Mrs. Gerard R. (Margaret) Slattery, former Children's Hospital of Michigan President and Chairman of the Board from 1956 until 1972 passed away on Wednesday, June 30, 1999. Known affectionately as "Mrs. Children's Hospital", Mrs. Slattery was a longtime community leader and volunteer. "Mrs. Slattery was unfailingly gracious," said Dr. Larry Fleischmann, interim Senior Vice President of Children's Hospital of Michigan. "Her passion and dedication to children is unparalleled. Her legacy lives on inside these walls each and every day." Mrs. Slattery, the former Mrs. Frank Couzens, followed a family tradition of service to Children.

Wednesday, June 30 at home after a lingering illness. Age 95. Wife of the late Frank Couzens, Mayor of Detroit and the late Gerard R. Slattery. Mother of Frank Couzens Jr. (Linda), Peggy C. (Edward) Roney, Mary E. Couzens, Barbara C. (Leo) Brennan, George Lang Couzens, Patricia S. (Peter) Quail, and the late James Couzens II and Homer (Skip) Couzens. Also survived by 37 grandchildren and 60 great-grandchildren. Requiem Mass at St. Paul Church, Grosse Pointe Farms 11 a.m. Friday, July 2. Visitation at home 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Thursday July 1. Interment at Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorial constributions may be made to the Margaret Couzens Slattery Endowment Fund at Childrens Hospital of Michigan or to the charity of your choice.

Margaret Couzens Slattery, always helping others

GROSSE POINTE FARMS -- Margaret Couzens Slattery, a champion of civic duty, wasn't shy about getting her point across.

"When it came to helping others, she was very insistent. She wasn't a bit a bashful," son Frank Couzens Jr. said.

Mrs. Slattery, a long-time patron of Children's Hospital of Detroit and civic programs, died Wednesday, June 30, 1999, in her Grosse Pointe Farms home after a lengthy illness. She was 95.

Born in Kitchener, Ontario, Mrs. Slattery was educated at Kenwood Sacred Heart Academy in Albany, N.Y. She moved to Detroit in 1932 after marrying Frank Couzens, who was mayor of Detroit from 1933 to 1938, and chairman of the Wabeek State Bank of Detroit. He died in 1950.

In 1955, she married Gerard R. Slattery, an insurance executive who died in 1989.

Mrs. Slattery was involved in a wide range of activities.

"She did it all really, because she wanted to help others. That was her main goal," Couzens said.

Mrs. Slattery was president of the League of Catholic Women, director of the United Way of Michigan, a trustee of the Greater Detroit Area Hospital Council, a Detroit Historical Commission member and vice-president, a trustee of the American Red Cross Detroit Chapter, a director of the Girl Scouts of America, a trustee of Detroit Educational TV and a member of the Citizens Advisory Committee of the Detroit Board of Education.

As part of her patronage of the Children's Hospital of Michigan in Detroit in the 1950s, Mrs. Slattery led the successful effort to raise $23 million to build a new facility, replacing the one built in 1896.

In recognition of her years of community service, Mrs. Slattery was awarded an honorary doctorate of literature by the University of Detroit in 1952. In 1963, she received the Doctor Derry Award from Marygrove College and the Hannah H. Solomon Award for Exceptional Community Service.

Survivors include two sons, Frank Couzens Jr. and George Lang Couzens four daughters, Peggy C. Roney, Mary E. Couzens, Barbara C. Brennan and Patricia S. Quail, 37 grandchildren and 60 great-grandchildren.

A requiem mass for Mrs. Slattery will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Paul Church, 157 Lake Shore in Grosse Pointe Farms.

Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Detroit.
