LEVI ALLEN GEHL

PRESTON, Oct. 9 - Ailing for the past three years and seriously ill for the past six months, Levi Allen Gehl, wellknown Preston resident, died at his home here yesterday afternoon. He was in his 78th year. Born in Freeport, the late Mr. Gehl farmed there until 23 years ago when he came to Preston, making his home here since that time. He was employed at the Otto Homuth and Sons, Ltd., plant until three years ago when illness necessitated his retirement. The deceased was a past noble grand of Cambridge Lodge, 1.0.0.F., Preston and also a member of the Encampment, having been treasurer of the Encampment for a number of years. The late Mr. Gehl was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church and a former member of the church council. Surviving are his wife, formerly Mary Levandusky; a stepdaughter, Mrs. James Mathieson, Port Credit; a stepson, Harold Levandusky, Preston, and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at the residence, 223 Dover Street, Preston, on Sunday at 2: 30. Interment will be in the Preston Cemetery.

TRIED TO ESCAPE, KILLED BY GUARD

Abraham Hertel, Formerly of Freeport, Shot While Trying to Escape

News reached Berlin Thursday, of a Detroit sensation in which the principal was former resident of Freeport where his father still resides. The man in question was Abram Hertel, who died Wednesday in Detroit Hospital, from the effects of a bullet wound, having been shot by a constable from whom he was trying to escape.

Hertel had been arrested on a charge of forgery, and it was while he was being taken to jail that he tried to escape on a pretext of saying goodbye to his children, and was shot in the leg. He was then removed to the hospital, where a few nights ago he was seen by one of the guards descending a ladder from one of the windows of the hospital, threatening to shoot if he did not, The guard shouted to him to stop, but Hertel never heeded the threat, and the guard shot him. Hertel was then taken back to his room, where he lingered between life and death until Wednesday. He is a married man and was in Berlin for some weeks last summer with his wife. His father is Mr. Herman Hertel of Freeport, who is a highly respected citizen.

Following are extracts from the Detroit Evening News which gives fuller particulars of the shooting

"Hertel was on the third, or top floor, and in the rear of the ward. He was so located that the officer might sit in the hall and watch his every movement. The toilet room is reached by a door, directly opposite Hertel's bed and three or four feet from it. A window leads from the toilet to a ladder or fire escape, and from the latter to the root of the one story clinic building to the east of the hospital proper."

This extract is part of the story of the shooting told by Officer Greene who had been detailed to keep a watch over Hertel at the hospital

"I had just taken my eyes off Hertel for a fraction of a minute and found he was gone. .. As he started down the ladder I grabbed him, by the coat but he had such ¹ hold of the iron railing that I could do nothing with him."

The following dialogue then occurred:

"For God's sake don't try to escape, or I'll have to shoot you."

"I won't stop," said Hertel. "Then I'll have to shoot."

Hertel had just reached the bottom of the 15-foot ladder when Greene fired the first shot, which fractured Hertel's left clavicle. Even then Hertel would not give up, but continued across the tar roof toward Second St.

"Halt! Halt! or I'll shoot again," cried the officer.

Hertel only ran the faster, and, pulling his revolver, Greene took aim and fired. This time the bullet entered Hertel's back, taking a down ward course, and, it is believed, pierced the kidneys.

"Hertel had just reached the edge of the roof," continued Greene, "and as the second shot struck him, he seemed to topple over, and I found him on the ground in the yard in the rear of the clinic building."

""Officer,' he said to me, I've done you a wrong by trying to escape." I said to him. "You've done yourself more wrong." Then he said. You've shot me through and I'm done for.' I then tried to quiet him by telling him that he would not die.

In Detroit deceased went by the name of George Hartle.

Fifteen years ago Hertel was a prisoner in Berlin jail and ran away and was not recaptured.

Stricken with a sudden heart attack at the home of friends in Toronto, Mrs. Adam S. Scharman, Freeport, passed away on Monday evening, in her 63rd year. Deceased had been attending the C.N.E. that day and death came very suddenly and un-expetedly. Well known in the Freeport district, she was a. daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Herman Hattel, and was born at Centreville, Feb. 1874, 45 years ago she married Adam S. Scharman at Kitchener. She was a member of the St. Peter's Lutheran church, Kitchener. She is survived by her husband, two daughters, Mrs. E. Berner, Kitchener, Mrs. A. Irvine, Waterloo, two sons, Alton Scharman and Lome Scharman, both of Freeport, four brothers, Norman and Herman Harrel, of Freeport and Amos and Jacob of Preston, two sisters, Mrs. Henry Dipple and Mrs. Anthony Lewandousky, both of Kitchener and nine grandchildren. One daughter Vera predeceased her 5 years ago and two sons predeceased her in infancy. Funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon, at 2 p.m., to St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Kichener, for services at three p.m. Interment was made at St. Peter's Lutheran cemetery. Rev. Dr. H. A. Sperling officiated.

Run Over By Street Car

Berlin, Ont., March 28 - After having crossed the Preston & Berlin Street Railway bridge at Freeport a young woman was knocked down and fatally injured by a P. & B. car leaving this city at 10.05 last night. The crew stopped the car, and the injured girl was conveyed to the home of Herman Hertel, jun., where she succumbed an hour later without regaining consciousness. Dr. A. Ochs, Preston, was attending the victim when death took place. It was not until this afternoon that the remains were recognized as those of Miss Loretta Shantz, the daughter of Daniel Shantz, a farmer on the Preston road, near Berlin. She had been engaged as a domestic at the farm of Lincoln Hagey, a farmer on the Breslau and Preston road, and had left Berlin in the evening. After doing some shopping she had walked to within a few yards of the road leading to her home when run over by the car. Deceased was twenty-two years of age.

August 19, 1902 - June 24, 1999 At age 96, at Freeport Health Centre of Grand River Hospital, our dear Mom and Gramma, the nucleus of our family left us peacefully, with her children by her side, to be reunited with her loved one's and her dear "Jule"; gone before her to eternal life. Her love of family gatherings, flowers, fishing, play cards, bowling, crocheting, sewing and her faith in God, kept her cherishing each and every day. She was our shining example of zest for life and unconditional love and caring for others. She will live forever in our hearts like a "Rose" with never ending beauty. Edna was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church and the Ladies of the Moose. Mother to Sherwood and his wife Gloria of Waterloo, Douglas and his wife Janice, Donald and his wife Margaret and Carol and her husband Enos Lichti, all of Kitchener, Thelma and her husband Wilfrid North of Brantford; sister to Gertrude Henderson and Violet Linder, both of Kitchener; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren also survive. Predeceased by her parents, Henry Dippel and Hannah Hertel; her husband, Julius in 1956; one son, Arnold who was killed in action in France in 1944; two grandchildren; two brothers, Harold and Wilfred and four sisters, Laura, Bernice, Thelma and Marion. Friends may call at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, 621 King St. W.. HERTEL, Leonard Richard - "Entered into life more abundant", Leonard Richard Hertel, of St. Luke's Place, Cambridge, on Thursday, Feb. 15, 1996, in his 84th year, at Cambridge Memorial Hospital.

Beloved husband of Helen Isabel Fisher; much loved father of Paul Eric and his wife Ute Gertrude of Amherstburg, Catherine Frances of Kitchener and Gregory Louis and his wife Karen Anne of Toronto. Also sur vived by two nieces, two nephews, several cousins and many good friends.

Born in Waterloo township, he was predeceased by his parents, Jacob Richard Hertel and Mary Frances McKie; a brother, Alexander Peter and a sister, Florence Stratton.

Mr. Hertel was a member of St. Andrew's Hespeler Presbyterian Church, a long time elder and former Clerk of Session. He also served on the Board of Managers, on numerous com mittees and as Sunday School Superintendent in earlier years.

He retired in 1977 from the Federal Civil Service where he had been a highly respected employment counsel lor in Kitchener and later in Cambridge.

A talented violinist, Mr. Hertel enjoyed playing in the First Violin section of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony for 25 years. He also played in numerous area musical groups and musical productions.

Chairman of the former Hespeler Public School Board for several years, the Centennial Public School on Weaver Street was built in 1958 during his term as Chair. Mr. Hertel was a Past Master of Preston Masonic Lodge AF & AM No. 297, a Past Principal of Preston Chapter R.A.M. No. 245, the Otto Klotz Lodge No. 731 and Heritage Lodge No. 730. He also served as DDGM for the former Wellington District of the Grand Lodge of Ontario and as Grand Superintend ent of the Royal Arch Masons of Ontario, Wellington District No. 4.

Cremation has taken place.

Visitation will take place at the Nelson Funeral Home, 1766 Franklin Blvd., Cambridge on Saturday, Feb. 17, 1996 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew's Hespeler Presbyterian Church, 73 Queen St. E., Cambridge on Sunday, Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. Clergy officiating will be the Rev. Wilfrid McLeod and the Rev. Gray Rivers of Dundas. Masonic Brethren of the district are
invited to attend in a body. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Andrew's Hespeler Presbyterian Church Building Fund, Saint Luke's Place or Cambridge Memorial Hospital, would be appreciated.
