    MR. CHRISTIAN ESCH PASSES ON MONDAY

    ONE OF OLD PIONEER OF WATERLOO COUNTY ANSWERS CALL

    There passed away at his home in Woolwich township, on Monday, one of the old pioneers of Waterloo county in the person of Mr. Christian Esch. Born in Woolwich township seventy-one years ago, he has spent practically his entire life in the same township, residing for the past thirty years on the same farm. He leaves a wife and one son, Orville of Woolwich township, as well as two little grandchildren.

    There survive also four brothers and four sisters. Two brothers, Menno and Peter live in Saskatchewan, Menno in Woodstock and Amos in Conestogo. The sisters are Mrs. John Ziegler of Souris, Man., Mrs. E. Rose of Gladwin, Mich., Mrs. John Graham of Moorefield, and Mrs. John Steddick of Elmira.

    Mr. Esch was a well-known and widely esteemed resident of Woolwich and his death, though not unexpected, owing to his long illness, causes, nevertheless, a gap in the life of the community and not to be easily filled.

    MR. AMOS ESCH

    The death occurred at the K-W Hospital on Sunday at six a.m. of Mr. Amos Esch, after a brief illness.

    The departed who was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Michael Esch was born at Drayton on April 15th, 1867.

    On March 2nd, 1898, he was married to Miss Esther Musselman who pre-deceased him January 2nd, 1932. Following their marriage, the couple resided at Floradale for a few years when they moved to the farm where he resided since that time (now occupied by his son Clayton).

    Mr. Esch retired from active farming about 17 years ago when his son took over the farm. He was the last member of the family of Mich. Esch. He is survived by two sons, Clayton of Conestogo and Russell of Elmira, and one daughter (Pearl) Mrs. Roy Klinck, also of Elmira. There are also five grand-children.

    The remains rested at his late home where a brief service was held on Tuesday afternoon. at 2 o'clock followed by the main service at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church of which he was a member for many years. Burial was made. in the adjoining cemetery. Flowers were omitted.

    INSTANTLY KILLED

    While making electrical connections at the top of a pole, Emerson Esch, an employee of the Berlin Light Commission, received 2,200 voltage and was killed instantly. The fatality occurred shortly after 10 o'clock this morning at the corner of Church and Queen Streets, in front of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Esch was on the top of the pole working on the wires, when suddenly his body stiffened, while the belt which helped support him to the pole, saved him from falling to the ground. When removed from the pole by fellow workman life was extinct. The exact manner in which he came in contact with the wires is not known. His left had was severely burned.


    Doctors Lackner and Towers reached the scene and after examination of the body pronounced death instaneous [sic]. The body was left in charge of the police with instructions to have it removed to the undertaking parlors. After a wait of three quarter of an hour, the ambulance arrived, when Undertaker Seibert took charge of the body.

    The victim of the accident is a married man 24 years old with a family of one child, residing on Cedar Street North. He is a son of Mr. Christian Esch, of Elmira and had been in the employee of the Commission for three years.- Berlin News Record.

    The funeral will be held from his fathers residence about half a mile west of Elmira on Friday, August 11th at 2 p.m.

    MRS. AARON HOFFER

    Mrs. Aaron Hoffer age 77 yrs. Of 74 Arthur St., Elmira died at the K-W Hospital on Tuesday May 8 after a short illness. She was the former Edith Esch daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Menno Esch and was born July 4th 1884 in Manitoba.

    She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Member of the Ladies Aid and the W.M.M.S.

    Surviving are her husband whom she married March 28, 1910 at Elmira, one son A. John of Elmira, five daughters; Mrs. Stewart (Lloy Reichard) Elmira, Mrs. Kenneth (Ruth McLaughlin) of Exeter, Mrs. Frank (Trudy Klinck) of Elmira, Mrs. Stewart (Vivian) Huehn, Elmira, Mrs. Rev. Carl (Jean Wagner), Beamsville, 14 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, one sister Mrs. Guerta MacArthur, Vancouver, 2 brothers and 2 sisters predeceased her.

    Remains at the Dreisinger Funeral parlor Elmira until Friday at 1 when removal will be made to St. Paul's Lutheran church for service at 3 p.m. Burial will take place in the Elmira Cemetery Rev. Frank Malinsky will officiate.

    Wm. Steddick.-Another unexpected death, was that of William Steddick of Floradale, after only a few days illness. A sad feature in connection is that the fatiler of the deceased has lain seriously ill for about a week, an injury from a fall being followed by a severe attack of pneumonia. William Steddick was born in Salem in 1885. Later the family moved to Floradale where his father had charge of the hotel until he bought the Zilliax house has had charge of the hotel at Floradale. In April 1907, he was married to Miss Mary Lorch, who survives him. He is also survived by his parents, one brother and one sister. The funeral took place on Friday morning to the R.C. church at Elora thence to the R.C. cemetery for burial. The pallbearers were, A.J. Ruggle, J. B. Weber, Chas. Schuetz, Robt. Slimnon, Lodis Fischer, Wm. Wagner.

    Ruth Pearl McLaughlin September 3, 1916 to December 28, 2009 Ruth Pearl McLaughlin was born on September 3, 1916 in Elmira, Ontario, to Aaron and Edith Hoffer. She was married in 1942 to Kenneth McLaughlin who passed away in 1984. Ruth was the second oldest of six siblings and was predeceased by sisters Lloy Reichard, Trudy Klinck and Vivian Huehn. Her brother John Hoffer of Winnipeg and her sister Jeannie (Carl) Wagner of Kitchener will miss her dearly. Survived and much loved by her daughter, Margaret Ann (Peggy) McArthur of Simcoe, her sons Michael and his wife Nella of Brookville, and Richard and his wife Karen of Mississauga; grandchildren, Ryan and his wife Maggie, Dana and her husband Brad, and Erin. Also left to treasure her memory is great-grandson Gabriel. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service for friends and family will be held at Dreisinger Funeral Home in Elmira on Saturday, January 2, 2010. The family would welcome all to come between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to share your memories of Ruth, and attend the service at 3 p.m. Interment will be private and held at a later date in Elmira Union Cemetery. Our family would like to thank the staff at Cedarwood Gardens retirement home in Simcoe, Ontario, for their loving care of Mom for the past several years. Special thanks also to the staff at Norfolk County Hospital for their kindness during the last few days of Mom's life. Finally, we cannot thank Dr. Paul Kursell enough for his caring, both on a medical and a personal level. Mom believed in charity and gave freely her entire life. Born in Elmira, Ontario to Rene and Aaron Hoffer on June 24, 1918, he graduated in 1939 from OAC in Guelph. He was an excellent tennis player. He was actively involved in his community in Elmira serving on Church, town and county councils. He worked with his father in the family baby bootie business and in 1957 joined Uniroyal. In 1964 he and Jean and the children moved to Winnipeg. In 1978 he joined MIA chemicals, a division of Fiberglas Canada. He retired in 1983. Jack will be remembered as a true gentleman, a loving husband, father and grandfather and great-grandfather. He was always interested in people and places. He had a gentle nature, a lovely sense of humour and was "a charmer". He was truly a good and honourable man who loved the Lord. In his younger days he travelled extensively and in his retirement he and Jean wintered in California and Arizona. Jack loved good scotch, great beef and fine, old cheese. He loved a good party, was a wonderful dancer, knew everything about birds and trees, loved sitting on the deck in Gimli with binoculars and "preferred the company of younger people", particularly his children and grandchildren. He golfed and played bridge into his nineties. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service and interment will be held on Saturday, November 3rd at 11: 30 a.m. at the Elmira Union Cemetery on Church Street in Elmira.

Survived by sisters, Ruth McLaughlin, Vivian Huehn, and Jean Wagner; brother, John "Jack" Hoffer; brothers-in-law, Carl Wagner and Ab Lorch and many nieces and nephews. For nearly twenty years, Trudy taught at the Guiding Light School in Elmira, putting into practice her love for children with special needs. Our special thanks to the staff at Chateau Gardens Assisted Living Centre, Elmira, where Trudy lived the past five years, and to the nurses and staff on 6 South and the O.R. doctors and nurses at Grand River Hospital. Trudy's family will welcome visitors Sunday, October 14, 2007 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Dreisinger Funeral Home in Elmira. Funeral service will be conducted by the Rev. Richard Frey on Monday, October 15, 2007 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Elmira where Trudy was a lifelong member. Interment will follow at Elmira's Union Cemetery
