    Death Of Stephen Marshall

One of Ayr's Oldest and Most Esteemed Residents Passes in His 83rd Year

One of the oldest and most esteemed residents of our village passed away at 11 o'clock Tuesday evening in the person of Stephen Marshall, in his 83rd year. Mr. Marshall had been in failing health for several months, but took to his bed only two weeks ago. He was born on the Marshall homestead, 13th concession of Blenheim, now owned by his son, William, being the son of Anthony Marshall and Isabel Hall, who were pioneer settlers from Scotland. After his marriage he farmed in South Dumfries for several years and then removed to the Kingsborough farm, Townline, where he spent ten years. The family then went back to the home farm, 13th of Blenheim, where the next twenty years were spent. They came to Ayr 21 years ago and took up residence on Grey street. Mr. and Mrs. Marshall celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1933. Mr. Marshall was a member of the former Stanley Street Church and after union, was a valued member of Knox United congregation, where he served on the Board of Trustees for many years. He was one of the oldest members of Dolman Lodge, I.O.O.F., and a member of the Ayr Cemetery Company Board. In politics, he was a staunch Liberal. While engaged in farming, he was for many years a director of Drumbo Fair Agricultural Society and also served on the Perry's Corners school board. Mr. Marshall was widely known throughout this section and was much respected as a good friend and neighbor. Besides his sorrowing wife, whose maiden name was Jennie Scott, he is survived by the following children: J. A. Marshall, Calgary Wm. S. Marshall, Blenheim; Mrs. Robert Gladstone, North Dumfries; Lovett Marshall, Yorkton, Sask., and Mrs. Harold Foote, Toronto. Todd's Milling Co., comprising the firm of Thomas Todd & Son and John Scott, off Hawthorn Street - Among the most prominent manufacturing industries in Galt must be mentioned the Todd Milling Co., which is one of the largest concerns in this line in this section of the county. They have recently purchased the old Stockwell Mills, which had been lying idle for several years; and to meet the more modern requirements of the present day, they entirely overhauled the building, and took out all the old machinery and runs of stone, and entirely refitted it, giving the contract for the work to the celebrated flour mill builders, Messrs. Goldie & McCulloch, of this town, the interior arrangements being made after plans by the foreman, Mr. J.E. Wilson, which are complete in every particular. The building occupied is a substantially-built structure of stone, five stories in height, with basement, engine and boiler house; also a large store house for grain, fitted up with nine large hopper bins, thus being enabled to keep each grade separate. There is an automatic weigher for weighing the grain before passing into the rolls. In the basement of the mill is located the main line of shafting, with pulleys, two sets of large wheat brush machines, one Galt improved separator, one Galt improved cockle machine, one Galt improved smutter; also elevators for handling screenings and wheat. On the first floor are four runs of stones, twenty-four pairs of Galt improved rolls, three Galt improved flour packers and three weight scales. On the second floor are one improved centrifugal bolt, two middlings dusters and five purifiers; also bins for middlings and flour. The third floor contains four purifiers, four centrifugal bolts, one Galt improved middlings duster and bins. On the fourth floor are four Wilson's patent dust collectors and three four-reel bolts. On the fifth floor are two two-reel bolt chests, one single-reel chest, and the elevator tops, with dust protectors on each. The mill was fitted up under the direction of the foreman, Mr. Wilson who has several patents on the machines for the prevention of fire by friction, etc. The capacity of the mill is 350 barrels per day. The head miller is Mr. Anthony Marshall, who was lately in charge of a leading flour mill in Blenheim, Ont., and is a gentleman well qualified for the position in every respect, having had an extended experience of many years. The proprietors, Thomas Todd & Son and John Scott, are gentlemen of unquestioned business ability, push and enterprise, and are highly and justly esteemed in the community. Messrs. Todd & Son will continue to carry on their general produce and commission business, in the exportation of flour, grain and provisions, as heretofore.

    The Marshall Milling Company.

For years the industry now operated by the Marshall Milling Company was known in this section as the Dumfries Mill. Successively conducted by Thomas Stewart, Gaven Hume & Son. and Scott Bros., it was leased by the latter firm to the Marshalls - Robt., and Anthony - about two years ago. The mill has been refitted and modernized and is now run to the full capacity, 125 barrels per day, the power used being a combination of steam and water. The brands produced by the Marshall Milling Company are known as the "Snow Flake" and "Daisy" and find favor both at home and abroad, many customers living in the Maritime Provinces.

    Demise of Peter Marshall
    - In the death of Mr. Peter Marshall, which unlooked for event occurred early Monday morning at his home, Northumberland St., Ayr, the community loses another life-long, well-known and highly esteemed citizen. The deceased, who was in his 51st year, had been ill for some time, and had retired from his occupation as a farmer, but he had been improving in health up to a few days before his death, so that his sudden passing came as a shock to the community. He was born in the adjoining township of Blenheim, and lived there all his life until coming to Ayr last spring. Like many of the successful tillers of the soil in this section, Mr. Marshall adhered closely to his calling, seldom taking much interest in political or municipal affairs. He, however, identified himself with the Reform party, and in religion was a Presbyterian - a member of Stanley-St. Church and an ex-office bearer. His partner in life, whose maiden name was Maggie Oliver, survives, together with five children - three sons and two daughters, namely, Anthony, Leslie, Chester, Margaret and Belle, all of whom are at home. Three brothers and three sisters also survive. They are - Stephen, Blenheim; Anthony, Calgary; Ralph, Winnipeg; Maggie, Ayr; Mrs. E. Deans, Paris, and Mrs. Geo. Dickie, London. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, when the remains were followed to their last resting place in the Ayr cemetery by a large number of friends and relatives. The services were conducted by Deceased's pastor, Rev. D. I. Ellison. The pall-bearers were Messrs. Thos. Hall, Cameron Marshall, W. A. Ramsay, T. O. Scott, Wm. Manson and George Gourlay (Paris). Mr. Marshall was an Oddfellow and the members of the Order here attended the obsequies in a body. The cortege was the largest ween in Ayr in some time.

    Victim of Infantile Paralysis
Marion Gladstone Succumbs on Thursday to Dread Childhood Disease - The sympathy of the entire community goes out to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gladstone in the loss of their eldest daughter, Marion, aged 11 years, whose death occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning from that dread scourge of childhood, infantile paralysis. She had been slightly unwell only a few days and her illness had been diagnosed as the dread paralysis only the day previous, when the doctor had been called. A supply of serum was immediately rushed from Toronto and administered to the small patient, but without avail.

Marion was a great favorite with her playmates of the Ayr Public School, where she had recently been successful in passing her examinations from the junior third class to the senior third. She also attended the Sabbath School of Knox United Church. Besides her sorrowing parents, she is survived by a younger brother, Billy, and a small sister, Elspeth. The funeral was held privately on Thursday afternoon to Ayr Cemetery.
