Death of Mr. Isaac Shupe.
The following regarding the death of Mr. Isaac Shupe was accidently omitted last week.
After an illness of several months, Mr. Isaac Shupe passed away on Sunday morning, May 23^rd, 1909, at his residence on Simcoe street, in his 74^th year. Deceased was born at Waterloo, Ont., and came to Newmarket 40 years ago. From the manufacturer's point of view he was regarded as one of the best selling agents in Canada. Not long after coming to Newmarket he married Miss Anne Thieresa Prest who with three daughters-Mrs. S. A. Proctor, Rossi and Pauline-and three sons-Frank, Claude and Robert, survive. In the early eighties Mr. Shupe, together with his brother-in-law, Mr. Robert D. Prest, went to Moose Jaw, Sask., and opened up the first hotel there known as "The Moose" but owing to the many difficulties in getting supplies into a new unsettled country, they only remained a short time, and after selling out returned to Newmarket. Mr. Shupe then moved with his wife and family to Brandon, Man., where he engaged in the hotel business again for four years and after the rebellion of 1885, settled in Parkdale, but not long afterwards gravitated to the old home-town, Newmarket, where he family have since resided while he continued the agency business all over Ontario and Quebec.
The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon and owing to the very low condition of Mrs. Shupe, was conducted privately by Rev. J. W. Blackler, rector of St. Paul's church. The pall-bearers were the three sons also Messrs. S. A. Proctor, H. V. Denne and C. Lloyd. Those from a distance were Dr. and Mrs. McQueen, Freelton; Mr. Charlie Lloyd, Stratford; Mrs. Thorpe, Philadelphia, Pa.; and the following from Toronto: --Mrs. Ferson, Mrs. E. Plaxton, Mrs. P. E. Durst, Miss Sykes, Mrs. E. Clark, Mr. Nash, Mr. E. A. McKenzie. Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Sleigh. The remains were interred in the Newmarket Cemetery.

Former Ayr Resident Passes

The death occurred in Wingham Hospital on T hursday of a former well known Ayr resident, William F. Clark, aged 90 years. He was, born here, and spent a good part of his life in the village. At. one time he operated a bakery here for six years, disposing of it to the late George H. Lawrence. He subsequently bought a small farm at Greenfield, which he worked for some years before taking up residence in Galt about a quarter of a century ago. Mr. Clark was a member of First United Church, Galt. He leaves to mourn his loss, a daughter, Mrs. Marion Gasches of Galt; a sister, Mrs. John Hodgson of Ayr, and a brother, Lawrence, in England. Two grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive. He was predeceased by two brothers and his wife, the former Jean Hodgson, in 1937. Funeral service was conducted on Saturday from the Coutts Funeral Home, Galt, with interment in the Ayr Cemetery. Rev. Fred Roberts officiated. Pallbearers were: R. Oscar Bell, Lloyd Howell, William Underwood, George Fowler, Jack Westbrook, and George Cardwell.

Mrs. John J. Hodgson Passes

Mrs. John J. Hodgson, one of Ayr's oldest residents, passed away in St. Mary's Hospital Kitchener, on Saturday, November 3rd. She was in her 98th year. Mrs. Hodgson, the former Agnes Ruth Clark, was a daughter of the late Charles Clark and Isabella Shupe. She was born and spent most of her life in Ayr and district. A life-long member of Knox United Church, Ayr, and life member of the former Women's Missionary Society. Predeceased by her first husband Oscar Bell, second husband John Hodgson and a son Lloyd. Surviving are two sons Oscar Bell of Blenheim, Ontario, and John W. Hodgson of Belleville; three daughters Mrs. Lloyd (Evelyn) Howell and Mrs. William (Isabelle) Underwood, both of Ayr, and Mrs. George (Mary) Fowler of Cambridge; also seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Private funeral service was held Monday at the Wm. Kipp Funeral Home, Paris. Interment in Ayr Cemetery.

Mrs. Lloyd Howell of Northumberland Street, Ayr, passed away at St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, on Sunday, February 3rd. She was in her 72nd year. Born in Ayr, she was the former Evelyn Ruth Hodgson, a daughter of the late John Hodgson and Agnes Clark. She was a member of Knox United Church, Ayr. Mr. and Mrs. Howell operated a farm north of the CPR tracks, east of Northumberland Street in Ayr for many years. Today much of their former farm is covered with homes and businesses. Mrs. Howell had worked in the office at Best Foods and later at Sherk Sales and Service before retiring. Beloved wife of Lloyd Howell, dear mother of Ross and his wife Dianne of Guelph and Bill and his wife Sandy of Kitchener; loving grandmother of Bradley, Edward, Laura, Cathy and Rick; dear sister of Oscar Bell of Blenheim, Jack Hodgson of Belleville and Mrs. William (Isabel) Underwood of Ayr. Predeceased by a sister Mary Fowler. Rested at the Wm. Kipp Funeral Home, Paris, where funeral service will be held today (Wed.) at 1: 30 p.m. Rev. George Saunders of Ayr will officiate. The sad death occurred in Ayr, on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 8.30 a.m., of William Lloyd Bell, eldest son of Mrs. J. J. Hodgson, aged four years and five months. The little fellow, while playing on Monday morning, accidently fell backward into a pail of boiling water, the scalds from which resulted in his death. Much sympathy is extended by the community to the bereaved ones in their sad loss. The funeral will take place on Saturday at 2.30 p.m., to Ayr cemetery.

Oscar Bell

A former Ayr resident, R. Oscar Bell of Blenheim passed away April 29th in Chatham. He was 79. Born in Cranston, he was a son of the late Richard Oscar Bell and Agnes Ruth Clark He spent his early years in Ayr, apprenticing at Ayr Garage under Jack Gillies. Mr. Bell was a member of Blenheim United Church and A.O.T.S. and also a member of the choir for 20 years, member of the Chatham barbershop singers and Ken Kordsmen. He was a stockman at Rigby Motors for 18 years, then worked for J. M. Carruthers Motors until retirement. He then developed a woodworking craft hobby. Predeceased by two sisters, Evelyn Howell and Mary Fowler. Survived are his wife, the former Lillian Robertson; one daughter Judy and son-in-law Frank O'Rourke of Raleigh Township; one brother J. W. Hodgson of Belleville, one sister Isabell (Mrs. William Underwood) of Ayr. Funeral service was held in Blenheim, with interment in Evergreen Cemetery, Blenheim.
