    Death Of John Cochrane

Lifelong Resident of This Community Passed on Tuesday in His 80th Year
    Was Enthusiastic Curler

It was with deep regret that the people of the community learned on Tuesday of the passing of John Cochrane, one of Ayr's most highly esteemed residents, in his 80th year. Mr. Cochrane was taken seriously ill about two weeks ago and but little hope was subsequently held out for his .recovery. He was born in Greenfield, being the third son of Samuel Cochrane, who came to Canada in pioneer days and was an employee of the Goldie Milling Company for many years. The family later lived on the farm now owned by Mrs. Robert Cochrane, just south of the village. The toll road between Ayr and Paris was owned and operated, for many years by John Cochrane, who subsequently disposed of it to J. S. Clark. Mr. Cochrane was afterwards in the employ of the bridge and building department of the Canadian Pacific Railway and worked in the company's gravel pit here for many summers. He was one of Ayr's most enthusiastic curlers, being a member of the local club for over half a century, and for many years was a member of the Tankard rink. Being of a public-spirited disposition, he served on the Ayr Council for several years and was a member of the local Cemetery Board for 24 years. Mr. Cochrane was an adherent of Knox United Church, which he attended regularly. He was one of the last of a generation of outstanding residents of this community who were noted for their fine qualities of citizenship. To them goes much of the credit for the reputation which Ayr has always enjoyed as being a sturdy and progressive village. Besides one sister, Margaret, and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Robert Cochrane, he is survived by three nephews and two nieces, as follows: Ernest Cochrane, Blenheim; Marshall and Robert Cochrane, Ayr; Thomas Ritchie and Mrs. Charles Gunn, South Dumfries. The funeral will take place on Thursday afternoon to Ayr Cemetery, with a private service at his late residence at 1.30 p.m., followed by a public service in Knox United Church at 2.00 p.m.
