In Glenmorris, on Monday the 7th instant, Mr. John Campbell, farmer, Dumfries, aged 82 years and 9 months. Mr. Campbell was an early settler in Dumfries, having taken up his abode therein 37 years ago. He was a highly intelligent man; kind-hearted, cheerful, and benevolent; and whilst strength lasted, was an example to the country of well-directed and habitual energy, which finally secured him a handsome competency. His funeral yesterday from Glenmorris to Galt was attended by a procession upwards of half a mile in length, including a great proportion of the Clergy of all denominations in the town and country.

DEATH OF MRS. McFEIGGAN.
DIED-In Galt, on Tuesday morning 21st inst, at 4.30 o'clock, Janet Campbell, relict of the late David McFeiggan, aged 77 years 11 months and 9 days. Mrs McFeiggan at the time of her death was perhaps the oldest resident in Galt. She was born in Selkirkshire, Scotland, in the year 1810, and came to this country with her father, the late Duke Campbell, in the year 1824. They settled in the township of North Dumfries, on the farm two and a half miles south of Galt, now occupied by her brother, Mr. James C. Campbell. The township was then almost an unbroken wilderness and she shared wither father and the rest of the family all the hardships peculiar to pioneer life at that time. Galt at that early period was a very small hamlet, indeed. The deceased was married in 1833 and she and her husband, the late David McFeiggan, took up their residence in Galt in the year 1836, where she has continued to reside ever since. She has seen the country changed from wilderness into fruitful fields, and the village of a few log houses into the most important town in Ontario. Mrs. McFeiggan was a woman of great force and character and indomitable energy, and was always cheerful and hopeful under the most adverse circumstances. She was a kind neighbor and a good and loving wife and mother and endeared herself to her family. She was the mother of thirteen children, eight of whom survive her - three sons and five daughters. Her eldest son, James, is Inspector of the Gore District Mutual Fire Ins. Co. David is a moulder and John a machinist, both of whom are employed in Goldie & McCulloch's foundry. The daughters are Miss Elizabeth McFeiggan, Mrs. G. Smith, Mrs. John Ross, Mrs. Samuel Burnett, and Mrs McEachern. In religion she was Presbyterian, and at the time of her death was a member of the Central Presbyterian church. Her face was a familiar one about town, until about three years ago, when she was seized with paralysis, from which she never fully recovered, bring most of the time confined to the house. About three weeks ago she had an attack of congestion of the lungs and after enduring intense suffering, passed gently away on Tuesday mornning last.

Jas. C. Campbell's Death
One of Dumfries Township's Pioneers Dies at 80 Years of Age
At a quarter past eight o'clock this morning Mr. James C. Campbell entered into his rest at his residence on Market Street, after an illness solely created by the natural declining of the constitution from old age and ? lasted more or less during the past winter. His death removes another of the North Dumfries Township stalwarts from the scenes of earth's activities and a man who was favorably and well known throughout these parts. James Campbell was born near Hawick, Scotland, eighty years ago, and when his father, the late John D. Campbell, with his wife and family emigrated to Canada and to the newly opened section now comprising this township, James came along as a boy of four years; and for the seventy-six years that followed he lived on the homestead farm on the East River Road, just at the Foot Bridge, and in Galt, he having retired here with his wife ten years ago, leaving his son, John, on the farm. It was difficult in those early days to acquire much of an education, but to an aggressive character like that possessed by the sturdy Scotch youth, this presented only an obstacle that contributed to the formation of a still more determined character, for he studied every subject that was within his reach and ultimately became one of the most practical and best-informed men in these parts. His fund of historical information was marvelous, while in a generality of themes he was exceedingly well posted, being one of the most entertaining and instructive conversationalists of the early times of Dumfries to be found anywhere. He had a keen appreciation of the humorous and a vivid memory to recall the detail of incident. Being a man of stalwart physique, strong and muscular in body, in fact the possessor of a perfect human frame, he carried gracefully the qualities of his heart and mind. In politics he gave his unswerving adherence to the Conservative party, and in religion he was a Presbyterian, and a member of Knox Church. He was twice married, the first time to Margaret Batters - by whom he had four children, two of whom, John, already referred to, and Mrs. C. Glady, of Galt, survive - who died twenty-five years ago, and on the second occasion to Euphemia Kerr, who survives him. Many old friends now scattered to all parts of the continent, while bowing to the superiority of the Great Leveller and rejoicing that James Campbell was spared so long to life, will sigh as they recall the genial acquaintance of by-gone days, who helped along by his magnanimous sympathy many a fellow man over the difficult stretches in life's pathway. The funeral takes place on Thursday afternoon at 2: 30 o'clock from his late residence to Mount View Cemetery.

Notes:
Death of Mr. James McFeiggan - It will cause a shock to our readers in this vicinity when they learn of the death of this widely-known and respected resident of Galt, for there are but comparatively few who even knew of his illness. The read words, however, have got to be spoken. After a short illness - he first complained on Thursday night of last week - Mr. McFeiggan peacefully passed away shortly after 11 o'clock on Wednesday evening, the efforts of local medical skill, coupled with that of Dr. Graham, of Toronto, being unable to check the progress of the disease inflammation of the lungs and liver.
Mr. McFeiggan was one of the few natives of Galt who by his own energy and ability succeeded in achieving a position of honor and responsibility. He was born in "the old log village" on the 29th March, 1837, so that he had reached the age of 51 years and two months all but a few days. He went to school at a very early age, he being one of old Mr. Gouinlock's favorite and best scholars when Galt school population was taught by that gentleman in what is now Mr. Brydon's blacksmith shop. After leaving school he successively entered the employ of Courtenay & Hume, T.I.G. Busby, Richard Esterbrook, and finally Mr. Gavin Hume - all merchants in Galt in their day. With the latter gentleman Mr. McFeiggan remained until, in the year 1874, he received the appointment of Inspector of the Gore District Mutual Fire Insurance Company - a position which he occupied up to the time of his death, and which he filled with eminent satisfaction to the Directors of that company. In carrying out the duties of this office Mr. McFeiggan became widely known throughout the length and breadth of the Province, and his name became a household word in connection with the "old Gore."
In his private life deceased was known as a kind and loving son so long as his aged parents required his care, and equally so a devoted brother since they passed away. In public matters any stand he took was a determined one, and opponents may sometimes have thought him harsh in the support of his own opinions; but back of it all was his evident honesty and love of principle, and his belief that what he supported or opposed was right. In church matters he was connected with the Central Presbyterian congregation, and his labours on behalf of that body were untiring. For many years he has occupied the position of Secretary to the Board of Managers; and but few months have elapsed since the congregation showed their appreciation of Mr. McFeiggan's services by presenting him with a handsome and costly gold watch. JAMES MCFEIGGAN. " As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he." This is the divine principle on which our judgment of a man is to proceed. What does he think ? What is his purpose ? What is his reigning affection ? What is he in his heart ? But who can look into the depths of the inner nature ? Only God. He looks not upon the outward appearance as man looks, he looks upon the heart. And how much is there that fails to find expression ? How much lives there unseen by men ? What a revelation it would be to have all that is in the heart laid bare. Yet therein we have the real man, and to get anywhere near him there must be real love and true friendship, and that we claim in our relation to Mr. McFeiggan. He was a true man in the highest sense of the term, as sterling and trustworthy a man as ever lived; a whole-hearted, genuine man. As a business man, he was active, diligent, conscientious, as deeply interested in the affairs of the company he represented as though everything in it had been his own. His was no eye service. He had a high sense of right, and a noble conception of honor, and a large and justly comprehensive idea of duty, and therefore his business life was a worthy and an honorable one. Righteousness marked it with its distinguishing and famous brand. No one could charge him with taking mean advantages; he was open and honest and straightforward. He carried his Christian principles into the work of every day, to give him clear thought, full power of consideration, and just judgment in all matters that came before him. Many difficult problems he had to solve and many cunning tricks he had to discover, but he set about all as a Christian man should, and seldom failed of a singular success. And as he was in his worldly business, so he was in his church life. In " Memories of the Past " I speak of him in this way: " Another was a man, not large in body, but large in purpose, noble in thought, and of marked executive ability; quick and decisive, eye flashing, and voice tuned to the action of the mind; a man always to be de pended upon; an enthusiastic worker for his church. He was a born leader of men, generous to a fault, and lovable in a high degree because of his sterling character; a man whom you wanted to grapple to your soul with hooks of steel."
He was Secretary of, the Board of Managers, and was in that office thorough and efficient. On January I7th, 1888, the Managers, in view of his length of service, extending well on towards twenty years, and the ability and faithful ness and accuracy with which he had discharged the duties devolving upon him, presented him with a handsome gold watch and chain. He took a deep interest in all that pertained to the prosperity of the Church, and that not from an outside and merely official relation, but from a true, spiritual relation to it. Many a brotherly talk we had together of sacred things, especially after the Sabbath evening service, and very refreshing and very helpful they were. He had been well trained in the truth, and had sought to digest it thoroughly for himself. He endeavored too, to reduce it to practice. He, after the death of his father, had taken his father s place, and had, by his business ability, made ample provision for the family. He was a faithful son, a loving brother, a sincere friend and a true Christian. His death was a great loss to the church, likewise to the community, and especially to his friends. We miss him much. We mourn, but would not murmur.

MRS. GEO. SMITH'S DEATH
About 18 months ago the REFORMER had occasion to refer to the sadly afflicted family of Mr. John McFeiggen, South Water street; the family having lost a Mother, Brother and Sister within three years. This week we are called upon to speak of the death of another sister, Mrs. Geo. Smith, which took place on Sunday morning, at 7: 45. Mrs. Smith had only been sick for a short time, having caught a severe cold about Christmas, from which she was getting better and was able to get up about two weeks ago; but taking a chill she gradually grew worse until she was called home. The deceased was born in Galt and was in her 53rd year. She leaves a husband, (who is in British Columbia and was not able to attend the funeral) a son and three daughters, Anson, Elizabeth and Olive at home and Mrs. T. Pink of Rochester. Notes:
Sudden Death - Miss Elizabeth Gordon, residing at the corner of Main and Stanley streets, Ayr, died very suddenly at Galt on Sunday evening. She had been away from here for a few months and was employed at the Western hotel. On Sunday she attended both services at Knox church. The events following this are thus told by the Reporter: "As she approached the corner of South Water and Concession sheets on her way home she suddenly felt faint and was obliged to lean on the arm of a gentleman who was passing for support. She was taken into the home of Mr. Wm, Coats, but asked to be moved to the door where she could get fresh air. There the sick woman fainted and Dr. Hawk was hurriedly called, while in the meantime everything possible was done for her. But it was of no avail, for she passed quietly away before the doctor arrived, death being due to heart failure. The body was removed to Anderson's morgue." The deceased, who was 60 years of age, was born here and had resided in the village the most if not all her life. She was well-known and respected. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, interment being made in the Ayr cemetery, when a number of friends gathered to pay their last tribute of respect to the departed. The services were conducted by Rev. John Thomson. Two brothers survive, Samuel in Nova Scotia and William in Stratford, Ont., while several nieces reside in Ayr.
