On Monday, the wife of August Stoltz, of Mannheim, died here at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Adam Becker. She suffered from a nasty ulcer and had been living in Berlin for several months. She leaves eight grown children: Alfred and Mrs. Adam Becker in Berlin; Alexander and Edward in Mannheim, Reverend August F., a missionary in Africa; Mrs. Conrad Hahn in Linwood; Mrs. C. Winhold in Tavistock; and Mrs. W. Lautenschläger in Petersburg. In addition, two brothers still live, respectively, in Parkhill and Blenheim. Burial takes place today, Thursday, in Mannheim. The "Journal" expresses its sympathy to her husband and other remaining survivors.

    __________

    FRIED & SON.

A short walk west of the village brought me to the fine two-hundred- acre stock farm of the above well known firm. I was induced to visit this place by the flattering reports of the large herd of splendid thoroughbred and grade Durham cattle kept and bred there and the numerous prizes awarded them in the face of competition with some of the leading thorough bred stock breeders in this country and the United States. Mr. Fried lives on the old homestead, where he was born, and has lived ever since. His son, Allen, lives on the adjoining farm formerly owned by the late Joseph Evans, once an old and familiar character in this neighborhood. The late Samuel Fried, father of the subject of this sketch, was born in Bucks County, Pa, Aug. 5, 1804. In March, 1825, he, in company with others, walked to Canada, the trip requiring thirteen days. He settled on a farm near Blair, which is now a part of the old Wilkes' estate. He removed, however, in a few years, to Blenheim township, Oxford county, and settled on the farm now occupied by the son, and where he died, Nov. 3, 1876. The old barn is still in a good state of preservation. I am informed from reliable authority that it is the oldest bank barn in Blenheim township. It was erected during the dark days of the rebellion in 1837 and a thrilling incident is connected with its construction. One of the workmen put up a small American flag upon the comb of the frame. It was an act that meant trouble for the perpetrator, but it suddenly and mysteriously disappeared when several British officers came in search of the objectionable emblem.

Messrs. Fried & Son have been in the cattle breeding business for quite a number of years, and there are none in Ontario who have been more successful. For an admirer of splendid specimens of the bovine family, it is a delightful and instructive pastime to visit their stables. While they have a large number, and not an inferior one in the lot, I will merely allow space to mention several of their specialties and prize winners:

Blenheim Cherry (21,756) calved Jan. 5th, 1892, on the Fried farm, is a mountain of hide and tallow, weighing nearly 2,100 pounds. She was the winner of the prize at the Provincial Fat Stock Show at Brantford, and 1st prize at the Oxford F. S. S., Ingersoll, 1897.

Oxford Rose (2,826), a most superb animal. She was easily awarded 1st prize at the Guelph Fat Stock Show as a two-year-old heifer, and Jubilee Sweepstakes, 1897. She tips the beam at 1,800 pounds.

Roan Lilly, a remarkably handsome creature was the winner of first prize at the Provincial Fat Stock Show, Brantford, 1897, and 1st prize at the Oxford Fat Stock Show, Ingersoll, 1897.

Snow Flake, pure white, and as perfect in shape and form as an animal could be, is going on two years. She weighs 1,500 pounds, and carried off 1st prize at the Provincial F. S. S, Brantford, 1897, and 1st prize at the Oxford Fat Stock Show, Ingersoll, 1897. She has thirteen 1st prizes to her credit. Carry, also a perfect beauty, won 2nd prize as a calf at the Guelph F.S.S, 1897.

Look Me Over won 1st prize as a two year-old grade steer at the Provincial Fat Stock Show, Brantford, 1897, and as a best steer, any age, and first Special Challenge Cup at Ingersoll, 1897. This animal weighed 1,900, and at Brantford the Champion Fat Steer of the United States was beaten by him.

That Mr. Fried is thoroughly experienced in feeding for the market, there is ample proof in the rapid increase in flesh made by "Look-Me-Over." His weight on Jan. 1st was 1,030 pounds, and by the following December he had gained 870 pounds.

Honest Billy, a prize winner from the ground up, won first premium at the Provincial Fat Stock Show, as a calf under one year old, and first prize at Oxford, I.S.S., Ingersoll, 1897, as a year-old. Weight, 1,200 pounds.

Were I to take the space to describe properly each animal, in the large herd of grades and thoroughbreds now being fed and cared for at the three barns of Messrs. Fried & Son, it would monopolize the entire edition of The CHRONICLE On the lower farm occupied by the son Allen, is a herd well worth the time to go and see. One thing in particular that attracted my attention on this occasion was the stable of splendid large horses in the finest condition. Nine cases out of ten where the breeding of thorough bred cattle is the leading feature, you will find the neglected horse stable sadly neglected.

    My Dear Editor:

I am enclosing postal order for subscription to Canadian Nurse. Through pressure of work. I have delayed doing so; consequently, am asking for the October number, as my renewal was not in time to receive it. Our Canadian Nurse is doing excellent work. I am hoping they will start a vigorous campaign for the opening up of post-graduate courses in our Canadian city hospitals, and thus save thousands of nurses to Canada. I think if the C.N.A. made that an objective it could be accomplished, and would be of incalculable benefit to the Canadian nursing profession.

    Very truly yours,
    Elsie Master.

Nurse Elsie Master wrote a letter published June 7 1916 in the Berlin News Record.

"In taking the name of Kitchener, great honour would be done to our city in memory of the splendid man whom all the world delights to honour," she wrote.

"The name of Kitchener would be a heritage to the citizens of Berlin in the generations to come, and will always be typical of splendid patriotism, tremendous energy, great attainments, and a sense of unswerving honour and rectitude.

"The name would be one no citizen need blush for, and one our country and Empire would recognize as standing out in bold contrast to all that is implied in our present name of Berlin."

    Death of Prominent Farmer

Mr. Allan Fried Succumbs to Typhoid Fever

We are sorry to report the death of one of our most prominent farmers, Mr. Allan Fried, who died on Wednesday night, after a short illness, in his 57th year. The late Mr. Fried had not been in the best of health lately but still able to be up and around until last Friday night when he took very ill, and when the doctor was summoned he pronounced it typhoid fever. He became delirious the same night and remained so intermittently until death came to his relief. He was married to Rachael Gehman about 31 years ago. To them were born eight children, all of whom survive: Ephriam, Mrs. Wilfred Wanner, Mrs. Melville Veitch, Ralph, Russel, Clayton, Cleo, and Ethel, at home; besides these he leaves to mourn their loss his aged parents, three sisters and one brother. He was a member of the Evangelical Church here and has been a prominent man in this community. He has been a successful exhibitor of cattle and horses at fall fairs for many years. The funeral was held at his late residence on Sunday afternoon, thence to the Evangelical Church for service, thence to the cemetery, and was largely attended. The four sons and two sons-in-law acted as pallbearers. In his death the family loses a kind husband and loving father. The community extends its sincere sympathy to the bereaved widow and family.

    Well-Known Farmer Meets Death

Lawrence Fried Pinned Under Tractor and is Drowned

Lawrence Fried was found dead beneath an overturned tractor in the ditch on the Blenheim-Wilmot townline about 2 miles south of New Dundee at two o'clock on Monday afternoon. Just how the accident occurred is not known. The accident occurred at a culvert in the road and it is believed in coming down hill he did not notice how close he was to the edge and the tractor overturned into the ditch pinning him underneath in about three feet of water. The doctors who examined the dead man said that he was uninjured but was in such a position that it was impossible for him to extricate himself, death being due to drowning.

Mr. Fried who lived about 1 ½ miles southeast of New Dundee, left his home about ten o'clock in the forenoon with his tractor to plough at another farm. Later passersby noticed the machine in the ditch by the roadside, but it was not until early in the afternoon, Mr. Fried not appearing, that is was thought he might be underneath and upon investigation the body was found submerged in three feet of water. No inquest was deemed necessary by Coroner Dr. Honsberger, of Kitchener, as it was evident the death was accidental.

The late Mr. Fried was a prominent farmer and a well-known horse and cattle breeder, showing at Toronto and London as well as at the fairs in this district. He was well known in New Hamburg. He was about 47 years of age and is survived by his widow and eight children, besides his father, John, Fried, now of Kitchener.

Selling the store in 1911, Ezra, Lucinda and several of the children moved to 20 Alma St. in Berlin (Charles Street East in 2018, site of the Crowne Plaza parking garage). Less than a block away, Ezra and second son Franklin opened E.H. Thamer & Son men's furnishings shop at 96 King East at Scott (2018's Waterloo Region Record office site). Third son Owen had been born in 1896, and when the opening salvoes of the First World War were fired, he was 18 and a half. The Thamer brothers, like most Canadian men in their teens/early 20s, inexorably became part of the First World War.

Franklin joined the 34th Overseas Battalion in Guelph and was in France by October 1915, among the earliest Berlin men to reach the battlefield. A letter Franklin sent from hospital in April 1917 said he was suffering from "shell-shock and concussion of the ears." However, Sapper F.F. Thamer returned to active service, escaped further serious injury and was part of the Canadian Army of Occupation in Germany following the November 1918 Armistice. He sent several souvenirs back home and Ezra proudly displayed helmets, badges and photos in the family's store window. Franklin returned to Kitchener in mid June 1919. For a couple of years, he remained with his father's business but then left town.

Today's subject began his life in New Dundee. That's where Owen Thamer's parents, Rev. Ezra H. and Lucinda (Fried) Thamer put down roots, raising three daughters and four sons above the family's general store. Originally owned by James Wing, the shop at 190 Main St. was purchased by Ezra outright in 1904 and he then installed New Dundee's first Bell Telephone exchange. As a sideline, Ezra operated a small creamery in the cellar. Proving an unsuccessful butter maker, he sold the idle equipment and donated the basement space for a year to a group of shareholders calling itself the New Dundee Co-Operative Creamery Limited. That was the 1908 foundation of what became New Dundee's largest industry. Soon, a large factory was erected, and by the 1930s, it was Ontario's largest butter producer. In 1998, the creamery closed, ending nine decades of employment for generations of New Dundee-ites.

    But, back to the Thamers.

The Thamer brothers, like most Canadian men in their teens/early 20s, inexorably became part of the First World War....

Owen, the younger brother, didn't enlist immediately but had flying in his blood and signed with the Royal Flying Corps. Following aviation courses at the University of Toronto, he was assigned to Aviation School at Camp Borden. Early on May 10, 1917, a curious incident in Kitchener attracted hundreds of spectators as well as front-page coverage in both local daily newspapers.

Flight Cadet Owen Thamer took off alone in his JN-4 Canuck two-seat training aircraft, ostensibly heading for Owen Sound. Claiming to have become lost in the clouds, he travelled via Georgetown, Hamilton, Brantford, Galt and, surprise, 115 miles later, ended up in his hometown of Kitchener. At 7: 15 a.m., early-rising people in the east ward were surprised to hear a low-flying airplane circle and land on Alderman Sam Brubacher's farm field, near today's Weber/Pandora intersection.

Coincidentally (or not), in the previous day's Kitchener Daily Telegraph, Ezra said a landing place had been picked out should his son fly in for a visit!

A phone call to Camp Borden resulted in an order for Owen to stay grounded until his instructor, Flight-Lieutenant Watson (or was it Wilson? each newspaper had a different name) could fly to Kitchener and escort him back. Alas, Wilson/Watson's plane cracked up on landing but, luckily, neither he nor his accompanying mechanic was injured. Since Thamer's airplane was not damaged, Watson/Wilson flew it back next morning to Camp Borden. Thamer caught a train back to base after a day in his hometown....

    Residence:
This one and a half storey house originally had cedar roof shingles, although they are now green shingles, and it has brown clapboard siding. There is a small porch facing the road, and the windows are 2 over 2 with a yellow and green trim. It was the retirement home of William Perrin and his wife.

In the early 1900's it was believed this house was haunted. People in the village would often tell stories of how former owners heard strange noises in the house, such as heavy chains dragging. One woman believed that a ghost would go into her children's rooms and remove their blankets at night. According to the villagers', the house became haunted after an elderly woman died in the house. It was reported that she had lost her mind. Two other prominent owners of this house were William Perrin, who was the former road commissioner for the village; and Gordon Fried, who was an active member of the Roseville community.

Gordon married Violet Marceline Goettling 3 Dec 1924, Roseville, North Dumfries Twp., Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada. GOODING, Isabell Passed away peacefully with family by her side, in her 95th year, on Palm Sunday, April 13, 2014 at Trinity Village Nursing Home. Born in Plattsville, Ontario on December 6, 1919, Isabell was the last surviving child of Albert and Melissa (nee Fried) Gooding. Predeceased by her parents and siblings Leonard (Winnie) Gooding, Mabel (Gord) Bullock, Pearl (Layton) Shantz, Fannie (Ken) Habel, infant Eleanor, Irene Gooding, and Sherwood (Lavonna) Gooding. Dear Mother of Joanne (Daniel) Kraemer. Loving Grandmother of Dustin, Laura and Jacqueline Kraemer. All her relatives and friends will sadly miss her but we take solace that the burdens of this life have come to an end. Her journey had been long and at times arduous, but her love and devotion will always be remembered and cherished. Isabell started working as a maid for the Schneider, Kabel and the A.R. Kaufman families. When she worked for the Kaufman family, her bedroom was on the 3rd floor of what is now the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home. At the age of 42, she returned to school to obtain her high school equivalency and became a bookkeeper for numerous local small businesses. Mom was never afraid to work and daily delivered 200 K-W Records till she was 75. Our gratitude goes to all the staff at Trinity Village who wonderfully cared for Mom for seven years. All functions will be held at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, 621 King St. W. Visitation is from 2-4 and 7-9 on Wednesday, April 16.
