After her decease he was married to Mary Break who was born July 16th, 1832, and died December 16th, 1889. They resided near New Dundee, on his father's old place. About the year 1852 he was ordained minister of the old Mennonite Church but in 1854 or 1855 when a division of that body took place, he went with the new party of which body he was a noble worker. As a minister he was sincere and a diligent worker in the cause of his Master. When the death summons called him away, the church lost one of its ablest men. He died July 17th, 1873. His family consisted of ten children, of whom the eldest four were born unto his first wife."

On the 19th of February, 1899, in Berlin, Ontario, of apoplexy, wife of Deacon John Z. Detweiler, aged 73 years, 4 months and 27 days. The remains were laid to rest on the 22d in the Eby graveyard, Berlin. Funeral services by Solomon Gehman in German and by A. F. Stoltz in English. Our deceased sister had a stroke of apoplexy several days before her death, from which she never recovered consciousness. She leaves her aged husband and a family of grown children, all married but one, to mourn the loss of a beloved wife and affectionate mother.

PLATTSVILLE MOURNS

The remains of three esteemed citizens now await burial. On Saturday morning at 5 o'clock Mrs. David Clemens died, one hour later Mrs. Smith Gofton died, and on Sunday morning at six o'clock Miss Jennie Baird died. The last was the beloved and only sister of the Baird Bros.

Death of Mrs. Clemens.-On Saturday morning, April 23rd, occurred the death of Lucinda Huber, beloved wife of Mr. D. H. Clemens. Deceased had been in poor health for some months and her death though sudden was not unexpected, heart failure being the immediate cause. The late Mrs. Clemens was born in Blenheim township on November 12th 1852. In 1872 she was united in marriage with David H. Clemens, which union was blessed with nine children. To her husband she was a loving companion and to her children, a kind and indulgent mother. She was of a cheerful disposition and her many friends were always given a warm reception to her home. For many years the family lived on the old Huber homestead two miles east of Washington, but five years ago moved to Plattsville. Deceased was for many years a member of the Evangelical church where she always endeavored to be of some effective service, having taught a Sunday School class of girls who greatly mourn their loss. Deceased leaves to mourn her loss, a sorrowing husband, 6 sons, one of whom is the Rev. A. Clemens, stationed at Rainham, Ont., daughters, 2 grandsons, 4 sisters besides many other relatives and a host of friends. All the members of the family were present at the funeral except Roy of California.

The funeral took place from her late residence on Tuesday. The remains were taken to the Evangelical church where service was conducted by the Rev. Mr. Amacher assisted by Rev. Mr. Hauch. Interment took place at the Blenheim cemetery.

Death of Mrs. I. Hilborn

The death occurred in Roseville on Tuesday evening of one of the highest respected persons of this vicinity in the person of Mrs. Lizzie Hilborn, daughter of the late John S. Huber and relict of the late Isaiah Hilborn. She was born Feb. 4th, 1860, in Blenheim Township, and died April 3rd, 1923, at her late residence in North Dumfries Township. For 3 1-2 years before her marriage she taught school at Perrys corners. On Feb. 25th, 1885, she was married to Mr. Isaiah Hilborn, who predeceased her to her home above by nearly four years. For 18 years Mr. and Mrs. Hilborn lived in Pilkington Township, and 19 years ago they moved to the present Hilborn farm. Mrs. Hilborn became a Christian in her youth and joined the Methodist Church. Recently, however, she has been a valued member of the Evangelical Church here. Her Christian life was consistent and practical. She was resigned to the will of Him who "doeth all things well" and her departure was peaceful and happy.

Mrs. Hilborn is survived by six children, viz.: J. Huber, Drumbo; Ralph, New Dundee; Stanley, New Dundee; the Misses Blanche and Fannie, and Mr. Clarence at home; also six grandchildren. The funeral took place on Friday from her late residence in the Evangelical church. The services were conducted by Rev. A. t. Nash and Rev. Bachus. The pallbearers were Messrs. John and Alex McDonald, a. Poll, N. Snyder, E. Hallman and S. Rohr.

Ephraim Detwieler, living one and one half miles west of Brown City, drove some cattle to town Saturday forenoon. He left the village about noon feeling ill, walking home and died in about two hours. Deceased was a prominent farmer of that section.

Rev. Henry S. Hallman, "was born August 5th, 1859, in Wilmot Township, Waterloo County, Ontario. He attended the New Dundee public school until old enough to give an assisting hand on the farm. When well up in his "teens" he left the farm and worked with the carpenters and builders. Realizing the necessity of a better education, he entered the Berlin High School and other places of education until he passed his examination for the teaching profession. After teaching two and one-half years in Bruce County he retired from the profession and moved to Berlin where he still resides. When quite a young man he was converted unto the Lord and soon thereafter he joined with the River Brethren denomination, of which body he was a member for some years. In 1879 he united with the Mennonite Brethren in Christ denomination of which body he is an active member. In 1881 he gave his life to the ministry for the last named body and has served the church of his choice faithfully up to the present. In October, 1888, the general conference held in Berlin, Ontario, had him appointed editor of the Gospel Banner, a position he still holds. He is united in wedlock with Maria Rosenberger and has a family of five children".

Hallman, H. S. (1859-1932)

H. S. Hallman (5 August 1859-13 October 1932) was a United Missionary Church (now Evangelical Missionary Church of Canada) minister and editor. Hallman was born near Kitchener, ON. On 18 February 1881, he married Maria Rosenberger, and to their union nine children were born. Converted at the age of 14, he entered the ministry in 1881, and was ordained in 1885 by the Ontario Conference of the United Missionary Church. He held pastorates at Port Elgin and Elmwood, ON.

Elected editor of the Gospel Banner in 1888, Hallman served in this capacity for 20 years, and also as publisher from 1899 to 1908. Under his leadership the paper became a weekly publication in 1893. He also published several tracts, books, hymnbooks, and periodicals, and became the founder and first publisher of the Scripture Text Calendar which he continued to edit until his death in 1932.

Hallman was secretary-treasurer of the Ontario Conference Mission Board 1898-1910, and president 1910-17. He was the first president of the Ontario Conference city mission work. He was secretary of the Ontario conference for 15 years and also secretary of five general conferences of the denomination (1888-1904 inclusive).

In the latter part of his life Hallman became active in the Christian and Missionary Alliance (CMA), although still retaining his membership in the United Missionary Church. For several years he was superintendent of the CMA publishing business in New York City, later serving as pastor of Alliance churches in Brantford and Toronto, ON. He died in Toronto on 13 October 1932.

Dedels.-On the 5th of May, 1903, near Breslau, Ont., Nancy, belover (sic) wife of Henry Dedels, and fifth daughter of Wendell and Nancy Hallman, aged 41 Y., 8 M., 28 D. She entered the holy bonds of matrimony March 20, 1882, lived in matrimony a little over 21 years. To this union were born 11 children, of whom 4 preceded her to the spirit world, leaving a bereaved husband, 3 sons and 4 daughters, kind parents, 5 brothers and 6 sisters, besides many relatives and friends to mourn their loss. David Stauffer

The death took place on Monday at the home of Mrs. Eshleman, 196 Benton St., of Mr. David Stauffer, after an illness of only a few days duration, aged 72 years, 3 months and 22 days. The deceased was a cheese maker by trade but has been living retired in Berlin for some years.

The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the house, to Zion Evangelical church and then to the East End cemetery for burial.

He is a son of Amos M. and Mary Wismer Clemens, the former a native of Bucks Co., Pa., born Feb. 13, 1819 and the latter of Canada, born June 21, 1821. They were married in 1841 and had seven children, six of whom are living. Henry, Abram, Mary A. (wife of Ed. Williams). Noah B., Rachel, Edwin W. C., and Lydia (Mrs. W. B. Bowman). Mr. Clemens was married April 8, 1873, to Mary M., daughter of Owen and Mary Levagood Dodge, born in Waterloo Co., Ca., April 4, 1850. They have two children: Vermellie, born Sept. 11, 1874, and Audie, born Feb. 26, 1878. Mr. Clemens came to this tp. with his parents in 1863, and now owns a farm of 120 acres on sec. 17. He is a Republican. Mrs. Clemens parents settled in Gaines in the pioneer days of 1855. Her brother, Samuel Dodge, enlisted in the late war November 1861, in Co. A., 3d Reg. Mich. Inf., and was killed at Fair Oaks. He sleeps with the heroic dead on the battlefield where he fell."

Oberholtzer. - Mary Ann Wismer Oberholtzer was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., May 20, 1844; fell asleep in Christ Feb. 26, 1926, at her home in Kitchener, Ont.; aged 81 y. 9 m. 6 d. She united with the Mennonite Church in her youth, being at least 60 years in church fellowship, and was one of its pioneer Sunday school teachers and lived to see the second generation of those she taught. Grandma greatly enjoyed the blessings of the Christian life until the day she left to be with the Lord, and she was dearly beloved by all who knew her. She was married to Isaac Oberholtzer. This union was blessed with three sons and two daughters, all of whom are living. There are also 27 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren, also 4 brothers and 2 sisters, she being the first of them to go. The date of her death was rather unique in that it fell exactly on the day of the 25th anniversary of her mother's death and the 39th anniversary of her husband's burial. Her funeral which was largely attended was held Feb. 28 at the First Mennonite Church, the services being conducted by Bro. C. F. Derstine from I Pet. 1: 3, 4, assisted by Bro. Noah Stauffer. Peace to her ashes.
