    Notes:

Reuben A. Rittinger, who has served as manager of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce since 1958, will retire March 15, bringing to a close banking career that spans forty-three years.

R.D. Berry, manager of the branch at Elliott Lake has been approached to replace Mr. Rittinger. Born in Baden , January 26, 1911, Mr. Rittinger attended the Baden Public School and the Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate, Kitchener. Following graduation, he studied at the Euler Business College, Kitchener. He began his career in Waterloo, August 1928, receiving his first transfer in 1930 to Paris. Following this he served in Hamilton in 1931 and Ft. Erie in 1932.

In 1936, Mr. Rittinger was transferred to Grimsby where he took an active interest in sports, becoming president of the Bowling Club and the local Badminton Club. Following a transfer to Kitchener in 1940 and to Waterloo in 1942. Mr. Rittinger received his first appointment as manager at St. Clements in 1950 where he served until appointed manager of the Milverton Branch in 1958. While at Kitchener, Waterloo and St. Clements. Mr. Rittinger acted as treasurer for St. Marks Lutheran Church, Kitchener. He is a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Milverton.

Mr. Rittinger joined the Milverton Lion's Club in 1958 and was president of the club in 1961 - 62. In 1959, he joined the Masonic Lodge and was elected Master of the Lodge in 1967. He is also a member of Bernard chapter (Royal Arch Masons), Listowel. During the past twelve years, Mr. Rittinger served on several community boards - The Milverton Community Centre, The Recreation Committee, and the Planning Board.

Looking back over his years in the banking business, Mr. Rittinger notes many improvements, especially in the working hours and salary. A normal work day used to be from 8: 30 a.m. To 6: 00 p.m. With a six day week. Saturdays employees worked 8: 30 a.m. - 2: 30 p.m. Coffee breaks were unheard of during the depression years, and tellers carried a lunch pail, and on many busy days, they carried the uneaten lunch back home.

Starting salaries were $500.00 ($5,00 sic) per annum and jobs scarce. Many managers worked for $1, 600 per year and accountants - $1, 00 - $1, 200. "The discipline was strict and the going rough" , said Mr. Rittinger, "but people did not complain because jobs were scarce and anyone working was fortunate and very grateful." Mr. Rittinger notes that many changes will be taking place in the banking business during the next five years. "For example, all the posting and typing will be done at a central point, perhaps London or Kitchener for this area. While this will cut down on the number of people employed at various branches, it will call for more specialized personnel, requiring more supervisors and managers at department levels. However, Mr. Rittinger believes that Canada is a land of unlimited opportunity and that the future holds much promise for young people with ambition, who are industrious and willing to assume responsibility." "But," adds Mr. Rittinger, "it is also a land of Frightening Giants, known as Crime, Drugs, Pollution, Creating a real challenge for our young people of today, who will be the leaders of a better tomorrow."

Mr.and Mrs. Rittinger, the former Doris Entwistle of Fort Erie, are looking forward to Mr. Rittinger's retirement as a time for doing some travelling and enjoying their summer home at Point Clark on Lake Huron. Mr. And Mrs. Rittinger have two daughters, Mrs. Kenneth Hoffman, Oshawa, and Mrs. Gary Cooper, Galt and three grandchildren.
