Menno S. Shantz, "was born April 16th, 1836. On November 9th, 1858, he was married to Elizabeth Schneider who was born November 29th, 1836, and died January 28th, 1893. On December 2nd, 1894, he was again married to Leah Musselman, widow of the late Absalom Martin. She was born May 3rd, 1844. After his first marriage he resided on the farm now in possession of Paul M. Martin, his son-in-law, where he resided until 1893, then moved on the old 'John Sitler Farm' where he still lives retired. In November, 1874, he was ordained at the David Eby Meeting House as deacon of the Mennonite Church for the Eby, Martin and Conestogo fields of labor, a position which he still holds. To him and his first wife were born eleven children"

Erb Street (David Eby) Mennonite Church

Early services which began around 1837 were held in private homes. Land at the corner of Erb Street and Hallman Road, where the present-day cemetery is located, was donated by David Eby Sr. on July 14, 1851; a red brick church known as David Eby's Church was built in the same year. The first minister in the new church was Jacob M. Oberholtzer who served from 1852 to 1874. He was followed by Elias Schneider (1874-1889), Jonas Snider (1892-1900), Newton Weber (1921-1923), and Noah Hunsberger (1923-1929).
Due to a difference of opinion in the David Eby congregation, Sunday School classes were held at first in a private home, that of Levi Groff, beginning in 1887. The dissension which resulted culminated in a division in the church in 1889; the minister, Elias Schneider, and the deacon, Menno S. Shantz, left the church and joined with the Old Order Mennonites of Woolwich Township. The following year, 1890, saw the commencement of "Edification Meetings", which were held in the homes of members of the David Eby congregation. These meetings later became the Young People's Bible Meetings.
By the beginning of the twentieth century, it was recognized that the church building was either in need of repair or in need of complete replacement. Consideration was given to building a new church on the same site or on a site on King Street North. A decision was made to accept from Samuel S. Snider the donation of a parcel of land which was also on Erb Street, but nearer town. Excavation of the foundation for the new church began in the Spring of 1902. A dedication service was held on August 17, 1902. A parsonage was built in 1929 on land donated by Herbert Snider, the son of Samuel Snider. The church building was renovated and enlarged in 1949-1950; a dedication service was held on April 9, 1950. Further renovations were made in 1974.

Shantz. --- Josiah, son of Bro. and Sister Menno S. Shantz, was born Jan. 26, 1861; died at his home in German Mills, Ont., Jan. 5, 1940; aged 78 y. 11 m. 20 d. He was ill for only a week. Death was caused by heart trouble. He was married to Sofiana Rudy Nov. 25, 1884. He was a member of the Strasburg Mennonite Church. Surviving are his wife, 1 daughter (Mrs. David Bearinger, German Mills),1 son (Alvin, of Waterloo), 4 sisters (Mrs. Christian Martin, Mrs. Manasseh Martin, and Mrs. Paul Martin of Waterloo; Mrs. Menno Steckle and Mrs. John Steckle of Zurich), and 6 grandchildren. Two brothers and 1 sister predeceased him. Funeral services were held Jan. 8, private at the home and public services at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener. Interment in the First Mennonite Cemetery. Funeral services were in charge of Bro. Simon Martin and Jesse Martin.

Mrs. Lydiann Martin, 93, of St. Jacobs, died, Thursday, June 4, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Milton Bauman, RR 3, Waterloo, after a lengthy illness.

Born in Waterloo township, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Menno Shantz. Mrs. Martin was the last surviving member of her family.

Her husband, the late Paul M. Martin, died in 1937.

Surviving are four sons, Elam of Kitchener, Absalom of Waterloo and Alvin and Paul of RR 3, Waterloo; two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Martin, RR 1, Elmira, and Mrs Milton (Sussanna) Bauman, RR 3, Waterloo; 26 grand-children and 50 great-grandchildren. Two sons and one daughter predeceased her.

The body rested at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor, Elmira, until Saturday at 4 p.m. when removal was made to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Milton Bauman, for the service Sunday at 1:30 p.m. A public service followed at Martin's Mennonite meeting house. Burial was the adjoining cemetery.

Shantz.-Elias Shantz was born Sept. 11, 1867; died Aug. 21, 1937; aged 69 y. 11 m. 9 d. In October, 1891, he was united in marriage to Catharine Sitler, who predeceased him Apr. 22, 1898. In February, 1900, he was united in marriage to Rebecca Lichty who predeceased him 3 years ago. For a few years he suffered from a weak heart which caused his death. He bore his suffering patiently and his sudden departure came as a great shock to his family. He leaves 2 sons, 7 daughters, 47 grandchildren, 2 brothers, 5 sisters, and a large relationship and many friends. He was a faithful member of the Mennonite Church for many years and was always ready to give a helping hand where someone was in need. The funeral was conducted by Brethren B. B. Shantz and H. W. Stevanus.

YATTON.\emdash Mr. Josiah Martin of Yatton passed away on Friday, April 2Ist from an attack of pneumonia. Mr. Martin had been in ill health for some time suffering from asthma and a weak heart. He was 56 years old and resided In this community for the past thirty-one years. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Tilman Martin, from near Waterloo.

He is survived by his widow, two adopted children, Mrs. Edwin Bowman, who resided with him and Mr. Melvin Bowman of the Macton district, five sisters, Mrs. Simeon Martin near Elmira, Mrs. Ezra Bauman near Hawkesville, Mrs. Israel Brubacher, third of Peel, Mrs. Isaac Bauman, fourth of Peel, Mrs. Urias Bauman, near Elmira. and four brothers, Edwin Martin, third of Peel, Allan Martin, Floradale, Ananias Martin, Waterloo and Tilman Martin, sixth of Peel.

The funeral was held Monday morning to the townline Mennonite Church, near Macton, and was largely attended. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.

Edwin Sam Martin of RR 2, Wallenstein, died August 7 at his home after a short illness. He was 82. He was born in Waterloo County, Oct. 6, 1885, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Tilman Martin. He was a farmer all his life. Surviving are his wife, the former Arillia Martin, three sons, Seranus of RR 1, Elmira, Freeman of RR 4, Elmira, Noah of RR 2, Wallenstein one daughter, Mrs. Edwin (Lovina) Martin of RR 2, Elmira, two brothers, Ananias of St. Jacobs and Tilman of RR 1, Drayton, two sisters, Mrs. Ezra Bauman of RR 3 Wallenstein, Mrs. Urias Bauman of RR 4, Elmira, 18 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. The body was at the Dreisinger Funeral Home, Elmira. Removal was made to his home for funeral services.

MRS. ELIAS WIDEMAN

There passed away, following an attack of pneumonia, at her home at Balsam Grove, on Sunday, March 19, Lydian Martin, wife of Elias Wideman, aged 49 years, 11 months and 2 days. The late Mrs. Wideman was born April 17, 1889, in Waterloo Co., and in 1913 she married Elias Wideman.

They lived for four years at the homestead at New Jerusalem, following which they moved to Balsam Grove, where they have since resided.

Surviving are her husband, eleven children, Mary, Lydia, Erma, Wilma and Elvina, at home; Gordon, near Elmira; Tilman, on the 4^th of Peel; Menno, near Elmira; Clayton, Abner and Ephraim, at home; five sisters, Mrs. Simon Martin, near Elmira; Mrs. Ezra Bauman , near Hawkesville; Mrs. Israel Brubacher, third of Peel; Mrs. Isaac Bauman, fourth of Peel; Mrs. Urias Martin. near Elmira; and five brothers, Joseph Martin, third of Peel; Edwin Martin, third of Peel; Allan Martin. Floradale; Ananaias Martin, Waterloo, and Tilman Martin, sixth of Peel.

The funeral was held on Tuesday, March 21, with services at the Mennonite Church. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery. Rev. J. Bauman and Rev. Abraham Bearinger were the officiating clergymen.

Husband of the late Susanna Steckle; dear father of Lloyd of St. Jacobs, Abner of Route 1, Atwood, Mrs. Aaron (Florence) Wideman of Route 1 Waterloo, Almeda of St. Jacobs, Mrs. George (Viola) Wallace of Ottawa, Mrs. Carson (Ella) Moyer or New Dundee, and Mrs. Milo (Laura) Shantz of St. Jacobs; brother of Mrs. Lizzie Bauman of Route 3, Wallenstein, Mrs. Urias (Hannah) Bauman of Route 4, Elmira, Tilman of Route 2, Drayton; 22 grandchildren also survive. MRS. REBECCA BAUMAN

Funeral of Mrs. Rebecca Bauman, 61, of 13 William St., who died Wednesday July 17 at the K-W Hospital, was conducted at the Dreisinger Funeral Chapel Friday at 2 p.m.

A memorial service was held at North Woolwich Mennonite meeting house following the chapel service. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery. The body rested at the funeral home.

Born in Waterloo Township, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Tilman Martin. Her husband Isaac B. Bauman, predeceased her.
She is survived by four sons, Clarence, Eli, and Aden, all of Elmira: Elias of RR 3. Moorefield; three. daughters, Selina and Mabel of Elmira, Mrs. Henry (Mary) Martin of RR 1, Waterloo: four brothers Allan of Floradale. Mr. Martin was born July 5, 1894, in Waterloo Township, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Manassah Martin. He had farmed for many years in the Waterloo area and had lived in the Baden area for the past year. He was a member of the Erb Street Mennonite Church. He is survived by his wife, the former Valina Shantz, whom he married March 3, 1920, in Waterloo Township; two sons, Mervin, St. Agatha, and Clare, Waterloo; two daughters, Mrs. Ward (Erma) Shantz and Mrs. George (Vera) Weber, both of Waterloo; two brothers, David, Elmira, and Ephriam, Ayr; four sisters, Mrs. Moses (Re- becca) Martin and Mrs. Clayton (Lucinda) Martin, both of Elmira, Mrs Jeremiah (Valina) Bauman, Drayton, and Mrs. Harvey (Saloma) Bauman, Waterloo, and 13 grandchildren. He was predeceased by one brother. The body is at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home until noon on Wednesday when removal will be made to Erb Street Mennonite Church for the funeral service at 3 p.m. Bishop J. B. Martin and Rev. Milton Schwartzentruber, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be in Erb Street Mennonite cemetery.

Oliver Shantz

Funeral service and burial took place Friday at the Elmira Mennonite meeting house for Oliver B. Shantz. He died suddenly last Tuesday at his home in Yatton. He was 73.

He was the husband of the former Susanna Martin and the father of Clayton, Edna Mrs. Noah Bowman and Aden of RRI Elora, Naomi (Mrs. Wayne Martin) of Savant Lake, Ont., and Abner, Vernon, Oliver and Orvie of RR2 Wallenstein: brother of Ivan of Elmira. Mrs. George Brubacher of RR2 Elmira and Mrs. Jesse Martin of RRI Waterloo. There are 42 grand- children and 8 great-grand- children. He was predeceased by one brother and one sister.

ST. JACOBS, Oct. 24 -- A brother of the bride, Rev. Howard Good of Preston, officiated at the marriage Saturday of Gladys Eileen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Abner Good, St. Jacobs, to Mr. Lloyd S. Martin. Mr. and Mrs. Annanias Martin, R.R. 3, Waterloo, are the bridegroom's parents. Assisting with the ceremony, held in St. Jacobs Mennonite Church, was Rev. Roy S. Koch of St. Jacobs. Pink and white chrysanthemums and ferns were used as church decorations. A quartet composed of Miss Ruth Groh, Miss Laura Martin, Mr. George Bechtel and Mr. Abner Martin, sang "Benedic Anima." "O Power of Love" and "O Happy Home." Miss Lois Buckwalter, assisted by the quartet, sang "The Lord's Prayer." Escorted by her father, the bride entered the church wearing a white brocaded satin gown, styled with sweetheart neckline, lily-point sleeves and full gathered skirt. Her white Bible, adorned with white feathered chrysanthemums, was a gift of the bridegroom. Miss Ellen Martin, sister of the bridegroom, was her only attendant, wearing a gown of pink crepe. She carried a hand boquet of blue tinted carnations and pink sweetheart roses. A brother of the bride, Mr. Willard Good of St. Jacobs, attended the bridegroom. Guests were ushered by Mr. Clare Martin, Waterloo, and Mr. Murray Good, St. Jacobs. Welcoming guests at her home following the ceremony was the bride's mother, dressed in gray with corsage of red roses, and the bridegroom's mother, wearing a navy ensemble and similar corsage. The couple planned a wedding trip to the Thousand Islands and Quebec and will later take up residence at R. R. 3, Waterloo. A navy gabardine suit with navy and white accessories was the bride's travelling ensemble. She wore a corsage of white feathered chrysanthemums.

MARTIN, Lloyd Steckle - Born July 20, 1928, and with his usual grace, died peacefully at home on Sunday, April 20, 2008. Predeceased by his loving wife Gladys (Good) Martin (2005) and his daughter, Sharon (2006). Cherished father of Ron Martin and his wife Sharon and Darrel Martin. Lovingly remembered by his son-in-law, Eugene Snyder and daughter-in-law, Karen Martin. Devoted grandfather of Robyn (Maurits) Dagelinckx , Ryan (Leanne) Uttley, Tonya and Jonathan Martin, and Hillary and Evan Snyder. Great-grandfather of Mikaela and Nathan Dagelinckx and Benjamin and William Uttley. Brother of Florence Wideman, Viola (George) Wallace, Ellen Moyer, Laura (Milo) Shantz, and Abner (Shirley) Martin. His unconditional love for everyone was one amazing expression of his faith. Lloyd partnered with Gladys in all their business ventures including farming, Martin's Tax Service and a recreation facility in Grand Bend. He also enjoyed the support and friendships in his long time neighbourhood and he loved the sound of children's laughter. Menno Singers founder Abner Martin remembered for lasting impact on community

Waterloo - The founder of the Menno Singers and Mennonite Mass Choir has passed away.

Abner Martin, of Waterloo, died on Friday. He was 84.

Martin was the founding artistic director of Menno Singers in 1955 and conductor for 20 years. He was a leader for excellence in choral music in this community, at a time when there was no concert hall or standing choirs performing challenging choral works.

"I think he was a pioneer," said his daughter, Stephanie Martin.

Martin founded the Menno Singers when he was 20, spurred by his vision for a choir dedicated to quality choral and sacred music. In 1974, he was behind the formation of the Mennonite Mass Choir.

A tribute posted on the Menno Singers' website Saturday included a quote from Martin about the "great bond of unity" found in choral music: "I wish that everyone could experience the unique joy of singing in a highly disciplined choir. Singing in a group is all about immersing one's self into the community of singers."

Martin directed both choirs until his retirement in 1979, when the Menno Singers established the Abner Martin Music Scholarship, awarded annually to a deserving university music student from Ontario.

Martin was inducted into the Waterloo Region Hall of Fame in 2017. His daughter said he was pleased to be recognized, although he was always modest about his accomplishments.

The award biography starts with an intriguing dichotomy: "There are two sides to Abner Martin \emdash choral musician and cattleman."

Martin bought a dairy farm in Perth County in the early 1970s, after leaving his teaching position at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick, due to health issues. He was proud of his herd of prize-winning Charolais and Holstein cattle.....

BAUMAN, Mabel M. 1929-2010 Passed away peacefully at St. Mary's General Hospital on Tuesday, May 18, 2010 in her 81st year. Mabel was born December 6, 1929 on the family farm on the 4th of Peel Township. Survived by brothers Elias and Minerva Bauman of Listowel, Aden and Joanne Bauman of Elmira and brother-in-law Henry and Eileen Martin of Elmira. Mabel was a special aunt to 18 nieces and nephews, 43 great-nieces and nephews and 22 great-great nieces and nephews. Also remembered by Carl Buschert who was a boarder at her home for 30 years and faithfully visited Mabel weekly at Chateau Gardens. Predeceased by her parents Isaac and Rebecca (Martin) Bauman, brothers Clarence (1990) and Eli (2004), sisters Selina (1997) and Mary Martin (2007), three nephews in infancy, two great-nieces and one great-nephew. In 1948, Mabel moved to Elmira with her brothers and sister. They built an accessible bungalow in 1962. She resided there until health issues helped her decide to move to Chateau Gardens LTC. Mabel enjoyed it there for 11 1/2 years where staff and other residents always appreciated her sweet smile and pleasant personality. The family would like to thank all staff at Chateau Gardens for their excellent care given to Mabel. The family will receive their friends and relatives at the Dreisinger Funeral Home , Elmira, on Monday, May 24, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service to celebrate Mabel's life will be held at the Elmira Mennonite Church on Tuesday, May 25, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Johanna Wall and Pastor Ray Brubacher officiating, followed by interment in Elmira Mennonite Cemetery. The casket will be open at the church from 9:30 until the time of service. Aden grew up on the 4th Line in Wellington County, moved to William St. in Elmira and attended Riverside School where he made lifelong friends. As a young adult he attended Variety Village Vocational School in Toronto to learn watch repair. He spent his life working in this profession; he was the proud and industrious owner of Bauman Jewelers, Elmira from 1956 to 2000. Even after retiring, Aden never stopped watch and jewelry repair until his recent hospitalization and will be missed by many for his excellent workmanship. Aden was a faithful member of Elmira Mennonite Church and he appreciated the help of ushers and friends. A physical disability did not keep Aden from a life of work and friendships which was documented by his friend Del Gingrich in Watchman: Abilities and Disabilities.

It is with sadness that we share the passing of Almeda Snider on May 22, 2010 at the age of 89. She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Hackett of Kitchener; a son, Mark (Kim Market) of North Bay; and a daughter, Jane (Larry Nafziger) of Ottawa; also a sister, Doris Bowman and brother-inlaw, Harold Bowman, and sister-inlaw, Marjorie Bearinger. She will be missed by grandchildren Zakary Nafziger, Hannah and Abram Snider, step-granddaughter Adwenna Peters. She was predeceased by her husband, A. Leonard Snider (2001); her parents David and Elvina (Shantz) Bearinger; two brothers, Riley and Vernon and his twin sister, Vera. As a member of Erb St. Mennonite Church for many years, Almeda enjoyed meeting with the women's groups there and serving in several positions on the executive. She also worked on the library committee at the church for a number of years. She will be remembered for her interest in current affairs, her love of gardening and flowers, and her love of travel. The many quilts she made for her children are a tangible reflection of her heritage. Friends are invited to share their memories of Almeda with her family during visitation at Erb Street Mennonite Church, 131 Erb Street West, Waterloo on Tuesday, May 25 (today) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the church on Wednesday, May 26 at 3 p.m. with Rev. GOSHEN -- Willard "Dick" Martin, 89, of 1801 Greencroft Drive, Apt. 432, died Friday (Dec. 11, 2009) at 10: 18 a.m. in Goshen General Hospital.

He was born Jan. 8, 1920, in Woolwich Township, Waterloo County, Ontario, Canada, to Seranus S. and Blendina (Gingrich) Martin. He married Melba Weaver on Dec. 15, 1962, at Yellow Creek Mennonite Church.

She survives along with four sisters, Naomi (Ephraim) Hoffman of Kitchener, Ontario, Valina Martin of Elmira, Ontario, Lucinda Martin of Wichita, Kan., and Viola Martin of Elmira; and one brother, Floyd "Butch" Martin of Waterloo, Ontario.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Elmer Martin, and one sister, Lena Snyder.

Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret Funeral Home, 311 S. Main St., Goshen, is handling arrangements. Visitation is from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Koinonia Room at College Mennonite Church, 1900 S. Main St., Goshen. The funeral service is 11 a.m. Wednesday at College Mennonite Church with Pastors Gary Martin and Katie Cunningham officiating.

Mr. Martin, formerly of Floradale, Ontario, began working in a sawmill with his father and brother Elmer while living in Canada and ultimately became head sawyer. He received a B.A. in history from Goshen College and a B.D. in theology from Goshen Biblical Seminary. After college, he worked eight years at the Mennonite Board of Missions, where he met his wife, in the 1-W program, serving as 1-W coordinator in Denver from 1964 to 1968. He also worked at the Great Commonwealth Insurance Company, the Wakarusa Farm Center and the Rochester Silo Company. He served in alternate service at Montreal River Camp in 1941, worked on a drilling crew on the TransCanada Highway, helped start Chesley Lake Camp in Ontario and served for 30 years at many Mennonite camps in Ontario, Illinois and Pennsylvania. He belonged to College Mennonite Church, was a volunteer with the Victim Offender Reconciliation Program and helped start the Pa. Deitsch Society of Northern Indiana and the Indiana-Michigan Open Golf Tournament. In retirement he golfed, read and did woodwork.

Locally, her keen sense of heritage was expressed in the writing of local history, collecting of antiques and dedicated involvement in Women's Institute and the Woolwich Agricultural Society. All of this, while supporting Abner in his endeavours that lead to inductions into the Waterloo County and Ontario Agricultural Halls of Fame. The family will receive their friends and relatives at the Dreisinger Funeral Rome , Elmira on Sunday, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. At 9 a.m. on Monday, June 2, transfer will be made to Calvary United Church, St. Jacobs for funeral service at 11 a.m. with Rev.
