    Preston Woman Killed at Galt

Mrs. Alton Eby Is Struck By Radial Car As She Was Transferring From Stalled Bus; Had Sung Solo In Church Shortly Before Mishap

Mrs. Alton Eby, King Street East, was almost instantly killed last night when she was struck by a Galt-bound Grand River Street car after stepping off a Comet bus, which was parked against the curb owing to engine trouble on the Galt-Preston highway which parallels the railway right-of-way. The bus was traveling towards Preston and having encountered engine trouble it had stopped on the highway at a point opposite Dr. MacKendrick's residence on the outskirts of Galt, near the golf links to transfer its passengers to another bus belonging to the same company. Mrs. Eby was the last passenger out and she was apparently unaware of the oncoming radial car. The space between the bus and the tracks was not very wide and the unfortunate passenger apparently got too close to the tracks with the result that she was struck a glancing blow by the fast traveling street car. Severe injuries to her legs and head resulted in practically instantaneous death. Other bus passengers narrowly escaped being hit as well as the space between the vehicle and the passing car was limited.

Word of Mrs. Eby's death cast a spell of gloom over the whole town as she is well known and had made many friends here by her kindly and cheerful disposition. For several years she was associated with the Knox Presbyterian Church choir as a soprano soloist and was otherwise active in church work. Only a short time before the accident which occurred between eight and nine o'clock she sang a solo at the evening service in Knox Church and those who heard her were greatly shocked at her sudden demise. She had left church early in order to accompany her sister Mrs. Bell t the C.P.R. statin at Galt to catch a train for London where she resides. It was after saying goodbye to her sister that Mrs. Eby was returning to Preston in the bus. Her death was a great blow to her husband who was waiting at home for her after putting their two young children to bed. The deceased was in her 28th year and only yesterday stated that never in her life had she been so happy. The sympathies of Preston citizens are extended to the bereaved husband and little family consisting of two boys Kenneth, the eldest attending school, and little Roy who is below school age. Besides her husband and children she leaves to mourn her loss her widowed mother, Mrs. Johnston, of Hespeler, and four sisters, Miss Ola Johnston, of Halifax, N.S., Mrs. Ogden, of Kincardine, Mrs. Davies, of Toronto, and Mrs. Bell, of London, also two brothers, Roy of Hespeler and Jay, of Toronto.

    Inquest Adjourned

Corner J. H. Radford, of Galt, has ordered an inquest into the death. The coroner's jury met in the Galt council chambers at 11 o'clock today, and it was decided to adjourn until 2 o'clock, Wednesday afternoon. The following are serving on the jury, J. Burgess, James Vlasey, Ernest Hutchison, R. McCully, N. Hammon, Reid Hunter, J. W. McKellar, C. Gorth, George Burgess, and A. R. McFayden, all of Galt. Archie Love, of Galt, was the driver of the bus.
