Cressman. --- Louisa, daughter of the late Joseph Y. and Elizabeth (Stauffer) Shantz, was born near Haysville, Ont., in 1865; passed away June 20, 1950; aged 85 y. In 1886 she was married to Ezra Cressman, who preceded her in death. She and her husband were residents of Wilmot Twp., their entire lifetime, having farmed for many years. Soon after marriage she became a Christian and joined the Biehn Mennonite Church, where she continued as an active member until her passing. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Their home was blessed with 3 sons (Leander and Howard, who predeceased her, and Curtis, a bishop in the Mennonite Church, who resides on the home farm). She also leaves 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She and her husband established a family altar so that the family might worship the Lord together as the children grew up. She had comparatively good health until a month before her death, when she suffered a stroke. Funeral services were conducted June 23 at the home and at the Biehn Church by Manasseh Hallman and M. H. Roth. Her body was laid to rest in the cemetery adjoining the church.

Just one week previous to his death he was taken seriously ill with pleuro-pneumonia and God saw best to take him home. During his illness he suffered severely and continuously, but he bore it all much patience and Christian fortitude. At the age of 14 he accepted Christ as his personal Savior, united with the Mennonite Church, and remained a faithful member to the end. In his untimely departure he leaves a sorrowing companion, one son (Keith), father, mother, two brothers (Leander and Curtis), besides a host of relatives and friends. In the home he will be greatly missed as an affectionate companion and a loving father. In the Church his service and counsel can no longer be personally given, but we bow to our heavenly Father, and from our heart's desire to say, "Thy will be done." Funeral services were held Mar. 14, from his late home to the Bean Church, and burial in the adjoining cemetery. Brethren Ozias Cressman, Manasseh Hallman, Moses Shantz, and Oscar Burkholder conducted the services. Text, Rev. 13: 14.

Elsie Cressman, a native of Wilmot Township, was a well-known pioneer in the development and practice of midwifery. Locally, she was a key person in the establishment of St. Jacob's Midwives.

Cressman's pioneering work in having midwifery accepted as a profession laid the groundwork for midwifery programs at several Canadian universities. In Ontario, McMaster, Ryerson and Laurentian Universities all now offer Bachelor of Science degrees in midwifery.

Internationally, Cressman was instrumental in establishing and running a number of heath clinics in East Africa. Elsie organized a leprosarium on the shore of Lake Victoria at Shirati, Tanzania where she is credited with integrating leprosy patients back into their communities. Later, she started what became known as the Tom Mboya Memorial Health Centre, Kenya.

    Missionary Returns From Africa

Canada is the best place to live is the opinion of Miss Elsie Cressman, R.N., misionary-on-furlough from Tanzania, East Africa. Miss Cressman has arrived at the home of her father, Bishop Curtis C. Cressman after a five year stay in a Leporsariuim in Africa for a possible two year leave. She spent a month touring the countries of Egypt, Italy, France, The Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland, and was met at New York Port by her sister, Mrs. Gordon Bean and Mr. Bean.

While she finds her work interesting and worthwhile, as she has had most encouraging results, Miss Cressman also feels the need of a holiday rest. When in Africa she has contact with twenty dive tribes. With regard to climatic conditions it is only at mid-day that the heat is extreme where she was stationed, and she did not see any snow covered ground throughout her tour until she arrived in Canada. The only exception were the mountain tops in Switzerland.

Upon her arrival she was the guest of honor at a family gathering of approximately fifty people, Which was held at the Blenheim Mennonite Church. A Fellowship Turkey Dinner at which about 100 people attended was given for her at the Biehn Mennonite Church. She was also honored by a birthday supper at the home of her brother, Howard Cressman and Mrs. Cressman on Monday night.
