    Well-Known Banker Died Last Wednesday

    Well-known in banking circles in this area for many years, Charles K. Smith of New Hamburg, died on Wednesday of last week at St Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, at the age of 77. Funeral services were held Saturday at Trinity Lutheran church here, Rev Norman A. Keffer officiating. Temporary entombment took place in the Graff Memorial Chapel at Riverside cemetery. The Bruce J. Omand Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

    Born in Heidelberg, Feb. 8, 1892, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Smith. In 1907 he worked at the Bank of Hamilton in Berlin, now Kitchener, and subsequently at branches of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce in Neustadt, Paris, Milverton, Ingersoll, Parkhill and New Hamburg. He retired from the New Hamburg branch in 1957.

    He was treasurer and a member of the New Hamburg library board for 27 years; a campaign manager for the Canadian Red Cross Society; secretary of Trinity Lutheran Church for 25 years; a member of the New Hamburg Turf Club for 15 years and an honorary life member of the New Hamburg Board of Trade.

    Besides his parents, he was predeceased by four sisters and a brother.

    Surviving besides his wife, the former Frieda Berlet, are two daughters, Mrs. Clinton (Betty) Forster, Dundas, and Mrs. Stanley (Doris) Langford, New Hamburg; a brother Otto, Kitchener; two sisters, Frieda and Mrs. Otto (Eleanora) Scheirholtz, both of Kitchener; and four grandchildren.

    Charles married Frieda Johanna Berlet 24 Jul 1917, Kitchener, Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada. Frieda (daughter of Valentine R. Berlet and Maria "Mary" Spahr) was born 7 Apr 1895, Linwood, Wellesley Twp., Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada; died 26 Feb 1982, Kitchener, Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada; was buried , Riverside Cemetery, New Hamburg, Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada.
