Jacob Mosser, "was one of the early pioneer settlers of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, to which his father had moved from Switzerland at a very early date. We find that they were members of the Mennonite faith which may have been the cause of their settling in Lancaster County. At so late a date and in the absence of all records it is hard to obtain all the desired information pertaining to this family. We could not obtain names of parents of Jacob. Tradition has it that his name was Peter and that he emigrated to America about the year 1754. His family is said to have consisted of seven or eight children. We know the names of two, namely: Anna, born February 8th, 1748, and died May 8th, 1823, who was married to old Henry Wanner (See Henry Wanner's family), and Jacob, who was born about the year 1751. He resided in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and was married and had a family. The names of two of the children were Jacob and Peter. Of Jacob we have no information, quite likely his descendants are yet residing in Lancaster and adjoining counties of Pennsylvania. Of Peter we have more information"

Sad Affair near Hespeler

A most melancholy event took place on Sunday morning near the R.R. track about 1-1/2 miles above Hespeler. An old man said to be about 86 years of age of the name of Musser, occupied two apartments by himself, contiguous to the farm house in which his daughter, son-in-law and family resided. It was customary for some of the family before retiring for the night to visit the old man's rooms. On looking in on Sunday night at bedtime, he was found asleep and left undisturbed. About 2 o'clock on Sunday morning the family was aroused by the scream of one of the children who had been awaked by the suffocating influence of smoke in the house. They had barely time to make their escape from the house before it was enveloped in flames, and without securing even sufficient clothing. The rooms occupied by the old man were already burnt down, and on Dr. Swan, being called, all that could be found of the old man were a few charred bones, which were collected into a box of about a foot square. The fire is supposed to have been entirely accidental, but how it originated cannot be ascertained. Dr. Swan supposes from the remains of the old man being found near the door of the apartment in which he slept, that he had been suffocated and fallen down in an attempt to gain the door. An inquest was held on Monday when a verdict in accordance with the above facts were returned.

LINWOOD— An esteemed resident of the village for twenty years, Jacob Mosser, aged 86, died at his home Tuesday. He was born in Preston, lived in the west for many years, returning to Preston and then to Linwood. Twice married, his first wife, Lena Bresch, died in 1895, and a second wife, Sarah Gilliland, three months ago. There are two children, Mrs. Rose McKay, Victoria, B.C., and a son, Andrew, of Preston. Funeral services were held on Thursday at the Walsh Funeral Home, Waterloo, thence to Preston for interment. Rev. A. A. Laing of Linwood United Church officiated.

Wanner Mennonite Church
Begun: 1829

A small wooden meeting house was built in 1829 on a corner of the farm belonging to Samuel Bechtel which was located in the vicinity of the present-day regional headquarters of the Ministry of Natural Resources near the intersection of Highways 24 and 401. The site for this community meeting house, as well as a school and a burial ground, had been chosen on August 8, 1829. The land was donated by Samuel Bechtel and his wife Barbara (Baumann) on March 15, 1830. A new meeting house, of white brick, was built in 1837 on the east side of Henry Wanner's farm, somewhat north of the first meeting house. Meetings at first were held every eight weeks. The deed of land for the meeting house known as Wanner's was dated October 15, 1837. Early preachers were David Sherk, who had been ordained by Benjamin Eby in July 1837, Jacob Bretz, Jr., and Joseph Hagey.
Joseph Hagey was ordained bishop in 1851. During his time divisions occurred in the church by a surge of enthusiasm for a Methodist form of revivalism. Solomon Eby of Port Elgin, who announced his own conversion in December 1869, was leader of a group which believed that members could be converted through participation in revival meetings. John Baer of Wanner's became associated with Solomon Eby, and was compelled to leave the church in the spring of 1874, as were Eby and his other followers. The new church movement resulted in organization conferences which culminated in the conference on March 23, 1875 at Bloomingdale where New Mennonites and Reforming (or Reformed) Mennonites joined together as United Mennonites. The United Mennonites favored revival meetings, Sunday Schools and prayer meetings, and were opposed to the use of alcohol and tobacco.
The date of construction of the meeting house which replaced the one built in 1837 is somewhat in doubt. It is possible that a new building was erected in the early 1870s; it is also possible that the 1837 building only underwent extensive renovations at that time. There is no doubt, however, that a new brown brick church was built in 1938. An education wing was added in 1969.
The earliest Mennonite Sunday School in North America was begun in 1842 and was held jointly by the Wanner and Hagey Meeting Houses. It was discontinued after a short time because of a division of opinion within the congregations. An attempt was made later, in the mid-1860s, to begin another Sunday School, but this, too, did not last long. Many years later, on June 10, 1896, a meeting was held to organize a Sunday School. DETWEILER.-On the 15th of December, in Bloomingdale, Waterloo Co., Ontario, Bro. Rudolph Detweiler, aged 82 years, 4 months and 6 days. He was born on the 9th of August 1807 in Montgomery Co., Pa. His father and grandfather were also called Rudolph. He was married on the 8th of July 1832 to Susan Bingeman who now survives him, but who is much afflicted and entirely helpless. They had 6 sons and 8 daughters, all of whom except one, are living, and there were 63 grandchildren, 47 living, and 14 great-grandchildren-3 living. May God bless the aged widowed sister and her children in their bereavement.

An Old Settler Dead. There died at his home, on Monday evening, about two miles south of Elmira, in his 89th year, Mr Henry Musser, one of the earliest settlers in this township...He was married to one Pauline Reist and raised a large family, eight of whom are living in this immediate neighborhood. The sons are, Henry, Peter and Samuel, and the daughters are, Mrs. Dan Gingrich, of Winfield, Mrs. John Lackner, and Susan, Fanny and Maria, living on the old homestead...His remains will be interred in the old Mennonite Cemetery, at Elmira

Wambold.--Died at Breslau, Ont., of the infirmities of old age, with influenza, Hannah Wambold, relict of the late Abraham Wambold, on Mar. 20, 1911; aged 87 y. 9 m. 20 d. After the death of her husband with whom she lived 56 years, she lived with her daughter Hannah. In her girlhood days she gave herself to God. She was the mother of 13 children, 6 surviving, over whom she always had a watchful concern for their spiritual welfare, as also of her grandchildren, of whom 35 survive and 34 great-grandchildren. She was able to help herself to within four days of her death, her mind was clear until death overtook her, and often expressed a willingness to go with Him for whom she strove. Isaac Groh, "the second youngest son of John and Susannah (Wanner) Groh, was born on the farm on which he now resides, situated a little more than a mile south-west of Hespeler, March 14th, 1829. He is the possessor of over 200 acres of land. Upwards of nearly half a century Mr. Groh's name has been connected with those whose object is to elevate and advance the cause of their fellow citizens. During the years 1877-78 he served the municipality of Waterloo Township as councilor. In 1879 he was first deputy reeve, and for the years 1880-83 he was reeve for the township. At the close of the year 1883 he, not wishing to be re-elected, retired from taking any interest in municipal matters. By the request and urging of his numerous friends, he again allowed himself to be elected as reeve for the township for the year 1889, at the close of which he again retired. He is still quite healthy and active, and could, if required, give a strong helping hand in managing municipal matters pertaining to the township. In politics he advocates the principles of the Reform party. On May 9th, 1848, he was married to Mary, daughter of Tobias and Catharine (Stryker) Wanner. She was born November 10th, 1828. They have had a family of eleven children"

Isaac Groh, Reeve of the Township of Waterloo, was born on the farm where he now resides, in the south-eastern portion of the township, fifty-two years ago. His ancestors were among the pioneers of the township, the family first coming hither from Pennsylvania in 1804, since which date they have been closely identified with the material affairs of this part of Waterloo, and of the community in general. Mr. Isaac Groh's entire life has been spent amid the scenes which now surround him, where, since attaining to man's estate, he has held a place of prominence among those whose efforts have been directed to the furtherance of local interests. He has served five years in the township Council, during the past two of which he has occupied the Reeve's chair.
