    ______________

Brubacher. - Simeon, son of Samuel and Lydia Brubacher, was born at Berlin, Ont., April 28, 1864; died Feb. 2, 1915; aged 50 y. 9 m. 5 d. In 1889 he was married to Lucinda Snyder, with whom he lived in matrimony 26 years. The union was blessed with 4 children, 3 of whom survive. Owing to the death of his father, he was called upon to assume at the age of 15 years, the responsibilities of a man, by taking charge of his father's farm. At the age of 20 years he purchased the homestead on Brubacher Street, where he resided until 1893, when he moved to the farm on Edna Street, where he lived until his death. In addition to his occupation of farming, he carried on a lumber business for 20 years. Deceased was of a quiet and retiring disposition, a man who had many friends, and, so far as is known, not a single enemy. His integrity in all his dealings, his liberality in matters of charity, and his sympathetic nature, gained for him the respect of the entire community and of all with whom be came in contact. As a husband and father, he was kind and indulgent to his family, and while be will be greatly missed in the family circle, they have the assurance that he has gone to his heavenly home where he will be waiting to meet his loved ones and where there will be no more parting. Funeral services were held Feb. 5 from his late residence on Edna Street to the East End Mennonite Church and Cemetery, Berlin, Ont., for services and interment.. Bro. Jonas Snider officiated at the house and at the church impressive sermons were preached by Bro. Urias Weber from Jno. 6: 67,68, and Luke 12: 40; and by Bro. Fred Coffman from Jno. 14.

    A Young Life Ended
Death of Mrs. Josiah Cressman on Monday

The intelligence of the death of Mrs. Josiah Cressman which occurred at her home, a short distance from the town, on Monday, will come as a severe shock to all who enjoyed her acquaintance. Although naturally of a frail constitution and in delicate health a great deal, she was active and energetic. The illness that resulted in her death, inflammation of the kidneys, was only of two weeks' duration, and up till a few days before the end came, her death was never anticipated.

Mrs. Cressman was a comparatively young woman, being only in her 30th year. She was a kind and conscientious woman and endeared herself into the affections of all who knew her. She was universally popular and profound sympathy is extended to the bereaved husband in his hour of affiction.

The funeral will take place from the family residence at 9 o'clock on Thursday morning to the Strasburg cemetery.

CRESSMAN.-On the 25th of April, 1898, near Strasburg, Waterloo Co., Ont., of inflammation of the kidneys, from which she suffered but a few days, Sister Mary, beloved wife of Bro. Josiah Cressman, and youngest daughter of Samuel and Lydia Brubacher, aged 29 years, 10 months and 10 days. Buried in the Strasburg cemetery on the 28th. Our sister had been indelicate health for some years, but her sudden demise was a shock to all, for she was well known and highly esteemed as a faithful, consistent Christian. Her surviving husband, to whom she had been married but a few short years, has the sympathy of the whole community in his sore affliction. She also leaves her mother, three brothers and three sisters, and many other relatives and friends to mourn her early death. God comfort them in their sore affliction. Funeral services at the house by Jacob Gingrich, and at the Weber meetinghouse by E. S. Hallman in English from Isa. 35:10, and by Noah Stauffer in German from Phil. 1:21. The new meeting house was filled to overflowing.
    Not dead, but sleeping,
    Then cease your weeping,
    Dear Mary's with the blest;

    _______________________

The roots of Ontario paramedics go back to St. Thomas, where in 1961 Charles "Chuck" Brubacher created the privately owned Golden Acres Ambulance Service.

Months after Brubacher's death the County of Elgin Council is considering renaming the ambulance headquarters on Edward Street after him.

Brubacher died in April, 2017. He was 80.

Dave Rock, a young employee of Brubacher's in the 1960s, is one of the people most invested in the possible name change.

"He was a very outstanding individual and was certainly determined to make something out of the ambulance profession," Rock said in a presentation to Elgin County. "He saw that it was a real injustice the way the system was."

Brubacher was from St. Thomas. He worked in Kitchener-Waterloo for a time as an orderly before returning to invest in ambulance care.

Back then it was a loose system with few regulations -- if any -- built by private companies turning very little profit.

"How is it we needed three weeks training to be an orderly inside the hospital but no training to attend to horrific scenes?" Brubacher is quoted as saying.

Brubacher worked for years reshaping the ambulance system in St. Thomas, first as the owner of the Golden Acres Ambulance Company in the early 1960s. He later began work on a provincial stage, taking over as the second director for the then-relatively new Ambulance Services Branch, a position he held until 1977.

The innovative St. Thomas native also helped found the Ontario Ambulance Operators Association (OAOA).

Past president and executive director of the OAOA Jim Price, from Rodney, spoke highly of the work Brubacher was able to accomplish under the provincial banner....
