MRS. MATILDA WINTERMEYER

Mrs. Matilda Wintermeyer, 77, of 10 College street, died at her home Saturday afternom after a month's illness. Born in Kitchener she lived here all her life. She attended St. Mary's church and was a member of the Catholic Women's League and the Christian Mothers' Society. Her husband, John Wintermeyer, predeceased her eight years ago. Surviving are one son, A. C. Wintermeyer, one daughter Mrs. H. J. Shoniker, both of Kitchener, two sisters, Mrs. Jacob Ball, Waterloo and Mrs. Joseph Bauman, Walkerton. Funeral services will be held tomorrow morning from the residence, to St Mary's church for solemn requiem high mass at 10 o'clock. Interment will be in Mount Hope R. C. cemetery. Remains are resting at the residence until the funeral.

HONOURABLE JOHN J. WINTERMEYER 1916-1993

John Wintermeyer's long career in public life was one that could truly be called "a devoted service to a calling."

Wintermeyer was born in Berlin (Kitchener) and attended St. Jerome's High School. He graduated in commerce and philosophy from the University of Notre Dame before attending Harvard Law School. In 1943, he graduated from Dalhousie Law School and he was admitted to the bar in Nova Scotia and Ontario.

Wintermeyer was elected as a City of Kitchener alderman in 1952, and in 1955 he was elected Member of Provincial Parliament for Waterloo North. In 1958, Wintermeyer became leader of the Ontario Liberal Party, a position he held until 1963. As leader of the official opposition in the Legislature, Wintermeyer stressed the need for hospital and medical insurance, education reform, improvements in public services, equality of opportunity and constitutional changes.

Wintermeyer was known as man of deep faith, charity and integrity. He held a Papal Honour - Member of the Order of St. Sylvestre, Sir Knight of Malta; and he held a Civilian Honour - Member of the Military Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem. In 1993, he was honoured as Kitchener Citizen of the Year in recognition of his public contributions, and his commitment and dedication to the community. He served on the boards of numerous organizations including St. Mary's St. Vincent de Paul, The Working Centre, the Anna Kaljas House, St. John's Kitchen and Reaching Our Outdoor Friends.

Wintermeyer played an integral role in the development of Hockey Canada, serving as President and Director, and he was Chairman of the Canadian Olympic Hockey Foundation.

In 1994, St. Jerome's University created the John J. Wintermeyer Chair, and in 2000 the University established the John J. Wintermeyer Lecture in Christianity and Public Policy. In his honour, the City of Waterloo established Wintermeyer Park along the Grand River.

Passed away peacefully at K-W Health Centre of Grand River Hospital surrounded by family on Sunday, November 9, 2003.

David Shoniker in his 69th year was the beloved husband of Mary Ann (nee Kickham) Shoniker for 35 years. Loving father of Michelle and her husband Vaughn Henderson, Erin, ON, Kellie and her husband Jeff Lefaive, Whitby, John Shoniker and his wife Shelley of Oakville, Justin Shoniker and his wife Jennifer of Guelph. Dear grandfather of Harry and Jack Shoniker. Dear brother of Dr. Tom and his wife Anne Shoniker of Kitchener and Peggy Roehrig and her late husband Bud of Buffalo.

James had a lifelong enthusiasm for books and all music genres, including the bagpipes, and especially the Rock and Roll genius of Lennon and Jagger. He was an avid fan of sports cars and took pride in the power and beauty of his Triumph TR3. He had a special affinity for horseback riding and caring for the family dogs. To these relationships he brought his true spirit of life. Above all, he was caring and giving, never hesitating to help a friend or stranger, and never waning in his love and interest in family. After a long and difficult life with Schizophrenia, James is released, free once again to be purely himself. A private family service will be held at a later date. "We can't help everyone, but everyone can help someone" (John Lennon).
