Miller, whose mother was a cousin of Robert Burns. She was born January 28, 1809, and died in September, 1877. John Dickie, Jr., left his native land soon after his marriage and made his home in Canada, where he reared a family of six children, named respectively, John, James, David, William B., Marian and Jessie. In 1854 he came to this State and bought a farm of two hundred and forty acres in West Bloomfield Township, this county. It was his intention to bring his family hither the next spring, but he died in February, 1855, before his purpose was accomplished. His widow and five children soon located on the farm, which is now owned by David, the third son.

Of late years she had been in rather delicate health, but it was not until some three weeks ago ,that she was taken seriously ill with dysentery and heart complications. The late Marion Dickie, was the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Dickie and was born in Ayrshire, Scotland. At the age of ten years, she came to Canada with her parents, settling in what is now known as the Dickie Settlement. There Mr. and Mrs. Dickie, away back in the thirties, began the work of clearing the land and carving out a home for themselves, in the township. There the subject of this sketch lived until some fifty years ago, when she was married to the late Alexander Cranston, then a farmer on the Cedar Creek road. Mr. and Mrs. Cranston, resided on their farm, about five miles from Galt, until some twenty-two years ago, when they removed to Galt. About nine years since. the husband and father passed away, leaving a widow and six children, one daughter; Jessie, having passed away on July 26th, 1880. Between the death of the father and the mother, another child, Alexander, died, his death occurring a little over a year ago. Five children are left to mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate mother, who was held in high esteem by a very wide circle of friends. The sons are; Robert D. of San Francisco, Cal., John D. and James K., of Galt. The daughters are; Mrs. H. Dickerson and Mrs. D. H. McLean, both of Toronto. The deceased lady also it leaves two brothers. Jas. Dickle in New Zealand and Alexander in Lapierre, Michigan. The late Mrs. Cranston was an old and faithful member of Knox church and in former years was an active and energetic worker in the Woman's Missonary Society. The news of her death will be received with sincere sorrow, especially by the older members of the congregation. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, at 3.30 o'clock, from deceased's late residence, Shade street, to Mount View Cemetery.

    Notes:

    WILLIAM B. DICKIE is one of the reputable farmers of White Lake Township, owning and occupying a well-regulated tract of land on section 29. He started out in life as a general farmer with $2,800, and has displayed such qualifications for his work and such good judgment in investments, that he now has three hundred and sixty acres of good farm land and a house and lot in Flint. His farm is under cultivation, except forty-seven acres which are devoted to timber, and a full line of farm buildings and such adornments as befits a country home may be seen upon it.

    The grandfather of our subject was John Dickie, a native of Ayrshire, Scotland, who emigrated to Canada and spent the rest of his life in County Waterloo. His wife was Marian Cuthbertson, and his family consisted of four sons and three daughters. His first-born was John, Jr., who opened his eyes to the light in Scotland July 17, 1830, and who grew to manhood in his native land. He was married there to Janet B.

    The gentleman whose name introduces these paragraphs was born March 6, 1841, in County Waterloo, Canada, and was fourteen years old when he came to this county with his mother and other members of the family. He remained at the family home until his marriage, after which he set up his own household on an eighty-acre tract he had bought. He retained that property two years, then changed his location to White Lake Township, buying one hundred and twenty acres, near which he now lives. He next bought the one hundred and twenty acres on which his present residence stands, and still later added another one hundred and twenty. His accumulation of property shows that he has been industrious and thrifty, and that he merits a high position among his fellow agriculturists. July 4, 1865, our subject was married to Miss Hattie Malcolm, daughter of George and Janette (Andrews) Malcolm. Her father was born at Letbam, Fifeshire, Scotland, and came to America in 1827, located in New York City. There he worked at his trade that of a carpenter. He was married February 10, 1828, to a daughter of Simon Andrews, who was born near Glasgow, Scotland. The children of Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm were named James, Mary, George, John, Annie, Robert, Elizabeth, Hattie and Willie. She who became Mrs. Dickie is well informed, thoroughly acquainted with household duties and has an estimable character. Mr. and Mrs. Dickie have had ten children, viz.: Charlie, Fred, Roy, Kittie, Harrison, Jenny B., Annie, Malcolm, Willie and May. Of these children Charlie is deceased, and Jennie B., Annie and Malcolm are still living under the home roof; Willie is married and farming near New Hudson; May is the wife of George Wager and her home is in White Lake Township. Mr. Dickie is a Royal Arch Mason, belonging to Milford Lodge No. 1 and Blue Lodge No. 121, in Commerce. He is and always has been a Republican. He served three consecutive years as Township Supervisor and discharged the duties of office in a manner creditable to himself and his constituents. Mrs. Dickie is a member in good standing of the Baptist Church.

    Notes:

    Mr. John Galt Dickie.

    The death occurred on Friday, June 23, of Mr. John Galt Dickie, the oldest settler in the Waverley district and a veteran of the Maori War, after a long illness borne with great patience.

    The late Mr. Dickie was born in the Dickie Settlement, Galt, Ontario, Canada, on April 8, 1838, and was the eldest son of a family of seven. He was the first of the family to migrate. He first went to England and in 1863 he sailed for New Zealand from Liverpool in the sailing ship 'Wild Duck' reaching Auckland late in that year. For some time he managed a farm for the late Mr. Alfred Buckland at Three Kings, Onehunga, but he was enticed by the glamour of the gold rush, and went to the diggings on the West Coast.

    Fortune did not smile upon him, so a return was made to Wellington. With others, a walk was commenced over Paekakariki along the coast line, and eventually the deceased settled in Turakina. In 1868 the deceased came to Waverley, settling near Moamahaki, where he carried on farming pursuits.

    Later on he was joined by the other members of his family with their parents, and also members of the family of an uncle, and these took up land adjoining.

    On the outbreak of the Maori War in 1868 the respective homes of the Dickie family were burnt and the settlers had to retreat into Waverley, then known as Wairoa. The deceased and his brother Alex, joined up with the Wairoa Rifle Volunteers, which erected the Wairoa Redoubt, upon which is now built the Waverley War Memorial.

    Mr. Alex. Dickie is the sole survivor today of the volunteer company. During the unsettled period after the war the deceased went to Hawera, where in partnership with the late Mr. John Stevenson, of Manaia, and Mr. Tom Twigg (afterwards engineer to the Hawera Borough Council), a contract was obtained for constructing the main south road from Hawera to the Tongahoe.
    The deceased returned to Waverley in 1872, when he married Miss Mary Hone, who predeceased him in 1918. He acquired a large block of land in Moumahaki, but he was forced to relinquish the greater part of it during the period known as "the hungry eighties." He then took up land at Kohi, near Waverley, and farmed there until he retired from active farming in 1909. Since then he has lived at 'Awatea' Waverley, first with his two sons, Messrs. Charles and Harold Dickie, and afterwards with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Wallace.

    The deceased is survived by three sons, Messrs. Charles Dickie and Harold Dickie, M.P., of Hawera, and Mr Clifford Dickie, of Waverley, and two daughters, Mrs. A. G. Wallace and Mrs. G. H. Graham, both of Waverley, and by eight grandchildren. He is survived, too, by a sister, Mrs. McL'Dowie, formerly of Hawera, but now residing in Auckland, and a brother, Mr. Alex. Dickie, at present residing in Wanganui. Mr. Dickie was of a retiring disposition, but he was always most interesting in his tales of his experiences during the early and strenuous days when the pioneering spirit was so prevalent. He was very proud of the fact that his name is on the books of the local branch of the Bank of Australasia, as its first customer in Waverley.

    THE FUNERAL.

    The funeral of the deceased took place on Sunday afternoon at the local cemetery, a large number attending to pay their last tribute of respect to the memory of the deceased. The services were conducted at the church and graveside by the Rev. S. Gardiner, and Mrs. Eames presided at the organ. The pall-bearers were messrs. A. E. Symes, W. McL'Dowie, S. Hone, W. Muir, J. Newland and P. Bremer. A large number of wreaths were sent from friends. The coffin was covered with the Union Jack, the late Mr. Dickie being a veteran of the Maori War.

    Notes:

    DICKIE, BYRON H.

    The Breckenridge Democrat of Breckonridge, TX contains the following account of the death of Mr. Dickie of Woodson, TX, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Dickie, formerly of Puslinch, near Hespeler: A former Breckenridge school boy and graduate electrical engineer, he was accidentally electrocuted in the General Electric Co. plant at Schenectady, NY, on Monday morning, February 5, 1917, at about 10. His body was laid to rest at Woodson on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 10, with masonic honours. The Breckenridge Lodge officiated and about thirty automobile loads of friends and masons from Breckenridge attended. It seems that something had gone wrong with the dynamo and that he had gone around the machine to splice a wire carrying 2, 200 volts of electricity, which had been burned in two. The switch, which should have been opened before touching the wire, was closed, the supposition being that he had looked at the switch in passing, thought it open and had gone about his work. When he was found about five minutes later, he was standing upright, one hand on the wire and when the switch was thrown open, he crumpled to the floor. The company physician worked for three hours, using a pulmotor but to no avail. Funeral services, held at Woodson Church, were conducted by Rev. Boyd of the Methodist Church. The concourse of friends was so great that the building could not accommodate more than one third of them. He was the second oldest son and a young man of sterling worth, marked ability and was anxious to make his mark in the world. He was 25 years of age, a graduate of Breckenridge High School and the A. & M. College of Texas. In private life, he was of a jovial, open-hearted disposition, despising hypocrisy in every form, a loving and dutiful son, honouring his mother, as a son should and being more than a son, a chum, to his father. Also survived by three brothers, Hugh, Alex Jr. and Dewey; two sisters, Myrtle and Katie.

    The Books you get from J.K. Cranston,
    Are good enough for any mansion;
    If once you buy at this cheap store,
    You'll soon be back to get some more.

    It is the place to get the Toys,
    That will just suit the little boys;
    And blue-eyed Dolls with lovely curls,
    That will delight the little girls.

    There's Toys and buggies for the babies,
    And fancy things to please the ladies,
    Such as Albums, Vases and Dressing Cases,
    In which they can see their pretty faces.

    Young gents', it is the place to buy,
    Things to please our girls, O my!
    The ladies can get a game of crouet,
    And a nice fine book with which to crochet.

    Papa and mama when you go shopping,
    Just stop and buy for the Christmas stocking,
    Balls, Marbles, and Horns, Mouth Organs and Whistles,
    Work Boxes and Puzzles and little dishes.

    There's such nice Bibles for dear grandpa.
    And Sacred Hymns for our grandma;
    The Bible is the only book that God has given,
    To guide us on our way to heaven.

    Come ere and buy, come one, come all,
    There's something nice for great and small;
    The things they sell are very cheap,
    Which when you get you'll have a treat.
