    John Bell Dalzell was born in Lochead, Dumfries, Scotland s/o Robert Dalzell & Margaret Bell. Came to Galt in 1866. Attended Galt Collegiate Insititute and Normal School in Toronto. Taught school starting at age 17 in Stratford and Bloomingdale. He joined the law firm of W. H. Bowlby and E. P. Clement in Kitchener, then opened his own practice in Galt in 1886. Moved to Paris and then returned to Galt in 1899 and partnered with Robert Barrie then with Hector A. Stewart forming the partnership Dalzell and Stewart.

    He served as Galt's solicitor from 1906 to 1943 and served Ayr and North Dumfries in the same manner. He was named "King's Council" in 1935.
