Samuel Y. Shantz, "was born January 15th, 1825. On March 11th, 1845, he was married to Esther Erb who was born April 6th, 1827. Soon after their marriage they moved on the farm where now is what is known as Shantz Station (Shantz Station was named after Mr. Shantz and was situated near where his farm buildings were located. The station was burnt many years ago but the place still goes by that name), where they resided until the Grand Trunk Railroad was built when he sold his farm to the company and moved to North Dumfries Township, not far from Blair, where he purchased a large farm. Here he resided until some twenty years ago when he purchased the farm (This farm belonged to Jacob M. Clemens, generally known as "Bachelor Jacob", and after his decease it was sold and Mr. Shantz purchased it), on which he now resides. It is about two and one-half miles south-west of Berlin. To them was born a large family"

SHANTZ - Samuel Y. Shantz, son of Jacob and Mary (Yost) Shantz who moved from Montgomery Co., Pa., to Canada in 1810, was born Jan. 15, 1825. On the 11th of March, 1845, he was married to Esther Erb who survives him. This union was blessed with eight sons and five daughters of whom two daughters have passed away. Bro. Shantz united with the Mennonite Church in his youth and was a faithful member until his death. He was widely known and hightly esteemed, and his liberality and wise counsel were much appreciated. He had been a sufferer for several yeaars and was confined to the house for several months. On the 9th of May he was afflicted with a stroke of paralysis to which he succumbed on the 15th having attained the age of 75 ys. and 4 ms. The funeral was held on the 17th from his late residence two miles south-west of Berlin, where the burial took place. The funeral was largely attended. Services by E.S. Hallman from 2 Cor. 5: 1 and Noah Stauffer from Heb. 11: 10. May God comfort the bereaved family^.

Gehman.-Angeline (Shantz) Gehman, was born at Bridgeport, Ont., April 10, 1846. On May 3, 1864 she was united in marriage with Solomon B. Gehman, and about 9 years later, both were converted and united with the Mennonite Church. On Nov. 26, 1882, Bro. Gehman was ordained to the ministry which position he faithfully filled till Nov. 19, 1912, when he was called to his reward. He was a powerful speaker, and in most of his sermons, laid special emphasis on repentance and getting right with God, being instrumental in a great revival that took place in Waterloo Co., in 1885. This union was blessed with 6 children of whom one son (John) preceded them. Sister Gehman died at the home of her daughter in Waterloo, aged 81 y. 8 m. 23 d., leaving 2 daughters and 3 sons (Susanna - Mrs. John Wismer, Samuel, Esther - Mrs. Norman Gingerich, Willie, and Solomon).The funeral was held at the Waterloo Mennonite Church on Jan. 6, conducted by Jonas Snider and Noah Hunsberger.

Noted Figure In Preston Life Dies Following Stroke Suffered Last Week ; Church Official For 25 Years

Following a stroke suffered last Wednesday Peter E. Shantz died last evening at his home on Church street in his 80th year. The deceased is survived by his wife three daughters, Miss M. B. Shantz, Philadelphia: Mrs. L. Archibald, Minneapolis, Minn.; Mrs. J. G. Gardner, Regina, Sask. and three sons, Cyrus, of Preston; Samuel, of Toronto and Fred, of Preston. Five brothers, Aaron, Samuel and Daniel, of Kitchener, Frank of the state of Washington and Moses of Didsbury, Alta. and one sister, Mrs. Moses Plowman, of Kitchener, also survive. The funeral will be held on Thursday afternoon from his late residence to the Preston cemetery. The late Mr. Shants was born at Shantz station and came to Preston from Elmira 63 years ago and purchased what is now known as the Shantz foundry from Jacob Wahn. For many years he conducted the foundry business, successfully manufacturing farm implements and later trucks. He retired from active business a few years ago. For many years he had been actively associated with Preston municipal life and always took a keen interest in the town's affairs. He was reeve of Preston at one time and during the federal election of 1896 was the Liberal candidate for the riding and altho defeated polled a large number of votes. The late Mr. Shantz was a faithful member of the United church and for 26 years was recording steward and treasurer of that congregation. At the time of his demise he was senior director of the Waterloo Mutual Fire Insurance company. Mr. Shantz 's passing removes from Preston, one of the town's most notable figures and his demise is mourned by the entire continuity.

Jacob Beck (born Grand Duchy of Baden, 1816), an enterprising young German, came to Waterloo Township in 1837 from Schenectady, N. Y., having come from Germany the year before. He had invented a peculiar water wheel, described as of small size and large power, which soon gave him an enviable reputation. ...Call him Peter … Peter Erb Shantz, born in 1849, to Samuel Y. and Esther (Erb) Shantz. Samuel farmed while Esther raised 13 children at a once-dreamt-of community called Shantz Station about halfway along Highway 7 between Berlin and Guelph.
In his early 20s, Peter was already manufacturing farm implements in Elmira with partner Abraham Z. Detweiler.
Meanwhile, Preston village council was eager to attract industries, so with a $5,000 bonus as the carrot, Shantz and Detweiler agreed to move south.
Backtracking to the early 1850s, Valentine Wahn, John Clare and Jacob Beck operated an iron foundry business on the main road connecting Preston and Berlin.
The frame factory was near the Speed River at the foot of a steep hill. Beck left in 1856, moving to Wilmot Township where he founded Baden. Clare too backed out, so Wahn took over, specializing in making cast-iron stoves.
In 1875, with part of the bonus money, Shantz and Detweiler purchased Wahn's building and established Preston Agricultural Works.

Fire struck in 1883 and Detweiler sold out.
As sole owner, Peter Shantz constructed a solid brick and stone building on the same site and for the next 50 years he produced top-of-the-line farm machinery, warm air furnaces, sleighs and warehouse trucks.
Peter's civic involvement went beyond manufacturing. He was a councillor and deputy-reeve in Preston, sat on the school board, and was the driving force behind erecting Preston's town hall in 1887.
In the 1900 federal election, he placed a close second to George Clare in Waterloo South.
Peter Shantz died in 1928 but the company lasted another four decades. In 1969, it shut down and the property was sold to a Toronto developer who hoped to put up a 12-storey apartment. Shantz.--Jacob E. Shantz was born April 27, 1855; died at Freeport, Ont., Mar. 31, 1922; aged 66 y. 11 m. 4 d. He was married to Lydia Bowman in November, 1877, who with two sons and one daughter and thirteen grandchildren are left to mourn his departure. He left a testimony that all is well and was ready to go and be with Jesus. Funeral services were held on Apr. 4 at the East End Mennonite Church at Kitchener, Ont., conducted by A. B. Snyder and Jonas Snider. Text, Isa. 26: 3. Burial in adjoining cemetery.

Snyder - On the 24th of June, 1898, at Berlin, Waterloo Co., Ont., Mary Ann Shantz, beloved wife of Isaac C. Snyder, aged 43 years, 1 month and 27 days. Sister Snyder leaves a sorrowing husband and six children, the youngest about 7 years old; two children preceded her to the spirit world; also parents, six brothers, three sisters and many friends, who will miss her at her household duties and in the church services. She was resigned to the will of God and was willing to go at the Master's call. Buried on the 20th at C. Eby's meeting house. Services by S. Bowman in German and N. Stauffer in English to a crowded house of attentive hearers.

Moses E. Shantz, 76 years of age, pioneer setter of the Didsbury district, died in a Calgary nursing home on Saturday, February 10.
He was born near Kitchener, Ont., and came to Didsbury in 1900, where he resided until 1933. Since then he had lived with his children.
Deceased is survived by his wife Magdalena; one daughter, Mrs. Ed. Weber, Calgary. Three sons; Lincoln, Kitchener, Ont.; Clayton, Rosebud, Alta.; Vernon, High River, Alta. S. E. SHANTZ is a native of the County of Waterloo, where he was educated and has since been engaged in farming. He was elected township councillor in 1901, which office he has held continually ever since. Mr. Shantz was a member of the board of health of the township of Waterloo for five years.

Bowman. --- Susanna E., daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Y. Shantz, was born in North Dumfries, April 5, 1862; died suddenly at her home in Kitchener, Ont.; aged 82 y. She was a member of the First Mennonite Church. Her husband, Moses C. Bowman, passed away April 28, 1933. Surviving are 4 sons (Alvah S. and Edwin S., Guernsey, Sask.; Henry S. and Moses S., of Kitchener), one daughter (Melinda, of Kitchener), 2 brothers (Daniel, of Kitchener, and Franklin, Wenatchee, Wash.), and 15 grandchildren. Four sisters and six brothers predeceased her. She was a faithful Christian and a real helpmeet in a pastor's responsibility. She was known for her kindliness and hospitality. She will be greatly missed in the church, city, and community, as well as by the family. Funeral services were in charge of the pastor, C. F. Derstine. Text, Num. 23: 10 - "The Victorious End of the Righteous." The brethren S. F. Coffman, M. Hallman, ad Merle Shantz spoke tributes to the departed.

Gehman, William S., son of Solomon B. and Angeline (Shantz) Gehman, was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., July 1, 1880; died at the Elkhart (Ind.) General Hospital, May 22, 1962; aged 81 y. 10 m. 21 d. He was married to Ella Kulp, who died in 1937. On March 18, 1940, he was married to Dora Shantz, who survives. Also surviving is one brother (S. S. Gehman, Preston, Ont.). Succumbs To Heart Attack At Moore Street Home; President, Board Of Trade

Suffering a heart attack at ten o'clock Sunday morning, Ald. Frederick Robert Shantz passed away at his home on Moore street shortly afterward. His passing came with tragic suddenness as he was said to be recovering from the effects of a similar shock a week ago. Word of the paasing of Ald. Shantz cast a profound gloom over municipal circles of Preston where he was popularly known. Mayor Mark M. Donald when acquainted with Ald. Shantz' s death expressed profound regret. Other municipal officers as well as N. 0. Hipel, M.P.P., expressed a note of sorrow in his sudden demise.

Board of Trade President

In the death of Ald. Fred R. Shants the Preston Board of Trade loses its president. He had been a valued member of that organisation for some years having held the chief executire office in 1931 and was returned by acclamation this year at the annual meeting in January. The late Mr. Shantz had climbed steadily in the board holding office first in 1929 when he was elected to the second vice-presidency. In 1930 he was vice-president. Of a keen progressive mind, Ald. Shantz took an active interest in the Board of Trade. He was particularly anxious that more industries should be secured for the town. One of his last acts on behalf of the board was to aid in the preparation of material for industrial publication which the board is sponsoring. Carrying his activities further abroad, Ald. Shantz was chairman of the industrial committee of the Grand River Valley Boards of Trade. In this connection he represented Preston at the various meetings of that body throughout the valley. Because of its scope and possibilities, the late alderman was particularly enthusiastic over the Grand River Valley Boards of Trade.

Alderman since 1929

As an alderman the late Fred Shantz was very conscientious. He was elected in 1929 and that year started preparation of the building bylaw being chairman of the bylaws committee. The following year, 1930, he was reelected and was placed in charge of the industrial committee of the council, a post which he has held until his death. Through the late alderman's initiative considerable advancement was made towards the improvement of the Galt-Preston highway, a project that he worked at diligently in the hopes that eventually that dangerous thoroughfare would be bettered. Only a few days before his illness Ald. Shantz had been in communication with Premier Henry regarding the highway situation and he confidently felt that the present year would see some definite steps taken as an unemployment aid. Ald. Shantz 's last appearance in public office was at the last meeting of the.town council when he delivered a lengthy criticism of Hydro administration. A lifelong Liberal. Ald. Shantz was generally looked upon as candidate for that party in the next federal election. He was nominated at the last contention the party had in South Waterloo losing the nomination to C. R. Widdifield of Galt by a single vote.

Born In Preston

The late Fred Shantz was born in Preston, son of the late Peter E. Shantz and Mrs. Shantz of Church street, on October 12, 1875 and was in his 57th year. After receiving his primary education at local public schools he attended Galt Collegiate institute and after graduation from there entered the foundry. Leaving that institution he went to Toronto where he was with the advertising departments of the Mail and Empire and The Globe between 1908 and 1914. For a time he was with the Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada in Toronto and later was connected with that company in Detroit to which city he was transferred from Toronto. For some years he was in Cleveland and St. Louis. The late alderman returned to Preston in 1927 assuming the trusteeship of the P. E. Shantz estate. As a director for Preston of the Waterloo Historical Society, the late Ald. Shantz was much interested in its activities. He was also president of the Shantz Reunion held in Waterloo in 1920. One of the citizens interested in bringing the Dominion Motor Sleigh Company, Limited, to Preston, the late Ald. Shantz was Secretary, of that firm. He was also a member of the Preston Business Men's Club and on the executive of the South Waterloo Liberal Association. He is survived by his wife, who before her marriage was Bertha Cable of Toronto. Two brothers, Cyrus B. of Preston and Samuel P. of Toronto and three sisters, Mr. John G. Gardiner of Regina, Sask., Mrs. Leon Archibald of Minneapolis Minn. and Minnie B. Shantz, also of Minneapolis, survive. The funeral will take place from his late residence, 966 Moore street, Preston, on Tuesday afternon at 2.30 o'clock. Interment will be made in Preston cemetery .

Samuel P. Shantz

By Record Correspondent PRESTON - Samuel Preston Shantz, 68, local industrialist, died suddenly in his sleep at his home, 407 Queen St., of a heart attack early this morning. While suffering from a heart condition for the past seven years, the late Mr. Shantz had continued active in his industrial responsibilities and in his civic and other interests. The deceased was born in Preston, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Erb Shantz. His father was the founder of the business which operates under his name and which Samuel Shantz was manager at the time of his death. Residing in Preston until 24 years of age, the late Mr. Shantz was in the customs department at Kitchener for a time, and then for periods was associated with the former Galt Reformer and the Toronto Daily Star. For a number of years he was engaged with the British Dominion Emigration Society in Toronto. Prior to returning to Preston In 1940 he organized the scenic motor coach tours in Toronto and managed that enterprise. He became associated with the family industrial business, the P. E. Shantz Foundry, and since the death of his brother, Cyrus, in 1944, was manager of the concern. A life member of the Century Club, Toronto, the late Mr. Shantz was twice president of that club. He was a member of the Canadian Manufacturers' Association and the Grand River Industrial Accident Prevention Association. A member of St. Paul's United church, Preston, and Trinity United and Yonge Street United Churches while in Toronto. Mr. Shantz was keenly interested in civic affairs of Preston, since his return to the community 12, years ago. He was active at the time of Preston's Old Boys' Reunion and Jubilee in 1949, and was a keen promoter for organized commemoration of the municipality's 100th anniversary of incorporation this year. Surviving are his wife, Annie Bowman; three sons, Robin and Arnold Shantz, Preston, and Douglas Shantz, Montreal; two daughters, Mrs. Russell (Lois) Schrumm, Preston, and Marjorie, Hamilton; two sisters, Miss Minnie B. Shantz of San Diego, Calif., and Mrs. Leon Archibald of Minneapolis. Eight grandchildren also survive. The body is resting at the Stager-Pass Ltd. funeral home until Wednesday at 1 p.m., then at the St. Paul's United Church for service at 2: 30. Interment will be in Preston Cemetery,

Funeral services by Noah Stauffer and Daniel Wismer, at Berlin, from John 14: 2 and James 4: 14, after which the remains of the little one were laid to rest at Latschaw's meeting house near Manheim. Little Lydia was a bright little girl. She attended the Sunday school at Berlin. Just a little while before she died she asked her brothers and sisters to sing a hymn she had learned in Sunday school, "Home Bells are Ringing." This was her favorite hymn. God bless the bereaved parents, brothers, sisters, and her many friends.

Peacefully, in his sleep, Tuesday, Oct. 22, 1991, in his 99th year. Predeceased by his wife, Catherine in 1981 and son, Laverne in 1944, one grandson, Jimmy and three sisters, Esther Shantz, Nancy Gies and Ada Bristol. Survived by one daughter, Margaret and her husband, Merrald Kuehl, two sons, Stewart and has wife Hazel and Jack and his wife Denise, five grandchildren, Ann Margaret Sumner, Mark Kuehl, David, Douglas and Bob Wismer and six great-grandchildren. He was a charter member and an elder of Knox Presbyterian Church, secretary treasurer and business administrator of the Waterloo public school board, until his retirement in 1957, where he was affectionately known as “Pop” by many. Mr. Wismer’s family will receive friends at the Edward R. Good Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today (Wednesday). The funeral service will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church, on Thursday, at 2.30 p.m., with Rev. Brooke Ashfield officiating. Interment in Parkview cemetery, Waterloo.

CO of Former HLI, Robert Shantz Dies

PRESTON, Lt-Col Robert F. Shantz, 308 Dover St. N., Preston, died Monday, at Westminster Hospital, London, following, a lengthy illness. He was 64. Mr. Shantz was born in Preston and was affiliated with the; United Church. He joined the Highland Light Infantry of Canada when he was 18 years old. When war broke out in 1939, he was a major and chief recruiting officer for this district. He went overseas in 1941, and became commanding officer of the HLI in 1943, with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. He was invalided home in 1944, at which time he became; commanding officer of the Galt branch of the HLI. He held that position until 1946, when he was appointed postmaster of Preston. In 1956, he was forced to retire due to ill health. He was secretary-treasurer for 10 years of the Preston-Hespeler Rotary Club. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch for 35 years. He was president of the Postmasters Association for two years. Mr. Shantz was born in Preston and lived here all his life with the exception of his period of service overseas during the war. Surviving are his wife, the former Katherine Nolan, and four daughters; Mrs. Robert (Lexia) Hummel and Mrs. Denise (Mary) Debrusk, both of Preston; Mrs. Dean (Karen) Burgess of Galt and Cathy of Preston; one brother, Kenneth A. of Montreal; four sisters, Mrs. Frank (Margaret) McLatchy of Waterloo, Mrs. Edward (Dorothy) Aver of London, Mrs. Kenneth (Marie) Mills of Preston and Mrs. William (Ruth) Steurnagel of Florida and five grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers, Howard and Cyrus and one sister, Elizabeth. The body is at the Barthel-Stager Funeral Home, where service will be conducted, Thursday, at 2 p.m. Committal service will be in Preston Park Lawn Memorial chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Wednesday afternoon and evening.

It is with great sadness, the family of Lois Jean (Shantz) Schrumm announces her passing at home on November 16, 2011. Born in Toronto June 20, 1921, she moved to Preston, where she met and married Russell (Bummer) Schrumm (deceased 1985). Predeceased by her brothers Robin, Arnold and Douglas and one sister Marjorie Singleton. Left to mourn are her sons Jim (Christine) of B.C. and their children, Carmen (Garth) Letcher and Lisa (Troy) Gross. Also Ted (Judy) of Preston and their children, Matthew (Andrea) and Elizabeth (Terry) Scotland. AIso five great-grandchildren. She also leaves many nieces and nephews, who she was happy to visit with at her 90th birthday celebration, in June of this year. Lois was a long time employee of Union Gas. She also loved travelling with her husband and spent many enjoyable years at their trailer in Bayfield, Ont. At Lois's request there will be a private family service and no visitation

"At age 44, Anna Cameron was suddenly widowed, left with four dependent children in an era when there wasn't much support for single mothers.

'She was really under a lot of pressure', said her son, Roy Cameron, of Kitchener. 'She hadn't worked in 20 years...she was trained as a dietician but only worked briefly, then she got married'.

The death of her husband, Ewan, proved to be another hiccup in Anna's life, one that made her roll up her sleeves and make the best of things.

'When I look back, she must have felt so isolated', said Roy, who was proud of how his mother rose against adversity without complaint.

Born into a rural Mennonite family, Anna grew up speaking Pennsylvania Dutch, not learning English until grade school. In her memoirs she recounted a happy childhood full of the freedoms afforded adventurous children in rural areas.

Her family were Peter Shirk's descendants, a man described by the family as a 'prominent pioneer' in the Mennonite community. Her parents and others in the community had more progressive views on their faith than their ancestors and started Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church.

'They were a group that thought they should become more acculturated', said Roy.

Anna's mother encouraged the young to read, to let her imagination fly,and she graduated from the Macdonald Institute (Univ. of Guelph) the first in her family to do so.

When she was 12, Anna's father died, only two months after she started high school at the sprawling Kitchener Collegiate Institute, having moved from a one-room rural schoolhouse. In his eulogy, Roy talked about how difficult it was for Anna to grieve for her father and start a new school, but she did so with courage and determination.

As a young woman, Anna's life took another unexpected turn, something her pacifist Mennonite family might not have anticipated. She married a police officer. Roy once asked her why she would marry a Scottish Presbyterian who carried a gun, and she replied matter-of-factly, 'he was interesting'.

Anna was a woman of few words and not given to gushing but Roy things he rmarriage choice 'reflected her openness to life'.

Ewan was the deputy police chief in Kitchener when he died of a heart attack at age 49.

After his death, Anna was hired as a dietitian at KW Hospital, where she stayed until retirement, serving as asst. director. To Anna, creating a happy workplace for her staff was paramount, and maintaining a happy, cohesive family imperative.

'Once you were part of the family you were always part of the family',said Roy, recounting how his mother retained her closeness to her sons' former spouses.

Roy's ex-wife, Marguerite Cameron of Kitchener, agreed, explaining 'she continued to call me her daughter. That was important to her, that we maintain that relationship.'

Marguerite recalls the 1960s, when she first met Anna, a busy career mom. 'She was always very supportive and came to pitch in', she said. 'I looked up to her, as a role model'.

Anna's grandchildren were a particular delight, added Roy. 'Every year she'd have a Christmas event, grandchildren only. They'd play games, she'd get right on the floor and play with them'.

Anna, who never remarried, possessed an adventurous spirit, traveling the world after retirement. She usually went alone and was always keen to learn, to grow. She was equally interested in fitness and was a regular at the YMCA.

In the end, Anna died with the same dignity and independence that so coloured her life. She had returned home from a shopping trip when the stroke hit, but she was lucid enough to call 911 and instruct paramedics to come in the unlocked rear door. 'She was unconscious when they arrived', Roy said.

In his eulogy, Roy concluded his mother was 'heavy on deeds, light on words', that she was a woman to whom social justice and gender equality mattered. 'She gave us, her children, the remarkable gift of herself. Her most powerful guidance emerged from the example she set'. Until the end she was fully engaged in life.

Frank farmed for many years on his Ottawa Street farm and was active in many business ventures in the KW Area. As the daughter of a pastor and then as a pastor's wife, Ruby lived and served in various communities throughout Southern Ontario.
Visitation will be held at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Wednesday, February 9, 2011 from 12 noon to 12:45 p.m., followed by the service in the chapel at 1:00 p.m. A reception will immediately follow the service in the funeral home's Fireside Reception Room. WATERLOO, Ont. -- The University of Waterloo family is saddened today by the tragic loss of Lyle Hallman, one of the Kitchener-Waterloo community's leading philanthropists and a great friend of the University.

Over the last decade, Lyle Hallman and his family generously supported the University of Waterloo, beginning with a donation for an endowment in the UW Library.

Later, several large donations to the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences made possible, first the creation of the Lyle S. Hallman Institute for Health Promotion and, more recently, the expansion of that facility. The Institute sponsors research and outreach programs to promote healthy living.

"Lyle was a tremendous friend to the University of Waterloo and a joy to be with," said president David Johnston. "He appreciated the vital reasons for advancing research into the kinds of health-related areas engaged in by the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences."
"He took great delight in helping UW and the community and will be greatly missed. But his legacy as a community builder will endure," Johnston said.

Past president James Downey had many associations with Hallman. "The University has lost a splendid benefactor and our K-W community has lost one of its finest citizens. He combined great business acumen with an admirable social conscience. Along with others, I was delighted when he was admitted to the Order of Canada. I feel privileged to have known him."

June 10, 2003 Hallman sells rental empire.

Waterloo- ON - June 10, 2003 - It's the end of an era for the area's biggest landlords. Lyle and Wendy Hallman are getting out of the rental business. The basic, affordable block-style Hallman buildings that sprang up across the landscape over the decades and housed tens of thousands of people are being sold in one huge, multi-million-dollar real-estate deal. Wendy Hallman, 53 president of Hallman Property Management, confirmed yesterday that she and her husband Lyle, 81, are selling all of their more than 3,000 rental apartment units in 63 buildings. She wouldn't disclose the sum but it has been described as the biggest real-estate transaction ever for this area. The name of the buyer won't be made official until the superintendents have been informed. But it's known the deal is with an out-of-town company that owns apartment buildings in this area. The decision to sell the entire residential rental business came about quickly, Wendy Hallman said. When a buyer emerged who wanted all of the buildings, "that made it a very nice package," she said.

For more than 20 years, the Hallmans have lived in a unit in one of their apartment buildings in Waterloo. So, as of July 3, when the deal closes, "we'll be tenants for the first time," she said. Lyle Hallman described the sale as "a very successful ending to something I've been involved in for a lot of my life." It was the right deal at the right time, he said. But Hallman was adamant he has no intention of retiring, even if he is out of the rental business. He will still develop vacant properties for building lots and has office space on Victoria Street North to continue that part of the business. He also still owns a small commercial plaza and is busy with philanthropic endeavours. "I'll be in the office every day," he said. Wendy Hallman, who has worked for Lyle for 29 years and has run the property management side of the business in recent years, said "He still tires me out…I don't think he'll ever retire." Hallman's father was a general contractor in the Preston section of Cambridge. His business crashed in 1929. That didn't deter Lyle, who started his own business with $750 in 1945 after serving in the Second World War. He began by renovating buildings, then buying land and building houses.

He built his first apartment building in 1966 and kept on building. "I didn't know enough to stop," he said. The buildings sprung up not only in Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge and Guelph but also in smaller communities such as Elmira, New Hamburg, Fergus, Hanover, and Listowel. "We had millions of dollars of mortgage money in it but I just kept paying the mortgages down," Hallman said. The business grew until he had, at one point, about 4,000 units. His son, Tom, in Cambridge, started his own property management business and bought about 800 of the units. "Another son, Peter, was also prominent builder developer but died in a motorcycle accident in 1999. Hallman's daughter-in-law and two other children run seniors' homes. Hallman prided himself on building "housing for the masses." He built units geared to the average working person. The signature Hallman buildings are solid, square and basic yet clean and well maintained. "When I started, I had one thought in mind: There are more Chevrolets on this road than there are Cadillacs," Hallman said. Realtor John Whitney said Hallman has left a significant and lasting footprint in this area. "If you grew up in this area, chances are, you've lived in a Hallman building or you've had friends and family members who have lived in a Hallman building," Whitney said. "He didn't build the Taj Mahal but what he built was high quality and he maintained the buildings impeccably." As other investors were turning apartments into condominiums Hallman was adding to the area's rental housing stock. "He provided an infrastructure that allowed the region to grow," Whitney said. "It would be hard to get the employee base we have and get accommodation for those workers without the units he built. What he built is an important as a road network or an expressway."

Hallman's legacy is more than buildings. He's also been one of the area's most generous philanthropists. Recent donations include $1.5 million to the K-W Health Centre, $500,000 to the Fairview Mennonite Home in Cambridge, $500,000 for a pool that bears the Hallman name in Kitchener's Stanley Park area, and $1 million to the K-W Community Foundation. At a groundbreaking ceremony today, the Hallman's will launch an addition to the Lyle S Hallman Institute for Health Promotion, based at the University of Waterloo. Hallman said that with the proceeds from this sale, he will likely be able to do even more philanthropy. "I've got enough energy left to just keep going. There's a silver dollar at the end of every day," he said. He added that he does have a hobby outside his work; he's been an avid cross-stitcher for 25 years. "I always get up early (about 5 a.m.) and I can do an hour or two of sewing," he said. "I get a great satisfaction out of this because I don't have the TV on and I keep on sewing while I am thinking." Whitney said Hallman has shown people what one person can build. "I don't know of any more wonderful story than the Lyle Hallman story.

Dorothy was predeceased by an infant son, Cameron Ross; brothers, Edward and his wife Evelyn Shuh and Donald Shuh. Friends and relatives may call at the Mark Jutzi Funeral Home, 291 Huron St., New Hamburg today (Thursday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Friday, March 4, 2005 at Zion United Church, New Hamburg at 1: 00 p.m. with Pastor Bob Thaler officiating. Burial to follow in Wilmot Reformed Mennonite Cemetery, Baden. As expressions of sympathy donations may be made to Greenwood Court or Zion United Church.

SHUH, Donald C. - At K-W Hospital, on Monday, Sept. 2, 1991, age 68 years, of 106 Viewmont Close, Kitchener.

Mr. Shuh was born in Waterloo and was a son of the late Bella Shantz and Clayton Shuh. Until his retirement he farmed the family farm "Wavertree" at RR 1, Waterloo. He was very active in the farming community, serving as past president of the Waterloo County Junior Farmers, the Banner Counties Ayrshire Club and the Waterloo Cattle Breeders Association. He was a lifelong member of Emmanuel United Church, Waterloo and a member of the Kitchener Golden K Kiwanis Club.

Beloved husband of Jeanne B. (Kropf); loving father of Margaret and Bill Boyd of Parry Sound, Richard Shuh and his wife Linda Woolley of Port Colborne, Linda and Bob Boyd of Orillia, Karen and Don Couchie of Hamilton, Allan and Ethel Shuh of Cambridge, Larry and Corinna Shuh of Sheffield and Elizabeth and Brian Feil of Kitchener. Loving Pa to Heather Boyd-Moore and her husband Robert Moore of Ottawa, Ruth and Sarah Boyd, Jalna and Caroline Boyd, Laura Jeanne and Sandra Couchie, Matthew and Phillip Shuh, Laura, Sharon and Kevin McKeown, Amy Ann Shuh, Cameron and Rachel Fell. He is also fondly remembered by one brother, Edward Shuh and his wife Evelyn of Turo, N.S. and a sister, Dorothy and her husband Cameron Honderich of New Hamburg.

Cremation has taken place. Mr. Shuh's family received friends at the Edward R. Good Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo. A memorial service for friends and relatives will be held in Emmanuel United Church, 22 Bridgeport Rd. W., Waterloo, today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m., with Rev. Heidi Sievert and, Rev. Bill Boyd officiating. A graveside service for the interment of ashes will follow at Mount Hope cemetery, Waterloo, to which everyone is invited to attend.
