Robert Neilson - A wide circle of friends will hear with much regret of the death on June 8th of Robert Neilson of Lily, Brook Farm, Orange, Conn. Though it is many years since he left Ayr, he retained great interest in the village and kept, closely in touch with it by frequent visits. The late Mr. Neilson was born in Doune, Scotland, and came to Ayr as a young man, and for many years was in charge of the office of the Goldie Mills. Later, he went to Montreal, where he was assistant treasurer of the Lake of the Woods Milling Co. Retiring about eleven years ago, he bought a place in Orange, Conn., spending his summers there with his garden as great interest, his winters in California. He had travelled extensively, read widely and had great interest in world affairs. The older people of the village will remember him as a member for many of both School and Public Library Boards; also as an ardent curler. He is survived by two sisters, Miss Elizabeth Neilson and Miss Jean Neilson of Orange. Conn., and one brother, Dr. William Allan Neilson, President of Smith College, Northampton, Mass. Service was held last week in Orange. Final Interment will be in Ayr.

Miss Jean Neilson, Former Ayr Resident

Older residents of the community will learn with regret of the death in New Haven, Conn., on Friday, May 13th, of Miss Jean Neilson, following a lengthy illness. The late Miss Neilson came here from Scotland in the late '80's with her mother, sister and brother to join another brother, Robert Neilson, who occupied an important position with the Goldie Milling Company. They resided in the house now occupied by Dr. and Mrs. J. H. Caulfield. She trained as a nurse in the old Toronto General Hospital and practised her profession in Toronto, Montreal and Boston. Years later, when her brother Robert retired from the Lake of the Woods Milling Company in Montreal, where he had taken a position following the sale of the Goldie mill, she moved with him and her sister to Orange, Conn. A brother, William Allan Neilson, was in that community as president of Smith College. Since the death of their brothers, the Misses Neilson have lived in New Haven. Her sister, Miss Elizabeth V., is the last surviving member of this distinguished family, and celebrated her 96th birthday on May 2. Some senior citizens may recall when she taught music in this village years ago.
