1943: New Hamburg man invents a better hockey stick

New design patented by Clayton Berger of New Hamburg

Originally, hockey sticks were manufactured out of one piece of wood. This prevented a proper curve in the heel and toe of the stick.

But a new revolution in hockey stick construction arrived in 1943 with a patent by Clayton Berger of New Hamburg, and the hockey stick was transformed into what we know today.

Berger's development changed the simple hockey stick into multiple different sections which came together to make the entire stick.

This alteration allowed it to be manufactured with substantially less wasted material and also created a very light, strong and durable hockey stick.

This exhibit and 149 more are available to view at the "To Canada with Love from Wilmot" exhibit at Castle Kilbride, which contains 150 people, places and things that helped to put Wilmot
