    SHANTZ, Lorne R. - On Friday, Jan. 1, 1982 at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital, Lorne Raeburn Shantz, age 76 years, of 30 Farmbrook Place, Kitchener.

    Beloved husband of the former Lorraine Schneider; dear father of Marlene Brooke of Los Angeles, Calif., Lorne Ray of RR 2, Petersburg, Charles and Fred, both of Kitchener; grandfather of Dawn Bronte, Lorne, Jeffrey, Kevin and Tracey Shantz. Predeceased by three brothers,Abiah, Areeli, Abner.

    He was born in Plattsville on March 16, 1905 a son of the late Jacob M. Shantz; and the former Mary Ann Bingeman, and had been a resident of Kitchener since 1925. He was Advertising and Public Relations Manager for J. M. Schneider Inc. at the time of his retirement in 1970.

    He was elected to the Kitchener Public School Board in 1946, was Chairman of Physical Health and Safety Committee in 1947, Board Chairman from 1948 to 1949 and again in 1953. He originated Church and School Week in 1947, promoted the observance of Church and School Week throughout Ontario and later throughout Canada. He was president of the Ontario Association of Public School Trustees for two years and a director of the Ontario Urban and Rural Trustees Association. In 1959 he was elected to the Waterloo County Board of Education and was a member of the Building and Sites Committee from 1969 to 1981. He had a total of 36 years continuous service with the school board and his guiding principle in every decision he made was "Will the child benefit".

    He was a member of the K-W Kiwanis Club since 1954 with 15 years of perfect attendance; a member of the Retired Business and Professional Men's Club for 10 years and a former moderator of the Senior Citizens Program on Grand River Cable TV for four years. He was also a member of Grand River Lodge 151, AF & AM.

    Friends may call at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, after 7 p.m. this evening, until noon on Monday, then at Bethany Missionary Church, for the funeral service on Monday at 2 p.m. Interment Woodland Cemetery. Rev. John Hamilton and Rev. Clarence Hunking will conduct the service

    VETERAN TRUSTEE LORNE SHANTZ DIES AT 76

    Lorne Shantz, a Waterloo County Board of Education trustee for Kitchener for 36 years died Friday. Shantz of 30 Farmbrook Pl. was 76. He was the originator of the Church and School Week in 1947 and promoted it throughout the Province. It was a program in which teachers and visiting clergy helped recruit students for church and Sunday school.

    Elected to the Kitchener Public School Board in 1946, he served as Chairman in 1948-49 and in 1953. He was president of the Ontario Association of Public School Trustees for a two year period and served as director of the Ontario Urban and Rural Trustees Association. In 1969, he was elected as Waterloo County Public School Board Trustee and was a member of the Board's Building and Sites Committee from 1969 to 1981.

    During election campaigns in 1978 as a school trustee he said the Bible should be the first book in the school system and opposed bilingualism in the public schools. He worked for J. M. Schneider Inc. for 41 years, until he retired in 1970 as Advertising and Public Relations Manager. He was a member of the K-W Kiwanis Club since 1954, a member of the K-W Sales and Ad Club and the Retired Business and Professional Men's Club.

    During his retirement he hosted a cable television program for senior citizens. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine, a daughter and three sons. The funeral is to be held Monday

    SHANTZ, Cameron Gillis - Passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, on Sunday, August 28, 2005, at Freeport Health Centre of Grand River Hospital, Kitchener. Cam resided in New Hamburg and was formerly of Plattsville. He was born 83 years ago on June 14, 1922 in Plattsville, a son of the late Abiah Bingeman Shantz and the former Myra Della Cressman. Cam was a member of Plattsville United Church and was active in the Plattsville Community. He had been the village Postmaster for 27 years and prior to that was employed as a Tinsmith with Harmer Bros. Cam had served with the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 532, New Hamburg. He had been the Past President of both the Canadian and Ontario Percheron Associations. He was a master breeder, showman and judge of Percheron horses. Cam was a talented artist enjoying both drawing and copper tooling. Survived by his wife Marjorie (Brown) Shantz who he married August 18, 1943. Loving father of Judith and Bob Kobe of Bracebridge and Jane and Ross Eichler of New Hamburg. Lovingly remembered by grandchildren Jill and Peter McNair, Todd and Erin Kobe, Tracy and Jeff McClenaghan and Amy and Gary Becker. Sadly missed by six great-grandchildren Cameron and Lauren McNair, Austin McClenaghan and Hunter, Rochelle and Hawkins Becker. Also remembered by sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Wilma Shantz of London, Purvis Rowe of Ottawa, Jean Brown, Doug and Stella Brown, all of Plattsville, Jack Brown, Helen Brown, both of Norwich and Ken Koebel of Consecon, as well as a number of nieces and nephews. Cam was predeceased by brothers Harry and Nile, by sister Jewel, by sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Dorothy Shantz, Althea Shantz, Pearson Eby, Stewart Ivel, Bill Brown and Phyllis Koebel. Friends and relatives may call at the Mark Jutzi Funeral Home, 291 Huron St., New Hamburg tonight (Tuesday) from 7: 30-9 p.m. and again Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, September 1, 2005 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Scott Woolhead officiating.     Jewel Eby of Fairview Mennonite, Cambridge, Jewel died on Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, after a battle with cancer. Jewel was predeceased by her first husband, Stewart Ivel in 1971, second husband Pearson Eby in 1992, son Eric Ivel in 1996, brothers Harry and Nile Shantz; sister-in-law Althea Shantz and her parents Della (Cressman) and Abiah Shantz. Survived by her loving husband Purvis Rowe; step-children Art and Carol Eby, Al and Karen Eby, Don and Mary Rowe and Jim and Lillian Rowe. She is also survived by Judy Stewart; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren. Jewel was born in Plattsville, Ontario and worked in the offices of MacDonald Electric, Fairway Lumber and Ornamental Moulding, until her retirement in 1986. She enjoyed volunteering and knitting. She was a member of Preston Mennonite Church, Cambridge. Friends are invited to share their memories of Jewel with her family at the Edward R. Good Funeral Home, 171 King Street South, Waterloo, today (Saturday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A service to celebrate Jewel's life and faith will be held at Preston Mennonite Church, 791 Concession Road, Cambridge, on Sunday, April 24, 2005, at 2 p.m., with Rev. Claire Osinkosky officiating. Interment will take place in Calvary United Cemetery, St. Jacobs. In memory of Jewel, donations to Canadian Cancer Society or Preston Mennonite Church would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy and can be arranged through the funeral home.     COUTURE-MCLENNAN, Grace Hilda (nee Shantz) Passed away peacefully at Lanark Heights L.T.C. in Kitchener, on Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at the age of 92. Beloved wife of her late husbands, Clement Couture (1998) and Kenneth McLennan (2010). Loved mother to Clifford (Imeldo Salayo), Philippines, Bryan (Pat), Squamish B.C., Wayne, Kincardine, Barbara Sanderson (Barry), Kitchener, Kevin (Sue Teller), St. Clements, step-sons Brian (Nancy) McLennan, Qualicum, B.C. and Ross McLennan, Dungannon. Grace will be sadly missed by 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, sisters Rhea Gossman and Norma Pfohl (Lyle) and sister-in-laws Kay Shantz and Marjorie Shantz. Also remembered by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by her sons Grant (1993) and Roland (2011), parents Areli and Effie (Moyer) Shantz, as well as her siblings Pearl Elliott, Irene Lescom, Donald Shantz, Olive Blancher, Ivan Shantz (World War II), Elgin Shantz, Art Shantz, Howard Shantz, Walter Shantz and Ruth Shantz (infancy). Grace grew up near Plattsville. As a teenager she went to work at the Sunshine Company factory in Waterloo making smoke bombs. She joined the Canadian Woman's Army Corps (CWAC) in Nov. 1942 and was posted to Camp Ipperwash and Westminster Hospital in London, Ontario. There she met her future husband Clement Couture - one of her patients recovering from being shot in the leg overseas. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating Grace's life will be held in the chapel of the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home , 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Monday, August 8, 2016 at 1 p.m. with Rev. Chris Fickling officiating. Reception to follow in the funeral home's Fireside Room with Interment to take place at Parkview Cemetery, Waterloo.
