    August Schlender

    The death occurred here this morning of Mr. August Schlender in his 92nd year. The deceased was born in Germany. He was a lifelong resident of this city and was well known. He is survived by two sons, Charles of Hamilton and Henry of Kitchener, and by two daughters, Mrs. John E. Miller of Waterloo and Mrs. E. P. Steffler of Kitchener. Some 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive. Mr. Schlender was predeceased by one son, Reinhold of St. Louis, Mo., a year ago. The funeral will take place Saturday afternoon at three o'clock with a service at the Lippert and Hunter Funeral Home. Internment will be made in Mount Hope cemetery, Rev. J. Schmieder, pastor of St. Matthew's church, will have charge of the services.

    Notes:

    Henry Schlender, 86, a life-long resident of Kitchener, died Saturday after a lengthy illness. He was born Oct. 30, 1875, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. August Schlender. His wife, the former Louisa Bucher, died in 1921. Surviving are one son, Karl, of Sarnia; two daughters, Violet of Buffalo, Mrs. William (Alice) Burkhead of Waterloo; a sister, Mrs. Martha Miller of Waterloo and one grandchild. Two daughters predeceased him. The body is at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, where service will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. By Very Rev. F.G. Stewart of St. Andrew's Presbyterian church. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

    Following an illness of three months, Mrs. E.P. (Annie) Steffler, 73, died Tuesday at her residence, 132 Homewood Ave. She was the former Anna Marie Schlender, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. August Schlender. She was born Nov. 12, 1881 in Kitchener and was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. Her marriage to Enoch P. Steffler took place June 19, 1907 in Kitchener. She is survived by one son, Reginald of Kingsdale; two daughters, Dorothy at home and Mrs. Peter (Vearl) Ernst of Kitchener; one brother Henry Schlender of Kitchener; one sister, Mrs. John E. (Martha) Miller of Waterloo and four grandchildren. Public funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. at Schreiter Sandrock Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Rev. Dr. John Schmieder will officiate. The body is at the funeral home.

    Accidently Shot a Second Time

    Arthur Schlender Was Toying With a Loaded Rifle When Gun is Discharged, Bullet Passing Through Hand.

    Niagara Falls, Ontario, Dec 26, - Arthur Schlender, 15 years of age, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Schlender of Victoria Avenue, was accidentally shot on Christmas Eve and is in the Niagara Falls General Hospital. With some companions in the rear of the lad's home they were examining a 22 calibre rifle which one of the boys had received for a Christmas gift, when in some manner the gunn was discharged, the bullet entering Schlender's right hand. He was removed to the hospital and yesterday afternoon taken to the Memorial Hospital, Niagara Falls, N. Y. where the X-ray was used and the bullet located. A coincidence is the fact that young Schlender was accidently shot on a Christmas Eve seven years ago, the bullet entering his eye.

    All I can tell you about Reinhold's son Arthur is that he married someone named Clara, but that they don't appear to have had any children. They lived in a house built by a Scottish immigrant in the 1860s, which they purchased from the government (via another vendor) in 1939. (The property had been expropriated by the Welland Canal Company in 1913 for the expansion of the 4th canal.)

    A couple of details about Arthur is that he had first a tobacconist and then a restaurant (the Bright Spot) in Thorold. Before moving to the US, the family seems to have settled in Niagara Falls. Here, the young Arthur had two mishaps with discharging rifles

    Arthur Reinhold Schlender was married to Clara Abbey. They had one daughter, Eileen, born in 1919 in NY state. Eileen married Duncan Schooley and they had four children. They lived in Merriton, Ontario which is now part of St. Catherines.

    Notes:

    A Kitchener man, Reginald Steffler, 46, of 101 Fourth St., was killed today in an automobile accident at Orangeville. Provincial Police said Mr. Steffler had spent the night at the cottage of a friend, George Thompson in Orangeville. The exit from the property includes a laneway on a steep incline with a gate halfway up the hill.

    Car Brakes Slip

    Police said Mr. Steffler stopped the car after passing though the gate and then walked behind the car to close the gate. At this moment the brakes of the car clipped and the vehicle shot backwards, knocking Mr. Staffler to the ground and dragging him 10 feet. He was dead when found. A salesman for Bond Hardware Company Ltd., Guelph, Mr. Steffler previously operated a hardware store in Kingsdale for 10 years

    Family Survives

    A native of Kitchener, he is survived by his father, Enoch Steffler of Kitchener, his wife, the former Alberta Widmeyer, three sons, Murray of London, Ont., Dale and Barry of Kitchener, and a daughter, Caroline, also of Kitchener. Also surviving are two sisters, Dorothy, and Mrs. Peter (Vearle) Ernst, both of Kitchener. The body is at the Schreiter-Sandrock Funeral Home, Kitchener, pending funeral arrangements. An inquest will be held in Orangeville on Wednesday.

    Reginald Stauffer

    Funeral for Reginald Stauffer, 46, of 101 Fourth St., will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. at the Schreiter-Sandrock Funeral Home. Rev. Karl Knauff will officiate. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery. Mr. Steffler, who was killed when his car crushed him Tuesday at Orangeville, attended St. Luke's Lutheran Church and was a member of Twin City Lodge, AF and AM.

    Of Waterloo. Past away peacefully at A.R. Goudie Home, Kitchener, on Sunday, July 25, 2004. Beloved mother of Douglas and his wife Priscilla (Dolly), Joy and her husband Clarence Bauman. Also survived by nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren: Douglas and Nancy Meier (Gavin, Christopher, Laura), Christine and Jon Janelle (Judi, Jessa, Jonathan), Carolyn and Michael Fitzpatrick (Layna), Jan and John Varga of Calgary (Jonathan, Jordan), Scott and Jane Huehn of Oakville (Molly), Shelly and Brian Ellacott (Leah, Ryan), Bradley and Cheryl Huehn (Taylor, Allyson, Nathan, Noah), Jeffrey and Stephanie Huehn of Vancouver (Madison, Joshua), Jason and Tanya Huehn (Davis), and her sister, Adele Ciceri (Eby). Predeceased by her loving husband, Herbert John Huehn; her parents, John and Martha Miller; her son-in-law, Allan Meier; brothers, Arnold, Harry, John and sisters, Adene and Florence. Irene will be sadly missed by many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral and Cremation Centre, 621 King St. W., Kitchener Tuesday, July 27 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Services will be held in the Ratz-Bechtel Chapel on Wednesday, July 28, 2004 at 11 a.m. officiated by Pastor Doug Kranz. Interment in Parkview cemetery , Waterloo. A very special thank you to the staff of Unit One of the A.R. Goudie Eventide Home for all their love and tender care.     JOHN EDWARD MILLER

    The death occurred Monday afternoon of John Edward Miller, age 4 years, the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. John Miller, 161 Fisher St. after a very short illness. The bright life which was taken away from the home will always be remembered by hie kind thoughts and actions not only toward his bereaved parents and family but by every person who had the privilege of knowing him. The funeral took place this afternoon from his parents resident to Mount Hope cemetery.

    Her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ came to Sunnyside Home on Joy's 90th birthday (October 8th), picked her up and carried her home to eternity in Heaven. After spending her childhood in New Hamburg, she moved to Waterloo with her parents, Herb and Irene Huehn (both deceased) and her brother Douglas (deceased 2019) (Dolly) Huehn. At the young age of 19, she married the love of her life, Allan Meier (deceased 1982). Together they raised two children; teaching them to love Jesus, love and respect others, be kind to everyone, to always do your best and to make the most of the time we have.

    After Allan's death, Joy was called upon to help out a kind widower from the church. One thing lead to another and in 1984 Joy and Clarence Bauman (deceased 2010) were married. They built a wonderful life together travelling, spending time together at LutheRanch and playing or listening to music. Joy was always giving of her self, her time and her resources. Whether she was sharing the bounty of her garden, tying knots to make blankets for missions, serving breakfasts to children so they wouldn't go to school hungry, supporting her church or offering an ear to listen or a shoulder to cry on...she always made time for those who needed her.

    The greatest joy in Joys' life was her family. She brought light, love and laughter into every gathering. None of the family ever left her without a hug and an "I love you". Her children, Douglas (Nancy) Meier and Christine (Jon - deceased 2017) Janelle have been so blessed to have had such a wonderful, loving, caring mom. Her grandchildren Gavin Meier, Judi (Justin) Armitage, Christopher (Michelle) Meier, Jessa (Mike) Cobean, Jonathon Janelle (Michelle Palmer) and Laura (Jesse) Ferreira will all carry great memories of fun times with Grandma. Joy will also be lovingly remembered by her 13 great grandchildren Alani and Farrah Meier; Owen, Olivia and Emma Armitage; Lincoln and Morgan Meier; Evy, Colton, Cora and Jesse Cobean; Mila and Leo Ferreira.

    Joy's family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 12, 2021, at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener. Visitation will continue from 10 to 10:45 a.m on Wednesday, October 13, 2021, with a funeral service in the chapel at 11 a.m. Private interment at Parkview Cemetery.
