CLEMENS - An inquest was held yesterday at the home of Mr. David Clemens, about three miles above the village of Preston, before Dr. Seagram, coroner of the District of Wellington and Gore, to investigate into the cause of death of Mrs. Charlena Clemens, the wife of the above David Clemens, who had been found dead on the previous night about 10 o'clock. A highly respectable jury had assembled of whom George Clemens, Esq., was chosen foreman and, being sworn, proceeded to view the body of the unfortunate woman and the scene of her death. The latter was most appalling, into a stable about three feet from the floor of a barn, some hundred yards or so from her dwelling house, a rope was fixed, the other end of which the deceased had tied round her neck with a running noose. The cord was just long enough to prevent her knees reaching the floor, her knees being doubled beneath her, tightening the cord round her neck to suffocation, she appeared in her dying agony to have clutched the halter with her hand to hasten her death, but the blood appeared meantime to have spurted from her nose and mouth, a quantity being on the floor and lengthening her suffering by diminishing the pressure on the brain. Finally, however, she perished, and about sundown, all her family being from home, a lad going into the barn, saw the body of the deceased hanging by the rope, and alarmed the neighbourhood. Two persons cut her down and the body, being stiff and cold, they saw that life was long gone, and that any attempt at restoring it was helpless. They carried the body to her late residence, and sent for the coroner. The inquest brought out few new facts other than what are stated above, except that since January, the deceased exhibited symptoms of mental derangement, the consequence of some disease of the brain. One witness swore that in the month of January, he was stopping in the house when at midnight the deceased got up, sung psalms, prayed, and entirely undressed herself, saying she was bound to travel through the world for eight months naked, moneyless, and without food. From that time to the day of her death, she had frequent returns of her malady. The last time she was seen alive, was about 9 o'clock in the morning of her death. Her children are all highly respectable and married, or being at a great distance from their mother's house, and her husband had gone on business to another township. This accounts for her death not being discovered sooner. The jury without retiring or any hesitation returned a verdict "that the deceased came to her death by strangulation while labouring under a fit of insanity".

The Petition of David Master and Marianne Master of the Township of Wilmot.

Humbly therewith,

That Abraham C. Master, formerly of the said Township of Wilmot, Yeoman, deceased, departed life on or about the seventh day of July in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and fifty three, leaving your Petitioners, David Masters and Marianne Master, infants within the age of Eighteen years (the said David Master now growing to the age of fourteen and the said Marianne Master to the age of Eight years) him surviving, and your petitioners have now no legal Guardian.

That Lucinda Master, their mother, widow of the same Abraham C. Master, also residing in the said Township of Wilmot, is in the humble opinion of your Petitioners a fit and proper person to be appointed Guardian of us her said children, and She being fully able and prepared to give sufficient surety for the due performance of her trust.

Your Petitioners therefore humbly pray that their said mother Lucinda Master may be appointed such Guardian to her children and your Petitioners will ever pray. Wilmot, the nineteenth day of January A. D. 1856.

Master, formerly of the said place, Sawyer, now deceased, and Stouffer Clemens and Isaac Bergy of the Township of Waterloo, in the said County - are jointly and severally firmly hold and bound by those presents unto David Master, of the said Township of Wilmot, infant son of the said Abraham C. Master, deceased and of his the said Lucinda Master, now his widow, and to this his executors and administrators, into the true and just final sum of Three Thousand pounds, lawful money of Canada, the Conditions whereof are as follows, that is to say - Whereas the said David Master has made application in writing to William Miller, Esquire, Judge of the Surrogate Court of this said County of Waterloo for the appointment as Guardian over himself of his own aforesaw Mother Lucinda Master, and such appointment being granted by the Judge aforesaid. Now therefore if the said Lucinda Master shall faithfully fulfill and perform due and true administration of the Estate of the said David Masters; also keep and give true and correct account thereof; and also give and pay over to him the said David Master when he shall come upon the full age of twenty one years, or sooner whenever the said Guardianship shall determine; or whenever else she shall and may be directed by the Judge of the said Court, or by any other person or persons having authority to demand, and then give and pay over to the said David Master, or to his heirs, executors, administrators or assigns all and singular the Sum or Sums, or balance of money, property and Estate lawfully belonging to the said David Masters, or to his heirs, executors, administrators or assigns - deducting however all lawful expenses, costs and claims by her had on account of such her Guardianship, then these presents shall be null and void, but otherwise remain in full force and virtue. Clemens St. Clair

GALT, Clemens St. Clair, died suddenly at his home, RR 1, Galt, Sunday. He was born in Preston, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John St. Clair and lived most of his life in Galt. For 11 years he operated the CNIB stand, on King St. East, in Kitchener and retired to Galt, six years ago. Mr. St. Clair was a member of the Gospel Hall in Galt. His wife, the former Daisy Pickard, died in 1921. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Arnot (Dorothy) Johnston of Staynor, three sons, John of Clyde, Clemens and James of RR 1, Galt, two sisters, Mrs. Anson (Ethel) Rogers of Burlington and Mrs. George (Lulu) Goodall of Arizona and 12 grandchildren. The body is at Coutts Funeral Home, where the funeral will be conducted, at 2 p.m., Tuesday. Burial will be in Mount View Cemetery, Galt.
