    COBER, NANCY LOUISA (Nee Panabaker)

Mrs. J. N. Cober, at her home on Friday evening, April 20, 1923. She had been ailing for some weeks with an incurable trouble and her death was not unexpected. She was born in Waterloo Township over 72 years ago, the daughter of the late David Panabaker. She has been a resident of Hespeler and vicinity all her life and in her death, Hespeler mourns one of her oldest residents. She has made her life felt in the community, for she was not only actively connected with church work, being a lifelong member of the Methodist Church but she was interested herself in all relief work of the town and was president of the Mother's Club. Many the tempting dishes that found their way to the sick were from Mrs. Cober's own home. She was a neighbour unto those in need. Just ten years ago, almost to the day, her husband died quite suddenly. The survivors are: Mrs. Milton Ward of Brandon; Mrs. John D. Murdoch of Zealandia; Mrs. Russell Gordon of Kindersley; Mrs. Joseph R. Darwen of Hespeler; Mrs. Rev. J. D. Taylor of Galt; Albert H. of Hespeler; sisters and brothers, Mrs. S. Chambers of Ethel; Mrs. Catharine Bechtel of Cabri, SK; Miss Susannah Panabaker of Hespeler; Miss Lizzie Panabaker of Cabri; Aaron W. Panabaker, Levi, Abraham A. and C. A., all of Hespeler; Arnold of Winnipeg. The funeral, which was held on Monday afternoon, was very largely attended. The services were conducted by Rev. W. G. Buell and Rev. W. H. Harvey of Waterloo. Mrs. C. H. Bleich sang. She was borne to her last resting place in Hespeler Cemetery by six nephews: David, George, John, Frank and James Panabaker; and Vernon Cober.

-Information from the death certificate: Of Hungerford Rd. in Hespeler. Born in Waterloo Township on January 2, 1851, daughter of David Panabaker and Catherine Warner.

Falls 40 Feet And Dies At Hospital - Former Hespeler Mayor, D.N. Panabaker, Prominent in Public Life

Hespeler - D.N. Panabaker, 70, died in hospital at Galt on Thursday of injuries received when he fell forty feet to the ground from a lookout platform of the Pioneers Memorial Tower near Doon. Chief Coroner W.A. Woolner said there will be no inquest. Panabaker, who served as Mayor of Hespeler for many years, was conscious when found but said later he could not explain how the accident occurred. Panabaker was the president of the Waterloo Historical Society, responsible for erection of the Memorial Tower.

For many years identified with the Canadian woolen industry as manager of the Hespeler division, Dominion Woolens and Worsteds Ltd., he was known as an authority in Canadian Woolen circles. Born n Waterloo Township 70 years ago, serving on the town council Hespeler, of Pennsylvania Dutch stock, he became one of the most reliable authorities on the early history of the Pennsylvania Dutch settlers in this country. It was through his efforts that the Memorial Tower from which he fell was erected to the memory of the county's early pioneers.

He was prominent in civic affairs of Hespeler and the county for many years serving on the town council and later on the county council as reeve. He was later elected warden of the county. He was an active member of the United Church. He was a past president of the waterloo County Children's aid Society and also of the Ontario Children's Aid Society. He was also a past president of the Waterloo County Canadian Club.

His entire life was spent in Hespeler where he entered the employ of the R. Forbes Woolen Company as a youth, rising to manager of the concern which later became a division of the Dominion Woolens and Worsteds Ltd. He retired from active connection with the firm about ten years ago. In later years he had been identified with the Hespeler Felt Company.

Besides his wife he is survived by three sons, Wilbur of Saskatchewan, Frank of Hamilton, distinguished Canadian landscape painter, and Reeve James Panabaker of Hespeler. Four brothers, Levi and C.A. of Hespeler, Arnold of Blair and Ephraim in the West, with three sisters, the Misses Susan and Elizabeth of Hespeler and Mrs. Chambers of Atwood, also survive.

Memorable Manitobans: George Waldron Prout (1878-c1980)

    Financial agent, MLA (1916-1920).

Born in Barbados on 5 June 1878, one of ten children of school teachers Joseph Benjamin Prout (1852-1940) and Mary Trotman Hutchinson (1854-1920), he was educated privately and emigrated to Manitoba in 1897, where he worked as a financial agent at Selkirk.

He stood for election in the provincial election of 1914, being defeated by Walter Humphries Montague, by three votes. In 1915, he was elected as a Liberal representative for the constituency of Kildonan-St. Andrews. Given that his mother was identified in the 1911 Canadian census as being of "Negro" ancestry, this would potentially make him the first Black MLA in Manitoba history. He ran in the 1920 and 1927 general elections but was defeated each time.

He was married twice, first on 18 April 1906 to Alice Maude Cober (1874-1907) with whom he had a daughter, Alice Marion Prout (1907-2010), and second on 2 September 1914 to Emma Evans McKinley (1882-1982), daughter of John DeWitt H. McKinley of Dresden, Ohio. They had a son, George Waldron Prout (1915-1915).

By the mid-1930s, he was living at Toronto, Ontario and working as a financial agent. Separated from his wife and daughter in 1937, and formally divorced in 1939, he lived at Toronto for the remainder of his life, possibly serving as a senior executive at Canada Packers.

He died at Toronto, Ontario around 1980.

    Notes:

Frank Panabaker had his first show at the Preston Springs Hotel in 1927. From that time, he was a fully self-supporting professional artist. With his wife Katherine's support and able assistance, more exhibitions followed across southern Ontario. Several wealthy sponsors provided a steady, albeit small income in exchange for paintings which carried the young couple through the difficult depression years.

His artistic career was launched one summer when the artist McGillivray Knowles arrived in town to teach a sketching class. Frank's father, impressed by his son's early interest and talent in drawing, suggested that the 16 year-old might like to join the class, rather than push heavy carts through the steaming woolen mill.

Obituary: Former McMaster chancellor John Panabaker was 'generous and kind'
Waterloo resident was devoted to university for more than seven decades

John Panabaker, who served as the 14th chancellor of McMaster University, is being remembered as "generous and kind" and for his longtime devotion to the university.

The respected Canadian businessperson and Order of Canada recipient \emdash who died Feb. 5 at age 94 in Waterloo \emdash was involved with the university for seven decades, starting when he came to the university as a student in 1946.

He was active in the school's debating society and in producing many publications from the McMaster Students Union. In 1968, he joined the board of governors and served on it for 12 years, including the last two as chair.

He became chancellor in 1986, taking over from former academic and top civil servant Allan Leal. Panabaker served for six years and was succeeded by diplomat James Taylor.

Panabaker, a former president of the Mutual Life Assurance Company of Canada, also made many financial donations to McMaster and founded the John H. Panabaker Trust Fund and the Panabaker Digitization Trust. He served on the board of the school's art gallery and helped build it into the McMaster Museum of Art.

"Dr. Panabaker was a steadfast, thoughtful and articulate McMaster leader from his days as a student to his time as chair of the board of governors, then as chancellor and beyond," McMaster president David Farrar said in a statement.

"His relationship with our university began in the shadow of the Second World War and endured for more than three quarters of a century. The impact of his volunteer efforts and philanthropy will extend at least that long again, I am sure."

Carol Podedworny, director and chief curator of the art museum, called Panabaker's impact monumental.

"While his initial and significant financial contribution to the museum has long supported our operations, more recently his continued vision and generosity enabled the museum to digitize our entire permanent collection \emdash a task many institutions are only beginning to undertake," she said in a statement. "John was a thoughtful, supportive, generous and kind donor."

In 1981, Panabaker received an honorary doctor of laws degree from McMaster and, a year later, he was inducted into the McMaster Alumni Gallery. He received the McMaster Students Union Alumni Association Lifetime Leadership Award in 1997 and the McMaster Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award in 2011. He was presented with many other honours, including the Order of Canada in 1990 and the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award in 2014.

Panabaker was born July 31, 1928. He grew up in Preston and graduated from Preston High School. He was one of the first to be inducted into that school's hall of fame in 2005.

While he was going to McMaster, he went to work part-time for Mutual Life, which is based in Waterloo and was founded in 1870. Panabaker graduated from McMaster with a bachelor of arts in 1950 and received the Chancellor's Gold Medal. He obtained his masters in economics in 1954 from the university.

Panabaker eventually went to work full-time for Mutual Life in 1954 and rose up the corporate ladder. He became executive vice-president in 1969, president and CEO in 1973, chair and CEO in 1982 and chair in 1985. He retired in 1989.

Panabaker served as a director on many other company boards, including Maple Leaf Mills and Bell Canada. He served as head of the Corporate-Higher Education Forum, which was founded in 1983 to foster more co-operation between businesses and universities and to boost financial support for post-secondary schools.

Panabaker was involved with such groups as the Kitchener-Waterloo Community Foundation, Waterloo Public Library Board, Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra Association and the Freeport Hospital in Kitchener.

Panabaker is survived by his children, David, James, Leslie, Doran and Ian, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Janet, who died at 98 in 2022. He is also predeceased by his brother Robert.
