Michael Myers, "son of Abraham and Elizabeth (Delp) Myers, was born near Doylestown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, August 24th, 1803. Upon leaving school he chose the milling trade as his calling. After having served his apprenticeship of three years, he continued in the service of his old master for another term of five years. In 1827 he left his native home and state and moved to Canada and settled in the town of Waterloo where he was employed by the late Jacob S. Shoemaker (Mr. Shoemaker had rented the Waterloo Union Mills from Mr. Abraham Erb) as head miller. On October 11th, 1829, he was married to Mary (Polly), daughter of John and Mary (Shantz) Shoemaker. She was born May 28th, 1808. After their marriage they moved to Wilmot Township where he was engaged in farming for several years. In 1835 he was appointed as clerk of the township of Wilmot which position he held until his death which took place March 11th, 1879. They resided in the village of Baden where they possessed a beautiful home. After his decease the widow disposed of the property and moved to Berlin where she still resides with her adopted daughter, Miss Frances Well. To Mr. and Mrs. Michael Myers was born a family"

Upon the decease of his second wife he married a third time. His third wife was Catharine Thaler. They reside on a farm near Baden, Ontario. His family is as follows: Of first wife there was one son named Nathaniel (dead); unto the second wife were born four children, namely: Emanuel, Albert, Mary, and Elvine; and unto third wife were born nine children, namely: Eusebius, John, Barbara, Matilda, Annie, Wesley, Gertrude, Edward, and Clara."

NEW HAMBURG - Eusebius Myers, 89, of RR 2, New Hamburg, died Sunday at Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital following a short illness. Born in Wilmot Township, he was a lifelong resident of the district. He was a member of Zion Evangelical United Brethren Church, New Hamburg, and was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Abraham Myers. He was married to the former Susan Schweitzer in 1897. She predeceased him in 1947. Surviving are three sons, Elmer of Thedford, Floyd of RR 2, New Hamburg and Clarence of RR 1, New Hamburg; one brother, Edward of Stratford; three sisters, Mrs. Tillie Hunsberger of Spencer, N.Y.; Mrs. Addison (Barbara) Geiger of RR 4, Kitchener and Mrs. William (Clara) Schmidt of Kitchener, 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter in infancy. The body is at the Futher-Omand Funeral Home until Wednesday noon when removal will be made to Zion Evangelical United Brethren Church for the funeral at 2 p.m. Rev. F. Paul Erb will officiate. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, New Hamburg

A former resident of Baden, John T. Myers, 75, died at Peru, Ind., yesterday.

He was the son of the Lite Mr. and Mrs. Abraham Myers, and was born in Baden in 1873.

Surviving are his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Milton Rasmussen and Mrs. Frank Newcom, both of Chicago; three brothers, Euselius and Edward, New Hamburg; W. S. Myers, Kitchener; and five sisters, Mrs. Menno Turel, Waterloo; Mrs. John Siebert, Chesley; Mrs. A. Ceiger, Mannheim; Mrs. E. W. Honsberger, Spencer, N.Y.; and Mrs. W. E. Schmidt, Kitchener; and two granddaughters.

The funeral will be held in Peru, Ind, tomorrow.

Her husband, William Arndt, died Jan.4 of this year. Born at Baden, Mrs. Arndt was a former resident of Hespeler and Parkway. She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church. PRESTON, March 4.-Allen Myers died at his home in Doon yesterday in his 74^th year. Deceased, who had farmed in that area for many years, was born in Baden. Surviving are his widow, who, previous to her marriage was Miss Mary O'Hanley, one son, Joseph of Kitchener, and three daughters, Mrs. Walter Winkler of Greenland, Sask., Mrs. Ella Bonner of Doon, and Mrs. Jerome White of Doon. Thirteen grandchildren also survive. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon from the residence at 2.30 o'clock to Doon Cemetery.

A VICTIM OF POISONING

Albanus Myer is Fourth Workman to Die Following Inhaling of Sewer Gas.

Albanus Myer, who was gassed at the Kitchener sewer plant on Tuesday, Sept. 2nd, died in the K.-W. hospital on Wednesday evening, making the fourth death in connection with the fatal poisoning by gas fumes. Eph. Ernst, the foreman at the plant, who also inhaled the poisonous fumes while trying to rescue his fellow workmen, was confined to the hospital for many days. The funerals of John Stevenson, Jacob Eby and Chas. Zuch, the other victims of the accident, were held last week.

Dr. J. E. Hett, coroner, has called for a thorough investigation and it is likely that Dr. Nasmith, who with Dr. Amyot, designed the Mill Street plant in 1902, will be asked to investigate the cause of the gas fumes in the sewer tank.

Crown Attorney Bowlby will assist in the inquiry.

Myer was born in Baden in 1870 and had been an employe at the sewer farm for many years. He is survived by his wife, three sons, Wesley, Reuben and Walter, all of this city. two daughters, Mrs. H. Gardner and Mrs. Riehl, also of Kitchener, one brother, James Myer, and ten grand-children. Six sisters who survive are Mrs. M. Smee, Detroit, Mrs. J Manger and Mrs. J. Eby of this city Mrs. S. Heronimus of Crosshill, and Mrs. E. Ernst and Mrs. R. Uttley also of Kitchener.

Suffering a stroke, James Myers, 488 King street past, passed away suddenly at the family residence at an early hour this morning.

Deceased, a city laborer working in the works department, was 60 years of age. He was born in Baden, a son of the late Hezekiah Myers and Sarah Block

Surviving are his wife, three sons, Laverne in Woodstock, John and George of Kitchener, and three daughters, Mrs E. Lempe, Stoney Creek, Miss Mabel and Mr. M. Kringle of Kitchener. Mrs. R. Uttley, city, Mr. Edward Mmee, Windsor, Mrs. J. Manger, Mr J. Eby, Mrs. E. Ernst, all of Kitchener, and Mr. M. Hieronymus, Crosshill, also survive. Surviving are her husband, three sons, Howard, Earl and Russell, Jr., all of Kitchener, five daughters, Mrs. Herbert Benedict, Mrs. Frederick Hofheinz, Mrs. Edgar Currie and Mrs. William Dickson of Kitchener and Miss Jean Uttley, Galt, five sisters. Mrs. Miranda Nahrgang, New Hamburg, Mrs. Susannah Manser, Mrs. Isabelle Eby and Mrs. Ephriam Ernst, Kitchener, and Mrs. Emma Hieronimus of Crosshill and by seven grandchildren. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon from the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home at 2 o'clock. Interment will take place in Woodland Cemetery. Rev. Clarence M. Keen, pastor of Benton Street Baptist Church, will conduct the services. The remains are resting at the funeral home.

The former Vera Geiger, she was born in Wilmot Township, June 11. 1906, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Addison Geiger. She was a member of the South Easthope United Church.

In Nov. 1937. she married Ezra Schwass. The couple lived near New Dundee until 1947 when they moved to South Easthope Township.

Surviving are her husband, Ezra John; two sons, Howard and Vernon, both of Tavistock; two daughters. Mrs. Robert (Margaret) Hatch. 28 Frederick St.. Stratford; Jean, at home: one sister. Miss Ida Geiger, Tavistock, seven grandchildren.

Calvin used to own a car that he has rigged up with Christmas lights inside (saw it at the junkyard), and used to ride a bike for many years, until it was crunched by a car. We lost a real legend': Calvin Kaufman, known as the Wizard, dies at 95

WATERLOO REGION A "kind and gentle soul" affectionately known as the Wizard has died at age 95.

"We lost a real legend," Kitchener lawyer Hal Mattson said of Calvin Kaufman. "The Wizard was sort of the last character in Kitchener-Waterloo. We don't have characters like that anymore."

Over the years, thousands of motorists saw Kaufman stooped and with his head down walking or pushing his bicycle each day along the streets of Kitchener and Waterloo. He often covered 10 kilometres a day.

In his travels, Kaufman spoke to almost no one.

Mattson frequently saw the dishevelled man, wearing oversize work boots, pushing his bicycle up the Freeport hill.

"Every time I went to Cambridge court and every time I'd come in from Toronto, you'd see the Wizard going up and down the hill, trudging along in the middle of summer with two winter jackets on and a hat."

Although Mattson never spoke to Kaufman, the lawyer had a soft spot in his heart for him. He even announced to a judge in assignment court that the Wizard had recently died.

Many people hadn't seen Kaufman in years.

Jeff Hannusch, a New Orleans writer who lived in Kitchener until 1978, said Kaufman lived in a room above the Grand Union Hotel on King Street in Kitchener in the 1960s.

"I used to see him on King Street a lot," he said. "He had one of those Pee-wee Herman bikes. It was kind of decked out with mirrors and streamers. Most baby boomers who still live in Kitchener would still remember the bicycle."

Hannusch worked part-time for three or four years at Waterloo Metal Stampings on Manitou Drive.

"The Wizard worked there," he said. "He ran the tumbler. He would shovel metal parts into a big barrel and then shovel in sawdust and it would rotate and it would take the sharp points off.

"When we would have lunch or breaks, he would get something out of the vending machines, but he would never sit in the break room. He would go back to the tumbler and sit there. All the years I knew him, I never heard his voice once. He was really reclusive, I guess."

Hannusch did not recall the Wizard's real name.

"When Hal (Mattson) called me and told me Calvin Kaufman had died, I said, 'I don't know who the hell you're talking about.' He went on and on and I said, 'Oh, you mean the Wizard?' I said, 'Ya, hell I knew the Wizard really well.' Well, I didn't know him, I knew of him.

"He seemed like a nice guy. He was a little bit off the wall, but he was like a character."

Mattson said as far as characters go, Kaufman was right up there with Frank Groff, an unpaid crossing guard and eccentric who became affectionately known as the Bridgeport General.

Groff, who lived in a rundown house and always wore rubber boots, several sweaters and a raincoat, died in 1978.

In the 1990s, Kaufman received a $900 monthly pension and lived in a Kitchener motel. Michael Barlow, a counsellor in Waterloo, believes he once lived in Homer Watson Park in Kitchener. In later years, he apparently lived in Cambridge.

A longtime runner, Barlow said that years ago he used to see Kaufman all the time.

"I tried for like five years to get him to say hello to me," but Kaufman said nothing.

"He didn't really speak to anyone. I tried, but he'd just give me a friendly little smirk."

A Record reporter managed to get Kaufman to answer some questions back in 1993.

"I'm a respectable bum," he said. "That means I don't drink or smoke or do pot."

A lifelong bachelor who was born and raised in Kitchener, Kaufman was an electrician before his disdain for authority made him chuck it all.

"Some people have a problem with the way I live," he told the reporter. "They think I should live the way they do. Self-appointed dictators, that's all they are."

In the 1990s, Kaufman followed a strict routine. Early each morning, he would walk several kilometres to catch a Kitchener bus.

He would go to malls, do some shopping, maybe visit a friend downtown. Then he hopped on another bus in the evening and made the long walk home.

"I don't like sitting in one place all day," he told the reporter. "If you don't walk six miles a day, you won't get to sleep at night."

Barlow recalls seeing Kaufman pushing his "electrified" bike '97 loaded with lights '97 up and down King Street in both Waterloo and Kitchener.

"He pushed it from the far end of Waterloo to Freeport. He was probably the first LRT," he said with a laugh. "A cheaper version."

Why was he called the Wizard?

"He had sort of a weather-beaten face," Barlow said. "He had kind of a quirky look. He almost looked like Merlin."

Barlow described Kaufman as "very regimented, quiet, reserved, not one to bother with people, pretty introverted, generally wouldn't hurt a flea, peaceful man."

Kaufman, who died on Aug. 24, was "a Christian man who lived life to the fullest," his obituary says. "Calvin spent his life being kindhearted and generous. Walking was his passion and he made many friends along the way."

"I met Calvin as young police officer walking the beat in Kitchener in the late '70s," Philip Neville wrote in the online guest book included with Kaufman's obituary. "Calvin was a kind and gentle soul who walked quietly into our lives and will always be remembered by many."

His obituary says memorial donations to the Cambridge Humane Society would be appreciated. He is survived by nieces and nephews.

Historian Grace Schmidt Dies

Retired librarian Grace Schmidt was known for being a walking encyclopedia, a woman so filled with details about the history of Waterloo Region that they named a room after her at the Kitchener Public Library.

But more than just knowledgeable, Schmidt was a tenacious protector of the region's history, refusing to let progress override what our pioneer ancestors had worked so hard to build. Not a file, a photo or an artifact could be threatened with disposal without Schmidt running to its rescue.

Schmidt died Sunday at the Fairview Mennonite Home in Cambridge at age 96 and it isn't an exaggeration to say the woman left a legacy few could match....

Grace is also survived by two nieces, Kathy and her husband David Angus and by Sarah Wildman and her companion Bill, and one nephew, Wm. Scott Nelson, all of Cambridge. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Erwin Nelson and his wife Barbara, also of Cambridge. A daughter of the very community she served, Miss Schmidt's pioneering efforts to acquire, conserve and make accessible local history and archival material formed a solid base for the growing study of local history by amateurs and scholars alike. Miss Schmidt's contributions extend well beyond her important role as archivist for both the Kitchener Public Library and the Waterloo Historical Society, reflecting her nurturing love of local history. She has served the Waterloo Regional Heritage Foundation, and was actively involved in one of the Foundation's most ambitious projects: the restoration of the historic Joseph Schneider Haus. As well, she has played a central role in the development of the Waterloo Historical Society, the Waterloo County Hall of Fame and the Red Cross. She served as Board member of the United Church Women of Zion, the United Church and the United Church Hamilton Conference archive's committee. Miss Schmidt's contributions to the broader community have been paramount in preserving and celebrating the history and culture of this area. Grace Schmidt has received deserved recognition for her dedicated efforts in the past. Her honours include: induction into the Waterloo County Hall of Fame (1996); the Outstanding Achievement Award for volunteerism, given by the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Recreation (1995); the Waterloo Regional Heritage Foundation Award of Excellence (1991); the Alexander Fraser Award by the Ontario Association of Archivists; Kitchener-Waterloo Woman of the Year (1980). In 1999, Grace Schmidt received an honorary Doctorate from the University of Waterloo. Schmidt and the former Clara Myers. She is survived by her sister, Martha Grace Schmidt and predeceased by a sister, Florence (Florrie) Nelson. Sally was born in Kitchener, attended K.W. Collegiate, Waterloo College and the University of Western Ontario. Upon graduation she taught high school in Delhi and Milverton before joining the Staff of K.C.I. as the first lady math teacher at the school. Her whole life was centered on her family, school, church and her garden. She was a lifelong member of Zion United Church and the U.C.W. In keeping with Sally's wishes, cremation has taken place with private family Inurnment at a later date. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 24, 2008, from 1-2 p.m. with a memorial service at 2 p.m. at the Fairview Mennonite Home, 515 Langs Dr., Cambridge. Mrs. Philip W. Winkler of 16 Homewood Ave. died Tuesday at the Sunnyside Home after a lengthy illness. She was 73.

DICKSON (Uttley), Ruth May Passed away, peacefully, at Grand River Hospital, on Thursday, May 31, 2012, in her 91st year. Daughter of the late Russell Uttley and Ida Meyers. Reunited with loving husband, John Dickson; adoring sister of the late Hazel (Coffen), Violet (Hofheinz), Howard Uttley, Elsie (Currie), Jean (Pfeiffer) and son-in-law, John George. She will be fondly remembered by brothers, Earl and Russell Uttley. Deeply missed by her children, Roger Dickson (Laura), Richard Dickson (Shirley), Sandy Demers (Frank), Darlene Simmons (Bob) and Linda George. Adored by 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and 13 great- great-grandchildren. Ruth's family wishes to extend sincere thanks to the nurses of Grand River Hospital, 5th floor Heart and Stroke Unit. Cremation has taken place and a "Celebration" of life will take place at Doon Pioneer Park Community Centre, 150 Pioneer Drive, Kitchener on June 23, 2012 between 1 and 5 p.m. All friends and family welcome. Refreshments to be served with an informal time for story telling. We lost the "GREAT ONE" but HEAVEN gained a "SPECIAL ANGEL"

UTTLEY, Howard (Sonny) -- On Friday, June 13, 1980, at the K-W Hospital, after a brief illness, Howard (Sonny) Uttley, aged 57 years, of 126 Fourth Ave., Kitchener.

Survived by his wife Bernadine; his four sons, Wayne, Rodney, Bob and Larry; his two daughters, Carol and Sharon; his two brothers, Russell Jr. of Kitchener, and Earl of New Brunswick; his four sisters, Hazel (Mrs. Mac Coffen), Violet (Mrs. Edgar Currie) and Ruth (Mrs. Mike Dickson), all of Kitchener. Predeceased by his parents, Russell and Ida Uttley and sister, Jean (Mrs. Dick Pfeiffer).

He was an employee of Marion Sod Supply for the past eight years.

Friends may call at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, 621 King St. W., Kitchener, after 7 p.m. on Saturday. Funeral and committal service in the Ratz-Bechtel Chapel on Monday, at 3 p.m. Interment will be made in Woodland cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be shown by donations to the Canadian Cancer Society.

SUDBURY -- Mrs. Richard Pfieffer of 389 Charette St., Chelmsford, died suddenly Thursday at Sudbury Hospital. She was 44.

The former Jean Loretta Uttley, she was born in Kitchener, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Russell Uttley and had lived in Chelmsford for the past two years.

Surviving besides her husband, are three sons, Brian, Richard, and Gene, all of Kitchener; three brothers, Howard and Russell, both of Kitchener and Earl, New Brunswick; four sisters, Mrs. Maxwell (Hazel) Coffen, Mrs. Violet Hofheinz, Mrs. Elsie Currie, and Mrs. Michael (Ruth) Dickson, all of Kitchener, and one granddaughter.

The body will be at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, Kitchener, after 8 tonight where funeral and committal service will be conducted by Rev. E. M. Erion of Chemsford Saturday at 3 p.m. Burial will be in Woodland cemetery, Kitchener.
