Fred Wylie C. H. Weber Grocery 1921 - 1974 One of Elmira's earliest buildings is the lathe and mortar house of Fred and Wilma Wylie at 75 Arthur St. S., tucked in between the Woolwich Information Centre and dentist Dr. Mason's office. It has been owned by different members of Wilma's family since the land was divided into town lots, and the house was built on it soon after. Working in factories for several years, Wilma's father, Clarence Henning Weber, a Balsam Grove lad, opened a little grocery store at 77 Arthur St. S. which he had bought two years before. He spruced up an empty old wooden building that had once been owned by his paternal great-uncle Augustus Blatz, a shoemaker and repairman, and enlarged the premises in 1924-25 by extending it out the back. Soon after, he installed electric refrigeration for dairy and meat counters, the first one in Elmira to do so. Of the three Weber children, Wilma loved to work in the store the most. They were all busy with customers until closing time at 7: 30 every evening, plus Saturday until midnight. Even when she worked at the Elmira Shirt Factory, she was eager to get home and work in the store and meet the customers. In 1947 she married Fred Wylie, an Irish RAF war veteran who joined the family in running the business.
