Bud Heimrich Loses Life in Plane Crash

Popular Flier, 20, Killed at Edenvale; Collegiate Graduate

An airplane crash at Edenvale yesterday afternoon claimed the life of a popular young Kitchener flier, LAC. John "Bud" Gilchrist Heimrich, 20, of 66 Church Street.

A flying enthusiast for LAC. Heimrich enlisted years, in the R.C.A.F. a year ago in August and, would have received his pilot's wings in another three weeks.

    BORN IN CITY

The accident adds still another name to the growing list of Twin City war casualties. More than 60 K-W men, most of them airmen, have been killed or reported missing in the four years of war.

A son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl J. Heimrich, "Bud" was born in Kitchener. He attended Victoria and Suddaby schools and graduated from the K-W Collegiate with his senior matriculation. After a year at McMaster University, he joined the air force.

The young airman was active in young people's work. He was a member of the Pan Politae Y.M.C.A. Club and Trinity United Church. Details of the accident are not known although an Edenvale farmer saw his low-flying plane and a few minutes later heard it crash. An inquest is being held.

    NEAR END OF TRAINING

LAC. Heimrich trained first at Sky Harbor Airport, Goderich, and later at Camp Borden. He was transferred to Edenvale only a week ago to complete his training.

Survivors are his parents, his grandmother, Mrs. Alice Heimrich of Stratford and a sister Dorothy at home.

Funeral service will be public Saturday afternoon at Trinity United Church at 1:30 p.m. with interment in Woodland Cemetery. Rev. E. O. Seymour will officate. Remains will rest at the Schreiter-Sandrock Funeral Home until the time of the church service.

Friends are asked to pay their respects prior to the time of the service.

    Wings Posthumously Awarded to Father

Wings for which his son had worked so hard to wear with honor were presented posthumously at Camp Borden last Friday to Carl J. Heimrich of this city, father of the late LAC. John "Bud" Heimrich, who lost his life in a flying accident at Edenvale on Sept. 22.

The presentation was made at the wings parade by Group Captain C. Carling Kelly, O.C. No. 1 S.F.T.S., R.C.A.F.

The parade was the one at which the popular Kitchener boy would have received his wings for himself had it not been for the tragedy which cost him his life only a few short days before.
