    COBER, NANCY LOUISA (Nee Panabaker)

Mrs. J. N. Cober, at her home on Friday evening, April 20, 1923. She had been ailing for some weeks with an incurable trouble and her death was not unexpected. She was born in Waterloo Township over 72 years ago, the daughter of the late David Panabaker. She has been a resident of Hespeler and vicinity all her life and in her death, Hespeler mourns one of her oldest residents. She has made her life felt in the community, for she was not only actively connected with church work, being a lifelong member of the Methodist Church but she was interested herself in all relief work of the town and was president of the Mother's Club. Many the tempting dishes that found their way to the sick were from Mrs. Cober's own home. She was a neighbour unto those in need. Just ten years ago, almost to the day, her husband died quite suddenly. The survivors are: Mrs. Milton Ward of Brandon; Mrs. John D. Murdoch of Zealandia; Mrs. Russell Gordon of Kindersley; Mrs. Joseph R. Darwen of Hespeler; Mrs. Rev. J. D. Taylor of Galt; Albert H. of Hespeler; sisters and brothers, Mrs. S. Chambers of Ethel; Mrs. Catharine Bechtel of Cabri, SK; Miss Susannah Panabaker of Hespeler; Miss Lizzie Panabaker of Cabri; Aaron W. Panabaker, Levi, Abraham A. and C. A., all of Hespeler; Arnold of Winnipeg. The funeral, which was held on Monday afternoon, was very largely attended. The services were conducted by Rev. W. G. Buell and Rev. W. H. Harvey of Waterloo. Mrs. C. H. Bleich sang. She was borne to her last resting place in Hespeler Cemetery by six nephews: David, George, John, Frank and James Panabaker; and Vernon Cober.

-Information from the death certificate: Of Hungerford Rd. in Hespeler. Born in Waterloo Township on January 2, 1851, daughter of David Panabaker and Catherine Warner.

    ___________

Memorable Manitobans: George Waldron Prout (1878-c1980)

    Financial agent, MLA (1916-1920).

Born in Barbados on 5 June 1878, one of ten children of school teachers Joseph Benjamin Prout (1852-1940) and Mary Trotman Hutchinson (1854-1920), he was educated privately and emigrated to Manitoba in 1897, where he worked as a financial agent at Selkirk.

He stood for election in the provincial election of 1914, being defeated by Walter Humphries Montague, by three votes. In 1915, he was elected as a Liberal representative for the constituency of Kildonan-St. Andrews. Given that his mother was identified in the 1911 Canadian census as being of "Negro" ancestry, this would potentially make him the first Black MLA in Manitoba history. He ran in the 1920 and 1927 general elections but was defeated each time.

He was married twice, first on 18 April 1906 to Alice Maude Cober (1874-1907) with whom he had a daughter, Alice Marion Prout (1907-2010), and second on 2 September 1914 to Emma Evans McKinley (1882-1982), daughter of John DeWitt H. McKinley of Dresden, Ohio. They had a son, George Waldron Prout (1915-1915).

By the mid-1930s, he was living at Toronto, Ontario and working as a financial agent. Separated from his wife and daughter in 1937, and formally divorced in 1939, he lived at Toronto for the remainder of his life, possibly serving as a senior executive at Canada Packers.

He died at Toronto, Ontario around 1980.
