NABBED IN ST. PAUL
Arrest of John E. Herris, Who is Wanted in Berlin for Numerous Forgeries.
The St. Paul Pioneer Press of the 6th says: - "The incoming 6: 30 train on the Northern Pacific Road last evening brought upon it J.W. Murray, Chief of the Provincial Detective Department, Ontario, Canada, who had in his custody John Kizer Herris, who is wanted in Berlin, Ontario, for numerous forgeries. The arrest of Herris is one of the most important made this year, and it was only after several weeks hunt that his whereabouts was ascertained. Herris was formerly in the employ of Hughes Bros., wholesale dry goods merchants at Toronto, and is the son of the tanner living near Berlin, Ontario. He is a German about 28 years of age, and is looked upon as a shrewd young man. The crime for which he is under arrest is the forging of several notes upon the Imperial Bank of Galt, County of Waterloo, aggregating in amount to over $3,000, which were committed on June 13th and 14th inst. After being traced from that place to Minnesota, United States Marshal W.M. Campbell was notified, and succeeded in locating his man at St. Cloud. Chief Murray came on immediately, and traced Herris from St. Cloud to Little Falls and from there to various parts of the State until he was found in a small hamlet near Royalton teaching a German school under the name of Walker. He was arrested by the Sheriff of Morrison County and brought by Chief Murray to St. Paul, where Marshal Campbell placed him in the county gaol for safe keeping. When arrested Herris denied any knowledge of the affair, and claimed that his name is Walker, but Chief Murray is positive he is the man wanted. The extradition has been commenced. Herris will be brought before United States Commissioner Spencer for examination this morning, and there is no doubt that he will be remanded to await the arrival of the necessary papers. When discharged by Hughes Bros., Herris' accounts were found to be wrong, and it is said that forgeries which he has committed before the present cases have been hushed up by his father. He is the second Canadian arrested for forgery in Minnesota during the last two months."
WHAT THE IMPERIAL BANK MANAGER SAYS
Messrs. Hughes Bros. were seen in reference to the above. They said that as far as they remembered they knew nothing wrong about Herris. The manager of the Imperial Bank was also seen, and stated the amount of the forgery was not quite as large as given by the Pioneer Press. The forgeries would amount to about $700. It had cost them a lot of money to trace Herris, but they were determined to bring everyone who committed a forgery on their bank to justice if they had to follow him around the world. Herris had been in business near Berlin with his father, John Herris, as partner. The young man obtained money on drafts which he made himself and signed other parties names to them.
