Notes:
Henry S. Böhmer
In recent days, death reaped a wealthy harvest in Berlin and area. At noon Saturday, Henry S. Balmer, one of the most prominent citizens of our town passed away. He was born in 1836 on a farm near Berlin, and came to Berlin 36 years ago. He ran a store on the spot where Beck and Schell's shop now stands, and from whose beginnings, gradually, the present Böhmer Company developed. The deceased, in addition, belonged to several other industrial organizations, was active in the expansion of Berlin and had, on his own, approximately 50 residences and other buildings constructed here. He was on city council for two years. His first wife was Anna Oberholtzer, who passed away about 14 years ago. Several years ago, he married Mrs. Margaretha Guth of Milwaukee, Wisc., who survives him, as well as five children from the first marriage, as well as five brothers and one sister. The burial was to have taken place on Tuesday afternoon, after a service in the German Baptist Church, but had to be postponed, because several relatives only reached Berlin late in the evening, because of the snow-fall.

Henry S. Boehmer and Associates
Henry S. Boehmer, merchant, began business at 16 East King Street, in a store 16 x 20 feet, in 1868. He and his brothers Charles and Philip erected the Dunke block, and in association with them and his brothers August and Herman, the block at 58-62 East King Street. At various times, his four brothers and P. S. Lautenschlager were partners of the store enterprise; and later on, E. D. Lang, Julius Appel, and his sons, A. O. and E. O. Boehmer. The firm dealt in dry-goods and became one of the chief mercantile houses in the county. Mr. H. S. Boehmer broke ground in Alma Street and built six houses in it. Elsewhere in the town he erected upward of fifty homes. At the time of his death he was President of the Dominion Table Company, and a director of the Berlin Piano Company and J. Y. Shantz & Sons. On his deathbed he was told of the Wellesley Railway by-law, just voted on, having lacked three votes of the necessary majority. "What a pity," said he, "I have three votes that would have carried it."

THE WINDMILL
A feature of many years of the southerly end of the village was a windmill, on what was known as Mecklenburg Hill, near the westerly corner of Church and Albert streets. This was the project of a company composed of Jacob Y. Shantz, Henry Boehmer and others. It was built in 1860 by Frederick Rickerman who was the originator of the idea. Rickerman was familiar with windmills and had operated one in Germany. The structure was about sixty feet high, hexagonal in plan, with each of the four wings or sails about 45 feet long by 6 feet wide. A vertical centre beam meshing with the topcross shaft extended down to the main floor of the mill and there operated three sets of stones. The revolving top carried the cross-shaft, on which the wings were mounted, and could be set for the Wind by means of a Windlass. An outer platform was at the height of' the wing length from the top shaft. From this the wings or arms could be worked on, and their canvas covering put in place. Particular excellence was claimed for the flour from this mill. The author remembers eating bread baked from the first flour it produced.

SUDDEN DEATH OF MRS. RHINEHARDT DUNKE IN CHICAGO
An Esteemed Lady Gone to her Eternal Rest
Mrs. Dunke, the esteemed wife of Mr. Rhinehardt Dunke, of the well-known grocer firm in Berlin, died suddenly Monday afternoon in Chicago, where she had gone to a hospital in that city for treatment a week ago to-day. Mrs. Dunke had been ill for six months and her son Mr. C.B. Dunke, accompanied her to that city. After leaving Berlin nothing was heard from them until Monday morning when Mr. Dunke received a telegram informing him that his wife was rapidly sinking and asking for him to come over at once. A second telegram informed the family of her death. The word of Mrs. Dunke's decease caused sorrow among a wide circle of friends, who respected her very highly for her many kind and neighborly ways. Besides her husband, two sons, Mr. C.B. Dunke, a member of the Town Council and Mr. E.B. Dunke, a member of the grocer firm, and two daughters, Miss Ida and Miss...

August and Charles Boehmer in the sixties owned a hardware, stove and tinware store at 58 East King Street. In 1874, they began manufacturing paper boxes, after selling the hardware stock to C. E. Moyer and the tinware shop to Peter and Henry Hymmen. Hymmen Bros. first leased quarters in the Canadian block from J. Y. Shantz, and later on in the Germania block. Hardware and plumbing were added to their lines. In 1892, Peter Hymmen bought his brother's share. In 1906, he opened up West King Street as a business section, erecting a large block at No. 158. Mr. Hymmen was active until shortly before his death in 1930. Prior to his departure, his sons, H. I.. Hymmen and Homer Hymmen, had been their father's associates and now direct the enterprise. After Henry Hymmen left the firm he was for four years with H. Wolfhard & Co., and then bought C. E. Moyer's hardware stock. He carried on in the Dunke block until 1900, when he was appointed superintendent of the waterworks. George Potter, who for many years had been with John Fennell & Son, bought Mr. Hymmen's stock, and is still doing business at the old stand.

NATURE'S NOBLE MAN CALLED HOME
DEATH OF AUGUST BOEHMER IS MOURNED BY BERLIN CITIZENS AT LARGE
SURVIVED OPERATION ONLY A FEW HOURS
The death of Mr. August Boehmer, 92 Queen St. North, which took place at the Berlin and Waterloo Hospital about four o'clock on Tuesday afternoon, has cast a gloom over the town, for the deceased was respected as one of the most honorable and useful citizens of Berlin.
Mr. Boehmer had been unwell for a little over a year and diagnosis revealed the presence of a growth in the abdomen. Of late he had been failing more rapidly as the best medical skill could not check the affliction. However with his characteristic adherence to duty he came down town each morning to get the mail and then went out to the factory on Water Street. But on Friday he was compelled to leave his business duties and since then was confined to his room. His condition fast grew more serious and as the only resort which would possibly prolong or save his life an operation to remove the obstruction, was decided upon. But he was too weak, and the trouble was too far advanced. His system could not stand the shock. Though the operation was successful, and though he rallied and expressed himself as greatly relieved from the pain he had been suffering, he could not survive and passed away about three hours after the operation had been performed.
The hour of the funeral has been fixed at two o'clock on Friday, from the family residence, 92 Queen St. North, to the Benton Street Baptist Church and Mount Hope Cemetery.
The last August Boehmer, who passed away in his 62nd year, was a native of this township - practically of Berlin.
He was a son of Henry Boehmer and was born about a mile out of the corporation limits, on the Mannheim Road. He received his education in the Berlin schools and early I life entered business as a general merchant. Later he conducted a hardware business, and about 35 years ago he and his brother Charles entered into partnership as A & C Boehmer in the manufacture of paper boxes. They have been eminently successful and are well-to-do.
38 years ago the late Mr. Boehmer was married to Catharine Kalbfleisch, who, with a family of nine children, survive. They are Mrs. H. Jarvis, of Cleveland, Norman, George, Mrs. H. Hymmen, Arthur, Oscar, Edna, Gertrude and Emma, all of Berlin. The four surviving brothers are Charles, Reinhart, Philip and Herman, all of Berlin.
A good character is a man's best asset. That was Mr. Boehmer's sincere belief and he lived to it. When he made a promise it was fulfilled. He was sincere and he wanted others to be true to him in word and in deed. He was the very soul of conscientiousness and those who knew him best respected him most highly.
A neighbor and friend this morning paid a tribute to his memory as follows:
"August was an intimate friend and companion of mine. He was one of the most exact men I ever knew. Everything with him was done in order and in season. Anything he said "Yes" to, stood as long as life. There was no coming around next day with excuses to back away. He never started anything that he did not finish, and then he was ready to pay for it. Berlin loses one of its finest types of citizens in his death."
Mr. Boehmer was a believer in, and advocate of the principle of Protection of Canadian industries, but was not actively connected with any political movement. He was a man of most retiring disposition a great lover of home. Very seldom did he leave it evenings, and it was something most exceptional indeed that kept him from retiring at nine o'clock.
He has been for many years an active worker in the Benton St. Baptist Church and a most liberal contributor to its work. but his giving was always unostentatious.
His memory will long be honored; his good name revered as a man of whom it can be truly said in the language of the poet Pope: -
"An honest man's the noblest work of God."
To the bereaved widow and members of the family this News Record extends its condolences in this hour of bereavement and affliction.

In the death of the late Mr. August Boehmer, which took place at the Berlin-Waterloo Hospital on Tuesday alternoon, Berlin his lost one of its most valuable and esteemed citizens. The deceased has been in ill- health for about a year, suffering from a growth in the stomach but he has been able to be about until last Friday afternoon when he took to his bed. After a consultation the physicians decided that his only hope for recovery was to undergo an operation which he consented to. The operation was performed about noon Tuesday but owing to the serious condition of the bowels he was unable to pull through and death relieved him of his sufferings about 3.45 o'clock.

Charles B. Dunke
Was in Business Nearly 50 years
Veteran Grocery Merchant, ill only few days, was in his 77th year
Ill only since Wednesday, Charles B. Dunke, 73 Benton St., a merchant for nearly 50 years in this city, retiring only last December died at his residence today in his 77th year. Mr. Dunke was born on a farm near Berlin in 1861, a son of the late Reinhart Dunke and Lena Boehmer. He was married on Sept. 2, 1886 to Miss Emma L. Weaver, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Amos Weaver, by Rev. G. Plowman at United Brethren Church. On Sept 2, 1936, they observed their golden wedding anniversary. The year after he was married he established his grocery business on King St. from which he retired at the end of 1936, after nearly 50 years of continued activity. He had the distinction of having been in business longer than any other King St. merchant. The deceased in five decades of business saw many changes in the city. When he first opened his store King St. was a gravel road, he saw the first pavement constructed, the street railway built, and the waterworks established. When he was of the younger merchants, streets and stores were lighted by coal oil lamps and each night at sun down business men of the day paused a moment watching for the lamp lighter to make his rounds. Mr. Dunke also experienced a great revolution in the grocery business since the day when he opened his store. At that time farmers dealings with the store were all in the way of trading. Today, although not eliminated, this system has been greatly curtailed. The deceased also served the community in a public capacity, having been a member of city council at various times. He was an active member of Benton St. Baptist Church, of which he was a former trustee. Surviving are his widow, two daughters, Mrs. E.E. Jacques, Colbourg, Mrs. I. G. Imrie, Kitchener, one son Kenneth, Toronto, one brother, Edwin Dunke, Kitchener, one sister, Ida Dunke, also of Kitchener and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held from the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home on Monday afternoon at 2: 30 to Mount Hope Cemetery for interment.

Gun Discharged As Boy Examined It Causing His Death - Fifteen Year Old Joseph Lang Victim In Kitchener Home; Lived But Three Minutes
Boys Discussing Hunting - Joseph Lang, aged 15, of Esra Ave., Waterloo, was fatally shot last night about 8 o'clock at the home of W.C. Wiegandt, 60 Bingeman Street, when a rifle which he was examining suddenly discharged, the bullet taking a course from the left side just above his collar bone coming out on the opposite side. The lad lived only two or three minutes. Dr. McGregor was summoned but the boy was dead when he arrived. Coroner Kalbfleisch was also called. According to the story told the police young Lange was visiting at the Wiegandt home last evening. He was in the cellar with young Wiegandt aged 14 and apparently the two were discussing a hunting trip with which young Wiegandt had with his father Saturday afternoon. It is believed Lang asked to see the gun and the Wiegandt boy pointed to where the rifle was standing in a corner of the furnace cellar covered over by paper. The Lang boy went to the rifle and taking hold of it started to examine the gun when it exploded, the 22 caliber bullet with which it was loaded passing thru his neck and severing important blood vessels along the route it traveled. Young Lang dropped the gun and walked about eight feet to the cellar steps where he sat down and a moment later collapsed in death. Coroner Kalbfleisch stated he was satisfied the fatality was purely accidental after a thorough investigation. There will be no inquest. Brother Died Recently: (image ends here)

ACCIDENTAL DEATH IS VERDICT AT HYMMEN INQUEST
The coroner's jury which met Friday brought in a verdict that the accident at the Lancaster St. crossing where Ward Hymmen and Mrs. Homer Hymmen were fatally injured when struck by a C. N. R. railway train was accidental and that no blame could be attached to anyone. It was the opinion of the jury that owing to the heavy motor traffic on Lancaster St. and taking into consideration the number of accidents that have occurred at this crossing, this jury request the crown attorney to ask the Dominion Railway board to provide more adequate protection as soon as possible. Members of the train, Homer Hymmen, Drs. Gillespie and Hamilton and several others gave evidence.

_____________
Pat Boehmer played hockey and baseball
H.E Patrick (Pat) Boehmer, known for his hockey and baseball exploits as a young man, died at his Kitchener home on the weekend after a battle with cancer. He was 63.
In the 1940s, Boehmer played goal for a famous hockey squad from St. Michael's College at the University of Toronto, which produced such hockey luminaries as Maple Leaf coach Red Kelly, Detroit Red Wing Ted Lindsay, and Father David Bauer, founder of the Canadian Olympic Team. Boehmer was a team member when St. Michael's won the Memorial Cup in 1945.
But that wasn't Boehmer's last championship. He did stints with the Pittsburgh Hornets of the American Hockey League in 1946, the Hollywood Wolves of the Western Hockey League in 1947, and in 1948-49 he played for the Boston Olympics of the Eastern Hockey League. In 1950, he was a member of the Toronto Marlboroughs, which won the Allan Cup that year
Boehmer's winning ways in hockey continued after his playing career ended. He served as president of the K-W Dutchmen Senior Hockey Club, which was selected to represent Canada in the Winter Olympics, capturing a bronze medal in the 1956 games at Cortina, Italy, and a silver medal at Squaw Valley in 1960.
"I remember there was a lot of excitement and listening to the games on the radio," Boehmer's son Michael said. "The Dutchmen were a hot item at the time."
Boehmer was as adept on the baseball diamond as he was on the ice. He pitched for the Kitchener Legionaires, leading them to Ontario championships in 1947 and 1948.
Michael Boehmer recalled that while his father was with the Boston Olympics hockey club, he used to keep his pitching arm in shape by working out at Fenway Park with the Red Sox, which at time included baseball legend Ted Williams.
In later years, Boehmer worked at the family business, Boehmer's fuel oil and heating company.
Michael Boehmer said his father was a religious man, and was a member of St. John's Roman Catholic Church.
In addition to Michael, Boehmer is survived by sons Mark, Paul and Kevin, and daughter Patricia Cosgrove. He was predeceased by his wife, Carol, three years ago.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. John's RC Church on Strange Street at 11 am. Wednesday. The mass will be said by Rev. Bob Liddy of St. John's and Rev. Ted McLean, a friend who played hockey with Boehmer at St. Michael's.
The family is asking that expressions of sympathy be made to the Father David Bauer Foundation.
