    PADDOCK, RICHARD

Suddenly, on Friday afternoon, the 27th June 1895, the youngest member of that representative family of Puslinch. On Thursday, while repairing a fence, Mr. Paddock received an ugly fall. Medical aid was immediately secured but he rapidly grew worse, a serious rupture showing itself, accompanied by complete unconsciousness, which indicated apoplexy and in this condition, he continued until his death. A strong healthy man all his life and a very hard worker, though past his 66th year by a few months, he possessed a physique which defied hard work and to those who saw him but a few days before his death, it seemed incredible that he would have been called so suddenly from amongst them. The youngest son of the late Thomas Paddock, who came from Yorkshire to Canada in 1833. Besides the parents, there were four sons, John, Thomas, George and Richard; two daughters, Maria (Mrs. Henry Bond) who died some years ago and Jane. Jane yielded up her young life through a most unfortunate runaway accident in Galt, while driving to church one Sunday morning. She received such injuries, that she died after some months of quiet and patient suffering. On first arriving, the family lived for a time on the side of Mill Creek, where William Rutherford now lives but quickly decided on Puslinch as their future home. Mr. Paddock took up 740 acres of land running through from the first allowance for road to the second and also fronting on the sideroad which divides the properties, the homestead of 270 acres lying on the east of the sideroad and the balance, now owned by John and Thomas Paddock, lying on the west. Hardwood and swamp, not a break in the wilderness except where the Mill Creek ran through the property, it seemed an almost hopeless task to think of reclaiming the land from the hand of nature. But life was simple in those days and needs few and first the little weather-board house was erected, then a log barn to shelter the oxen, on the hill almost over-looking the creek and then the older arms began to wield the axe and the giants went down and the sun shone through on the opened land and the promise of a happy home, of comfort and plenty gained. As the years passed, the parents departed, the father in January 1864 and the mother a few years later and forming new ties for themselves, the sons divided up the property, John taking the farm fronting on the 1st concession, George the one on the east of the side-road and also fronting on the same concession, Thomas that fronting on the second concession and sideroad to the west and Richard retained the homestead. Of the brothers, George, the eldest, died a number of years ago and since then, his family having moved away, Richard acquired his land, so that at his death, he held 270 of the original 740 acres, the balance being held by his brothers, John and Thomas. Mr. Paddock married a comparatively young man to Grace McPhatter, eldest daughter of M. McPhatter of Clyde and sister of Dr. McPhatter. They had a large family of seven sons and six daughters, all of whom are living, with the exception of Matthew, who died when a youth of fourteen. Two of the daughters are married to brothers, Messrs. McMillan, prosperous farmers residing in the neighbourhood. The rest of the family, with the exception of one daughter, who lives with an aunt, reside at home. The three eldest sons are stout young men, who scarcely know a day's idleness, winter or summer, having contributed much to the prosperity, which for years, has surrounded this family. The funeral took place on Sunday morning, services conducted by Rev. Robertson of Morriston at the family residence. Burial was at Killean Cemetery, where lie so many of those whose life's history is so inseparably connected with that township. Pallbearers: Matthew and James S. A. McPhatter, brothers-in law; William and John Paddock, nephews; Archie and Donald McMillan, sons-in-law.
