SNYDER. - On the 23d of Oct. 1900, in Wilmot Twp., Ont., Bro. John K. Snyder, aged 63 years, 11 months and 17 days. We trust that according to his desire he went home to his resting place "to die no more." He suffered with Bright's disease over a year. Sometimes he had much pain, but was not confined to his home long. He was present at our recent communion meeting not long before his death, thus expressing his faith in the great atonement accomplished by the death and suffering of our Lord. He was married to Veronica Shantz, Mar. 26, 1861. To this union were born eleven children, one of whom died in infancy. He leaves a widow, ten children and eleven grandchildren. Buried at Shantz's grave yard, in Wilmot, Oct. 25th, 1900, followed by a large concourse of friends to his last resting place. Funeral services were conducted at the house by A. S. Cressman and by Joseph Nargang at the grave. In the meeting house the services were conducted by Orphan Wismer in English, from I Pet. 1: 24, 25, and in German by Noah Stauffer from 2 Cor. 5: 1.

She was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Sept. 19, 1887, and had reached her 48th year. She was a member of First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, Ont. Y.; Lorne Shantz, Waterloo, and Clarence Shantz of Detroit, Mich.), and 1 sister (Mrs. John Lichty of Waterloo). She was a consistent Christian, dying in the gracious assurance of the Gospel. She was an interested mother in the welfare of her home. Her interest in the Church was constant. For many years she was caretaker of the Church building. This brought her into contact with the many activities of the church. Thus she was well known. She will be missed in the home and circles beyond, especially for her cheery disposition, in spite of clouds, keeping that steadfast gaze and trust in God. May the Lord sustain, and guide the family in spite of their great loss. The services were in charge of the pastor, Bro. C. F. Derstine. Theme, "The Inescapable Appointment" (Eccl. 8: 8). Bro. Manasseh Hallman, a former pastor, assisted in the service. All services and burial at the First Mennonite Church.

New Schmidt Woods trail now open in Wilmot

Wilmot residents now have a new three-kilometre trail to walk, hike and cycle on - and with winter edging closer, it will soon be open to snowmobilers, too.

The Schmidt Woods trail opened Oct. 5, and runs from the northwest corner of the Wilmot Recreation Complex (at the Nafziger Road entrance) to the east end of the property, eventually connecting paved bike lanes at Gingerich Road.

About two kilometres of the trail has a compacted stone dust multi-purpose surface. The remaining kilometre is a natural ground hiking trail, which leads through the forest surrounding the Rec Complex.

The lands for the trails were donated to Wilmot Township by the Schmidt Estate as a tribute to the memory of Harold and Enid Schmidt's contributions to both Baden and the township.

The $257,000 construction, funded in part through the CIP 150 grant program, ended up costing less than anticipated.

A full trail map can be found on the township's website, www.wilmot.ca.

Predeceased by his parents, Etril and Alice Snyder, his mother and father-in-law Wayne and Lovina Snyder and sisters-in-law Doreen Snyder, Nancy Martin and Marilyn Snyder and son, our beloved nephew, Scott Snyder.

At Pete's request, there will be no service. Visitation will be held at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St S, Waterloo, on Friday, September 1st from 2-5 pm and 7-9 pm.

We both loved flowers, so send away if that is your wish. Charities Pete supported whole-heartedly include KidsAbility and Mennonite Central Committee. Contributions may be made at the funeral home www.erbgood.com or by calling 519-745-8445.

After study at Ontario College of Art, Toronto, Pete painted Waterloo County images for more than fifty years. He enjoyed his time at the easel and talking to his Old Order Mennonite friends and acquaintances, and was pleased to meet those who came to view his work and, especially, those who chose to hang it in their homes and businesses. Pete got especially energized while discussing commission paintings with the ordering executives. Some of those relationships went beyond strict business. He was overwhelmed by the community support he received and humbled by the community awards generously bestowed.

It was a charmed life, exactly suited to this gregarious man, highlighted by his sense of humour and interest in this world of ours. Travel expanded his horizons and sometimes destinations appeared in his paintings.

I feel fortunate to have been his partner in inventing a way of life. I will always miss his optimistic outlook which I have admired since I first laid eyes on him when I was thirteen. He will always be in my mind and heart.

Grateful thanks to Dr. Janet MacEachern and the Grand River Cancer Centre. All whom Pete met there interested him and made him many new friends Susan, Dorothy, Julie and Corinna especially, and many others. I expect you know who you are. You did your best to conquer his leukemia but a cure is still pending.
