J. W. HUEHNERGARD

There is probably no citizen in any neighborhood more popular than is the subject of this sketch in this community. Being liberal hearted and always ready and willing to do a good turn for a neighbor or friend has won him this position among his fellow men. Mr. Huehnergard was born near Heidelberg in 1861 His birtbplace was on the farm where he passed the days of his youth. He has been in business here about eleven years with the exception of a short time he was keeping hotel in Newton, and prior to keeping hotel in Heidelberg he kept jewelry store here. The former is his present occupation and in which he is having good success. He was married in 1882 to Miss Caroline, daughter of Mr. H. K. Hahn, the well known cattle-buyer of this place. They have a family of eight children Mr. Huehnergard was also engaged in the mercantile business in Ebsville, being there about two years. There is one characteristic prominent in Mr Huehnergard that is lacking in many of those who furnish accommodation and entertainment for the travelling public. In his barroom is an aquarium containing aquatic plants and fish of the Gorman carp species lazily swimming about. He also has a number of gold fish, and several native bobolinks which he secured when they were quite young. These birds have been successfully domesticated, and in the midst of winter those enjoying the warmth of the place will be reminded of green meadows and bright June mornings by their sweet warblings. There are also several fine canaries. To lend additional attraction to the aquarium on special occasions Mr. Huehnergard has a miniature fountain in the centre, the water being derived from a small tank placed on a shelf several feet above. He has also several curious Indian relics lying around. He is also quite a successful pigeon fancier, having now a number of fine specimens of the pouter species. With these he has carried off prizes at Hamilton, London, Ingersoll, Galt and Guelph. Last season at the latter place he was awarded a diploma for the best pair of pigeons on exhibition.

For the past five years Mr. Huehnergard has been the leader of the Heidelberg cornet band, which, through his efforts, has become one of the leading amateur musical organizations of Western Ontario. His house is a popular resort, being constructed in a manner to draw public patronage.

HEIDELBERG, July 27 \endash The death of Mrs. Valentine Heimpel occurred at ten o'clock yesterday morning at her home, a small farm on the Hessen Strass, two miles this side of Bamberg, after an illness of three years. She was a member of the Heidelberg Lutheran Church. A daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Heinrich, she was born near Bamberg and lived in that district all her life. Surviving are her husband, Valentine Heimpel; one son, Norman, Kitchener; one brother, John Heinrich of Bamberg; five sisters, Mrs. Manes of Kitchener, Mrs. Jacob Schaefer of Heidelberg, Mrs. John Jacobi of Erbsville, Mrs. Charles Atick of Michigan, Mrs. John Grene of Bamberg; and two grandchildren. Mrs. John Jacobi, 66, Hesson road, died suddenly of a heart attack early this morning. She had been In failing health for a number of years Mrs Jacobi was born in Waterloo township, but was a resident of Wellesley township practically all her life. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran church, Erbsville.

Mrs. Jacobi is survived by her husband, two daughters, Mrs. Willam Schneider, Wellesley township, and Mrs. Angus Heimpel of near Heidelberg: one son, Harvey at home, one brother, John Heinrich, Hesson road, and one sister, Mrs. John Gremm, Wellesley

The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence to St. Paul's Lutheran church, Erbaville, for service at 2.30. Interment will take place in Heidelberg Lutheran cemetery. Rev. H. J. Lamack, former pastor of St. Paul's church, will conduct the services.

J. Albert Steiss of 61 Ezra Ave., Waterloo, died Monday at K-W Hospital. He was 93.

The last surviving member of his family, Mrs. Steiss was born Nov. 12, 1876, at Heidelberg, son of the late Adam Steiss and Elizabeth Huehnergard. He moved to Waterloo in 1959.

For many years he was treasurer of Woolwich Township and had been retired for 11 years. He was a member of Emmanuel United Church, Waterloo.

His wife, the former Ada Weber, died in 1963. He was also predeceased by a son, Earl, in 1955 and by three brothers and three sisters. Surviving are two grandchildren.

The body is at the Edward R. Good funeral Home, Waterloo, where the funeral service will be held Thursday at 2 pm. Rev. W. H. H. Stewart of Emmanuel Church will officiate and burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Heidelberg.

The death occurred at Waterloo n Monday morning of Mrs. Clara Elisabeth Hass (nee Steiss) wife of Mr. Herman Hass. She had reached the age of 38 years, 2 months and 7 days. Deceased had been in poor health for the past four years. Mrs. Hass was born in Heidelberg on January 19th, 1879. She was married about 13 years ago and has lived in Waterloo during that time.

The deceased is survived by her mother; one sister, Mrs. H. G. Hahn, of Tavistock, and four brothers, John, of Kitchener; Oscar, of Tavistock; Albert, of Heidelberg; and William, of Toronto. Her father and one sister, Mrs. (Rev.) Zarnke, predeceased her, the former about 12 years ago and the latter about eight years ago.

The funeral was held from the late residence on Thursday afternoon, to St. John's Lutheran Church for service. Interment was made in the Heidelberg Cemetery.

Man Injured By Runaway Horse Dies

Struck down by a runaway milk-wagon horse on July 24, Norman Heimpel, 56, of 200 Benton St., died of injuries today in Toronto General Hospital.

The horse, in its headlong flight through the city, bowled Mr. Heimpel over at King and Victoria Streets, and the wagon wheels passed over him.

Suffered Skull Fracture

He was admitted to hospital suffering a skull fracture and face cuts.

In that same dash, the bolting horse fled from the corner of King and Mt. Hope Streets and clipped three cars as well as striking Mr. Heimpel before coming to a halt.

Born Dec, 21, 1893, at Hesson Road, Mr. Heimpel was a son of the late Valentine Heimpel and the former Elizabeth Heinrich.

He was employed at Merchants Rubber factory here. He attended St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. Family Survives Besides his wife, the former Elma Huehn, whom he married at Heidelberg on Feb. 24„1914, he Is survived by one son, Oliver of Kitchener; and one daughter, Mrs. Alex (Elsie) Fehrenbach, also of Kitchener; and one granddaughter.

Private funeral service for the relatives will be held Monday, 1:45 p.m., at the Schreiter Sand-rock Funeral Home with public service in St. Matthew's Lutheran Church at 2 p.m., with Rev. Dr. H. T. Lehmann officiating. Burial will be in Heidelberg Cemetery. The body is resting at the funeral home.

Injuries By Horse Prove Fatal To Man

Norman Heimpel, 56, of 200 Benton St., Kitchener, died of injuries late last week, which he received last July 24, from a run- away horse. He was in Toronto General hospital since the accident, suffering from skull fracture and face cuts.

The horse, drawing a milk wagon bolted from King and Mt. Hope Streets, clipping three cars, and running down Heimpel, before stopping. Surviving are his wife, the former Elma Hueuhn of Heidelberg: a son Oliver of Kitchener; a daughter, Mrs. Alex (Elsie) Fehrenbach, Kitchener, and one grand- daughter.

Mrs. Angus Heimpel

Mrs. Angush Heimpel of Heidelberg, the former Minerva Jacobi, died at St. Mary's Hospital Monday after a lengthy illness. She was 72.

A native of Wellesley Township. she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Jacobi. Her husband died Aug. 2, 1968.

Mrs. Heimpel was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Heidelberg.

She is survived by one son, Walter of RR 3, Wellesley; one daughter, Mrs. Helen Shippanowski of Waterloo; one brother, Harvey Jacobi of Heidelberg, and nine grandchildren.

Besides her husband and parents, she was also predeceased by one sister, Mrs. William (Alberta) Schneider.

The body will be at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home until 11 a.m. Wednesday when removal will be made to St. Peter's Church in Heidelberg where Rev. Arthur Horst will conduct a service at 3 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

BARKER - William E. Spafford, 76, of 1721 Pallister Ave., a wholesale florist here for 40 years died Saturday morning (July 7, 1962) at Lockport Memorial Hospital after suffering a heart attack at his home Friday.

Born in the Town of Hartland, he followed his father, James Spafford, in the greenhouse business. Mr. Spafford specialized in chrysanthemums.

He was a member of Somerset Lodge No. 639 F&AM and the Odd Fellows.

Surviving are his wife, Marie Steiss Spafford; two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Trinder of Barker and Mrs. Jean Perry of Brize Norton Air Force Base, England; one stepsister, Miss Aurelia Temple of Barker; four grandchildren.

Erle A. Steiss Dies Age 49

Erle Addison Steiss, manager of the investment department of the Canada Trust Company and Huron and Erie Mortgage Corporation, died suddenly yesterday in Toronto Western Hospital. Mr. Steiss, in his 50th year, suffered a brain hemorrhage in Toronto Saturday morning. He came to London in 1946, after five years overseas with the rank of major in the Canadian Army intelligence service in World War II.

Previously in his career he had been instructor of accounting at Harvard University at Boston from 1929 to 1931; was with Standard Statistics, New York City, 1931 to 1933; and was assistant to the president, Canadian General Investments, 1933 to 1941, when he entered the army. He came to London in July, 1946, as investment department manager with the old London and Western Trust organization, which the same year was amalgamated with the Huron and Erie Corporation and Canada Trust Company. He was a regular lecturer at the School of Business Administration, University of Western Ontario. The only child of J. Albert and Ada May Steiss, he was born at Heidelburg, [sic] near Kitchener, and was educated at Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate, the University of Toronto and Harvard University.

Mr. Steiss was a member of the Anglican Church of St. John the Evangelist; past director of Forest City Kiwanis Club; president of the London branch of the Institute of International Affairs; member of the London Club and Canadian Club, in London and the Albany Club, Eglinton Hunt Club and Royal Canadian Yacht Club, in Toronto; and in 1941 was vice-president of the Canadian Club in Toronto. Surviving besides his parents are his wife, the former Jean Schneider, whom he married in 1947, and two small daughters, Janet and Deborah. He lived at RR 6, London. The body is resting at the George E. Logan and Sons funeral home here until tomorrow. A service will be held at eight o'clock tomorrow night in the Church of St. John the Evangelist, and the funeral will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Dreisinger funeral home, Elmira, with burial in Heidelburg Cemetery. The Very Rev. Archdeacon C. W. Foreman, rector of the Church of St. John the Evangelist, will officiate at both services
