SNYDER.-On the 26th of May, in Waterloo Twp., Waterloo Co. Ontario, Levi Snyder, aged 74 years, 9 months and 9 days. He was buried on the 28th at Wanner's M. H., followed to the grave by a large number of relatives and friends. Appropriate remarks were made by Bish. Elias Weber from Matt. 6: 19-21 and Noah Stauffer from 2 Cor. 5: 1.

SNYDER - Absolom Snyder born in Waterloo Co., Ont., May 23rd 1817, died of paralysis on May 21st 1900, leaving four sons and three daughters to mourn the loss of a kind and loving father. He passed away at the ripe old age of 82 years, 11 months, and 29 days. A large circle of relatives and friends followed the remains to their last resting place at Wanner's M. H., on the 24th. Deceased united with the Mennonite Church in his youth and was a consistent member until his death. Funeral services at the house by Jacob Woolner, Sr., and at the M. H. by Noah Stauffer and Elias Weber. Sister Snyder preceded her husband nine years ago.

After the decease of his father in 1834 he had his home with his uncle, Benjamin Shantz who then resided at Freeport (Toll Bridge) on the old "Abraham C. Weber Farm." On March 5th, 1844, he was married to Anna, daughter of Jacob C. and Elizabeth (Cressman) Snider. She was born July 23rd, 1824, and died April 23rd, 1890. After his marriage' he moved on a farm adjoining the town of Waterloo where he was engaged in farming for a number of years. In connection with the farm he also had an interest in the Union Mills, Waterloo, and later in the Lancaster Mills of Bridgeport, Ontario. After the decease of his first wife he was again married to Elizabeth Reist, widow of the late Joseph Heckedon. They reside in the town of Waterloo. "

Snider.- Samuel S. Snider was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Oct. 9, 1821; died March 24, 1912; aged 90 y. 5 m. 14 d. He was married to Anna Snider March 5, 1844. Their home was blessed with 14 children, 3 of whom died in infancy, the mother dying April 23, 1890, aged 65 y. 9 m., whose death was mourned by a father and 11 children. On April 19, 1891, the father again married Elizabeth Reist, since which time family have had occasion to mourn the loss of 2 children, Titus, the fifth son dying Oct. 16, 1907, aged 47 y., and Cyrus, eldest son dying Aug. 17, 1909, aged 65 years.

The death of the father at this time leaving a widow, 4 sons, 5 daughters, 25 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren to mourn his departure. Funeral services were held at the Waterloo Mennonite Church, conducted by Bro. Noah Stauffer in English and Bro. Solomon Gehman in German. Interment in the David Eby Cemetery.

The Germany Company, originating in Pennsylvania, was initially comprised of 26 shareholders. These shareholders raised 10,000 pounds to purchase 60,000 acres of property which came to be known as Waterloo Township. The property was bought from Richard Beasley. He, along with two partners, had purchased a total of 94,012 acres from the Crown who held the land in trust for Chief Joseph Brant of the Mohawk or Five Nations Indians. This transaction took place in 1798.

Lot 22 of the German Company Tract originally comprised 448 acres stretching between boundaries now defined approximately by streets Erb and Glasgow. It was sold by David and Jacob Erb, agents of the German Company, to Abraham Gingrich in 1805. In 1815, David Gingrich, Abraham's son, sold the lot to John Binkley of Ancaster. Binkley, in turn, sold the entire 448 acres to Jacob C. Snider in 1842.

Jacob C Snider was a Mennonite. He was born in Pennsylvania in 1790 and worked as a yeoman. His wife, Elizabeth, was born in 1791. The house at 194 Forsyth Drive was built by Jacob C. Snider in 1845. This fact is recorded in the census records of 1861. The original house was a two-storey, typical Georgian frame with walls 15 - 16 inches thick. These walls were made of concrete and brick, and were covered by a clapboard exterior. The entire house, at that time, was comprised of the present day living room and centre hall.

In 1853, Jacob C. sold the property to his nephew, Samuel S., a farmer. In 1864, Samuel took out a mortgage for $6,000 from the Canada Permanent Building Society. The mortgage was discharged in 1863 according to the 1861 census. Samuel and his wife Anna had 8 children - Cyrus, Elizabeth, Catherine, Hiram, Samuel, Menno, Susanna and Titus. With a family of this size it is speculated that the money was used for very needy additions. These included four second floor bedrooms, a third floor attic, a dining room, and the present-day kitchen. The architectural design of the addition was Gothic rather than the original Georgian. This is evident in the pointed cathedral window, the centre peaked roof, and the decorative mouldings above the east and west entrances to the centre hall.

One of the interesting additions to the house involves a separate building of brick construction which may be entered from the living room of the main house. The date of this addition is unclear according to some reports. It was used as a laundry prior to 1936. In a recent interview with Mrs. Howard Snider, who moved into the house as a new bride in 1929,[Howard and Linda were married in 1919] this addition was referred to by her as the "milk house," for the farm was still operational in those years. Mrs. Snider's daughter recalls, "my sister was old enough then to do the selling [of milk] to the townspeople. We would bring the milk from the barn, and use the milk house as our dairy." It is quite possible, however, that this building had been constructed prior to 1851 as "the doddy house" of Jacob and Elizabeth, for the census records of that year described their home as a "one storey brick." It was a very common Mennonite practice in those days for parents to have an add-on building constructed to the home of a son or daughter. Housed in this room is an enormous Dutch oven which was used for cooking. It remains uncertain whether this was the original location, or whether it had been relocated from another area of the house. While the large metal doors used to close the oven have been removed to expose the hearth, the cranes for supporting huge cooking pots remain.

Of the 448 acre property, Samuel sold 117 acres to his son, Titus, in 1903 for $8,000. In 1908, the executors of Titus Snider sold the property to George H. Hahn for $10,550. Six years later, the land was returned to the Snider family, this time to Jacob S., a ninth child of Samuel S., born after the 1861 census. The cost was $17,550. For the same amount Jacob sold the land to his son Howard S. in 1929. Jacob and his family then moved to the farm house now designated as 131 William Street West [Waterloo]. Howard sold various parcels of his land off, including a sizeable portion to the Westmount Golf and Country Club, and 56 acres, a
at a cost of $16,782 to John Derby C. Forsyth.

The Forsyths, who purchased the property in 1936 never lived at 194 Forsyth Drive, the street which now bears his name. It was purchased as a guest house. Shortly after they acquired the property, the old barn was torn down and an elaborate new one was built. Pine beams from the old were salvaged and sawed into mellow panelling for the livingroom and master bedroom of the house. "He didn't want to leave the land empty," said Mrs. Forsyth, "so he put in grain and bought a herd of purebred Jersey cattle. He lost money every year."

In 1947, the house was sold to Dominion Life Assurance Company. They planned a housing development and put the house up for sale. While the tender of Dr. Archie Case was not the highest submitted, his plans for the house most appealed to the company, and the property became his the following year. In his renovations, three-quarters of the house was replastered, and the old fashioned closed stairway was opened onto the centre hall. Part of the livingroom was put up on jacks, and garages were constructed under it at basement level. Adverse to change of any sort in the refurbishing, Dr. Case contracted for copies of the rotting window sashes, interior trim; and clapboard for exterior repairs was specially milled.

In 1963, the house was sold to Mr. and Mrs. J. Askin. Subsequent owners to the Askins included Mr. and Mrs. D. D. Epp in 1978 - 1980, and a Ms. D. Crossan and a Mr. D. Zimmer, 1980 - 1982.

Much of the research for the history was done by Marg Rowell, Waterloo. This was printed with permission by Marion Roes from the framed history hanging in the hall of the 2008 owners.

House:
39 Doon Valley Drive is associated with three prominent citizens of Waterloo County. The first owner, the Honourable Adam Ferrie, was the founder of Doon Village. Samuel Snider, who purchased the property from Ferrie, owned the Blair Mill, as well as other mills that he and a partner operated in Bridgeport and Baden. Thomas Slee, one of the first trustees of the area, and the Doon Postmaster from 1867 to 1893, was the last significant owner of the property, purchasing it from Snider in 1878. In addition to its association with persons of historic significance, Doon Valley Drive (formerly Doon Village Road), was once an important linkage between the Village of Doon to Tow Town and Oregon (today Upper Doon).
39 Doon Valley Drive is unique in its use of building materials and the methods of construction. This one-and-a-half-storey house combined granite, limestone, fieldstone and lime mortar in its construction. It retains many original, intact features, such as the stone chimney with cove moulding, and the single door with a transom, on the north façade.<sup>1a

There will be a short service at the house at 12 o'clock; thence to Warner's [sic] Church, near Hespeler, for service at 3 p.m. Friends and acquaintances will please accept this intimation. The late Mrs Aaron Clemens, whose husband predeceased her, and who died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs (Dr.) Hilliard, was married in 1849, her name being Nancy Snider. Mr and Mrs Clemens resided at Fisher's Mills, near Hespeler, where the husband died in 1888. Shantz.-Magdalena Snyder Shantz, beloved wife of Joseph S. Shantz, was born Feb. 21, 1851; died Wednesday, June 3, 1931. She was in her 81st year. On April 9, 1884, she was married to Alfred Simpson, who preceded her in death June 1, 1886. On March 9, 1887, she was married to Joseph Shantz. She united with the Mennonite Church in her teen age and remained a faithful member until death. She is survived by a sorrowing husband, 2 sons, 1 daughter, 2 brothers and 2 sisters. The funeral was held on Saturday, June 6, and was conducted by Bro. Oscar Burkholder. Text, Psa. 91: 1 and 16.

Snyder.--John B. Snyder was born in Waterloo county, Ont., Aug. 1, 1848 died at his home in Kitchener, Ont., Mar. 20, 1922; aged 73 y. 7 m. 20 d. In 1877 he was married to Isabella Cassel to which union 4 daughters and 2 sons were born, one girl dying in infancy. After his first wife's decease he was married to Lucinda Cressman in 1900. To this union one son was born. He leaves his sorrowing widow, 3 sons, 3 daughters, 3 brothers, and 3 sisters, and many friends. Bro. Snyder has been a member of the Mennonite Church for many years, to which he remained faithful till the end. Snyder.--Levi Snyder was born July 25, 1852; died April 7, 1931; aged 78 y. 8 m. 13 d. On Sept. 17, 1884, he was married to Sarah Reist, who survives him. To this union were born 2 sons and 8 daughters, all of whom are living. He united with the Mennonite Church in his young manhood and was a faithful member to death. Funeral services were held at his home and at the Wanner Church, Hespeler, Ont., by Bros. Oscar Burkholder and C. F. Derstine. Theme: The Desired End and Haven.

CRESSMAN - Maria B. Snyder was born near Hespeler (now Cambridge), Ont., March 29, 1859; died at the home of her nephew A. J. Shantz, of Fisher's Mills, Ont., on Sunday, Sept. 9, 1934; aged 75 y. 5 m. 11 d. She was united with the Mennonite Church in early womanhood, and died in this faith. In 1908 she was united in marriage to Moses S. Cressman, Breslau, Ont., who preceded her in death in 1924. She leaves 1 sister (Mrs. Titus Bingeman) of New Dundee, Ont.; 2 brothers (Pre. A. B. Snyder of Hespeler (now Cambridge), Ont., and Abram Snyder of Waterloo, Ont.) and the family of her late husband: Dalton, Ivan, Aulton, Mrs. Oscar Gingrich, all of Waterloo, Ont., and Mrs. Addison Richert, Mannheim, Ont. The funeral was held on Sept. 12, from the home of her nephew, A. J. Shantz, and at the Cressman Mennonite Church, Breslau. Burial in the adjoining cemetery. Text, Rev. 2: 10. Ministers, S. M. HESPELER, March 11, Rev. A. B. Snyder, 74, one of the best known residents of this district and former pastor of Wanner Mennonite church, near here, died at his home at Fisher Mills today. The deceased, who was a life long resident of the district was ordained in 1893 and for 40 years, was the minister of the Wanner Mennonite church. He took a great interest in educational and missionary activities of the Mennonite church. He was the chairman of the Mennonite Bible School, at Kitchener, during the early years, following its organization. He also served on the Mennonite Mission Board of Ontario, for a number of years. He was married on May 17, 1892, to Mary Groff of Waterloo, who survives with the following children; Mrs, Nelson Bechtel of Hespeler. Oliver A. Snyder of Hesprler, Mrs. Chester Buschert of Preston, Mrs. Howard Cressman, Hespeler, Edward and Emma at home. The funeral will be held at 1: 30 p.m., Friday, from the residence, to the Wanner Mennonite church, for service at 2: 30, with Interment in the adjoining Cemetery. Bishop B. M. Kanagy, the pastor of the congregation and Rev. P. F. Coffman of Vineland, will oonduct the services.

Shantz was born in Wilmot Springs, Ontario, May 4, 1843. He was married to Mary Ann Shantz Nov. 28, 1869. (She died Feb. 13, 1924.) This union was blessed with 10 children. He died after a short illness of pneumonia on Mar. 1, 1927; Aged 83 y. 9 m. 24 d. He leaves 6 children, 3 sons and 3 daughters, 20 grandchildren, 2 brothers, 2 sisters, and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted March 5, by Orphen Wismer and Manasseh Hallman. Text, II Cor. 5: 1, 8. Interment in the Shantz Cemetery.

Axt. - Catharine, beloved wife of Andrew Axt, was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Nov. 6, 1844; died Oct. 8, 1942; aged 97 y. 11 m. 2 d. "Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in his season." She was married to Andrew Axt Dec. 25, 1873. This union was blessed with 6 children, 2 sons and 4 daughters. One daughter (Hannah) prede-ceased her Feb. 17, 1889, and another daughter (Lizzie, Mrs. Adam Doering) July 6, 1934. Her husband died July 7, 1923. She was the last surviving member of the Jonas Shantz family; her sister (Mrs. Rosenberger) having passed a-way only a few months ago, at the age of 96 years. She leaves 2 sons and 2 daughters: Ja-cob, of Petersburg; Elam, of Baden; Maggie (Mrs. Warren Bean) of New Dundee; and Lillie, at home. There also survive 19 grandchil-dren, 21 great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends. "She was a mother in Israel" and was wonderfully blessed with health all through her life until the last few years she began to fail. The last nine weeks of her life she spent mostly in bed, when life just seemed to ebb away. She was the oldest resident of Wilmot Township and in her passing one of the oldest landmarks has been removed. Funeral services were held Oct. 12 at the home and at the Shantz Mennonite Church, in charge of Bros. Orphen Wismer, Leslie Witmer, and Manassah Hallman. Interment in the adjoining cemetery.

Rosenberger. - Elizabeth, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jonas Shantz, was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., March 25, 1846; died May 30, 1942; aged 96 y. 2 m. 5 d. She was united in marriage in 1865, to Isaac Rosenberger, who preceded her in death in 1907. Surviving are 2 sons (Isaiah of Petersburg, Ont., and Emery at home), 3 daughters (Mrs. Hannah Shantz of New Dundee; Mrs. Norman Shantz of Haysville; Elsie Rosenberger, at home), 20 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great- grandchild, 1 sister (Mrs. Katherine Axt of Baden, who is 97 years of age). Two sons and 1 daughter predeceased her. She was the oldest resident in the community and enjoyed good health until about seven weeks before her death, attending church services when weather permitted. Seven weeks before her death she fell in her home and fractured a hip. She was taken to Galt Hospital, where she died. In her earlier days after her marriage she settled on a farm in Blanford Township. Eight years later they moved to another farm in Wilmot Township, and six years later to her last home, two miles southwest of New Dundee. She was lifelong member of the Mennonite Church, in which service she took a keen interest. Her life has been a source of inspiration to us. Even in later years she took an interest in home duties and served her Lord with joy. We miss her, but heaven needs her. The funeral was held June 2, with services at the home and church, in charge of Bros. Moses N. Baer, M. Hallman, and Jonas Snider. Text, II Cor. 5: 1. New Dundee, June 1 - The oldest resident in the district, Mrs. Elizabeth Rosenberger, 96, widow of Isaac Rosenberger, died at Galt Hospital Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Rosenberger enjoyed good health until seven weeks ago when she fell at her home and fractured a hip. She was born in Wilmot Township, a daughter of the late Mr. And Mrs. Jonas Shantz, and was married in 1865, settling on a farm in Blandford Township. In 1873 the couple moved to a farm three miles west of New Dundee where Mr. Rosenberger died in 1907. Six years later the family moved to the present home twp miles southwest of new Dundee. Mrs. Rosenberger took a keen interest in home duties and was an active member of Blenheim Mennonite Church until recently. Surviving are two sons, Rev. Isaiah Rosenberger of Petersburg, and Emery Rosenberger at home, and three daughters, Mrs. Hannah Shantz of New Dundee, Mrs. Norman Shantz of Haysville and Miss Elsie Rosenberger at home. Twenty grandchildren, 43 great- grandchildren and one great- great- grandchild and one sister, Mrs. Catherine Axt of Baden, who is 97 years old, also survive. The funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the residence toBlenheim Mennonite Church with Rev. Moses N. Bear in charge, assisted by Bishop Manassah Hallman of Petersburg. New Dundee's Oldest Resident Dies, Was 96

NEW DUNDEE.-The death occurred at the Galt Hospital on Saturday afternoon of Mrs. Isaac Rosenberger, the community's oldest resident, in her 97th year. The deceased who enjoyed a long and useful life, had been in good health until she suffered a fractured hip as the result of a fall at her home six weeks ago. Born on the Upper Street, north of Baden, on March 25, 1846, she was formerly Elizabeth Shantz, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jonas Shantz. In 1885 she was married to Isaac Rosenberger and they settled on a farm in Blandford township. In 1873 they moved to a farm three miles west of New Dundee where Mr. Rosenberger died in 1907. The late Mrs. Rosenberger moved to her present home two miles south- west of the village in 1913. She was the oldest member of the Blenheim Mennonite Church and always attended services when able. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Joshua Shantz of New Dundee, Mrs. Norman Shantz of Haysville and Elsie at home; and sons, Rev. Isaiah Rosenberger of Petersburg and Emery at home. Three children, Moses, Titus and Mary Ann predeceased her. There are also twenty grandchildren, forty- three great grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and one sister, Mrs. Andrew Axt of Baden. who is in her 98th year. The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon from her late residence at two o'clock to the Blenheim Mennonite Church with interment. in the adjoining cemetery. Rev Moses N. Baer, pastor of the church, officiated, asisted by Bishop Jonas Snider of Waterloo and Bishop Manassah Hallman of Petersburg.

Another aged and respected resident of Waterloo passed away on Friday, Sept. 22nd, in the person of Catherine Snider, widow of the late John Bingeman, in her 75th year. Four children survive, namely: Lydia Ann (Mrs. Noah Martin), Emma (Mrs. Alvin Scheifele), Hahnah, at home, all of Waterloo, and one son, Edwin, of Alberta.

The funeral, which took place on Tuesday from the residence, 9 Victoria street, was largely attended by friends and relatives. Service was held in the Waterloo Mennonite church and interment took place In the Eby cemetery.

Erb Street (David Eby) Mennonite Church

Early services which began around 1837 were held in private homes. Land at the corner of Erb Street and Hallman Road, where the present-day cemetery is located, was donated by David Eby Sr. on July 14, 1851; a red brick church known as David Eby's Church was built in the same year. The first minister in the new church was Jacob M. Oberholtzer who served from 1852 to 1874. He was followed by Elias Schneider (1874-1889), Jonas Snider (1892-1900), Newton Weber (1921-1923), and Noah Hunsberger (1923-1929).

Due to a difference of opinion in the David Eby congregation, Sunday School classes were held at first in a private home, that of Levi Groff, beginning in 1887. The dissension which resulted culminated in a division in the church in 1889; the minister, Elias Schneider, and the deacon, Menno S. Shantz, left the church and joined with the Old Order Mennonites of Woolwich Township. The following year, 1890, saw the commencement of "Edification Meetings", which were held in the homes of members of the David Eby congregation. These meetings later became the Young People's Bible Meetings.

By the beginning of the twentieth century, it was recognized that the church building was either in need of repair or in need of complete replacement. Consideration was given to building a new church on the same site or on a site on King Street North. A decision was made to accept from Samuel S. Snider the donation of a parcel of land which was also on Erb Street, but nearer town. Excavation of the foundation for the new church began in the Spring of 1902. A dedication service was held on August 17, 1902. A parsonage was built in 1929 on land donated by Herbert Snider, the son of Samuel Snider. The church building was renovated and enlarged in 1949-1950; a dedication service was held on April 9, 1950. Further renovations were made in 1974.

Samuel Snider, was born Sept. 30, 1852; died at his home in Waterloo, Ont., Oct. 15, 1940; aged 88 y. 15 d. He was married to Magdalene Brubacher who predeceased him June 4, 1938. Surviving are 3 sons (Edwin, Alvin, and Herbert), 1 daughter (Malinda, Mrs. Norman Stauffer), 1 brother (Jacob Snider), 2 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. He was a life-long resident of Waterloo, always interested in the welfare of the community. He was a member of the Mennonite Church. In his earlier years he took part in the activities of the Church and was a faithful worshiper all his life at the Erb St. Mennonite Church. Century-Old County Barn To Fall Before Wreckers


In the far dim past, long before the, dreams which were to become realities in the Westmount Golf and in Country Club and residential Westmount, the rolling acreage they now comprise was part of a 500-acre farm. The farm in extent embraced land which is now the property of the Dominion Tire Company.

From its fields were hauled annually tons and tons of hay and grain to be stored in the largest barn in Waterloo County.

That was a century ago or more. The barn, believed to be the oldest in the county, stands today, but it may not stand tomorrow. It is to be razed this week or next.

ON OLD SNIDER FARM

The structure stands on the old Snider farm at the extreme end of John street west, Waterloo, at the termination of John boulevard.

The 500-acre farm, as years passed, was divided. The original farm was reduced to 300-acres. Later another section became part of the Westmount Golf Club property.

Two years ago the last remaining 60 acres with the original buildings passed from the Snider hands. The farm was purchased by J. D. C. For- syth and is now the Forsyth Fornsac Ranch.

The barns, the original structure and additions made during the years, one at least half a century ago, are to be removed and a new barn erected.
In the new structure are to be used some of the materials of the time-honored structure at least the four main beams, each 45 feet long and 15 inches square.

The original barn. 50 by 80 feet may have been built 126 years ago. A straw shed 40 by 45 feet was added about 55 years ago. It is thought to have been the largest barn in the county for many decades although other large barns have been erected in the last 30 or 40 years.

WAS BORN ON FARM

Samuel S. Snider, 183 Erb street west, Waterloo, 85 years of age, is authority for the fact that the barn has stood for 85 years and more. His parents owned the farm and Mr. Snider was born on the farm. His father's name was also Samuel S. Snider. Mr. Snider believed the barn built before he was born, would be the oldest in the county and probably the largest until more recent years.

Incidentally the house on the farm is probably as old or nearly so. The home has likely been altered at times and recently has undergone complete renovation.

Just when the barn was erected and by whom could not be definitely learned. Mr. Snider believed it had been built by his grandfather. Jacob C. Snider (his mother's father.)

Genealogical records contain the following: that Samuel S. Snider (father of Samuel S. Snider, residing on Erb street, Waterloo, and now 85 years of age) was born in 1821, On March 5, 1844, he was married to Anna, daughter of Jacob C. and Elizabeth (Cressman) Snider. After his marriage, he moved on a farm adjoining the town of Waterloo where he was engaged in farming for a number of years.

AT LEAST 94 YEARS OLD

Since his father had not erected the barn, Mr. Snider believed it was there when his father went to live on the farm after his marriage in 1844.

This would make the age of the barn at least 94 years.

The farm itself is one of the oldest In the county. It has been operated for nearly 126 years since about 1812. Just at what date the barn was built however by Jacob C. Snider cannot be determined.

The records of Jacob C. Snider, grandfather of the present Mr. Samuel S. Snider, show that he was born in Franklin County, Penn., Feb. 19, 1791. In 1812, he was married to Elizabeth, daughter of John and Anna Cressman. "Soon after his marriage (in 1812) he moved on his farm a little to the west of the town of Waterloo."

"Not many years after his arrival in Waterloo county, he purchased the mill property belonging to the estate of Abraham Erb. Here he was engaged besides farming in the milling and saw milling and later erected a distillery."

The farm, originally owned by Jacob C. Snider and operated by him (while the war of 1812-14 was in progress), and then by his son- in-law, Samuel S. Snider Sr., passed into the hands of Samuel S. Snider's son, Titus Snider (brother of the present Samuel S. Snider).

It left Snider hands for a time when it was operated by George Hahn but came back into the family when it was purchased by Jacob Snider (also a brother of the present Samuel S. Snider), Howard Snider, a son of Jacob Snider, took over the farm probably ten years ago. selling it to Mr. Forsyth two years ago.

Diamond Bridegroom and Bride See Many Changes

Sixty years ago the land opposite the Benjamin Snyder homestead at Lexington was a farm where crops were planted, grew and were harvested season by season. Today the same land is the location of a bustling airport. Sixty years ago the Samuel Snyder homestead south of Waterloo was a also a farm, where also the land was tilled industriously. Today that area is a golf course dedicated to the pursuit of recreation. Thus both Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Snyder, R.R. 1, Lexington, who are observing their diamond wedding anniversary today have had particular opportunity to observe the changes that have occurred in their lifetime. For Mr. Snyder was born and has lived his life on the Benjamin Snyder homestead which once overlooked a pioneer farming countryside and now overlooks the outcome of modern science -an airport, and Mrs. Snyder was born on the Samuel Snyder [Snider] farm near Waterloo which in her lifetime has been converted from a pioneer homestead into a golf course. Mr. Snyder who is 83 years of age, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Snyder and he was born and still resides on the farm that was cleared by his grandfather. The farm house still used by Mr. and Mrs. Snyder is 83 years old, having been built the year Mr. Snyder was born. Before her marriage, Mrs. Snyder was Miss Susannah Snyder. She was born 80 years ago, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Snyder, whose farm was the land on which the Westmount golf course is now located. Mr. and Mrs. Snyder were married quietly in Kitchener, then Berlin, 60 years ago today. Immediately after their wedding they went to live at Lexington and have remained there since that time. Their family includes three children, Mr. Milton Snyder on the homestead, Mrs. D. Reichert, St. Catharines, and Mrs. Ferman Brubaker of Kitchener. Their only grandchild is Mr. Bob Brubaker. Both Mr. and Mrs. Snyder are members of the Evangelical church at Bridgeport. Owing to the fact that neither Mr. or Mrs. Snyder are in good health, the anniversary will be observed quietly.

A well-known and highly respected resident of Waterloo passed away at 9? o'clock this morning in the person of Titus Snider, son of Mr. Sam Snider at the age of 47 years, 9 months and 4 days. The late Mr. Snider had been ill since last winter. He was a sufferer from cancer of the liver and had been confined to his bed for the past ten weeks.

He was born on the old homestead in Waterloo which he subsequently purchased and had resided thereon continuously up to his death following the occupation of farmer. In 1899 he married Catherine Martin daughter of the late Jacob Martin who together with an adopted daughter are left to mourn his demise. The following brothers and sisters also survive - Cyrus, Waterloo; Menno, Elmira; Samuel and Jacob of near Waterloo; Hiram, Chicago; Mary and Emma, Berlin, Mrs. John Bingeman, Mrs. Abraham Rad, and Mrs. Jonathan Snyder, Waterloo.

The funeral will be held from his residence William Street West, Waterloo on Saturday afternoon at 1: 30 o'clock to the Mennonite church for service thence to Eby Cemetery for interment.

Snider.--Jacob S., son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Snider, was born July 5, 1861; passed away after a brief illness at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital, Dec. 1, 1947; aged 86 y. 4 m. 26 d. In 1887 he was married to Ida Stauffer. He was a member and regular attendant of the Erb Street Mennonite Church, Waterloo, Ont., and was a member of the Mennonite Aid Union, on whose executive committee he served for many years. Surviving are his widow, 4 sons (Howard, Vernon, and Clare, Waterloo, Ont.; and Willard, Hawthorne, Calif.), 3 daughters (Beulah--Mrs. Clayton Snider, Waterloo, Ont.; Irma--Mrs. Hiram Nissley, Mt. The death of Jacob S. Snider, 86, of 131 William St. West, Waterloo, occurred at the KW Hospital early today following a brief illness. A well known citizen in this district, Mr. Snider once farmed the land where the Westmount Golf Club is now located. He was a member of the Waterloo sewer commission for many years. The s/o the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel S. Snider, he was born at Waterloo July 5, 1861. He retired from farming in 1921. He was a member of the Erb. St. Mennonite Church, Waterloo. His marriage to the former Ida Stauffer, who survives, took place in Strasburg in 1887. The couple celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary in Sept. of this year. Surviving besides his wife, are four sons, Howard, Vernon and Clare, Waterloo; Willard, Hawthorn, Calif. ; three daughters, Mrs. Clayton(Beulah) Snider, Waterloo; Mrs. Melvin (Eileen) Martin, Floradale; and Mrs. H. G. (Irma) Nissley, Mt. Joy, Pennsylvania. 21 grandchildren and 8great-grandchildren.<sup>3a

Mary Snider 1863 - 1930

At the beginning of this century, there were few women with careers other than homemaking - even single women. Mary Snider was one of those few. As matron of an orphanage, her career was still related to homemaking, but as head of a public institution, she had contact with the "world" in a way that most women of her time did not.

Matron of the Orphanage

Mary Snider was born on January 13, 1863 to Samuel S. and Anna (Snider) Snider on a farm adjoining Waterloo. In 1896 Rev. and Mrs. Stoltz of the United Brethren Church initiated the establishment of an orphanage in the town of Berlin (now Kitchener). By the time of the official opening on December 19, 1896, Mary Snider had been appointed matron at a salary of eight dollars per month. She had two assistants who received six dollars per month. The orphanage was located at the corner of King and Wilmot (now Victoria) Streets, with fifteen children in residence. In the early days of the orphanage, the monthly budget was 30 dollars, with Dr. Honsberger giving free medical services and Mr. Thomas free shoe repairs. Bell Telephone installed the telephone in 1904. The company gave an annual donation of $12.50, thus cutting costs in half. By May of 1901, one hundred children had been given shelter at one time or another. Mary Snider had obviously found her niche in this busy household of children who suffered the loss of parents. One morning in 1904 Mary found a basket on the front steps. Investigating its contents, she found a newborn baby boy. Mary's mother heart was touched as she nursed him through the first critical stage of infancy. She would later tell him that when he cried (which he did a great deal) she would take him to her own room. Thus a bond was formed and she eventually legally adopted him. She named him James Edward, but he was known as Edward. Whether she ran into any legal obstacles, we probably will never know. One also wonders what encouragement, if any, she, as a single woman, received from friends and colleagues. Under Mary's care, Edward received a good education and grew up to be a handsome, capable young man. Mary bought a car in the early 1920s, but Edward was the driver. At this time Mary Snider was a member of the Berlin Mennonite Church (now First Mennonite of Kitchener). She was evidently a very active member, for Eli Hallman, a minister and evangelist in the Mennonite Church would later recall, that Mary and others "...insisted that I become a member of the Mennonite church and assist them as Young People." In the 1920s this congregation found itself pressured by Conference to discipline the women who were wearing hats instead of the bonnet which was being prescribed for the women of the church. Women in the city had generally been accustomed to wearing hats to their places of work and did not look upon this "legislation" very favourably. Mary Snider, in her position and employment, would have been very much affected by this turn of events. A large group, among them one of the ministers, Urias K. Weber, sympathized with the women rather than with the Conference. When the women came under church discipline, this group withdrew and organized an independent congregation - Stirling Avenue Mennonite church. Mary was somewhat vocal during this dispute. At one point she complained that an unfair distinction was being made between men and women in legislating dress regulations.

Ladies' Aid to Women's Missionary Society

No doubt the orphanage and its needs for services was one of the factors which led to the establishment of the Ladies' Aid (first called Sisters' Aid) at the Berlin Mennonite Church. Although the orphanage was a community effort, the Mennonites were always involved on the board as well as providing assistance. Mary Snider had been involved in the organization of the Sisters' Aid in 1908, acting as secretary of the organizational meeting. At that meeting, she was elected assistant secretary-treasurer. It was customary for the Ladies' Aid to have their annual meeting at the orphanage. In 1924 the women met there as usual. They took supper along for themselves, the staff, and the children, with additional donations of eggs, canned fruits and pickles. The president was Mrs. M. C. Cressman, but Mary Snider, the 3^rd vice-president, served as chairlady of the meeting. The women from the two congregations continued to meet together, but because of pressure from the leadership, they finally organized into separate groups. The Stirling women met at the home of Mrs. M. B. Shantz on March 25, 1925 and organized the Women's Missionary Society of the Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church. Miss Mary Snider was elected president of the executive committee. A representative of the Stirling WMS then attended the annual meeting of the Ladies' Aid on March 31 at the orphanage to make a presentation to the president, Mrs. M. C. Cressman, giving their formal "good-byes" to their former colleagues. The separation freed the Stirling women to take on projects which other Mennonites were still hesitant to support. Some of them became strong supporters of and active in the Women's Christian Temperance Union. They continued to support the Leprosy Mission and the Victorian Order of Nurses and to provide canned goods for the orphanage and the Freeport Sanitarium. Mary was an energetic, capable woman, aware of the needs of her own city, and interested in the world beyond. The suggestions for new projects frequently came from her. One of her suggestions was a cradle roll department in the Sunday school. In 1927 the WMS appointed Mary Snider as the first superintendent. When the time came to replace her, the women discovered that the Cradle Roll was not considered a congregational effort; so the WMS continued to made the appointments. Mary resigned from her position at the orphanage about 1927 and bought a house on Fairview Avenue, not far from the Stirling Avenue church. In 1928 Edward was elected Sunday school superintendent, and in the summer of 1929 he married Kathleen Brubacher. There was little preparation for the tragedy which awaited this family group. In February of 1930 Edward suffered a ruptured appendix. Peritonitis set in, and he died on February 23. Broken hearted, Mary died the day of Edward's funeral. The people of Stirling were stunned by the loss of these two people. "Like a comet Mary brightened the lives of many in our church and in our community," was how Anne Millar, many years later, summed up Mary's life and contribution.

McNally.-Emma Snider, a daughter of Anna and Samuel Snider, was born Nov. 25, 1865, at the old homestead in Waterloo. She was converted to God through Jesus Christ on Jan. 17, 1891, under the influence of J. S. Coffman, and baptized and united with the Mennonite Church the following spring, with which Church she was a true and loyal servant to death. On Mar. 6, 1917, she was married to Isaac McNally with whom she lived a happy and peaceful life. Some two weeks ago she was taken seriously ill. An operation was performed and all possible medical skill exerted to prolong her life. However after the operation she gradually failed and five days later died at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital Aug. 30. She is survived by a sorrowing husband, four sisters and three brothers. Funeral services were held from the family residence, Waterloo, on Saturday, Sept 3, Brethren Newton Weber, Jonas Snider and Oscar Burkholder having charge of services.

Demise of Mrs. Thomas - a long-time resident of Ayr in the person of Mrs. Samuel J. Thomas passed away Sunday night or early Monday morning. She had been ailing from heart trouble for some time, but was feeling better Sunday night. In the morning it was found that the vital spark had fled its tenement of clay during the still hours of the night. Mrs. Thomas, whose maiden name was Eliza Snyder, was in her 66th year. She was born in Blenheim, near Plattsville, and had spent practically all her life in this vicinity. She married in 1871 and was predeceased by her husband some six years. A son, Geo. H. Thomas of Detroit, survives. The deceased also has two brothers and three sisters residing in Manitoba. Mrs. Thomas was a Methodist and an active member of the local church, taking a prominent part in everything pertaining to the welfare of that body. The funeral took place yesterday from her late residence, St. Andrews Ave., the services being conducted by Rev. Mr. Hiscock ? the pallbearers were Messrs. C? George, John Anderson, A. Anderson, C. R. Morton, Thos. Fairgrieve and R. S. Armstrong.

NANCY C. STEWART

MAGRATH Nov. 8 Special - Funeral services fo. Nancy Clemens Stewart, mother of Clarence Earl Stewart, who passed away at the home of her son, November 3. aged 84 years, were held from the United Church November 4. Rev J. A Claxton officinting.

Pallbearers were G. V Balder son. Mr. Gunning J. Spring. Mr. Robison, Harry James Mr Madieton.

Interment was made in Magrath cemetery

Nancy Clemens Stewart was born n 1848. near Chatham Ontario. where she spent her girlhood days.

She married Otis Stewart who had been previously married and had six children, two sons who predeceased her and four daughters the latter all being married and at present in Ontario

One child only blessed the marriage. a son. Clarence Earl, with whom she had lived since his mar- riage. Her husband predeceased her twenty-nine years ago in Ontario.

She was a life member of the W.CTU. also a member of the United Church.

In July, 1932, the family moved to Magrath. Shortly afterwards grandma's health began to fail and she was bedfast for several weeks prior to her demise.

Besides her son and his wife she leaves four grandsons. Frank. Donald, Albert and Allen Stewart.

Snider. --- Lydia Jane, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Moses Clemens was born Jan. 22, 1860; died May 5, 1950; aged 90 y. 3 m. 13 d. Her death, which followed a lingering illness which she bore very patiently, occurred at the home of her daughter (Mrs. Weston Bowman), near Kitchener, Ont., where she had made her home the last years. On March 9, 1879, she was married to Joshua Snider, of Elmira, Ont., who predeceased her. Surviving are 11 children (Emmanuel, Blackie, Alta.; Abraham, Guernsey, Sask.; Clayton, West Montrose, Ont.; Clemens, Guernsey, Sask.; Cyrenius, Kitchener, Ont.; Emma-Mrs. Edwin Snider, Waterloo, Ont.; Lydia Ann-Mrs. Ira Gingrich, Guernsey, Sask.; Elizabeth-Mrs. Weston Bowman, Centreville, Ont.; Mary-Mrs. Clarence Burkhardt, Guernsey, Sask.; Minerva, Stratford, Ont.; Angeline-Mrs. William Sommers, West Montrose, Ont.). She united with the Mennonite Church in her youth and remained a faithful member until death. She was a kind and loving mother. Most of her life was spent on a farm near West Montrose, Ont. Funeral services were held May 7 at the Elmira Mennonite Church. Burial was made in the adjoining cemetery. Oliver D. Snider and Howard S. Bauman officiated.

MRS. LYDIA JANE SNIDER

Mrs. Lydia Jane Snider, 90, died Friday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Weston Bowman, Centreville.

She was the widow of Joshua Snider, who died 24 years ago. She was the last surviving member of the family of Mr. and Mrs. Moses Clements, Bleinheim.

Mrs. Snider was born near Hespeler and lived in West Montrose before moving to Centreville.

She is survived by five sons and six daughters; Emmanuel, Blackie, Sask.; Clemens and Abraham, Guernsey, Sask.; Clayton, West Montrose; Cyrenous, Kitchener; Mrs. Edwin Snider, Lexington; Mrs. Ira Gingrich, Mrs. Clarence Burkhardt, Guernsey, Sask.: Mrs. Elizabeth Bowman, Centreville; Miss Minerva Snider, Stratford: Mrs. William Somer, West Montrose. One son predeceased her.

Funeral was held Sunday, 2:30 p.m., DST. at the Elmira Mennonite Church, with burial in the Elmira Mennonite Cemetery. Rev. O. D. Snider officiated.

Fire completely destroyed David Clemens' flourmill at Winterbourne last night. It is feared that loss of life resulted. Just at dusk on Tuesday evening a man with the earmarks of a tramp was seen near the mill. One of the surmises as to the origin of the fire is, that the tramp slept in the mill and, probably by the lighting of a pipe, set fire to the structure. An eye witness brings the report to town that shouts and screams were heard in the burning building, the cries gradually becoming fainter until all was still. The origin of the fire will probably always be a mystery. Others say that the fire had its origin in the engine room. The loss is fully $15,000 on building, machinery and stock. The building was a frame one and the flames were not long in devouring it. Amount of insurance not known.

MRS. ALFRED ELLIS

HESPELER, June 8. A well-known resident of Waterloo Township for many years, Mrs. Alfred Ellis, passed away at her home this morning, at the age of 81 years. She had been ill for only one week. Born in Plattsville, Mrs. Ellis came to the Hespeler district as a child with her parents, when her father purchased the mill at Fisher Mills. The family resided there for a number of years and then moved to, Kitchener. Following her marriage. Feb. 8, 1893, she and her husband took up residence at their present abode. Mrs. Ellis' maiden name, was Mary Jane Clemens. Surviving are her husband: 3 daughters, Misses Lourena and Ella Ellis of Kitchener and Mrs. A. Gingrich, Hespeler and one son, Reeve Carl Ellis of Waterloo Township and two grandchildren.

Miss Margaret Clemens

A resident of Waterloo for 50 years, Miss Margaret Clemens, 92. of 69 Bridgeport Rd., died today at the K-W Hospital. She had been in poor health for several months.

Born March 8, 1866, in the Hespeler area, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Clemens.

She was a member of the First United Church, Waterloo.

The last surviving member of her family, she is survived by a brother-in-law, Dr. W. L. Hilliard, at whose home she resided.

The body is at the Edward R. Good Funeral Home, Waterloo, where the funeral will be conducted Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Rev. R. D. Horsburgh of First United Church will officiate, Burial will be in Waterloo Mount Hope Cemetery.

FORMER POINT GREY ASSESSOR IS DEAD
Clemens Had Long Civic Service Here.

John Clemens, 6592 East Boule- vard, retired member of the civic assessment commission, and former assessor of Point Grey, died on Saturday. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in Mount Pleasant Funeral Chapel, with Rev. E. D. Braden officiating. Interment will be in the Masonic Cemetery, Burnaby. Mr. Clemens was born in Waterloo County, Ont., in 1869, and went to Birtle, Man., as a young man. He was active in town politics, and served as mayor from 1904 to 1907. He came to Vancouver in 1909, and in 1910 became first permanent assessor of Point Grey municipality. He held this position under every Point Grey reeve, and after amalgamation in 1929 he joined the city's assessment commission. He retired on April 1 1935.

Nathaniel Clemens, Sept 9 - Nathaniel Clemens, former resident of the Hespeler and Preston district, died at his home, 161 Admiral Road, Toronto, about 10: 30 last evening. He was 83 years old. Deceased, son, of Mr. And Mrs. John Clemens, was born on July 5, 1859, at Fisher Mills, near Hespeler. As a young man he assisted his father in the operation of a flourmill at Fisher Mills, and later operated a farm on the Fishers Mills road. Retiring 20 years ago, Mr. Clemens lived in Preston for some eight years. He had resided in Toronto for the past 10 years. Deceased was a former member of the Methodist, now United Church in Hespeler and was associated with the United Church in Preston for many years. During his residence in Toronto he was a member of the Dovercourt United Church. His wife, Julie Ann Henry, predeceased him 16 years ago. Surviving is a daughter, Pearl, of Toronto, a son, Orval, Hespeler, and a daughter, Mrs. Charles Talbot, Preston; three brothers, Aaron, Fisher Mills, Levi, Plymouth, Michigan, and Mervyn of Wyandotte, Mich; three sisters, Mrs. I. W. Eaton, Hespeler, Mrs. Austin and Mrs. Roy Newman in Western Canada, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Remains are resting at the H. k. Stager Funeral Home, Preston, from where the funeral will be held on Friday at 2: 30. Interment will be in the Preston Cemetery.

DEATH OF MR. I. CLEMENS

Well-known Waterloo County Farmer Passes Away at Galt General Hospital.

Guelph Herald. The emblem of mourning on the big doors of Clemens' planing mills to-day announced a death among the Clemens brothers. At the Galt General Hospital at ten o'clock Thursday night there passed away one of the best known and most highly respected farmers of Waterloo County in the person Mr. Isaiah Clemens, brother of Mr. J. A. Clemens, of this city and son of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Clemens, of Fisher's Mills near Hespeler.

The deceased was taken ill last Saturday and underwent an operation for appendicitis, but the disease was too far advanced for medical skill to cope with it. The end came last night, just one day after his 45th birthday.

Mr. Isaiah Clemens was born on the Clemens homestead, at Fisher's Mills, near Hespeler, and the adjoining farm on the one on which he has since resided, in the year 1862, and for many years past has, together with his three brothers, been engaged in farming in that section. Their homes are all near the old homestead, and close by resides their aged father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. John Clemens. The three brothers referred to are Abraham S., Nathaniel and Aaron, and besides these are three other brothers:, Mr. H. A. Clemens, proprietor of the electric planing mills, Guelph, Levi, of Detroit; and Mr. E. of Powassan. There are also four sisters - Mrs. J. H. Ellis, Clifñord; Mrs. I. W. Eaton, Hespeler; Mrs. (Rev.) Jas. Austen, of Gladys, who had to be summoned home from honey-moon trip to the funeral.

Of his own family, Mr. Clemens, leaves a widow and eight children, most of them of tender yeart.[sic]

Deceased was a consistent member of the Methodist Church, and was highly respected by a host of of quaintances, all of whom will join with the sorrowing members of the fatnily in mourning the untimely demise of one dearly beloved by relatives and friends.

The funeral took place to-day at 3 o'clock.

HESPELER\emdash Mrs. Isaac Weslcy Eaton, 92, of 51 Rife, Ave., Hespeler, died today at the home of her daughtcr, Mr. Harold Presant, RR 1, Brampton. Born, March 28, 1865, in Fisher Mills, she was the former Nancy Clemens, a daughter of the late, John S. Clemens and his wife the former Rebekah Snyder. She was a member of Hespeler United Church, an associate member of the Women's Missionary Society and of the Woman's Auxiliary. Surviving are her husband: a daughter, Mrs Harold Presant; a brother, Mervyn of Wyandotte, Mich., a sister, Mrs. Melinda Austin of Clear Lake, Wis. There also are four grandehildren, four greal-grandchildren. The body will be at Stager Funeral Home, Hespeler, from Saturday noon, until funeral services, Monday, at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Wanner Cemetery.

Mrs. Leroy Newman

HESPELER, Dec. 2 - Word has been received of the death of Mrs. Leroy Newman at her home, Blackie, Alta., Nov. 22. The late Mrs. Newman was formerly Mrs. Minnie Clemens of Fisher's Mills, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Clemens. Deceased had been in failing health for several months, and had just recently returned to her home after spending several weeks with relatives and friends in Hespeler and district. She is survived by her husband.

PRESTON - Emeline Baer, 90, widow of David Bricker and well-known Preston resident for 39 years, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Stanley H. Ohlman, Villa Park, Ill., yesterday. She had been ailing for a short time. Coming to Preston in 1900 Mrs. Bricker resided here until the death of her husband, David Bricker, on Feb. 6, 1939, after which she made her home with her daughter in Illinois. When resident in Preston she was a member of St. Paul's United Church. Rev. H. J. Herlihey will officiate at the funeral service. The body will arrive at the Stager-Pass Ltd., funeral home tomorrow morning with service in the funeral home chapel on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment will be in the Preston Cemetery.

Oberholtzer - On the 6th of February, in Waterloo Twp., Ontario, of pulmonary tuberculosis, Laura Hamah, beloved wife of Josiah Oberholtzer, aged 26 years, 6 months and 23 days. Deceased had been ailing for some time and was still growing weaker till at last she agreed to consult a physician who told her that her case was hopeless and her time at the longest no more than three weeks, which also proved true. When she saw death staring in her face and no hope for the future, it caused her a very deep conviction, and she became seriously concerned about her soul's salvation, and soon sent for a minister to help her on the right way to get salvation, and requested ministers and Christians to come and encourage her in her great distress. She repented and prayed and asked others to pray with her and for her. She was not ashamed to pray in the presence of strangers, but called unto God for pardon and salvation. She often said in presence of the writer, "I believe all you say, I believe in all the promises of the Bible, and in all the encouragements you give me, yet I am not saved." I sometimes asked her, "Is there anything keeping or holding you?" The answer was every time, "Nothing but my sins." In this state she bad been for seven days. Then she confessed a great evil which she had committed. By this time she was very weak in body and at times somewhat weak in her mind, still had her mind continually fixed on her Savior, and every time I came to see her she seemed to be so glad and talked, and even if voice had failed she whispered and told all about her welfare. On the 8th day of her distress I visited her again, then she looked cheerful and bright and said, "Now I have peace, now I am saved, I feel easy and my burden has left me. Thank the Lord." Upon asking her what had happened she said that she bad confessed her sin to God and her husband and received forgiveness as soon as she asked it. She said "I could rest and sleep all night, and now I am willing to do all that God requires of me. I want to be baptized and unite with the church which has been my choice for some time. Bish. Jonas Snider was called the next day, and administered water baptism and received her as a member in our church. Then we held communion, but on account of her being very weak we did not mention feet-washing, but when we were about to close the meeting, she whispered to me, "I would also like to observe feet washing." We said, "That shall be granted you, only we thought you were too weak and tired?" "O no! I am strong enough to do that yet." Then she said, "Now I am ready to die, still I am willing to live and suffer as long as the Lord sees fit to leave me here." On the 3d of February she was received in the church militant, and on the 6th, God saw fit to take her into the church triumphant. She leaves a sorrowing husband and two little daughters, parents, and many other friends to mourn their lose, yet she left a bright evidence that she was going where Jesus is, there to live in glory forever. Only a few days in peace with God. O! how sad if she had not received salvation until it had been forever too late. This should be a solemn warning to all who are still outside of the ark of safety. Our departed sister said that she often was convinced of her sad condition, and often felt the necessity of being a Christian, and forsaking the fashions and follies of this world and living in the simplicity enjoined in the Sacred Word. She was fully consecrated to the Lord's will and had done away with all of self, and was entirely willing to live a life separate from the world. O! sinner, yield to God's calling while you are yet strong in body and mind, and serve the Lord with a full purpose of heart, and do not put it off until your dying hour; you might be cut off instantly, and not have the privilege this young sister bad to become converted on your bed of affliction, but might be lost forever. Sister Oberholtzer was buried on the 8th of February at Hagey's M. H. near Preston, where a large concourse of friends and neighbors were gathered. Services by J. B. Gingrich from Hebrews 4: 16

PRESTON, Jan. 4., Mrs. Mabel Shiry, 67, wife of James Hilborn, 788 Laurel St., Preston, died in St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, yesterday. Born in Waterloo Township, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Noah Shiry, Mrs. Hilborn resided all her life in the district and in Preston, for the past 15 years. She was a member of St. Paul's United Church. She was married to James Hilborn in 1906. Surviving are her husband; eight sons, Arthur, St. George; Harold, Paris; Oscar, Galt; Russell, Hespeler; Roy, Linwood; Clifford, Wilbur and Kenneth, Preston; two daughters, Elizabeth, at home; and Mrs. William (Alma) Ledgerwood, Preston; one sister, Mrs. Alma Cochrane, Kitchener. The body is resting at the Stager-Pass Funeral Home, where the funeral will be held on Saturday, at 2: 30 p.m. Interment, will be in the Preston Cemetery.

At Fairview Mennonite Home, 799 Concession Rd., Cambridge, on Monday evening, March 14, 1988, A. Junia Shantz, in his 97th year. Beloved husband of the late, Clara (Bechtel) Shantz (1984). The late Mr. Shantz, was predeceased by two brothers, Edwin and Hermice and is survived by a sister-in-law, Mrs. Evelyn Shantz of St. George and a family friend, Helen Shantz of Waterloo. Mr. Shantz, was born in Waterloo township, the son of the late Joseph and Mattie (Snyder) Shantz and was an active life-long member of the Wanner Mennonite Church. He was a pioneer in the formula feed business and operated the Fisher Mill Feed Store, in the Cambridge (Hespeler) area, for many years. He was a past president of the South Waterloo Agricultural Society. The family will receive friends at the Nelson Funeral Home, 1766 Franklin Blvd., Cambridge, on Wednesday afternoon and evening, from 2: 30-4: 30 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Thursday afternoon, March 17, at 2: 30 p.m., in the Wanner Mennonite Church, with Rev. Paul Martin officiating. Interment Wanner cemetery.

Flash from the Past: Busy feed mill was at Fisher Mills

For much of the 20th century the story of the Hespeler-area hamlet of Fisher Mills ran parallel to the story of its mill and the mill's longtime owner, A.J. Shantz.

Last week's "mystery" photo showing Hespeler Feed & Farm Supplies in the 1960s inspired dozens of calls and emails from readers with ties to the hamlet, named for Jacob Fisher, a Chilligo Creek mill operator in the early 1800s. Fisher Mills was also the birthplace in 1841 of Waterloo distiller Joseph Seagram. His parents owned a hotel there.

The old mill, just east of Beaverdale Road and two kilometres from the heart of Hespeler (now Cambridge), was a place of business until 1990. It's now a home, backing on Maple Grove Road.

In 1932, when he was 40, Ammon Junia (A.J.) Shantz became owner of the feed mill his father Joseph Shantz began there in 1890. Powered by water from a man-made pond, the Shantz mill was built on the foundation of an earlier flour mill that in 1888 was dismantled and moved to Birtle, Man. One of A.J. Shantz's first steps as owner was to add a diesel engine.

Shantz grew up working at the mill but also trained at the Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph in the 1920s. He lived with his parents on a farm that is partly visible on the far left in the photo.

Shantz is remembered as an honest, kind and astute man who kept pace with changing business realities. A Shur-Gain franchisee, producing livestock feeds was his key focus. But his mill also did seed cleaning, grain chopping and saw milling. It made apple cider, fruit juice, molasses and apple butter (the latter venture was directed by his mother, Mattie), plus its own brand of dog food, promoted by a litter of 16 Irish setters, Shantz acquired.

A description in the 1957 volume of the Waterloo Historical Society noted: "Mr. Shantz also deals in fertilizers, fencing, twine and many other lines of farm supplies. An electrical appliance shop stocking deep freezers, TV sets etc. has recently been added to his establishment."

For 22 years Shantz also owned the Speed Mill north of Hespeler. It was both a flour and feed mill.

Lois Anne Snyder of Waterloo recognized the Shantz Mill photo. She grew up in Fisher Mills and her grandfather and father, both named Alf Tuletzki, worked for Shantz, as did her sister Betty, who had a job in the mill office.

"We used to go down there sometimes with my dad in the mornings," Snyder recalled. One of the first things her father would do was go to the basement and start an engine that would get all sorts of belts and pulleys moving throughout the building.

Don Baker of Kitchener phoned to say his father, Art, bought farm supplies at the mill and worked there in the 1960s and 1970s. He is certain the car in the photo is his father's 1962 Mercury.

Bill Bartels of Kitchener has a special reason to recall A.J. Shantz. In 1924, his grandfather Jacob J. Bartels, arrived in Waterloo with his wife and four children, along with other Russian Mennonites who had fled persecution in their homeland. When they stepped from the train, a man shouted "family of six" and A.J. Shantz stepped up to say he could offer them temporary housing.

The Bartels family lived briefly at the Shantz farm. Jacob later acquired a Niagara-area fruit farm that he ran with Bartel's father, Jacob Jr., who raised his own family in Hespeler.

Bartels said he can recall going to Shantz's mill as a boy with his father in the 1940s with apples and tomatoes from the Niagara farm.

"I was pretty impressed with the idea that you could squeeze a tomato and get juice that you would put in a can."

When Shantz retired in 1970, he sold the mill to Howard Cressman, who had grown up in Shantz's home, where his mother was the housekeeper. Cressman incorporated as Chilligo Farm Supply, Ltd. and for a time had Bill Miller as a co-owner.

They made many innovations, but manufacturing was gradually discontinued. The mill became a retail site called The Feed Store.

Ron Hattle of Elora phoned to say his father, Charles, worked for Cressman in the 1970s and in retirement wrote about the mill.

From his journal: "The staff at the time was Howard Cressman, Stewart McDonald, Alf Tuletzki, Art Baker, Karol Warenholtz and Charlie Hattle. Shortly after when things got going with the pellets, they hired Guy Hawshaw. Alf's daughter was the bookkeeper."

Shantz was a very visible figure in Fisher Mills and at the nearby Wanner Mennonite Church. In the late 1930s he and his farmhand, Wilfred Becker, took two Percheron horses to Toronto and won a prize at the Royal Winter Fair.

One curious aspect of Shantz's life is that he and his wife, Clara, wed in 1918, lived apart for years, she in Kitchener and he at Fisher Mills. Their only child had passed away in 1921 while still a tot.

Miriam Cressman of Cambridge knew the couple well as the wife of Howard Cressman, who died in 2004. Clara and A.J. were fond of each other, she said, but as young people were pressured by their strong-willed mothers. Clara's mother insisted her daughter live with her in Kitchener. But A.J. found it hard to run the mill from so far away. As well, his own mother wanted him at Fisher Mills.

In later life the couple did live together again at Fisher Mills. Clara died in 1984, A.J. in 1988.
