Joseph Shantz, "the youngest son of Isaac and Barbara (Reiff) Shantz, was born near Pottstown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, June 24, 1795. In May, 1808, his mother, with her three youngest children, David, Veronica, and Joseph, who was then only thirteen years of age, moved to Canada and arrived in Waterloo County in June. On the 21st or 22nd of the same month she took possession of her bush farm, being composed of part of lot No. 52, German Company's Tract. About six acres were cleared and cleaned and a log house put up, but this house was without roof and floor until their coming. The lumber was purchased in Galt and the first thing the party had to do on their arrival was to put on the board roof and lay the floor, and then the house was ready to move into. By four o'clock in the afternoon everything was put in its proper place and everybody felt happy and well at home except Joseph who stood outside the house and wept bitterly, being sick of the wild and romantic life and wishing himself home at Pottstown again. So much did he weep that his mother came out to speak words of comfort to him, upon which he said, 'O mother, what made you leave our beautiful home and come here where there is nothing but bush and flies? Why had you listen to Christian? (His brother who settled here in 1806 always spoke well of Waterloo) It is not at all as he used to say.' The mother, listening to her son's lamentable tale, said, 'Joseph, now do quit crying and come into the house with me or else I shall have homesick like you and begin to cry.' They both went into the house and that ended 'Homesick'. (This story Mr. Joseph Shantz related to the writer in the year 1869) Here he was raised and on July 8th, 1817, he was married to Catherine, daughter of Joseph and Barbara (Eby) Schneider. She was born February 12, 1799, and died September 15th, 1881. Soon after their marriage they moved on their farm, being composed of west half of lot No. 9, German Company's Tract, now occupied by their son, Moses. Here they resided until 1849 when they moved on the farm being composed of west half of lot No. 26, German Company's Tract, now in possession of his sons, Joseph and Menno. Here he built a dam and erected a sawmill and for quite a number of years did a large business in sawing during the spring months. After his sons, Joseph and Menno, were married, he divided his farm into two and gave each one about half, Joseph retaining the part with the old buildings and the sawmill. Here he died, March 19th, 1882, six months after the decease of his wife. They had a family of seven children"

SHANTZ.-In Wilmot, Ont., on the 14th of December, 1893, Simon Shantz. He was born May 15th, 1818, and arrived at the ripe old age of 75 years, 6 months and 29 days. In 1845 he was married to Judith Stauffer, whom he survived nearly 32 years. He was the father of 4 sons and 5 daughters, of whom 3 daughters preceded him. His funeral, which was largely attended, took place on the 17th of December. Buried in Geiger's cemetery. Funeral services by Moses S. Bowman in German from 2 Cor. 4: 17,18 and 5: 1, and Daniel Wismer in English from Philippians 1: 21. His friends mourn not as those who have no hope^.2a

SHANTZ - Moses Shantz was born on the 22nd of August 1819, about three miles north of Waterloo, Ont. On the 18th of March, 1819* he was married to the youngest daughter of the late Bro. Jacob C. Snyder, of Waterloo. He was a member of the Mennonite church since his youth. Deceased was afflicted for about 6 years, and suffered much pain, which however was patiently borne through all the weary years, until his final release on the 17th of January 1897, at the ripe old age of 77 years, 4 months and 26 days. He leaves a sorrowing wife, six sons and six daughters, also thirty-six grandchildren to mourn the loss of a kind companion and father. His was the first death out of this large family. The funeral was held on the 20th from his late residence. Interment at Martin's M.H., where many relatives and friends assembled to pay their last tribute of love and respect to one who had been so dearly loved and highly esteemed in life. Funeral services by Amos Cressman and Noah Stauffer.

Death of Mrs. Springer

The many friends of Moses Springer, Esq., Sheriff of the county of Waterloo, will regret to learn of the bereavement he has suffered in the death of his wife, which took place at the family residence, Waterloo, on Monday last. In alluding to the sad event, the Berlin News says: - "Another of our old and highly respected citizens, Mrs. Sheriff Springer, died suddenly this morning. Mrs. Springer has been for several years an invalid, sometimes apparently near death's door but again and again rallied and got better. She had been considerably better than usual for some time past and very few had any idea that the end was near, though the nature of her disease - the dropsy - was such that it was felt that she might die any time. Deceased, who was a daughter of the late Joseph Shantz, was well known to the people of this county and highly esteemed by all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance. She was a devoted Christian, experiencing during all her sickness the fullest confidence of faith in her Saviour. She leaves a sorrowing husband and ten children, nearly all of whom are grownup and occupying good positions, two others having died when children."

On December 2nd, 1894, he was again married to Leah Musselman, widow of the late Absalom Martin. She was born May 3rd, 1844. After his first marriage he resided on the farm now in possession of Paul M. Martin, his son-in-law, where he resided until 1893, then moved on the old 'John Sitler Farm' where he still lives retired. In November, 1874, he was ordained at the David Eby Meeting House as deacon of the Mennonite Church for the Eby, Martin and Conestogo fields of labor, a position which he still holds. To him and his first wife were born eleven children"

Erb Street (David Eby) Mennonite Church

Early services which began around 1837 were held in private homes. Land at the corner of Erb Street and Hallman Road, where the present-day cemetery is located, was donated by David Eby Sr. on July 14, 1851; a red brick church known as David Eby's Church was built in the same year. The first minister in the new church was Jacob M. Oberholtzer who served from 1852 to 1874. He was followed by Elias Schneider (1874-1889), Jonas Snider (1892-1900), Newton Weber (1921-1923), and Noah Hunsberger (1923-1929).
Due to a difference of opinion in the David Eby congregation, Sunday School classes were held at first in a private home, that of Levi Groff, beginning in 1887. The dissension which resulted culminated in a division in the church in 1889; the minister, Elias Schneider, and the deacon, Menno S. Shantz, left the church and joined with the Old Order Mennonites of Woolwich Township. The following year, 1890, saw the commencement of "Edification Meetings", which were held in the homes of members of the David Eby congregation. These meetings later became the Young People's Bible Meetings.
By the beginning of the twentieth century, it was recognized that the church building was either in need of repair or in need of complete replacement. Consideration was given to building a new church on the same site or on a site on King Street North. A decision was made to accept from Samuel S. Snider the donation of a parcel of land which was also on Erb Street, but nearer town. Excavation of the foundation for the new church began in the Spring of 1902. A dedication service was held on August 17, 1902. A parsonage was built in 1929 on land donated by Herbert Snider, the son of Samuel Snider. The church building was renovated and enlarged in 1949-1950; a dedication service was held on April 9, 1950. Further renovations were made in 1974.

SNIDER. SUSANNAH, daughter of the late Simon SHANTZ, and widow of the late Solomon Snider, was born Apr. 6, 1846; died in Waterloo Co., Ont., at the home of Oliver D. Snider, Dec. 30, 1932; aged 86 y. 8 m. 22 d. She was married to Solomon Snider in October, 1897, who predeceased her 3 years ago, 1 daughter Angeline (Mrs. Jacob Musselman) also predeceased her. She leaves 4 children (Mrs. Alvin Shantz, Addison and Oliver of Elmira, and Irvin of Guernsey, Sask.), 16 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren by her foster family relation. The funeral took place from the home of Oliver D. Snider to Elmira Mennonite Church for services where she was a faithful member. Burial in adjoining cemetery. Services were conducted by Bishops Jonas Snider and Moses Brubacher. Texts, Job 14: 14 and Prov. 4: 18.

Schmidtt. - Catherine Shantz, beloved wife of Jacob B. Schmitt, was born Sep. 28, 1847. She was married Oct. 30, 1886. This union was blessed with 3 children (2 predeceased). She died, after a short illness, at her home near Baden, Ont., Oct. 16, 1924; aged 77 y. 18 d. "Shantz.-Death came as a welcome relief to Bro. Jonathan. Shantz of Carstairs, Alta., who passed away Dec. 14, 1914; aged 65 y. 8 m. 28 d. The deceased was born March 16, 1849, in Waterloo Co. Ont., where he grew to manhood and on Oct. 27, 1876, was married to Caroline Bingeman. To this union were born 9 children, 2 of them having died while quite young. The remaining ones are in the immediate vicinity and at home. In 1901 he moved with his family to a farm near Carstairs, Alberta, where he has since resided to the time of his death. He has been a member of the Mennonite Church for quite a number of years, and when health permitted was seldom missing at the regular services.

Funeral services conducted by N. R. Weber, J. K. Lehman, and N. B. Stauffer, on Dec. 16 at the West Zion Church, near Carstairs, Alta."

Jonathan Shantz's Dam.

In reference to the general topography of the village of Winterbourne in my last letter I omitted mention of the dam which confines the waters of Cox's Creek. It is the property of Mr. Jonathan Shantz, and contributes the power that operates his saw mill and chopping machine. It is undoubtedly one of the largest confined bodies of water in Waterloo county. The village derives advantages from it in more ways than one. While it adds considerably to the picturesqueness of the village it affords good fishing for the inhabitants thereof when the season is on. In the spring it is alive with chubs, suckers, red fins and bass. The latter abound in large number and many are often caught weighing from three to four pounds. Its generous owner permits free access to it by the public, and consequently the average villager whose beef or pork supply has become diminished or who feels the want of a change from that sort of diet can in a short time with hook and line procure choice specimens for the frying pan. The law prohibiting the catching of bass at this season of the year was the only obstacle that prevented your correspondent from making the attempt to land a few of the big fellows to form a savory feast for the table of the editor of the CHRONICLE.

In addition to this advantage afforded to the village Mr. Shantz is the most prominent in giving it some industrial life. He was born near St. Jacobs, March 16, 1849, and is a son of Simon Shantz, Sr. When he was about a year old his parents moved from his birth place to Wilmot where they lived about 45 years He purchased the saw mill here in 1895 from his brother Ezra, who had purchased it from one David Clemens, and has since added a cider and chopping mill. The saw will has a capacity of producing about 8,000 feet of lumber per day, the chopper 200 bags per day and the cider mill about 2,000 gallons per day. He also owns a farm of twenty acres near the village, from which he derives plenty of the necessaries of life for his family. He has been in some way connected in the operation of a saw-mill since he was fourteen years of age, and it is altogether likely that he will follow that vocation as long as he lives, or at least while the timber continues to hold out. Mr. Shantz was married about twenty-two years ago to Miss Caroline, daughter of Mr. John Bingeman, of near Washington, Nine children have been born to them, two of whom are dead. They are of the Mennonite faith and Reform in politics. The family lives in one of the venerable landmarks of the village. It is the old stone tavern which was built in 1836 by the late John Tyson, who was its landlord for two or three years and afterwards was kept by Henry Wenglin and others. It was a famous resort for the travelling public years ago. It is a substantial stone structure, but save its convenient location near the public highway, it does not show signs of having once been a public house. Mr. Shantz is a popular citizen and a man entitled to the respect and esteem of all who meet him or have business transactions with him.

Mr. J. S. Shantz, aged 83, passed away at his home, Fisher's Mills, on Sunday, Oct. 1. Mr. Shantz was a widely known citizen and one deeply interested in religion and philanthropic activities. There survive two sons and one daughter, Edwin of Hespeler, Junia at home and Mrs. Sydney Shantz of Kitchener. The funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 3rd, from his home at Fisher's Mills. Rev. S. M. Kanagy of Blair and Bishop C. F. Derstine, Kitchener, officiated. The remains were interred in Wanner's cemetery. Casket bearers were Moses B. Shantz.-Simon Stauffer Shantz was born near Baden, Ont., Oct. 8, 1856. In 1887 he was married to Carolina Christener. Their family consisted of four sons, one having preceded him to the glory world. During a period of extended illness he saw the necessity of being right with God. On March 15, he accepted Christ as his Savior and was received into the Church by water baptism. During his short Christian experience he gave definite evidence of forgiven sins and peace with God. He passed to his eternal reward on March 23, 1926, aged 69 y. 5 m. 15 d. He is survived by his sorrowing companion and three sons. Funeral service at the Geiger Church, in charge of Brethren Manasseh Hallman and Curtis C. Cressman. Interment in the adjoining cemetery.

SALE OF DURHAMS - Mr. Tilman S. Shantz, who lives a few miles north of Waterloo, is one of the most progressive and prosperous farmers in this section. He takes great pride in raising thoroughbred stock. Recently he sold two thoroughbred Durham calves to Mr. Jacob Hux, of Marlborough township, near St. Thomas, for fifty and one hundred dollars, their ages being three and eight months respective'y. Shantz - Aaron, was born 3 miles north of Waterloo, March 3, 1851; died Sept. 28. 1943; aged 92 y. 6 m. 25 d. He was married to Leah Snider who predeceased him 2 years ago. Surviving are 2 sons, Herbert and Ephraim, and a daughter, Sabina (Mrs. Urias Snider), all of Waterloo. One daughter, Lucina, died a little over 7 years ago. Nine grandchildren and 21 greatgrandchildren also survive. Bro. Shantz in his early years after his conversion united with the Mennonite Church and lived a faithful devoted Christian life until the Lord called him home. He attended church services as long as his strength enabled him. Funeral services were conducted by Bro. J. B. Martin at the Erb Street Mennonite Church, Waterloo, Ont.

Shantz.-Menno S., son of the late Moses and Susannah Shantz, was born near Waterloo, Ont., Oct. 11, 1852; died at the Kitchener & Waterloo Hospital Jan. 4, 1937; aged 84 y. 2 m. 24 d. On April 12, 1876, he was United in holy marriage to Lydia Bricker who remains to mourn her loss. This union was blessed with 3 sons and 1 daughter (Abner of Waterloo, Melvin of Detroit, Mrs. C. F. Gibbs of Toronto, and Pearlous who predeceased his father in death 26 years ago). 4 grandchildren also survive, along with 3 brothers and 3 sisters. He was baptized and received into Mennonite Church fellowship a few weeks before his death. We praise the Lord for his testimony of faith before he passed on. Funeral services were held at Ratz and Bechtel Funeral Home. Services conducted by J. B. Martin. Text, John 6: 68.

Shantz. - Franklin Shantz, son of Moses and Susannah Shantz, was born Sept. 14, 1856; died at his home in Waterloo, Ont., Jan. 1, 1929; aged 72 y. 3 m. 17 d. He was married to Leah Groff who predeceased him nearly five years ago. He united with the Mennonite Church in early life in which faith he died. He was of a quiet disposition, but we believe his walk and conduct spoke louder than his words. He expressed himself as being ready to meet his Lord and had a desire to depart. He leaves 3 sons, 3 daughters, 1 adopted daughter, 26 grandchildren, 4 brothers, and 5 sisters, besides a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted at the home by Bro. Noah Hunsberger and at the Waterloo Mennonite Church by Bros. Jesse Martin and Jonas Snider.

Shantz. -- Amos, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Moses Shantz, was born in Waterloo Twp., Ont., Feb. 2, 1859; died Oct. 14, 1949, after a brief illness; aged 90 y. 8 m. 12 d. His wife (the former Jemima Snyder) predeceased him in 1934. One daughter (Lena) died at the age of thirteen. Surviving are 2 children (Aldred, Waterloo, Ont.; and Edna - Mrs. Oscar Martin, also of Waterloo), one brother (Allan, Oshawa, Ont.), 3 sisters (Mrs. Frank Shuh, Waterloo, Ont.; Mrs. Benjamin Horst, Breslau, Ont.; Mrs. Christian Brubacher, Preston, Ont.), 4 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. He was converted as a young man and served the Lord faithfully, being a loyal member of the Mennonite Church. Funeral services were conducted by Clare Shantz and J. B. Eby.-Susannah, daughter of the late Moses and Susannah Shantz and widow of the late Henry B. Eby, was born on the old homestead north of Waterloo, Ont., Feb. 15, 1861; died at the home of her son (Edwin S. Eby) on Sunday, Oct. 18, 1936; aged 75 y. 8 m. 3 d. She passed away rather suddenly from an attack of pneumonia following a week's illness. She is survived by 3 sons (Oliver of Guernsey, Sask.; Edwin S. and Irvin S. of Kitchener), 4 daughters (Mrs. Edwin Bowman of Guernsey, Sask.; Mrs. Gordon Weber and Florence, Kitchener; Ella, R. N., of Woodstock), and 17 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. She is also survived by 3 sisters (Mrs. Christian Brubacher and Mrs. Frank Shuh of Waterloo, Mrs. Benj. Horst of Breslau) and 4 brothers (Menno of Kitchener; Aaron, Amos, and Allen of Waterloo). She was predeceased by Mrs. Henry Groff, Minnesota; Mrs. David Hoffer, Elmira; Tilman Shantz, and Frank Shantz of Waterloo. She was a faithful member of the Sterling Avenue Mennonite Church. The funeral was held from the home of her son (Edwin Eby), thence to the Sterling Ave. Menn. Church, Kitchener. Services were conducted by U. K. Weber, pastor of the church. Interment in the First Mennonite Cemetery.

Brubacher, -- Emma, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Moses Shantz, was born Feb. 2, 1869, in Waterloo Twp., Ont.; died July 20, 1951; aged 82 y. 5 m. 18 d. On March 3, 1920, she was united in marriage to Christian Brubacher, who predeceased her on Dec. 19, 1935. Surviving are one stepson (Jacob Brubacher, Kitchener, Ont.), one brother (Allan, Oshawa, Ont.) and 2 sisters (Mrs. Catharine Shuh, Waterloo, Ont., and Mrs. Lydia Ann Horst, Breslau, Ont.). She confessed her Saviour during revival meetings held by Noah Stauffer and Solomon Gehman in 1885 and remained a faithful witness for Him until death. Funeral services were conducted by J. B. Martin and Clair Shantz at the Erb Street Mennonite Church in Waterloo.

Horst, -- Lydia Ann, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Moses Shantz, was born Oct. 18, 1874, in Waterloo Twp., Ont.; passed away at her residence, Breslau, Ont., Aug. 12, 1951, after a lengthy illness; aged 76 y. 9 m. 24 d. Her husband (Benjamin G. Horst) predeceased her in 1949. In early life she accepted Christ as her Saviour. She united with the Mennonite Church and was for a number of years a member of the Cressman congregation. She leaves 2 sons (Clifford, Fort St. John, B.C.; and Leonard, Newbury, Ont.), 3 daughters (Mrs. Emma Morrison, Breslau, Ont.; Ina Horst, Kitchener Ont.; and Mrs. Ion Weber, Kitchener), one brother (Allan, Oshawa, Ont.), one sister (Mrs. Catherine Shuh, Waterloo, Ont.), and 11 grandchildren. The funeral was held Aug. 15 at the Cressman Mennonite Church near Breslau. Burial was made in the Snyder Mennonite Cemetery, Bloomingdale, Ont. Text: Rev. 2: 10. Officiating ministers were E. Weber. - Menno S. Weber was born March 20, 1851; died at his home near Waterloo, Ont., Oct. 10, 1933; aged 82 y. 6 m. 20 d. On Jan. 11, 1874, he married Hannah Bingeman, who survives. To them were born 2 children (Ida of Kent, Ohio, and Irvin near Waterloo). There are 9 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. In 1885 he accepted Christ as his Saviour and joined the Mennonite Church. He always attended church services regularly and was interested in all the activities of the Church. Within the last few years he gradually failed in health but never suffered any pain. The funeral services were conducted at the house by Bro. Jonas Snider (Text, Psa. 23) and at the church by Bros. M. M. Brubacher and J. B. Martin. Texts, Rev. 14: 13, Psa. 27: 4, and Acts 13: 36. Burial in the nearby cemetery.

Weber, Noah S., was born near Waterloo, Ont., Jan. 11, 1868; died at Waterloo, April 16, 1963; aged 95 y. 3 m. 5 d. His first wife, Catherine Brubacher, his second wife, Ellen Stauffer, and his third wife, Adah Burkholder, all preceded him in death. Surviving are 3 daughters (Nora-Mrs. Ivan Groh, Mary-Mrs. Gordon Snyder, and Eva-Mrs. Angus Snider), one son (Lorne), 2 stepsons, 17 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. One daughter preceded him in death. He was ordained as deacon for the Erb Street Church in 1908, and served until be retired in 1944. He also served on the Conference Welfare Board, and loyally supported other work of the church. Funeral services were conducted at the church, April 18, by J. B. Martin.

Noah S. Weber, 95, of 147 Simeon St. died at his home Tuesday following a short ill- ness.
A retired farmer, he was a native of Waterloo Township.

Mr. Weber had been a deacon of Erb Street Mennonite Church, Waterloo, since 1908. He was the last surviving member of a family of 13.

His marriage to the former Adah Burkholder, who predeceased him, took place at Markham, Ont., in 1929. Two previous wives, Catherine Brubacher and Ellen Stauffer, also predeceased him.

Surviving are one son, Lorne Weber of Waterloo; two stepsons, Orval Clemmer, Royal Oak, Mich., and Gordon Clemmer, Ottawa; three daughters, Mrs. Ivan (Nora) Groh of St. Catharines, Mrs. Gordon. (Mary) Snyder, RR 1, Guelph, and Mrs. Angus (Eva) Snider of Waterloo, and 17 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.. One daughter, Mrs. Addison (Hilda) Erb predeceased him in 1929.

The body is at the Edward R. Good Funeral Home, Waterloo, until Thursday at 12:30 p.m. when removal will be made to Erb St. Mennonite Church, Waterloo, for service at 2:30 p.m.. Rev. J. B. Martin will officiate. Interment will be in the Erb Street Mennonite Cemetery.

Donations to the Ontario Mennonite Board will be accepted as expressions of sympathy.

FATAL ACCIDENT

On Friday evening last a melancholy sequel, to the removal of our bridges, by the late freshet, took place here. At about ten o'clock of that evening a man by the name of Jacob Kauffman, aged about 60 years, a resident of the neighboring village of Lexington, while endeavoring to make his way home with a horse and buggy, himself being intoxicated, unfortunately forced the animal over the obstruction placed in the road to the Western side of where the bridge had been placed over Mill Creek on the Bridgeport road, and down the steep bank of the Creek into the latter, a distance of eight or ten feet perpendicularly. The noise of the fall attracted the attention of Mr. Menno Springer and Mr. James Fairbairn, who were in a neighboring house at the time. They rushed to the spot and after a little search saw the unfortunate man floating down the stream almost completely covered by the water. Mr. Fairbairn sprang in and with the assistance of Mr. Springer dragged him to shore in a state of insensibility. Dr. Walden was summoned and in a short time succeeded in restoring the man to life, He was then carried to Mr. Hewitt's hotel, his wet clothing removed, dry blankets substituted, and himself put contginous to a warm fire. He now raised so rapidly that in a short time the natural temperature of his body was restored and every appearance indicated that in a few hours he would be as hale as ever. A man was put in charge of him (he being able at this time to talk and sit up,) and the crowd dispersed. About two o'clock on Saturday morning, however, symptoms indicating some severe internal injury set in and in a few minutes thereafter he was a corpse

An inquest was held by Dr. Walden, Coroner, on Saturday, when the following verdict was returned: "That the deceased Jacob Kauffman came his death by driving into Mill Creek while in a state of intoxication, and that from the evidence adduced no blame can attach to any other than himself,"

We understand a report has been circulated by some evil disposed person, which reflects on the mode of treatment to which the deceased was subjected. Having heard the evidence adduced, we can state unequivocally that from the report of the witnesses, the man did not suffer from neglect but was treated successfully as far as the effects of the water were concerned. Reaction had fully set in and there remained not the least doubt in the minds of those present, that death was caused by some internal injury received by the fall into the Creek.

The doctor's orders with regard to the disposal of the patient during the night were strictly obeyed, and in our opinion there are no grounds for the charges of inhumanity which have brought against the hotel keeper, in whose house the death occurred.

MOSES S. SPRINGER DEAD Well Known Associated Press Operator Victim of Heart Failure

Moses S. Springer, night operator for the Associated Press in this city, died shortly after midnight. Mr. Springer had been in the employ of the Associated Press, in Sacramento and Los Angeles, since 1894, and was well known to newspapermen and telegraphers on the coast. Before coming West he was in the employ of the Associated Press for many years in Chicago, where he had a wide acquaintance. While heart failure was the direct cause of his death, Mr. Springer had been in poor health tor nearly a year, and it is believed the confinement and severe character of his work materially aided in hastening the end. Deceased was forty-two years old at the time of his death and leaves a wife and three young children.

Joseph S. Shantz - Following a lengthy illness, Joseph S. Shantz, age 66, 61 Cameron street north, Kitchener, died Saturday. A son of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac B. Shantz, deceased was born in Waterloo County on June 21, 1872. He was married to Martha E. Snyder at Elmira in September, 1902. Mr. Shantz was a well-known furniture traveller [sic] for many years. He was a member of Bethany Mennonite church. Surviving are his widow, three sons, Lorne I., and Harold J., both of Woodstock, and Rev. Ward of Toronto and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Monday to Bethany Mennonite church with interment in Woodland Cemetery. Rev. C. N. Good, pastor of the church, officiated.

Shantz. - Lydia Gingerich Shantz was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Mar. 10, 1857; died July 15, 1928; aged 71 y. 4 m. 5 d. She was married to Abraham B. Gingerich in Sept. 1877. This union was blessed with ten children, one child (Israel) having predeceased her when he was two years old. She leaves a kind and affectionate mother, a sorrowing husband, and nine children (Cyrus, Mrs. Addison Snider, Elmira, Ira, Abram, Mrs. Abram Snider, Mrs. Henry Knoll, Addison, Irvin, and Angus), and 16 grandchildren.

"A precious one from us is gone,
A voice we loved is still;
A place is vacant in our home
Which can never be filled."
Funeral services were held in the Elmira Church, conducted by Brethren Oliver Snider, Jonas Snider, and Bro. Moses Brubaker.

MARTIN. - Mary Ann, daughter of the late Mr. And Mrs. Joseph Shantz, was born in Waterloo Twp., Ont., Oct. 11, 1870; died at the Kitchener and Waterloo Hospital, Ont. June 16, 1948; aged 77 y. 8 m. 5 d. She was married to Enoch Martin, who predeceased her ten years ago. Surviving are 3 sons (Cleason, Oscar, and Melvin, all of Waterloo, Ont.), 7 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Elmira Mennonite Church, where funeral services were held, in charge of Jesse B. Martin and Oliver D. Snider. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.

Shantz. --- Josiah, son of Bro. and Sister Menno S. Shantz, was born Jan. 26, 1861; died at his home in German Mills, Ont., Jan. 5, 1940; aged 78 y. 11 m. 20 d. He was ill for only a week. Death was caused by heart trouble. He was married to Sofiana Rudy Nov. 25, 1884. He was a member of the Strasburg Mennonite Church. Surviving are his wife, 1 daughter (Mrs. David Bearinger, German Mills),1 son (Alvin, of Waterloo), 4 sisters (Mrs. Christian Martin, Mrs. Manasseh Martin, and Mrs. Paul Martin of Waterloo; Mrs. Menno Steckle and Mrs. John Steckle of Zurich), and 6 grandchildren. Two brothers and 1 sister predeceased him. Funeral services were held Jan. 8, private at the home and public services at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener. Interment in the First Mennonite Cemetery. Funeral services were in charge of Bro. Simon Martin and Jesse Martin.

Mrs. Lydiann Martin, 93, of St. Jacobs, died, Thursday, June 4, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Milton Bauman, RR 3, Waterloo, after a lengthy illness.

Born in Waterloo township, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Menno Shantz. Mrs. Martin was the last surviving member of her family.

Her husband, the late Paul M. Martin, died in 1937.

Surviving are four sons, Elam of Kitchener, Absalom of Waterloo and Alvin and Paul of RR 3, Waterloo; two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Martin, RR 1, Elmira, and Mrs Milton (Sussanna) Bauman, RR 3, Waterloo; 26 grand-children and 50 great-grandchildren. Two sons and one daughter predeceased her.

The body rested at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor, Elmira, until Saturday at 4 p.m. when removal was made to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Milton Bauman, for the service Sunday at 1:30 p.m. A public service followed at Martin's Mennonite meeting house. Burial was the adjoining cemetery.

Shantz.-Elias Shantz was born Sept. 11, 1867; died Aug. 21, 1937; aged 69 y. 11 m. 9 d. In October, 1891, he was united in marriage to Catharine Sitler, who predeceased him Apr. 22, 1898. In February, 1900, he was united in marriage to Rebecca Lichty who predeceased him 3 years ago. For a few years he suffered from a weak heart which caused his death. He bore his suffering patiently and his sudden departure came as a great shock to his family. He leaves 2 sons, 7 daughters, 47 grandchildren, 2 brothers, 5 sisters, and a large relationship and many friends. He was a faithful member of the Mennonite Church for many years and was always ready to give a helping hand where someone was in need. The funeral was conducted by Brethren B. B. Shantz and H. W. Stevanus.

And then we'll understand."

HESPELER, Edwin S. Shantz, 74, died today at his home on Edward St., Preston. He was born in Wilmot Township and farmed near Hespeler, for 40 years, before he retired in 1941 and became associated with his brother, in the Speed Flour Mill. He is survived by his wife, the former Evelyn Howell. His first wife, Ida Martin, predeceased him in 1938. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. R. S. Evans, Puslinch Township; one brother, Junia Shantz, Fisher Mills; one sister, Mrs. Sydney Shantz, Kitchener and 12 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday, at 2 p.m., at the residence and at 2: 30 p.m., at Wanner Mennonite Church, with interment, in the Wanner Cemetery. The body now rests at his late residence.

In his teen age he was converted and became a member of the Wanner Church where he was an active member until the time of his death. In 1902 he was married to Ida Martin who predeceased him in 1939. He married Evelyn Howell in 1941. Surviving him are his wife, Evelyn, one daughter (Mrs. R. S. Evans, Hespeler, Ont.), 12 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, one brother (Junia Shantz), and one sister (Mrs. Sydney Shantz, Kitchener, Ont.). Funeral services were held Feb. 4 at the home and at the Wanner Church with Merle Shantz officiating, assisted by M. G. McFarlane, pastor of the United Church of Canada in Hespeler. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery

At Fairview Mennonite Home, 799 Concession Rd., Cambridge, on Monday evening, March 14, 1988, A. Junia Shantz, in his 97th year. Beloved husband of the late, Clara (Bechtel) Shantz (1984). The late Mr. Shantz, was predeceased by two brothers, Edwin and Hermice and is survived by a sister-in-law, Mrs. Evelyn Shantz of St. George and a family friend, Helen Shantz of Waterloo. Mr. Shantz, was born in Waterloo township, the son of the late Joseph and Mattie (Snyder) Shantz and was an active life-long member of the Wanner Mennonite Church. He was a pioneer in the formula feed business and operated the Fisher Mill Feed Store, in the Cambridge (Hespeler) area, for many years. He was a past president of the South Waterloo Agricultural Society. The family will receive friends at the Nelson Funeral Home, 1766 Franklin Blvd., Cambridge, on Wednesday afternoon and evening, from 2: 30-4: 30 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Thursday afternoon, March 17, at 2: 30 p.m., in the Wanner Mennonite Church, with Rev. Paul Martin officiating. Interment Wanner cemetery.

Flash from the Past: Busy feed mill was at Fisher Mills

For much of the 20th century the story of the Hespeler-area hamlet of Fisher Mills ran parallel to the story of its mill and the mill's longtime owner, A.J. Shantz.

Last week's "mystery" photo showing Hespeler Feed & Farm Supplies in the 1960s inspired dozens of calls and emails from readers with ties to the hamlet, named for Jacob Fisher, a Chilligo Creek mill operator in the early 1800s. Fisher Mills was also the birthplace in 1841 of Waterloo distiller Joseph Seagram. His parents owned a hotel there.

The old mill, just east of Beaverdale Road and two kilometres from the heart of Hespeler (now Cambridge), was a place of business until 1990. It's now a home, backing on Maple Grove Road.

In 1932, when he was 40, Ammon Junia (A.J.) Shantz became owner of the feed mill his father Joseph Shantz began there in 1890. Powered by water from a man-made pond, the Shantz mill was built on the foundation of an earlier flour mill that in 1888 was dismantled and moved to Birtle, Man. One of A.J. Shantz's first steps as owner was to add a diesel engine.

Shantz grew up working at the mill but also trained at the Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph in the 1920s. He lived with his parents on a farm that is partly visible on the far left in the photo.

Shantz is remembered as an honest, kind and astute man who kept pace with changing business realities. A Shur-Gain franchisee, producing livestock feeds was his key focus. But his mill also did seed cleaning, grain chopping and saw milling. It made apple cider, fruit juice, molasses and apple butter (the latter venture was directed by his mother, Mattie), plus its own brand of dog food, promoted by a litter of 16 Irish setters, Shantz acquired.

A description in the 1957 volume of the Waterloo Historical Society noted: "Mr. Shantz also deals in fertilizers, fencing, twine and many other lines of farm supplies. An electrical appliance shop stocking deep freezers, TV sets etc. has recently been added to his establishment."

For 22 years Shantz also owned the Speed Mill north of Hespeler. It was both a flour and feed mill.

Lois Anne Snyder of Waterloo recognized the Shantz Mill photo. She grew up in Fisher Mills and her grandfather and father, both named Alf Tuletzki, worked for Shantz, as did her sister Betty, who had a job in the mill office.

"We used to go down there sometimes with my dad in the mornings," Snyder recalled. One of the first things her father would do was go to the basement and start an engine that would get all sorts of belts and pulleys moving throughout the building.

Don Baker of Kitchener phoned to say his father, Art, bought farm supplies at the mill and worked there in the 1960s and 1970s. He is certain the car in the photo is his father's 1962 Mercury.

Bill Bartels of Kitchener has a special reason to recall A.J. Shantz. In 1924, his grandfather Jacob J. Bartels, arrived in Waterloo with his wife and four children, along with other Russian Mennonites who had fled persecution in their homeland. When they stepped from the train, a man shouted "family of six" and A.J. Shantz stepped up to say he could offer them temporary housing.

The Bartels family lived briefly at the Shantz farm. Jacob later acquired a Niagara-area fruit farm that he ran with Bartel's father, Jacob Jr., who raised his own family in Hespeler.

Bartels said he can recall going to Shantz's mill as a boy with his father in the 1940s with apples and tomatoes from the Niagara farm.

"I was pretty impressed with the idea that you could squeeze a tomato and get juice that you would put in a can."

When Shantz retired in 1970, he sold the mill to Howard Cressman, who had grown up in Shantz's home, where his mother was the housekeeper. Cressman incorporated as Chilligo Farm Supply, Ltd. and for a time had Bill Miller as a co-owner.

They made many innovations, but manufacturing was gradually discontinued. The mill became a retail site called The Feed Store.

Ron Hattle of Elora phoned to say his father, Charles, worked for Cressman in the 1970s and in retirement wrote about the mill.

From his journal: "The staff at the time was Howard Cressman, Stewart McDonald, Alf Tuletzki, Art Baker, Karol Warenholtz and Charlie Hattle. Shortly after when things got going with the pellets, they hired Guy Hawshaw. Alf's daughter was the bookkeeper."

Shantz was a very visible figure in Fisher Mills and at the nearby Wanner Mennonite Church. In the late 1930s he and his farmhand, Wilfred Becker, took two Percheron horses to Toronto and won a prize at the Royal Winter Fair.

One curious aspect of Shantz's life is that he and his wife, Clara, wed in 1918, lived apart for years, she in Kitchener and he at Fisher Mills. Their only child had passed away in 1921 while still a tot.

Miriam Cressman of Cambridge knew the couple well as the wife of Howard Cressman, who died in 2004. Clara and A.J. were fond of each other, she said, but as young people were pressured by their strong-willed mothers. Clara's mother insisted her daughter live with her in Kitchener. But A.J. found it hard to run the mill from so far away. As well, his own mother wanted him at Fisher Mills.

In later life the couple did live together again at Fisher Mills. Clara died in 1984, A.J. in 1988.

Lyndon Schantz

Funeral services for a former New Hamburg man, Lyndon Schantz, were held at Kennedy's Funeral Home, Essex, Feb 4. Mr. Schantz, who was 74 years of age, died Feb. 1. He had lived at RR 2, South Woodslee for the past 10 years and had retired from General Motors Corp.

He was a member of the Windsor Sportsman's Club, Brooker Baptist Church, and a former member of Nith Lodge number 96, New Hamburg.

He was predeceased by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Simon Schantz and is survived by one brother, Melvin, of 222 West Houstonia, Royal Oak, Mich. Mr. Schantz was single.

Harvey H. Shantz

A resident of this district for many years, Harvey H. Shantz, 65, died at his home on the Elmira Highway this morning. The deceased, the oldest son of the late Tilman S. Shantz, was born on the Shantz homestead on the Elmira highway. He was a member of the Evangelical church, St. Jacobs.

Surviving are his widow, the former Sarah Weber, two sons, Earl and Lorne, one daughter Ella, six brothers, Alvin H., Alfred E., Urias A., angus M., Walter W., and Ezra E., two sisters Elsie L., and Mrs. Jacob F. Kercher. One daughter predeceased him in infancy.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock from the late residence, two and a half miles north of Waterloo, on the Elmira highway, to St. Jacobs Evangelical church with interment in the St. Jacobs' cemetery.

ALFRED SHANTZ
Alfred Shantz, 84, of Elmira, died in K-W Hospital Wednesday, April 30.
A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Tilman Shantz, he was born in Maryborough Township and moved to the Waterloo district, where he lived until 1918. After farming near Alma for 18 years, he moved to Grimsby and retired to Elmira 17 years ago. He was a member of Elmira Evangelical United Brethran Church.
His wife the former Adeline Coote, survives. Also surviving are two brothers, Walter of Fonthill and Urias of Kitchener; two sisters, Mrs. Jacob Kercher and Miss Elsie Shantz, both of Kitchener.
The body was at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor, Elmira, until Friday when it was removed to Elmira EUB Church for service at 2: 30 p.m. Burial was in Elmira Cemetery. The Rev. J. Wesley Siebert officiated.

Shantz, --Herbert, eldest son of the late Aaron and Leah (Snider) Shantz, was born Dec. 6, 1874; passed away at his home Feb.28, after a long illness; aged 80 y. 2 m. 22 d. Early in his youth he accepted Christ as his Saviour and became a member of the David Eby Church, and later the Erb Street Mennonite Church. On Dec. 12, 1900, he was united in marriage to Selina Shantz, Manheim, with whom he shared life's joys and sorrows for 54 years. Surviving him are his companion, 4 daughters, (Orpha-Mrs. Vernon Woolner, Kitchener; Lona-Mrs. Joseph Martin, Elimira; Erma-Mrs. Stanley Snider, Kitchener; and Wilma-Mrs. Martin Horst, Waterloo), 12 grandchildren, one great grandchild, one brother (Ephraim), and one sister (Mrs. Urias Snider, Waterloo). One sister preceded him in death in 1935. He was faithful Christian and always interested in the work of the church. Services were conducted at the Erb St. Mennonite Church, Waterloo, Ont., by Clare Shantz and J. B. Martin, with burial in the Erb Street Cemetery.

Beloved husband of the late Nellie Weber; dear father of Howard and his wife Katie Shuh of RR 2, Elmira and Arlene McDougall and her husband Smith of Smithville, Ont. Surviving are 2 sons (Elmer and Howard), 2 daughters (Mary-Mrs. Clare Cressman and Ruth-Mrs. Willis Cressman), 13 grandchildren, and one great granddaughter. He worshiped with and was a member of the Waterloo congregation all his life. Funeral services were held at the Erb Street Church, April 3, conducted by J. B. Martin.

Mrs. Lucinda Brubacher

Following a lingering illness, Mrs. Lucinda W. Brubacher, 72, died early Saturday at her residence, 41 Sheldon street north, Kitchener. She was born on October 2, 1866, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Stauffer. Deceased attended Bethany Mennonite Church. Her husband, John M. Brubacher, predeceased her in 1917. Surviving are two step-sons, Edwin Brubacher of Grimsby and Abraham Brubacher of Wakarusa, Ind., a daughter, Miss Violet Brubacher, two step-daughters, Mrs. (Rev.) J. S. Wood of Pontiac, Mich., and Mrs. Melvin Baer of Blair, three brothers, Ezra and Harvey Stauffer of Kitchener, and Oliver Stauffer of Didsbury, Alta., two sisters, Mrs. Solomon Gole of Bridgeport and Miss Ida Zinn of Baden.
