    Historic Events
    bv Harry S. Kinzie, Blair

When Preston had a large tract of land, owned by John D. Moore, we called it the Preston Hop-fields. They brought Indians up from the Brantford reserve to pick the hops. In 1902 and 1903 they brought Indians from the Reserve to thin sugar beets and in the fall they brougt men women and children; the men pulled the beets and the women and children cut the tops off. I forgot, they didn't dare cut the top off but they twisted . the top off, sugar is at the top of the beet.

The Indians were like all other nationalities; they had some strange customs; when any of their number died they would hang them in a tree until all flesh disappeared; then they would bury them with all their hunting equipment, guns, tommy hawks, bows and arrows and flint heads. They believed in a hereafter and wanted them to be prepared to hunt in the next world. At Blair you could see the little mounds in the Indian cemetery but no memorial stone. This Indian cemetery was on Mr. James Barclay's farm. My father never allowed me to plow over this portion of the field. Mr Barclay died in 1918 and since then the farm has been owned by W. Moore and now Keefer Wilkes and I don't believe they know that field contains the first cemetery in Waterloo County; and worst of all they are working on top of it and cropping it. I think we should show a little respect for the burial ground of our first North American settlers. Maybe in the future they will want to show or honor this little burial plot; perhaps make a park out of it and at present there are less than two or three that remember the parcel of land that contains the remains of some Indian Chiefs and one of our first white fur trader; including his wife and family; Mr. and Mrs. Nathaniel Dodge, who desired to be buried with their Indian Chiefs with whom he traded. Mr. Nathaniel Dodge was a very eccentric sort of man. According to some books in past history Mr. Dodge was still alive in 1849. He had made some purchases in a day book in my possession.
