    Notes:

December 29th, 1863, the new roll book was presented, and, having been recently purged, contained 288 names. This is a feature of the life of this congregation that is worthy of that emphasis that gives prominence, namely, the annual purging of the church roll. That has been, all along, faithfully done. It has not been suffered to fall into a worthless assemblage of names, of many of whom no good account could be given. A church roll, if not carefully watched, soon becomes untrustworthy. The movement of people in this new land is so great, and some times, too, they are si fickle and restless, that change seems to be essential to their life. But while that is the case, usually the strong-minded and valuable members have continuance and abide. They are firm as a rock, and support the cause with which they are identified.
About this time a movement was made for additions to the Eldership, and at successive meetings all the proper steps were taken. A list of seven names was chosen, of which only one could be induced to accept the office, namely, Mr. John Habbick. Mr. John Goldie was at this, as at other times, chosen to serve in this office, but always " he expressed a decided refusal to the acceptance of the office of Elder."
