Death of Alfred Boomer, Esq., of Linwood.

After an illness of several months Mr. Alfred Boomer died from heart trouble, at his home in Linwood at 1.30 a.m. on January 27th. Mr. Boomer was a son of the late John Boomer, one of Halton county's earliest settlers, and was born on the homestead, lot 2, con. 7, Esquesing, near Hornby. In the days of his early manhood the family removed to Waterloo county where for half a century deceased has resided. He was an influential man in this county, enjoying universal respect and esteem, and he has for many years been Justice of the Peace and Clerk of the Division Court. He was an active member of the Methodist church, and through the efforts of himself and family the church at Linwood was largely sustained. Mr. Boomer was one of the oldest members, being looked upon as the father of the church here, and he was widely known all over the western peninsula, having attended several sessions of the Hamilton Conference as delegate from the Linwood circuit. In politics he was an ardent Liberal and he was also an energetic Prohibitionist.

His ready sympathy in time of bereavement, his generosity in church matters, his kindness to the poor, and his estimable character make his loss very deeply felt by the people of Linwood.

He is survived by his sorrowing widow and a family of five daughters: Misses Clara and Edith, at home: Mrs. M. Grimm, Milverton; Mrs. Rutherford, Toronto, and Mrs. Musselman, in the N. W. T., to whom the profound sympathy of the entire community is extended.

The funeral left on Saturday for Hawkesville where the interment took place. The service at the house was conducted by Rev. J. C. Cameron, of the North Mornington Presbyterian church; Rev. S. Cunningham, of St. Andrews' Church, Hawkesville, and Rev. Dixon Sharpe, pastor of the Linwood Methodist church. The casket was entirely covered with floral tributes consisting of: a large circle of roses, carnations and ripened wheat, by the family; an anchor from Mr. John Boomer, of London, brother of the deceased; a large spray of tulips and foliage, from Mr. J. Bowes of Peterborough ; a spray of carnations, by Miss Quimbach, of Berlin; a flat boquet [sic] of carnations and smilax, from Dr. and Mrs. McEachern: a spray of carnations and lilies of the valley, by Miss Baldwin. The pall-bearers were Messrs. D. Ratz, of Elmira: D. B. Musselman, of Berlin; John Bowes, of Elora; R. McCallum, of Hawkesville ; R. Y. Fish and Robt. Hosea, of Linwood.

    LETTER FROM LINWOOD.

DEAR SIR, - Allow me through the medium of your widely circulated journal to correct a report that has gained currency through the country, and which seems calculated to damage for a time at least the business of this Village, as many persons have already in consequence been deterred from coming to the place

I refer to the rumour that "Typhoid Fever is raging in the Village," &c. I have to say that since the first of November last, there have been not more then four distinct cases, two of which are now convalescent, and hopes are entertained of the others. The former have been successfully treated by Dr. Lount, of the Village of Hawksville, And the latter are under the care of Drs. Vardon and Lount respectively there have been some cases of the lungs, Bowel complaint, &c., otherwise the Village is in a most healthy state. I think the alarm bas been occasioned through a meeting which was held some ten days ago, at the Commercial Hotel, to consider the case of a poor man afflicted with this complaint and to tender such relief as might be considered necessary, the result of which was that a very handsome sum was subscribed and paid and a man employed to wait upon and look after the wants of his family. Medical man do not look upon this fever as very contagious, and there appears to be no occasion for alarm. Indeed thus far only one of those who have waited upon and nursed the sick have been affected by the contagion, it seems to be more ecomomical than contagious in its nature. By giving the above a place in your columns, you will confer a favour.

    Yours, &c.,
    A. BOOMER.

    THE BOOMER "WINDFALL."

Some time ago an item was going the rounds of the papers to the effect that the Boomer family had fallen heir to a large and valuable estate in Nova Scotia. In order to obtain particulars a "Chronicle" reporter called upon Mr. A. Boomer of Linwood who is Division Court clerk for the township of Wellesley etc and found him busily engaged in his apiary, which numbers some 45 colonies. Mr. B, by the way, is an enthusiast in apiculture and in reply to our enquiries as to his method of wintering he replied that he preferred outdoor to cellar wintering, although the latter plan was much less trouble and where the cellar possessed the proper requisites they might be wintered as successfully there as in packing cases outside. He further stated that the bees had stood the past winter very well, that he had not lost a single colony, and that they were now in fine shape for a successful season.

We next enquired as to the accuracy of the reports of the Nova Scotia Estate, to which Mr. B replied:- "Since the reports appeared in the newspapers I have been in constant correspondence with our friends both in Ontario and Nova Scotia, and from the information I have been able to gather from these and other sources, I am now quite satisfied that we are the legitimate heirs to a very large and valuable estate in that province. Our friends there have made a careful search in the registry office and appear to have no doubt whatever as to our rights in a certain estate of which they have had a valuation made and $164,000 is said to be the value."

"Is the estate all in one parcel or has it been subdivided?" was then asked.

"The estate," replied Mr. B - "was originally in one parcel, but appears to have been very much subdivided which will no doubt make it very difficult and expensive to work out. I may say also that since the discovery of this estate was made we are informed that another and very valuable estate is open to us in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England, the birth place of our grand parents."

"What steps do you purpose taking to realize upon these properties?" our reporter asked.

"Well," replied Mr. B "we have instructed a solicitor to take the necessary steps to that end at once; but as so many of these reported windfalls fail to materialize according to expectations we are not building upon them as yet, and intend plodding along as usual. If anything should come out of it we shall of course be pleased; it nothing comes out of it we shall not be disappointed."
