    A. Schreiter Dies Suddenly Victim of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: Nearly Got Out of Garage

    Halifax Work Recalled

Prominent In Kitchener's Business and Fraternal Life: Funeral on Tuesday

Armand Alvin Schreiter, one of Kitchener's best known young business men died late last night or early this morning from carbon monoxide poisoning in his garage at 87 Queen St. N. Death overcame Mr. Schreiter as he was apparently endeavoring to leave the gas filled garage and had he fallen towards the partly opened garage door instead of away from it the fatality might have been avoided. Early in the evening Mr. Schreiter had driven his wife to a friend's home for a women's bridge party. He then turned home and about ten o'clock put the children to bed. It is believed that he entered the garage between 11: 30 and 11: 45 as he intended to call for his wife. Of late his car had been giving some trouble in starting and on two occasions a garage mechanic had had to be called to start it. It is believed that Mr. Schreiter thinking that he might have trouble starting the auto, left the door partly open and intended warming up the engine as he had often done before, prior to opening the doors wide owing to the cold evening and the fumes unexpectedly over came him. He had made his way from the seat of the car to the rear and in falling apparently struck the car, a gash being inflicted on the nose. The discovery was made shortly before three o'clock this morning. On returning home Mrs. Schreiter thought that her husband had been called out on business and she went to bed. On awakening and noting her husband's continued absence she went downstairs and heard the drone of a motor car engine. She immediately went to the garage and made the gruesome discovery.

    Born in this city

The late Mr. Schreiter was born in Kitchener 41 years ago on July 12, 1891. He was educated in the Kitchener public and high schools and then entered the banking business with the Bank of Nova Scotia here. Subsequently he gravitated to the furniture and undertaking business of his father with which he was connected for many years. Of late years he has been principally with the De Luxe Upholstering Co. In 1920 Mr. Schreiter married Margaret Erb, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ephraim Erb, who survives together with one son, Stanley 11, and three daughters, Hazel 9, Susan 7 and Peggy 5. Mr. Schreiter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Schreiter, one brother Herbert of this city and one sister Adele, Mrs. Walton. The late Mr. Schreiter was prominently identified in fraternal circles being a member of Grand River Lodge, the Kitchener chapter R. A. M. Valletta Preceptory and Mocha Temple, London. He was a 14th degree Scottish Shriner.

    Splendid Halifax work

When the Halifax explosion disaster of 1917 shocked this country and the world, Mr. Schreiter dropped his business here and rushed at once to the stricken city here he volunteered his services as embalmer and mortician. He assumed charge of the tragic details of embalming and burying those who met their death in the explosion. Mr. Schrieter was in the stricken community for more than a week before his work of mercy was completed and when he left he carried with him the lasting gratitude of all who passed through the shadow out of the great calamity. "Purely accidental," was the opinion of Coroner Dr. Hett who at first did not intend to have an inquest but in order to conform with legal insurance requirements later announced that an inquest would be held, the date being as yet unnamed. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at three o'clock at the Schreiter Funeral Home.
