Preston (Bechtel or Hagey) Mennonite Church

The second meeting house in Waterloo County was built, probably in 1814, by John Erb, a wealthy miller of Preston. This brick meeting house served as a community church and was located "near Jacob Hagey's", which was on the road running from the top of the Kress Hill west and "adjoining the Kitchener Highway" (Witmer 1967: 26). Another meeting house, known as the Union Meeting House, was built in the area around 1824. A meeting was held in the Union church on November 20, 1824 to commence recording the accounts of the congregation in Hagey's Deacon Book. The deed of land for the Union Meeting House and burial ground, which was for one acre of part Lot 22, Beasley's Broken Front, was transacted in 1835.
Hagey Meeting House was buiilt of red brick in 1842 on part Lot 23, just north of Preston on the west side of the Breslau Road, and slightly north of the Union Meeting House site. The deed, dated February 2, 1842, recorded the purchase of the land from John Hilborn and stressed that the property was to be for "the purpose of public worship by the Mennonist Society" (Witmer 1967: 28). Joseph Bechtel was the first minister in the area, from 1804-1837; he was followed by David Sherk (1838-1843). Next came Joseph Hagey (1844-1877), who was ordained bishop in 1851, and then Jacob B. Gingrich from 1878 to 1901. Services were held every four weeks until 1890 when bi-weekly services were begun. A Sunday School was established in 1842 with the congregation of Wanner Meeting House near Hespeler, but it was discontinued because of a difference of opinion regarding the need for Sunday Schools. On April 26, 1891 a Sunday School was organized at Hagey's, with deacon Abraham Oberholtzer as superintendent. Five years later, on June 10, 1896, a Sunday School was organized at the Wanner church.
Major changes were made to the church building in 1927-1928 when the basement was excavated, new windows were installed and the roof was raised two feet. Fire on January 15, 1950 caused extensive damage to the interior and furnishings of the church. The building was completely renovated and also enlarged at the same time; dedication was on July 2, 1950. Another fire, on Feburary 19, 1953, completely destroyed the church. A congregational decision was made to build a new church, on Concession Road in Preston, and the cornerstone was laid on Thanksgiving Day, October 12, 1953. Official dedication services in the new Preston Mennonite Church were held on May 16, 1954. The building was enlarged in the summer of 1989.

G.V. Oberholtzer died last Thursday at the age of 34 years. He was the second son of Mr. John Oberholtzer. Eleven years ago, he founded a shoe factory, together with M. Armbrust, which, after the latter's death, he carried on alone and in 1893 moved to the present building near the railway station. In 1897. he built a tannery in Port Elgin. In 1881 [1891]. he married Mary Otto of South Easthope. Of his four children, two (both girls), are still alive. The deceased was an active member of Zion Church, a founder of the Y.M.C.A. here and of the orphanage. In 1896. he was a member of City Council. The burial took place on Monday, with a large attendance.

Three Berliners
Three Berliners were called away by death on Sunday. After a lengthy period of suffering from dropsy, the widow of the late E.A.P. Hagedorn of Williamsburg (deceased 28 years ago) died here. She is survived by eleven children, namely George and Herman in Williamsburg, Charles K. in Berlin, William in Paisley, Mrs. Ludolph in Waterloo Township, Mrs. Einwächter in New Dundee, Mrs. Wieland in Michigan, Mrs. Monk in Elmwood, and Mrs. Y. Stroh in Fischer's Mills, Mrs. Main in Strasburg, and Mrs. J.E. Vogt in Berlin. Burial follows on Wednesday in Mannheim.

Mrs. Clara Oberholtzer also departed here on Sunday, after suffering for five years from consumption. She was the youngest daughter of widow, Mrs. John Oberholtzer.

On Sunday, the wife of William Sherk, local resident, was called by death, as a victim of typhoid pneumonia, contracted on a recent visit to Bay City, Michigan. She was a daughter of Mrs. Gaukel, who had a shop on King Street for years. The deceased leaves her husband and a nine-year-old daughter.

ST. JACOBS - George B. Oberholtzer, 86, of St. Jacobs, died Sunday at Coutts Pavillion, Freeport Sanatorium, after a lengthy illness. Born in Kitchener on Jan. 27, 1875, he had been an employee at the Canada Felting Company Ltd. of St. Jacobs for 40 years. He was a member of Calvary Evangelical United Brethren Church, St. Jacobs. A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Oberholtzer, his first wife, the former Melissa Hallman, predeceased him in 1939. He is survived by his second wife, the former Clara McLeod, a son Earl of Winnipeg, a step-son, Rev. Wilfred McLeoad of Welland, a daughter Mrs. Harold (Florence) Trussler of Kitchener, and three grandchildren. The body is at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, Kitchener, where a funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday with Rev. C. B. Carr of Calvary Church officiating. Oberholtzer.-Issac H., son of Issac and Mary Ann (Wismer) Oberholtzer, was born in Huron Co., Ont., March 2, 1875; died at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital, in Ontario, Aug. 7, 1947, after a prolonged illness; aged 72 y. 5 m. 5 d. In his youth he joined the Mennonite Church, which he attended faithfully. He was the youngest of a family of six, four of whom predeceased him. Surviving is the oldest member of the family (David, Kitchener, Ont.) and a number of nieces and nephews. For many years he made a home for his aged widowed mother; in his later years he made a home with a niece (Mrs. MacGregor). The last three months of his life were spent in the hospital. Funeral services were held at the home and at the First Mennonite Church, Aug. 10, in charge of Merle Shantz and S. F. Coffman. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.

"Isaac H. Oberholtzer, 19 Pandora Ave., died last night at the KW Knollwood Park Hospital. A native of Howick Tp., he was born March 2, 1870, s/o the late Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Oberholtzer. Deceased had been an employee of the Barrie Glove and Knitting Co. for 40 years.

He was a member of the First Mennonite Church. One brother, David S. of Kitchener, survives him. He was predeceased by two sisters, Mary and Lydia, and one brother Joseph....."

Alfred V. Armbrust, 885 Queen's Blvd., died today at St. Mary's Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was born in Kitchener and lived here all his life. He was formerly the owner of Globe Stamping Company Ltd.

He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Mahlon Armbrust. He was a member of Zion United Church and member of Grand River Lodge A. F. and A. M. Surviving are his wife, the former Marion Dreisinger, whom he married at Elmira in 1915. One brother, Addison A. Armbrust, died in 1922, and a sister, Elsie, predeceased him.

The body will be at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home after 7 p.m. Saturday, where a funeral service will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. Rev. F. M. Faist and Rev. G. F. Barthel will conduct the service. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery. Donations to the Ontario Heart Foundation will be accepted as expressions of sympathy.
