Lifetimes: A passion for vintage vehicles and teaching others

When Tom Schmidt and his new wife, Marcia, embarked on their Northern Ontario honeymoon in July of 1968, she had no idea what the vintage car buff had in mind.

Fortunately, she had a rich sense of humour. And patience, lots of patience.

"We travelled from one wrecking yard to the next," she said of her new husband's less than romantic idea of a fun time for newlyweds.

To say Tom was obsessed with cars, all cars, particularly old cars, would be an understatement. This passion led to him becoming an expert, admired by vintage car collectors around the world. Marcia said he would receive phone calls from Europe and all over North America, asking advice on restoring the old clunkers or where to source parts. He seemed to know everyone and everything.

"They could give him the VIN (vehicle identification number) and he'd be able to tell them where it was built, when it was built and the colour," she said, noting her husband loved getting these calls and "would talk for hours" about cars, a subject that didn't particularly interest her.

Tom was born May 27, 1947, in Kitchener to Cletus and Naomi Schmidt.

Susan Pearson, his only sibling, said she is not sure where Tom discovered his love of automobiles and that he had an innate ability to fix anything, whether it was an old car or a household object. Much of what he learned came from reading books, she said.....

Tom was a founding member of the Highwaymen Car Club in Kitchener, formed in 1961 to preserve street rod, vintage and classic vehicles.

At car shows, Marcia said he would go all day without a break. He just could not bear to waste even a precious second doing anything outside of talking shop, sharing knowledge and helping people.

Tom was a perfectionist. When he took on a car project, he would strip the vehicle right down to the bolts. Everything had to be cleaned and restored.....
