    Barber and Bowler Edward Engel Dies

    Edward Engel of 60 Regina St. N., Waterloo, a prominent Twin City businessman and noted lawn bowler, died at his home today. He was 84. Mr. Engel was born in Waterloo, Nov. 11, 1885, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Engel. He lived all his life in Waterloo and operated a barber shop there for more than 40 years. He was a member of the Waterloo Germania Lodge, the Imperial Order of Foresters and the Waterloo Lawn Bowling Club. An avid lawn bowler, Mr. Engel won the Ontario singles championship, the Ontario doubles championship in 1946 and 1951 and the Canadian rinks championship in 1960, with teammates Lloyd Moser, Roy Reidel and Joseph Dorsch. Prior to taking up lawn bowling, he played baseball with the Waterloo Beavers in 1907 and 1908 and Ontario Hockey Association junior and intermediate hockey in the left wing position for about 10 years. Surviving are his second wife, the former Hilda (Schweitzer) Weber; and two sisters, Mrs. William (Alma) Weber and Mrs. Walter (Mary) Gedig, both of Kitchener. He was predeceased by his first wife, the former Olive Forler; three brothers and three sisters. The body is at the Edward R. Good Funeral Home, Waterloo, where a funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 1:30 p.m. by Rev. Marvyn Dubrick of St. John's Lutheran Church, Waterloo. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery. Donations to the building fund of St. John's Lutheran Church or the Ontario Heart Foundation will be accepted as expressions of sympathy.
