It becomes our sad duty to-day to chronicle the death of the oldest person in the neighborhood, Mrs. David Lichty (nee Rebecca Gingrich), who died last Thursday at the home of her son David near here, after an illness extending to some 14 months, at the ripe old age of 88 years, 1 month and 12 days. She was the mother of 5 sons and 1 daughter, name;--Menno, George, Daniel, John, David, and Nancy, of whom only George and David survive. Her husband also predeceased her about 23 years. The funeral took place on Sunday forenoon at Martin's Meeting House. We extend sympathy to the bereaved ones.

Daniel Lichty

It is our painful duty to chronicle the early demise of one of the most industrious and progressive men in Woolwich Township in the person of Mr. Daniel Lichty. His illness was of short duration lasting about a week. Acute pneumonia combined with sever affliction of the brain was the cause of death on the morning of the 21st inst., at his comfortable home about two miles west of our village. All that medical skill could do was done to alleviate his sufferings by Drs. Arnott, Berlin, and Ullyott, Elmira, who met daily in consultation. Deceased was of a peaceful, retiring disposition, and was much respected by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He leaves behind a sorrowing wife and three children besides a large circle of well-to-do relatives. His remains were followed to the Martin burying ground by a large concourse of sorrowing neighbors. His removal has cast a gloom over the entire community - Conestoga Correspondent

MR. SOLOMON M. LICHTY

Mr. Solomon Lichty, 79, died Tuesday afternoon, July 8, at the Elmira Private Hospital after a lengthy ilness [sic].

Born in Woolwich township on November 9, 1878, he was the son of the late Menno Lichty and Catharine Martin. He was a member of the St. Jacobs Mennonite Church.

He is survived by six daughters: Mrs. John (Lucinda) Snider, Wallenstein, RR 1; Mrs. Norman (Susannah) Knarr, Elmira; Mrs. Isaiah (Ermina) Martin, Drayton, RR 2; Mrs. Ezra (Mary Ann) Martin, Elmira, RR 1; Mrs. Abraham (Rebecca) Martin, Elmira, RR 1; Mrs. Noah (Hannah) Sauder, St. Jacobs; two sons Leander of Winterbourne, Orvie of Elmira; three sisters, Mrs. Aaron (Malinda) Gingrich of West Montrose; Mrs. John (Anne) Bowman of Wallenstein; Mrs. Peter (Rachel) Martin, St. Jacobs, RR 1; four brothers, John of Floradale, Amos of Floradale, Menno of Windsor, David of Kitchener. His wife Mary Ann Martin predeceased him in 1948. One son predeceased him in 1953, two children died in infancy. He is also survived by 30 grand-children and one great grand-child.

The body is resting at Dreisinger funeral parlor until Fri-day noon when removal will be made to the St. Jacobs Mennonite church for funeral service at 2:00 p.m. DST. Service to be conducted by Rev. Howard Bauman. Burial will be in the Elmira Mennonite cemetery.

Lichty. Oliver Lichty was born near Conestoga, Ont., Aug. 30, 1888; died Sept. 17, 1933; aged 45 y. 17 d. At the age of 16 he chose Christ as his personal Savior and united with the Mennonite Church. In March, 1909, he married Luella Eby and to this union was born 1 son. The mother was called home in July, 1911. Nov., 1912, he married Joanna Eby. She with the following children (Cranson, Arthur, Helen, Norma, Bernice, Glennis, and Mervin) feel deeply the loss of the one who has left them so suddenly. Besides these his parents, 7 sisters and 2 brothers remain. Two sisters already preceded him. The news of the sudden passing of Bro. Lichty was a great shock to this community, as he was known by all to be in perfect health. His death was occasioned by a fall from a silo. As he was alone at the time the detailed facts are not known, but it is believed that death was almost instantaneous. The early years of his married life were lived near Floradale, Ont. About fifteen years ago they moved to Mannheim, Ont., and several years later to Nine Pines, where he met his sad death. Ever since moving to this community he has been a member of the Latschar Mennonite Church, where all his family, who are of accountable age, are also members. He always took an active part in the work of the Church when called upon. He will be missed by all who knew him, but especially by the family and his beloved wife who looked to him as the mainstay of the home. Funeral service at the home was private, conducted by Bro. J. W. Witmer. A service was also held at First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, with Brethren Oliver D. Snider and M. S. Hallman in charge. Texts, Rev. 21: 4; Amos 3: 6. Interment was made in the Waterloo Mennonite Cemetery. The family express their resigned attitude and love in the verse:

"Had He asked us, well He'd know,
We would say, Oh! Spare the blow.
Yes with streaming tears we'd say,
Lord we loved him, let him stay."

Bauman.--Angeline Lichty was born June 29, 1884; died March 29, 1927; aged 42 y. 9 m. She was married to Onias Bauman. Their only child died in infancy. She accepted Christ as her Savior early in life and united with the Mennonite Church. She lived a quiet, peaceable, and exemplary Christian life and will be missed in the church as well as in the home and community in which she lived. She suffered much from gall stones and underwent an operation for same. This at first seemed a success, but later complications proved fatal. Funeral, April 1, conducted by Oliver Snider and Moses M. Brubacher at Mennonite Church, St. Jacobs, Ont.

Funeral service took place Thursday at St. Jacobs Mennonite church for Mrs. Albert Heer of St. Jacobs. She died at her home last Monday at the age of 66.

Rev. Glenn Brubacher officiated. Burial was in the St. Jacobs Mennonite cemetery.

The former Elmina Lichty. she was born in Woolwich township, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Lichty.

Surviving besides her husband are two sons, Willis and Curtis Martin: three daughters, Mrs. Willis (Vera) Weber, Mrs. Floyd (Lorna) Shantz and Mrs. Mabel Shyder; two step-daughters, Mrs. Emanuel (Mary) Metzger and Mrs. Ronald (Reta) Garner; one brother, David Lichty of Waterloo and 29 grand- children. She was predeceased by her first husband, Elam Martin, one son, four brothers and a sister.

On a weekly basis, I have been Zoom chatting with my grandmother. Along with any family members who could join in the call, I have been asking her questions about her life.

In the spirit of Valentine's Day this week, I asked her about the dating years with my grandfather, Noah. In short, it was over a 4 year period and he would visit her at her parents farm or whatever home she was at as a "househand" earning money. (She is Mennonite) They got married when his stepmom was getting married herself and Noah needed a woman to care for him. My grandmother moved into her empty in-laws home after the wedding. She told us her summer honeymoon was spend in the pea patch that was planted by her step-mother-in-law during the spring.

Surviving, besides her husband and her mother, are two sons, Lorne of RR1, Waterloo, and Tilman of RR 1, St. Jacobs; three daughters, Mrs. Harry (Minerva) B. Martin and Mra. Orton (Elvina) Gingrich, both of Elmira, and Elleen, RR 1, R. Jacobs; three sisters, Mrs. Amos Brubacher and Mrs. Carl Ziegler, both of Hawkesville, and Mrs. Free- man Martin of RR 4, Elmira: and five grandchildren.

The body rested at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor, Elraira, until Tuesday noon, then at the St. Jacobs Mennonite Church for the funeral at 2:30 p.m. Rev. Glenn Brubacher officiated and burial followed in St. Jacobs Mennonite Cemetery.

Obituary of Wilbur Alexander Lichty

Peacefully passed away on Sunday, July 18, 2021 at John Noble Home, Brantford, at the age of 95.

Wil was born on September 21, 1925 and was the beloved husband and best friend of Verlin Irene (Cope) Lichty. They were married September 6, 1950, and lived near or in Elmira until September 2018, when they moved to Waterloo.

Loving and wonderful father to Lisa Anne Lichty Klaehn. Proud Gramp to Donald Scott Klaehn, his wife Loralie and their twin daughters Evie Marie and Madison Esme; Nathan Thomas Klaehn, his wife Samantha Cavanagh and their daughter Amelia (Millie) Jayne Cavanagh; and granddaughter Alissa Leigh Klaehn.

Wil joined the Royal Canadian Engineers at the age of 16. He was a dispatch rider during WWII riding a Harley in England and a 'Snortin' Norton' in Europe. He was wounded in Elbeuf, France near Boulogne, and spent a year in Purley, England for rehabilitation, exploring small English towns with train trips on leaves, making friends everywhere.

Wil was the co-owner of Elmira Insurance Agency Limited, having joined with Fred C. Forwell in 1948, and sold Elmira Insurance Brokers in 2012. He took on leadership positions in the Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees), locally, provincially, and nationally. Wil was involved with the Court of Revision - Waterloo County, was President of Waterloo Insurance Brokers, and Director of Ontario Insurance Brokers. He was a member of the Elmira Town Council for two years, and treasurer of the Elmira Fairboard Association for 22 years (later Elmira Raceway). He was active in the Lions Club and Masonic Lodge, and a member of the Drumbo hunt club.

He enjoyed many fishing trips, and travelled the world with Verlin, returning to England several times. He took pride in their home in the country, always busy to keep it in top shape. He loved riding his motorcycle and trail rides on his snowmobile - and had endless patience to dig young snowmobile riders out of drifts when they got stuck, and to shovel the pond for skating. He was a gracious host, had a quick wit and enjoyment of wordplay, an avid reader, taught Lisa and the grandkids to play cribbage (and sometimes they would win). He enjoyed theatre and the KW Symphony, movies, and playing bridge with friends.

He is survived by his sisters-in-law Donna June Cope Lindsay and Emma Buehler Cope Dundon. Also survived by Emma's children, Warren Cope, his wife Stacy and their children Melina, Colin, Shelby and Hayley; Stewart Douglas Cope and his wife Brenda and their children Melissa (Cody McDonald) and Clifton Andrew; Donna Louise Cope Herteis and Jeff Herteis and their children Valerie, Rachel and Steven.

Predeceased by parents Harvey Lichty (1927) and Salome Roth Lichty (1971) and by his sisters Beatrice (1938), and Edith Turnball (Matthew) (2011); and brothers-in-law Clifton Reginald Cope (1983) and Rowland Angus Lindsay (1996).

At Wil's request, cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations to Doctors Without Borders or Mennonite Central Committee would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy, and can be made through the Dreisinger Funeral Home, Elmira.

In her early years she enjoyed her garden and flower beds. She was an excellent cook and baker and everyone enjoyed the fresh coffee cake she made. She enjoyed her retirement years traveling, boating and fishing with Abner.

Alma Man, 43 Fatally Injured In 2-Car Crash

Vernon Martin, 43, of Alma, died Dec. 31 in K-W Hospital of injuries received in a two-car crash near Elora the day before. Mr. Martin's car was in collision with another vehicle driven by Harold Drimmie of Elora. Mr. Martin was taken first to hospital in Fergus. He was later transferred to the K-W Hospital where he died following an operation. He was the son of Mrs. Elam Martin and the late Mr. Martin, RR 1, Waterloo. He was born in Woolwich Township and was a member of Floradale Mennonite Church. Surviving are his wife, the former Eileen Gingrich; four sons, Kenneth 11, Frederick 9, Brian 8, and Rodney 4, and one daughter, Kristine 12; two brothers, Curtis of St. Jacobs and Willis of Kitchener; three sisters, Mrs. Willis (Vera) weber of Guernsey, Sask., Mrs. Floyd (Lorna) Shantz of Seaforth and Mrs. Mabel Snyder, RR 1, Waterloo. The body was at the Dreisinger Funeral parlor in Elmira until Wednesday noon, when removal was made to Floradale Mennonite Church. Community mourns death of Elmira funeral director David Dreisinger

Friends of David Dreisinger described him as a well-respected and caring individual who would help anyone. Dreisinger, 76, died Tuesday, Nov. 9 at K-W Hospital. He was born in Elmira on Nov. 7, 1917. He was a third-generation funeral director, who, according to close friends, learned the business from his grandfather, Chris Dreisinger. David Dreisinger obtained his funeral director's licence in 1938. He was a former member of Elmira town council from 1956 to 1959. Elmira town council was in existence prior to the region taking over in 1973 and forming the current Woolwich township. At the time Dreisinger was on council, each term was for one year. Dreisinger served with the Royal Canadian Air Force during the second world-war. He was a member of the Elmira Kiwanis club, the Elmira Legion, and of the Masonic lodge. During the remembrance-day dinner at the Legion on Thursday, there was a moment of silence in memory of Dreisinger. Eddie Bearinger, of Elmira described his friend since childhood, as "very sincere. He was very meticulous. If he said 'I will meet you at a certain time,' he meant it. David would help out many people. He was always there to lend a helping hand, but he did not want people to know about it. He was a man behind the scenes. He was very well respected especially by the Old Order Mennonites. David knew their customs. He knew how to conduct a funeral," Bearinger said. Ernie Kendall of Elmira, taught Dreisinger. "He was one of those students who always asked questions, as any student should. In later years, he was a neighbour. David and his wife were great friends of ours." Kendall said that the Dreisinger family has done "a great job" when it comes to funerals as there has been no competition. "The Dreisinger name is very well known and respected," he said. Kendall continued that his long-time friend was "very proud of Elmira. David thought a great deal about the town." Kendall and Bearinger said that Dreisinger was a supporter of local events. "If there was a special need, or a gift was needed, David would give, but asked that his name not be used." Another long-time friend, Bette Musselman, of Elmira, also described him as "a true friend. He was always there when I really needed him. I'll always remember what he did for me when Art died." He was the husband of Eileen Thorpe; father of John and his wife, Susan, of Elmira; Colleen and her husband, Frank Zanetti, of Battle Creek, Michigan; brother of Hazel (Mrs. Donald Brown), of Elmira; also survived by five grandchildren. Burial was in Elmira Union cemetery. Donations to Gale Presbyterian church or St. James Lutheran church, both of Elmira, would be appreciated.
