of the progressive steps taken by the congregation. The erection of the new church on Queen Street North was a source of great satisfaction to him.

Deceased is survived by his wife and three sons, Charles A., Norman C. and Fred H., all associated with him in the business. A daughter, Mrs. Walter V. Siegner, two brothers, Henry M., and William, and a sister, Mrs. George Alles, all of Kitchener, also survive him. Nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive. One son, Herbert J. predeceased him.

A private funeral service will be held from the residence, 379 Queen Street South, on Thursday at 2 p.m., followed, by public funeral service at the Church of the Good Shepherd at 2: 45 pm. Entombment will be in Woodland Mausoleum. Rev. Val Tilton will officiate. Remains are at the Schreiter-Sandrock Funeral Home until Thursday morning, where friends are asked to pay respects

    A Loss to Kitchener

The death of J. M. Schneider causes sincere regret in this community where he has left a mark that will never be effaced. We can truthfully say that Kitchener is a better, more prosperous city for his manifold contributions as industrialist, civic servant, benefactor and exemplar citizen.

A native of Kitchener, where he spent a long and fruitful life, the late Mr. Schneider typified the pioneer industrialist who began business in a small way and saw his enterprise flourish until it reached considerable proportions. As founder of J. M. Schneider Limited, it is interesting to recall that this local packing plant had a humble origin at his home half a century ago. It is a far cry from the sausage grinder turned by hand to the modernly equipped plant serving both domestic and export trade. The Twin City can boast of many industrial enterprises which started similarly and expanded to sizable manufacturing units.

It can be said of Mr. Schneider that he was a considerate employer, always concerned about the welfare of those who worked for him. He mingled freely with his employees and in that way he got to know them personally and to understand their individual problems. He counted that day lost when he made or deepened no friendship.

A sterling citizen in every way, Mr. Schneider's passing is a distinct loss to Kitchener, which he benefited by many of his interests.

Schneider had major impact on businesses, recreation. By Susan Hoffman for the Record

Born in Berlin (Kitchener) in 1888, Norman Schneider was a son of J. M. Schneider, founder of the meat-packing company bearing his name.

He joined the business in 1911, serving as vice-president, president and chair man of the board and a director. He retired as chairman in 1970.

Schneider had many interests beyond work. One of his numerous community initiatives was the formation of the Waterloo-Wellington Airport.

He was involved in the establishment of the old Kitchener-Waterloo Airport on Lexington Road in Waterloo in 1930, and was later instrumental in the selection of the site of the present airport in Breslau.

Schneider was a member of the Airport Commission from 1946 until 1971. In 1973, a building was named the Norman C. Schneider Airport Terminal in recognition of his 50 years of service to aviation.

In 1936, Schneider covered the Olympics in Berlin, Germany, for the Kitchener Daily Record, and in 1939, he was the official movie photographer when King George VI and Queen Elizabeth visited Kitchener. Through the generosity of Schneider's family this film is available on video tape from the Victoria Park Historical Committee in Kitchener.

Schneider was elected Liberal member of Parliament for Waterloo North in 1952 in a by-election called after L. O. Breithaupt was appointed lieutenant-governor.

He was re-elected in 1953 and again in 1957, when the Liberals lost power after 22 years and Schneider was the only Liberal left between Toronto and Windsor. He lost his seat in a 1958 election when the Conservatives under John Diefenbaker took over.

Schneider turned his avid love of skiing into a community project, encouraging the purchase of the Chicopee ski slopes by the Grand River Conservation Authority and the cities of Kitchener and Waterloo to preserve them for public use. In 1972, he was given a life membership in the ski club after 36 years of service on their behalf.

Schneider was also a member of the Kitchener-Waterloo High School Board for nine years, an original director of the Kitchener-Waterloo Federated Appeal, a president of the Kitchener Young Men's Club and a director at Economical Mutual Insurance Co. for 15 years. Another great interest was Doon Pioneer Village, now Doon Heritage Cross Roads. He served on the board for many years and helped build its collection, donating a LeRoy car, an automobile made in (Berlin) Kitchener by the Good Brothers.

Schneider died in 1985, at the age of 96. He was inducted into the Waterloo County Hall of Fame.

Ex-MP, business leader, Norman Schneider dies

Norman C. Schneider, retired chairman of the board of J.M. Schneider Inc. and a former member of Parliament for Waterloo North died early today at his home. He was 96. A son of J.M. Schneider, founder of the third largest meat packing company in Canada, Norman Schneider was born in Berlin, now Kitchener, Dec. 9, 1888.

After graduating from high school, he served an apprenticeship as a machinist from 1905-1911 with the Tuerk Engine and Tool Co.
As youngsters, he and his brother, Fred, helped their father and took sausages in a horse and wagon to the Kitchener Farmers' Market. Norman joined the business in 1911 and rose through the company ranks, serving as vice-president, president, chairman of the board and a director. He retired as chairman in 1970. In the political field, Schneider won a 1952 byelection for the Liberals. The byelection was necessitated by the appointment of the late L.O.Breithaupt as lieutenant-governor of Ontario. He was re-elected in 1953 and in 1957. But in 1958, he was defeated by the late O.W. (Mike) Weichel, a Conservative.

Among his many community endeavors was the Waterloo-Wellington Airport. He was involved in establishing the old Kitchener-Waterloo Airport on Waterloo's Lexington Road in 1930 and was instrumental in selecting the site at Breslau for the existing airport.
Schneider was a member of the airport commission from its founding in 1946 until 1971. In 1973, a $103,000 terminal building was named the Norman C. Schneider Airport Terminal in recognition of his 50 years of service to aviation.
Although he flew in everything from old Jennies to Tiger Moths and often took over the controls of other airplanes, he didn't become a pilot because his parents felt it was "irresponsible" of a married man with three children.
He enlisted in the army in the First World War, took his 1915 Model-T Ford with him to Ottawa and was commissioned a lieutenant because of his experience in the local militia. But he never went overseas because he had had rheumatic fever as a youngster and had a heart murmur.

In 1936, he covered the Olympics in Berlin for The Record and sent back stories about "heiling hordes" cheering Adolf Hitler. And in 1939, he was the official movie photographer for Kitchener when the King and Queen visited the city.
An avid skier, he was given a life membership in the Chicopee Ski Club in 1972 after 38 years service. He started skiing in his 40's and continued for more than 40 years, finally giving it up at 88 because his legs "couldn't take it anymore." But he continued to walk at mile a day providing the weather was good.

Schneider was a member of the Kitchener-Waterloo high school board for 9 years, an original director of the K-W Federated Appeal and a member of Grand River Lodge AF and AM. He also served on the boards of the University of Waterloo, the Children's Aid Society and St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener.

He was a member of the citizen's advisory committee of St. Jerome's college, a member of the Waterloo-Wellington Flying Club, a past president of the Kitchener Young Men's Club and a director for 15 years of the Economical Mutual Insurance Co.
One of his greatest interests was the Doon Pioneer Village. He served on its governing board for many years and helped to establish many of the exhibits including a LeRoy car, the first production automobile built in Canada. Long after he retired form active business, Schneider enjoyed motorcyling throughout the Kitchener-Waterloo area, giving it up at the age of 85.

In March 1977, he was given an honorary life membership to the Salvation Army advisory board in Kitchner because he had served on the 12-member body for a number of years. Surviving are his wife, two sons, one daughter and one sister. A public memorial service will be held on Thursday, Sept. 5, at 4 p.m. at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Queen Street North and Margaret Avenue in Kitchener, followed by a reception at the Centre in the Square.

55 YEARS IN TRADE, PACKING EXECUTIVE F. H. SCHNEIDER DIES

Frederick H. Schneider, Chairman of the Board of J. M. Schneider Ltd. and a company official for 55 years, died Thursday at his home at 3453 King St. E. He was 77.

He was born Aug. 1, 1890, in Kitchener, a son of the late J. M. Schneider, the founder of the meat-packing company which has become internationally known. He entered his father's business in 1906 when he was 16. In 1907 he was appointed accountant for the company, in 1911, secretary- treasurer, in 1937, general manager, in 1943 president and in 1963, chairman of the board.

For many years he drew a $12 weekly salary. He was a firm believer that an executive cannot earn his salary sitting at a desk, and he spent considerable time in the plant, discussing problems with foremen and workers. Until 1955 he served as a clerk and meat cutter in the retail store and was also a livestock buyer.

He and his brother, Norman, were mainly responsible for the decision to abandon the plant their father had begun on upper Courtland Avenue (now Silverwoods Ltd.) and to construct an almost new and complete plant on Courtland Avenue East where the firm is now located. For the first time, the company borrowed $200,000 from a bank.

The company was formed with $300 capital as a part-time business by J. M. Schneider who firmly refused to borrow a dollar. On Oct. 26, 1956, Mr. Schneider became the first man to be honored by the Meat Packers Council of Canada at a special 50th anniversary in the business party at the Kress Hotel, Preston.

In addition to his business connections with the J. M. Schneider company, he was president of Stirling Realty Ltd. and a former director of the MacDonald Electric Co. Ltd., and the Equitable Life Insurance Co. of Canada. He served as a Kitchener alderman for three years and as a member and past chairman of the public school board for four years. He was a governor of Hamilton College. He was an active member of the Canada Association of the new Church (Swedenborgian) and was a former member of the local church board. He was past president of the Meat Packers Council of Canada. He was a member of the K-W Rotary Club, of Westmount Golf and Country Club, the K-W Granite Club and the Grand River Lodge A.F. and A.M. He was interested in golfing and fishing.

Mrs. Schneider, the former Ella Daniels, predeceased him. Surviving are one son, Frederick P. Jr.; one daughter, Mrs. R. C. (Jean) Hawkings of Deep River, Ont.; one brother, Norman C. of RR 1, Kitchener; one sister, Mrs. W. V. (Emma) Siegner of Kitchener and eight grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers, Charles and Herbert.

The body will be at the Sandrock Funeral Home from Saturday noon until 1 p.m. Monday when removal will be made to the Church of the Good Shepherd. The church service will be conducted by Rev. Paul Zacharias at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Woodland cemetery. Donations to the Rotary Crippled Children Centre will be accepted as expressions of sympathy.
